As of this writing, there are nine movies in the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" series, and sussing out their chronology is one of the more herculean tasks a horror fan may find themselves undertaking. Like the "Halloween" movies, the "Texas Chainsaw" flicks abide by a choose-your-own-adventure structure, with some movies following a definite timeline, and others merrily ignoring previous chapters. Confoundingly, several of them have almost identical titles. The only consistent element of "Texas Chainsaw" is that they are all horrifically violent and unbearably disturbing. But, y'know, in a good way.
The premise of the "Texas Chainsaw" movies is simple. Thanks to rampant American poverty, entire families have been forced to live off the grid in remote, rural parts of the country. One of these families, largely inbred and blissfully detached from conventional morality, has taken to kidnapping passersby, stripping them for meat, and using their skin and bones as construction materials.

Despite the decline in theatrical horror releases during the 1990s, the direct-to-video side of the genre was still thriving. So much so that something like Jeff Burr’s Night of the Scarecrow understandably slipped through the cracks after its unnoticed home-video premiere in ‘96. Even aficionados of this regularly dismissed decade of horror might not be aware of the movie’s existence. Nevertheless, longtime fans still consider this to be one of the more notable offerings of scarecrow horror.
It’s not hard to figure out why Night of the Scarecrow got so lost in the shuffle of ‘90s Dtv horror. Jeff Burr claimed only around 12,000 units were shipped back in the bygone days of video shops. Yet, if you came across this movie’s alluring box art in the horror aisle, you couldn’t be blamed for wanting to take a closer look. The alternative artwork — the titular, sickle-wielding villain...

The horror landscape is filled to the brim with icons and mascots that were successful and failures. Looking down the aisle at the literal murderer’s row of horror movie villains, you can’t shake a stick without hitting some one-off baddies that were clearly meant for multi-movie stardom but due to box office or critical hate were relegated to one movie. August 22nd marked the 37th anniversary of the release director Tobe Hooper‘s sequel to his 1974 classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. A sequel appropriately titled The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (get it Here). Many fans celebrated the film with star Bill Moseley on social media – and the occasion inspired Moseley to reminisce about the moment when he ad-libbed one of the most popular lines in the film: “Lick my plate, you dog dick!”
In The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Moseley played the maniacal goofball Chop Top, who is revealed to have had a metal plate placed in his head after he received a head wound during the Vietnam War. He wrote on Facebook, “Damn, a whole lotta love for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 yesterday on the occasion of its 37th birthday! Love the movie, love the memories, love Chop Top! I’m a huge fan of the slasher genre. Out of every sub category in the wide horror genre, the slasher appeals to me the most. There’s just something thrilling about watching characters attempt to survive a monster in a mask that wants to butcher them to bits. Despite it being one of the most successful subgenres of film, it hasn’t really cracked the video game space all that much. Sure we’ve had gems like Friday the 13th, and some inversions of the genre like Until Dawn. But for the most part, if you want to live out the fantasy of being in a slasher film, the pickings are slim.
In comes Killer Frequency to change all of that; and it’s an absolute blast. If I had to pin it down, it feels like playing a video game version of the opening of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2...

It’s time for a new episode of the Awfully Good Horror Movies video series, and in this one we’re looking back at a personal favorite of mine. A movie that I feel fits the description of “awfully good” perfectly. That movie is the 1987 release Slumber Party Massacre II (watch it Here), and you can hear all about it by checking out the video embedded above!
Written and directed by Deborah Brock, Slumber Party Massacre II has the following synopsis: The only sane survivor of Slumber Party Massacre, Courtney dreams of the drill murderer returning. She can’t shake the horrible feeling that she and her friends will be viciously tormented and brutally butchered. Again and again the nightmare returns. Dazed, Courtney loses control. And her nightmare crosses into reality. No one believes her, until it’s too late. The driller killer returns, reincarnated as an evil rocker. He...

Any horror fan knows Leatherface, and the “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” movies are some of the most iconic in the genre.

The 1982 summer smash showed that scary movies had a place in a suburban setting and in the multiplex for a family audience
In the summer of 1982, Steven Spielberg released two movies in consecutive weeks, Poltergeist and Et the Extra Terrestrial, that now seem like mirror images of each other. Both are about suburban enclaves visited by supernatural phenomena – one a haunting, the other a close encounter of the third kind – and both are ultimately storybook affirmations of the American family, which is made stronger through crisis. The California suburbs were a playground for Spielberg, who grew up in them, and these films were like new subdivisions in his personal colonization of Hollywood.
The nature of Spielberg’s involvement in Poltergeist has been in hot dispute from the beginning. He’s credited as the co-producer and co-writer on the film, which is based on his original story, but the director is the late Tobe Hooper,...

Summer is about to finally, blessedly be in full swing. And to honor the occasion, Hulu is showing up big with its list of new releases for June 2022.
Hulu is bringing two major TV titles to its stream this month. The first is The Orville: New Horizons on June 2. Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi/comedy started as a simple Star Trek parody on Fox before blossoming into its own entirely sincere space adventuring beast. Now “New Horizons” promises to be a fresh start for the series on Hulu. Next up is Only Murders in the Building season 2 on June 28. Season 1 of this Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez-starring series was a big hit. Let’s see if our favorite podcasters can pull it off once again.

It's clear from the film's opening that David Blue Garcia's "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is situated within the universe of Tobe Hooper's 1974 original, "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre." Colin Stetson's rumbling score kicks in with humming horns, almost like an old machine coming to life again before grainy old footage fires up on a tv, and John Larroquette reprises his role as narrator from the intro of Hooper's film, detailing the "grisly and gruesome" attacks on a group of youths in August of 1973.

There is just something so satisfying about an atmospheric thriller that lives up to the hype.
Often, trailers for stories with bloodied creatures and jump scares end up giving away all the goods in said trailer. Leaving the audience vaguely satisfied, as the nail-biting horror experience they were expecting falls well short of expectations.
From Season 1 Episode 1 is not that experience. From is chilling from the opening frame to the close. It's a moody, slow mystery that pulls you into its orbit and never lets you go. This is the horror series you've been missing from your life.
The From pilot is fabulous.
It has everything you want in a pilot and doesn't bog things down with long-running commentary to set up all the players and the season-long narrative. Instead, it drops you into the action relatively quickly and then slowly fills in some things along the way.

In 1974, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” emerged as one of the most influential slasher movies of all time, and Leatherface entered the pantheon of horror villain greats. After the whopping success of Tobe Hooper’s original, seven films have continued its legacy of haunted houses, cannibal families, and yes, lots of chainsaws.

What is it about the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise that leaves Hollywood revival after revival in such a bloody state? Tobe Hooper’s original Texas Chain Saw Massacre is certainly not a flawless movie. It doesn’t even spell “chainsaw” correctly! But what that motley crew of young, independent filmmakers achieved while fumbling around in the grueling summer sun of 1973 has been impossible to replicate. Numerous studios and desperate IP holders proved that when, every few years, they let the movie rights change hands and someone else sends more aspiring filmmakers down to Texas with a bigger budget… all but dooming them to return with another wretched mess that pales by comparison.
Now, it’s Netflix’s turn.
As the third rebooted “direct sequel” to the original 1974 classic inside of a decade, Netflix’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre ignores all the previous continuations and remakes in favor of offering the true follow-up to the Hooper film.

Nobody likes landlords these days, but we can agree that most don’t deserve to die by chainsaw. In the snippy and totally serviceable ninth sequel to the horror classic, Netflix takes a stab at “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” reviving the lumbering Leatherface from his cannibalistic slumber. The quintessential slasher villain is somewhat humanized in the latest chapter, which positions the mute giant as a mourning son avenging his adopted mother’s death. That would make the plucky young gentrifiers who kicked her out of her house the bad guys, if only they weren’t systematically severed limb from limb.
Aside from a mild commentary of mass shootings and late stage capitalism (the term even gets a shout-out), the story of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” hangs loosely around dopey characters and unsurprising plot developments. Still, it
The movie opens with a group of friends driving across the wide open plains of deep Texas.

“Texas Chainsaw Massacre” — not to be confused with “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” (1972) or “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (2003) — is the ninth film in the nearly 50-year-old “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” series. It’s also at least the fourth “Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2,” and at least the third “Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2” that ignores all the other sequels.
Canon? What’s canon? Canon got shot out of a cannon, and into some chain saws. Or, as this franchise sometimes likes to spell them, “chainsaws.”
All you need to know going into David Blue Garcia’s latest installment is that way back in the 1970s, a group of young travelers took a pitstop at the Sawyer family residence, and all but one of them were brutally murdered by that family of cannibals. The only surviving victim, Sally Hardesty, became a Texas Ranger who hunted elusive serial killer Leatherface for decades, but dang it, she never found the guy.

Ready for another legacy requel? Aka, a film, much like “Halloween” (2018), that disregards the entire canon of all the sequels that have arrived since the original opened and takes place after the events of the first film, acting as a new “proper” sequel? That’s “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” from a filmmaking team that includes Fede Alvarez (“Evil Dead“) and co-writer of the 1974 classic “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” Kim Henkel.

When “Nanny” won the 2022 Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival this week, director Nikyatu Jusu became only the second woman in the history of the festival to take home the top prize. But “Nanny” was historic for another reason, too: It was the first outright horror movie to win the most coveted award in independent film, one that has anointed breakouts of the past decade ranging from Ryan Coogler to Damien Chazelle.
And it wasn’t alone. Horror and psychological thrillers made themselves known across the Sundance lineup this year, well beyond the insular Midnight section, and many of the filmmakers behind these highlights are available for hire. The industry — and all those soul-searching directors out there — should pay close attention, because this crop of newcomers points to an ideal happy medium between commercial opportunity and artistic growth.

The moment Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” played, it was clear things weren’t going to go as planned for Dan and Melody in the Season 1 finale of Netflix’s wildly popular sci-fi drama Archive 81.
The installment began with Jess recording Melody on her Fisher Price Pxl 2000 camera. This turned out to be the same camera Jess would use to record the cult’s ritual ceremony at the Visser when Melody and Samuel got pulled into the Otherworld, with creepy Iris there to guide the way. Netflix’s upcoming “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” the direct sequel to 1974’s “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” is paying service to fans of the original by bringing back John Larroquette to narrate the opening of the film. Larroquette’s legendary news brief at the start of the the 1974 film was meant to scare audiences by grounding the film in true crime. In reality, the plot was loosely by the crimes of murderer Ed Gein.
The horror classic was Larroquette’s first film appearance, before gaining fame in series such as “Night Court,” “The John Larroquette Show” and “Boston Legal.” Larroquette is set to resume his “Night Court” role of Dan Fielding in a series sequel currently in development at NBC. Larroquette also lent his voice to the 2003 reboot “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”
Variety spoke with “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” director David Blue Garcia about how critical it was to bring Larroquette back for the key role.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is back, baby! After the disaster known as Texas Chainsaw 3D that tried to reboot the franchise and Leatherface failed to reinvigorate the series, David Blue Garcia steps into the director’s chair for another remake. This time, Netflix’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre will forget all of the sequels following the original film like Texas Chainsaw 3D, but since that movie turned out horribly then that route is a bust. This time, the events will come squarely after the horrific crime scene of the 1974 film where influencers are looking to breathe new life into a Texas ghost

As the Hollywood blockbuster machine continues to dust itself off and release some early winter hits, Hulu is going in a bit of a different direction with its list of new releases for November 2021.
There are no big Hulu original films of note this month. Instead there’s a whole host of original series. The TV parade starts on Nov. 5 with the release of Animaniacs season 2. Also getting a second season this month is monarchal comedy The Great on Nov. 19. The most intriguing series, however, is animated Marvel comedy Marvel’s Hit Monkey. As its name so graciously implies, this is a show about a hit monkey…as in monkey assassin. Naturally the hit monkey is haunted by the ghost of Jason Sudeikis because it’s important that everything make sense.
Though Hulu doesn’t have any original movies in November, its list of library movie titles is quite vast.
