Coming off the high-profile defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard, Johnny Depp’s Jeanne du Barry, which debuted at Cannes last year, was seen as his big acting comeback. While Depp stressed he was grateful for the opportunity, critics were left less than thrilled about the French drama, as despite commending the film’s direction, it was deemed serviceable at best.
With the film finally set to debut in the US next month, director Maïwenn recalled her experience filming with a returning Depp, alleging the actor wasn’t the most professional to work with.

A couple decades ago, legendary filmmaker David Lynch – who we have to thank for Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, the 1984 version of Dune, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway, The Straight Story, and Mulholland Drive, among other things – started working with The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, The Addams Family, and Welcome to Marwen writer Caroline Thompson on the screenplay for an animated movie called Snootworld… and even though the Netflix streaming service recently turned down the chance to bring Snootworld into our world, Lynch told Deadline that he’s not giving up on getting the movie made.
Lynch said, “I don’t know when I started thinking about Snoots but I’d do these drawings of Snoots and then a story started to emerge. I got together with Caroline and we worked on a script. Just recently I thought someone might be interested in getting behind this...

Deep in the morass of unmade David Lynch films––among the better-known likes Ronnie Rocket, One Saliva Bubble, Antelope Don’t Run No More, and Dune Messiah––is Snootworld, an animated, family-friendly project his ex-wife Peggy Reavey once claimed would be “David’s Harry Potter.” Some two decades since he began writing a script with Caroline Thompson and fifteen-or-so years since the last bit of speculation, Lynch has––in a somewhat uncharacteristic move––announced his hopes to find financing in an interview with Deadline.
This after, Lynch tells us, Netflix rejected a pitch for the feature, which Thompson revealed is the story of Snoots, “tiny creatures who have a ritual transition at aged eight at which time they get tinier and they’re sent away for a year so they are protected.” In yet another of his riffs on Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz, chaos ensues “when...

Exclusive: Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive director David Lynch tells us he is hoping to find backers for his under-the-radar animated project Snootworld, even if Netflix recently “rejected” his “fairytale” pitch.
Screen legend Lynch has said little publicly about Snootworld until now and in recent months he has quietly tried to breathe life into the project by seeking out a financier.
He began working on the script two decades ago with former Tim Burton collaborator Caroline Thompson, writer of projects including The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands, as well as 1991 hit The Addams Family.

Barry Sonnenfeld's 1991 film "The Addams Family," based on the New Yorker comic strips by Chas Addams and extrapolated from the 1964 sitcom of the same name, was a pop culture clarion call for aspiring young goths the world over. The Addams Family were a gaggle of murderous weirds who lived in a haunted mansion, kept a severed human hand as a pet, and regularly engaged in cute family games wherein they exhumed long-dead relatives. They loved blood, sex, and magic. It's possible they were immortal; the young Wednesday (Christina Ricci) regularly murdered her brother Pugsley (Jimmy Workman). Morticia (Anjelica Huston) and Gomez (Raul Julia) were sexually active to an enviable degree, perhaps standing as one of the healthiest, most sex-positive couples in movies at the time. They were full of zest and joie de vivre. Only they were obsessed with death, so perhaps the term should be joie de mourir.

Johnny Depp is undoubtedly one of the biggest actors in the world right now, who made a name for himself in iconic films such as Edward Scissorhands, Donnie Brasco and of course – Pirates of The Caribbean. With that said, Depp’s reaction to seeing Winona Ryder for the first time after their split up is beyond priceless.
Pirates of the Caribbean
Johnny Depp’s role as the ever-loveable yet whimsical Captain Jack Sparrow catapulted him to a level of success not seen before his time. This is especially true considering the fact that before him, pirate movies never really received any widespread acclaim. That charm was inherent in him, which is why he was once together with Winona Ryder — something that fans were envious of.

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is indeed one of Disney’s most famous and successful franchises to date. Before Winona Ryder was known for "Stranger Things," she was known for being "strange and unusual." At least, that's how her character in 1988's "Beetlejuice" put it. The actor would become a goth icon following her role in Tim Burton's 1988 effort, "Beetlejuice," with appearances in "Heathers" (1989), and "Edward Scissorhands" (1990) further cementing her alt-girl status. But there's no doubt "Beetlejuice" was where it all began.
The actor starred as Lydia Deetz, the teenage daughter of Charles and Delia, who move into a new house in Winter River, Connecticut, only to find it haunted by the ghost with the most himself, Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton). In the movie, Keaton's rambunctious supernatural miscreant was hired to spook the Deetz family by the former owners of the house, Barbara and Adam Maitland (Geena Davis and Alex Baldwin), who suddenly found themselves in the afterlife following a car accident. Lydia, meanwhile, becomes somewhat of...

Valentine’s Day may be a day of love, but there’s something about fear and murder that really gets the heart racing. Forget the countless Christmas rom-coms or Technicolor musical romances out there; sometimes, the most swoon-worthy romance is one between a human and a literal monster.
On the surface, horror and romance are two genres that shouldn’t mix well together; one exposes the worst and most disturbing cruelty humanity has to offer, while the other is meant to show the most tender and beautiful feelings we have. But as long as horror has been a genre, it’s been mixed with romance to frequently stellar results. Some of the earliest horror monsters, like vampires, are inherently sexual beings: their powers clear metaphors for intercourse and their ability to allure and entice humans with their beauty a key part of what makes them dangerous. No icebreakers are needed when it comes to kicking off conversation with Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody and first-time feature filmmaker Zelda Williams, who arrived for a mid-week, Midtown-located breakfast with IndieWire with nothing but smiles. Their first collaboration, ’80s-set horror comedy “Lisa Frankenstein,” blends together their seemingly mutual obsessions, and is ripe for fun conversation.
Still, this writer had to ask something kind of silly to get it going: like, oh, have they heard from the Lisa Frank people? Cody laughed. No, they haven’t called!
“Here’s the thing, the fact that the movie’s called ‘Lisa Frankenstein’ is actually kind of a coincidence, because I knew it was going to be an ’80s classic Gen X girl name plus Frankenstein for the title,” the writer said. She cycled through some names, like Stacy and Heather, before landing on Lisa, like the built-from-scratch leading lady in “Weird Science,” a film that “super-duper inspired” her.

15 years ago Diablo Cody and Karyn Kusama joined forced to deliver "Jennifer's Body," a genuine cult classic that went from mismarketed box office failure maligned by critics who didn't understand its brilliance, to the reclaimed favorite that became one of the selling points in the marketing for "Lisa Frankenstein." Cody returns to the teen horror comedy space alongside Zelda Williams (in her feature directorial debut) with a zany, heartfelt, and unapologetically odd story about a particularly peculiar high school outcast named Lisa (Kathryn Newton) who goes on a murderous adventure with the reanimated corpse of a young man — whose grave she hangs out at — in search of new limbs, a sense of autonomy, and maybe even love.
Set against the backdrop of the candy-coated neon bubblegum of the 1980s, "Lisa Frankenstein" makes no qualms about being for weirdos, and by weirdos. It's the resulting lovechild of a raucous orgy between "Edward Scissorhands,...

I recently recapped the fascinating Best Actor race of 2003, in which saw Sean Penn in “Mystic River” win the first of his two Best Actor Oscars. (He would prevail again five years later for “Milk.”)
Regarding Penn’s first victory, he faced stiff competition not only from Bill Murray in “Lost in Translation” but also Johnny Depp in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” Depp hadn’t initially been considered much of a threat — until he pulled off a huge upset at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
A dedicated Gold Derby reader has since asked me how Depp managed to surprise at SAG. Figuring that others might be wondering the same thing, I thought that I would offer everyone in awards land my Top 5 reasons why. And here they are.

“The Nightmare Before Christmas” creator Tim Burton and “Gone Girl” writer Gillian Flynn are tackling a remake of “Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman” for Warner Bros.
Burton is directing the upcoming film from a script by Flynn. The science-fiction horror story follows a wealthy heiress who grows into a giant after an alien encounter and exacts revenge on her cheating husband. It’s unclear how closely this new take will follow the original 1958 movie, starring Allison Hayes, William Hudson and Yvette Vickers. The first film reportedly carried a budget of just $88,000 — so it’s reasonable to assume the remake will have a slightly higher price tag.
The project reteams Burton with Warner Bros., where he is currently working on the sequel to his 1988 movie “Beetlejuice.” The follow-up film about a pesky poltergeist, newly and fittingly titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” will be released in theaters on Sept. 6. Tim Burton's "Batman Returns" is one of the more unusual blockbusters of its era. Following the massive, massive success of his 1989 "Batman," Burton was seemingly given a lot more creative leeway with his sequel, transforming the world of Batman into a noir carnival nightmare of hopelessness and kink. "Returns" saw the Dark Knight (Michael Keaton) facing off against the sewer-dwelling creep the Penguin (Danny DeVito) and beginning an unhealthy flirtation with the mentally unwell Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer).
Burton's rendition of Catwoman may be the best Batman villain to have been depicted in live-action. She was unbalanced and terrifying, using her newfound mindset as a tool for liberation. It's no coincidence that her costume is a skintight leather vinyl costume with a corset and a whip. This was Catwoman as a horror movie dominatrix. She had more in common with the Cenobites from "Hellraiser" than anything from a Batman comic book.

The owner may be a real Grinch, but Max has some pretty magical presents to offer subscribers this holiday season.
Every year sees new Christmas movies pumped out to meet the insatiable demand of the Yuletide-obsessed. But the holidays are more often a time when people revisit the classics from their childhood or someone else’s, and it’s no surprise that Max and its deep film library — thanks to Warner Bros. Discovery’s Turner Classic Movie collection — has pound for pound the most seasonal mainstays of any streamer.
The riches of the platform include Golden Age of Hollywood favorites like “The Shop Around the Corner.” Lesser known than James Stewart ‘s other Christmas movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” the Budapest-set film about two warring coworkers who fall in love as pen pals is a real holiday treat with gorgeous, spiky chemistry between Stewart and his costar Margaret Sullavan. Say it once, say it twice — but say it a third time and expect an explosion of chaotic supernatural hilarity. That was the premise of "Beetlejuice," the second feature film from director Tim Burton. Released in 1988, the film focused on newly dead couple Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis), whose quaint country house was posthumously sold to Charles and Delia Deetz (Jeffrey Jones and Catherine O'Hara). Adam and Barbara, however, remain in their home, as ghosts, horrified by the bizarre architectural changes being made to their beloved home by its obnoxious new owners. Taking advice from "The Handbook for the Recently Deceased," the Maitlands attempt to haunt their unwanted roommates into leaving — a tactic that proves unsuccessful when the Deetzes remain utterly oblivious to their efforts to scare them out.
The Deetz's death-obsessed teenage daughter, Lydia (Winona Ryder), can see the Maitlands, and befriends them. Just when all seems hopeless,...

Tim Burton loves to make things spooky and morbid, but his favorite holiday might well be Christmas. Look at how many of his films take place during the Yuletide season: "Batman Returns," "Edward Scissorhands," etc. He also conceived of "The Nightmare Before Christmas," which is all about Halloween Town's top ghoul, Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon), getting Christmas fever. While Burton handed off directing duties of the stop-motion picture to Henry Selick, it's easy to see his fingerprints and why he would empathize with Jack.
David A. Bossert's "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas Visual Companion" was released this year for the film's 30th anniversary. The book features interviews with the film's crew, from Selick to Art Director Kelly Asbury, where they describe forming the film's distinct visual style — since there were multiple holiday-themed dimensions, they couldn't stick to just one aesthetic.

Tim Burton is a filmmaker who has created some of the most iconic films of the past several decades. Films like “Beetlejuice,” “Batman,” “Edward Scissorhands,” and even “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure.” But you could make a case that his most popular and influential film of all time is “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” And interestingly enough, he didn’t even direct it.

If you were around when "The Nightmare Before Christmas" first opened in theaters, it might freak you out to learn that it's been 30 years since then. The film, adapted from a story by Tim Burton and directed by Henry Selick, tells the musical tale of Jack Skellington, the King of Halloween Town, who is having an emotional crisis. He's looking for something different and new when he comes across doors for other holiday towns. When he visits Christmas Town, he thinks it will be much better than what he has. He returns to Halloween Town and tries to get the spooky residents to embrace Christmas, which they do, but in their own, unique and creepy way.
Elfman, who was the lead vocalist and played rhythm guitar for the band Oingo Boingo at the time, composed the music for the film in just around 30 days.

This morning, Suntup Editions has announced a fine press limited edition of the 1971 novel Hell House by Richard Matheson, featuring new exclusive material including an introduction by R.C. Matheson, a foreword by Mike Flanagan and afterword by Nancy A. Collins.
In his foreword, Flanagan reveals that had there been a third season of his ‘Haunting’ series for Netflix, it would have been an adaptation of Hell House!
Flanagan explains, “When I adapted Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House as a Netflix series, there was much talk about how to continue the Haunting anthology. We followed Hill House with The Haunting of Bly Manor, based on numerous ghost stories by Henry James. Had there been a third season, I wanted that season to be The Haunting of Hell House. When Henry Selick's animated fantasy "The Nightmare Before Christmas" was first released in October of 1993, it wasn't an overwhelming hit. Made for a budget of $20 million, the film only opened to about $191,000 in its first weekend. It would eventually crawl its way to a respectable but not mind-blowing $50 million overall. Disney, the film's distributor, clearly had little faith in the project and released it under its Touchstone label, feeling it was too weird for little kids. Only a small segment of passionate teenage Tim Burton fans latched onto it (Burton designed the film and wrote the poem on which the script is based), and it was the weirdos and Goths who bought it on VHS and committed the film to memory. For a few brief, sweet years, "Nightmare" was little more than a legitimate cult phenomenon.

Based on Tim Burton's 1982 gothic poem, "A Nightmare Before Christmas" has become a seasonal classic that's come close to eclipsing "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" as the quintessential holiday movie. Whether you and your family watch it over Halloween or Christmas (or both), the macabre musical is just as much of a staple during the Fall months as candy corn and eggnog.
Together, stop-motion master Henry Selick ("Coraline"), screenwriter Caroline Thompson ("Edward Scissorhands"), and composer Danny Elfman executed Burton's original vision perfectly, creating a world where each holiday exists within a magical realm unto itself where the inhabitants can celebrate all year round. Originally, Elfman was tasked with writing the songs and music, in addition to voicing lead character Jack Skellington, the so-called "Pumpkin King" of Halloween Town. Johnny Depp had a couple of tough choices when it came to who would be his love interest in The Rum Diary. Ultimately, Amber Heard was picked over Scarlett Johansson, which both Heard and Depp believed was the right decision.

Heard and Depp first met each other on the set of The Rum Diary. The movie was based on the novel of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson, a novelist who Depp knew personally. But before Heard, there were other actors who were eyeing the role. Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson were reportedly in the running to play Depp’s co-star. But Heard, who was still a bit of a newcomer back then, would snatch the role from both stars. To Heard, a more fitting choice couldn’t have been made.

The high school world is one of pure chaos. What else would you expect when you pack a bunch of teenagers pumped full of raging hormones into the same tight-knit space? It's the kind of environment that could lead to a student developing, I dunno ... a crush on a really cute corpse.

Winona Ryder has had her career ups and downs since she made her film debut at age 15 as a high-schooler who befriends Corey Haim, her bully-targeted classmate, in 1986’s “Lucas.” She reigned as one of the most in-demand film actresses in the ‘90s as she transitioned into more adult roles. Ryder hit an unfortunate speed bump in 2001, after she faced shoplifting charges for stealing $5,500 worth of merchandise from a Saks Fifth Avenue department store. She ended up sentenced to three years of probation, 480 hours of community service and various fines while receiving both psychological and drug counseling.
Ryder took time off from acting between the time of her arrest until 2005, when she appeared in a string of indie films. But her true comeback arrived in J.J. Abrams‘ 2009 “Star Trek” reboot as Spock’s human mother Amanda Grayson. These days, she is best known as single mother Joyce Byers, whose...

Back in 1820, author Washington Irving created a short story entitled The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. It brought to life the haunting character of The Headless Horseman. Andy Muschietti's recent superhero flick "The Flash" hoped to lure in audiences with a sprawling story that spans several parallel universes. It was the same approach taken by John Watts in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and Sam Raimi in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," in that all three films assembled multiple versions of certain superhero characters culled from various extant movie franchises. "The Flash" contains the Ben Affleck version of Batman as he appeared in Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," as well as the Michael Keaton version of Batman as he appeared in Tim Burton's 1989 film called merely "Batman." The Flash, he finds, can run so fast that he can travel into alternate timelines.

San Marcos, Calif – There was an Alan Arkin for every generation. Post World War Two adults may have seen him at Chicago’s “The Second City.” Baby Boomers remember his films “Wait Until Dark” and “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians are Coming” and Gen X saw him in “The In-Laws”, “Glengarry Glen Ross” and his Oscar winning turn in “Little Miss Sunshine.” He even did a Netflix series, “The Kominsky Method.” For every generation, for every form of acting, there was Alan Arkin. He passed away on June 29th, 2023, at the age of 89.
Alan Wolf Arkin was born in Brooklyn, and started acting at age 10. After not graduating from two colleges he joined The Second City in 1960 Chicago, one year after it was founded.
