On April 5th, 20th Century Studios gave a theatrical release to The First Omen, which serves as a prequel to the 1976 horror classic The Omen (watch it Here) – and the movie was surprisingly well-received, with JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray giving it an 8/10 review and Tyler Nichols writing an article about why it works so well. The movie hasn’t been burning up the box office charts; made on a budget of $30 million, it has only pulled in $36 million so far. But if a sequel were to get the greenlight, director Arkasha Stevenson knows one subject she would want to cover in the follow-up: the mystery of the jackal.
In the original The Omen, we were told that the Antichrist was born of a jackal. The First Omen digs deeper into his parentage, letting us know that it wasn’t quite as simple (although very strange) as it appeared to be in the original movie,...

The infamous Satanic Panic is often referred to as the 20th century equivalent of the Salem Witch Trials, with innocent heavy metal fans and Dungeons & Dragons players being accused of worshipping Satan while apocalyptic conspiracy theories about the rise of the Antichrist and the supposed “Mark of the Beast” ran rampant amongst radical believers. However, what a lot of people don’t know is that horror cinema played an accidentally crucial role in inspiring this regrettable era of prejudice and misinformation.
In fact, there are a handful of specific horror films that informed most of the fears we now associate with the Satanic Panic, with some of the most influential being Richard Donner’s 1977 classic The Omen and its numerous follow-ups. Despite playing fast and loose with their religious influences, these movies would go on to popularize then-obscure bits of biblical lore (like the Satanic connotations of “666”) that most...

Damien Thorn is the antichrist, and the trilogy that tells his unholy tale remains popular almost fifty years later. Indeed, while putting together this Omen movie ranked list and revisiting the original franchise, I was surprised at how well the old movies held up. Omen fans will be happy that the series has been restarted in a pretty interesting way this weekend, with The First Omen a surprisingly excellent prequel to the original trilogy (check out our interviews with the director and cast here), even if it takes one large liberty involving Damien’s birth that some fans may have an issue with. So, how do the Omen films rank against each other? Let’s take a look, but remember that the Fox TV movie, Omen IV: The Awakening, is not included, as I’m sticking with feature films.
The Omen (2006):
There’s honestly no reason for this movie to exist.

Plot: A young novitiate in Rome (Nell Tiger Free) is warned by an ex-communicated priest (Ralph Ineson) that she’s at the center of a sinister conspiracy at her church dedicated to spawning the anti-Christ.
Review: I’ve always really enjoyed The Omen as a franchise. Even as a kid, I found something about the original trilogy centring around Damien Thorn especially gripping. However, I never had much use for the cheap TV movie sequel (Omen IV: The Awakening) or the scene-for-scene remake, which, despite a game cast, didn’t come close to recapturing the grisly spirit of Richard Donner’s original.
As such, I figured The First Omen would be just another would-be franchise starter, but I have to give 20th Century Studios and Disney credit – they made one hell of a cool horror flick (pun intended). In some ways, it’s a bit like Wonka (bear with...

The episode of The Best of the Bad Guys focusing on Damien Thorn was written, narrated, and edited by Mike Holtz.
The Prince of Darkness. Heir to both Hell and Thorn Industries. The antichrist himself and guy who gets his haircut at Great Clips, Damien Thorn. The titular character of The Omen franchise will be praised not by his usual followers but by us as we dive into the second edition of The Best Of The Bad Guys, where we rank the best work of cinema’s most evil villains.
Damien Thorn’s run of evil has spanned five films including an utterly pointless shot-for-shot remake and a TV series with another prequel on the way in The First Omen. And though The Omen IV: The Awakening doesn’t follow Damien himself; his presence is felt. The franchise started in 1976 with legendary director Richard Donner giving us the first version...

This article contains major spoilers for "The First Omen."Hello folks! Welcome back to Nunsploitation 2024: Battle of the Babies.
When last we left the saga of Damien Thorn, it was 1981, and Damien was played by the devilishly handsome Sam Neill in "The Final Conflict." In that film, the Antichrist nearly fulfilled his evil purpose in halting the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, but was foiled by his one-time lover, journalist Kate Reynolds (Lisa Harrow), who through the grace of God and her own strength was able to fatally stab Damien with the magical dagger of Megiddo, the weapon that poor Robert Thorn (Gregory Peck) failed to use against his adopted son Damien (Harvey Spencer Stephens) when he was a child in 1976.
If a 33-year-old Damien in 1981 seems implausible given that the first film sees Damien as merely five years of age and the 1978 sequel, "Damien: Omen II" follows the...

Over the almost fifty years of its existence, The Omen franchise has been a rollercoaster. The original The Omen was terrifying. The sequel, Damien: Omen II ventured a bit into Final Destination territory, but still had its chills and thrills. Omen III: The Final Conflict went truly crazy yet still remained a horror film, while the television movie Omen IV: The Awakening bordered on the absurd with its unintentional hilarity. And then, in 2006, The Omen received the 21st century’s badge of horror honor/shame – the pointless shot-for-shot remake.
Now, the series is attempting a bounce-back with The First Omen.
Just as its title suggests, The First Omen takes place before the events of The Omen. Set in 1971, the story revolves around a young American nun-to-be named Margaret (Nell Tiger Free from...

I am not sure the world asked for yet another take on 20th Century Fox’s Omen franchise, the constantly regurgitated series with Damien (who made the numbers 666 iconic) and company. Since the 1976 original, when Damien first appeared in the movie with Gregory Peck and Lee Remick, we have had Damien: Omen II, The Final Conflict, Omen IV: The Awakening (in which a girl becomes the antichrist for the first time), the 2006 remake The Omen, and even a 2016 Damien TV series. Of course, like all these horror franchises, it is inevitable someone would come up with the idea for an origin story, and that is what we now have with The First Omen, which is, of course, not the first, just the latest. But, set in 1971, it does attempt to take us right to the doorstep of the actual first, the Richard Donner-directed 1976 starter.

This 70s-set prelude to the classic satanic horror has flair but struggles with the weight and familiarity of what came before
We didn’t need a prequel to landmark 1976 horror The Omen but we’d have been foolish not to expect one. The major genre films of that era – Halloween, The Exorcist, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Alien, Suspiria – have all seen a new round of remakes, reboots and remixes in the last few years – some tolerable, most not – and so another Damien chapter is as inevitable as the rise of Damien himself.
It’s not the first time anyone has tried either. After the series sputtered out in 1991 with the cheapo gender-swapped TV movie Omen IV: The Awakening, the films went the way of most horror during that decade and it took until 2006, a time of anything-goes, mostly gutter-level remakes, for the sixes to align once again. It was a...

When compared to "classier" Satanic contemporaries like "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Exorcist," Richard Donner's 1976 hit "The Omen" is the pulpiest of the lot. "The Omen" had no interest in the sexist panic of the former, nor the religious angst of the latter, settling instead in the realm of spooky thrillers, replete with cool kills, portentous Satanic language, and an awesome score (a score that brought Jerry Goldsmith his only Oscar). There's no ambiguity to "The Omen," being clear from the start that Gregory Peck and Lee Remick are indeed raising the Antichrist. The pop Satanism "The Omen" introduced into the lexicon has now become standard horror fare, and was even spoofed at length in the TV series "Good Omens."
"The Omen" spawned one okay sequel ("Damien: Omen II" in 1978), one risibly bad sequel ("The Final Conflict" in 1981), and one miserably bad sequel ("Omen IV: The Awakening" in 1991) before succumbing...

The Exorcist sequel, The Exorcist: Believer, didn’t wow horror fans or critics in 2022. 20th Century Studios is hoping for a better reception for their The Omen prequel, The First Omen. “The First Omen,” a prequel to the 1976 horror film “The Omen,” has released its terrifying first trailer.
It follows a woman, Margaret (Nell Tiger Free), who goes to Rome to fully commit to the church. However, she soon faces the emergence of a deadly evil.
Along with Tiger Free, the cast of the horror film includes Bill Nighy, Ralph Ineson and Sônia Braga. The pteque marks the feature directorial debut of Arkasha Stevenson. The writers are Stevenson, Tim Smith and Keith Thomas from a story by Ben Jacoby.
“The Omen” told the story of Robert Thorn (Gregory Peck) and his wife, Katherine “Kathy” Thorn (Lee Remick), adopting a son whom they name Damien (Harvey Spencer Stevens). After a series of ominous events, including Damien deliberately knocking Kathy over a balcony and causing her to miscarry, it is revealed that Damien is the son of Satan and the Antichrist. In 1976, audiences were introduced to Damien, a little kid with jet-black hair who may or may not be the Antichrist (spoiler: he is/was). In "The Omen," a diplomat (Gregory Peck) and his wife (Lee Remick) become the parents of a bouncing baby boy. But there's a twist: the diplomat is told that their actual baby died during childbirth. Rather than go home empty-handed, Peck's character is convinced to adopt another baby. He passes the child off as his own and neglects to tell his wife about the whole "our real kid died" thing. Men, am I right? Anyway, as it turns out, the child the couple welcomes into their home ends up being the spawn of Satan, and that could spell certain doom for us all.
"The Omen," which was helmed by "Superman" director Richard Donner, was a box office hit and has since become a horror classic.

Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.
Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Part family drama, part murder mystery, the show features a globetrotting story that will cover decades of events after a bereaved family find a flash drive that contains some shocking secrets about the hidden history of their late matriarch.

Six years have gone by since we first heard that 20th Century Fox was developing a prequel to the horror classic The Omen (watch it Here), a prequel that was to be titled The First Omen. Now going by the slightly shorter title First Omen, the project is still moving forward after Fox was acquired by Disney. A few months ago, it was announced that the film will be directed by Arkasha Stevenson – who has previously directed episodes of the genre shows Channel Zero, Legion, and Brand New Cherry Flavor. Now Deadline reports that First Omen has found its lead, as Nell Tiger Free of the Apple TV+ series Servant has signed on to star in the film. This will be her first leading role in a major studio film.

Mace Neufeld, the producer whose star-driven action films were blockbusters, died overnight in his sleep at his home in Beverly Hills, his family told Deadline. He was 93.
Neufeld’s hit films included The Omen and its sequels, The Equalizer pics and several adaptations of Tom Clancy-penned Jack Ryan thrillers including Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, The Sum of All Fears and The Hunt for Red October. He was Emmy-nominated for East of Eden and exec produced the Prime Video series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan starring John Kasinski.
A family friend told Deadline that Neufeld was working on a third Equalizer pic and another Tom Clancy series for Prime Video at the time of his death.
Neufeld was at his zenith in the ’90s when, with partner Bob Rehme, he formed Neufeld/Rehme and produced a string of hit films such as Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games and Beverly Hills Cop III.

Brian Taggert, the screenwriter for Poltergeist III and Visiting Hours, died at age 81 at home in Los Angeles on June 1. His death was confirmed by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Taggert had a varied career as a TV and film writer. His television resume from the 1970s includes episodes of Adam-12 and Emergency!, as well as the 1984 NBC miniseries V: The Final Battle. He later worked on the V series that lasted a season, and had three telefilms on his resume:1974’s The Mark of Zorro, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? and Omen IV: The Awakening.
He turned to film in the 1980s and scored a feature with the slasher picture Visiting Hours in 1982. The film depicted actress Lee Grant as a TV journalist targeted by serial killer Michael Ironside.

And so it was written, that a beast would come in the form of film, and that film would beget others due to profit, and those films would spread across the horror landscape to mostly whispered calls of, “meh”. Not for this little demon, however; as all of The Omen films work for me in one way or another, bringing us to number four and the first for the small screen, Omen IV: The Awakening (1991). The script gets flipped, yet it’s more of the same, and I’m not complaining.
Originally broadcast as part of the Fox Night at the Movies, Omen IV was trounced by ABC’ MacGyver on one side, CBS’ Murphy Brown/Designing Women on the other, and NBC’s Fresh Prince/Blossom on the other other. And as expected, no sins lain upon the critics were forgiven. This thing got roasted on the coals of Hell itself.

The Omen may be 40 years old this year, but it's somehow become the hottest property in horror in 2016. In addition to A&E's sequel series Damien (which, truth be told, isn't garnering the kind of ratings the network probably hoped for), an Omen prequel movie is now in the works with indie darling Antonio Campos -- whose 2016 biopic Christine, about tragic Florida TV reporter Christine Chubbuck, was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival -- attached to direct. Fittingly titled The First Omen, the film is being produced by David Goyer for 20th Century Fox, the studio behind both the original film and its three less-successful sequels, including the made-for-tv stinker Omen IV: The Awakening. I actually rewatched The Omen fairly recently, and truth be told, I'd forgotten how hokey the thing is. The fact that it grossed boatloads of money in 1976 makes sense: it's broadly entertaining,...

Horror fans have something new to scream about as 20th Century Fox is planning a prequel to The Omen. According to THR.com, the studio is looking to revisit the 1976 classic about a young boy who may just be the son of Satan. That movie, which starred Gregory Peck and Lee Remick and was directed by Richard Donner, won an Oscar for Best Original Score. It also earned Harvey Stephens a Golden Globe nomination for his role as Damian. The publication is reporting that Fox is looking to Antonio Campos as a potential director. Campos was most recently behind the camera for the film Christine. That movie is about the on-air suicide by television reporter Christine Chubbuck. The Omen grossed an inflation-adjusted $240 million. It also led three follow-ups: Damien: The Omen Part II (1978), Omen III: The Final Conflict (1981) and the made-for-tv Omen IV: The Awakening (1991). The original movie was remade...

Are you ready for a "dark, romantic" incarnation of Satanic tyke Damien? Lifetime sure hopes so, because the cable network has ordered a six episode straight-to-series sequel to "The Omen," fittingly titled "Damien." "Damien" comes from "The Shield" and "The Walking Dead" veteran Glen Mazzara and Fox Television Studios. The project will premiere on Lifetime in 2015, with Ross Fineman and Pancho Mansfield also executive producing. “We are thrilled to be bringing a contemporary version of 'The Omen’s' Damien Thorn back to the screen," blurbs Lifetime Evp Rob Sharenow. "Glen Mazzara has re-imagined him as a dark, romantic, anti-hero and this fresh take blends complex characters with premium storytelling to make something truly original." Adds Fox TV Studios Svp Nancy Cotton, "'The Omen' is a jewel in the crown of the Fox features library; we’re gratified and eager to bring a new iteration of ‘Damien’ and...

Lifetime are preparing a new horror series based on Richard Donner's 1976 classic 'The Omen'. The show entitled 'Damien' will focus on the adult Damien who will serve as the main protagonist as he comes to grips with his 'demonic destiny'. 'The Walking Dead's ex-showrunner Glen Mazarra will serve as an executive producer as well as writing the show. 'The Omen' was followed up in 1978 and then in 1981 with 'Damien: Omen II' and 'Omen III: The Final Conflict' respectively with Sam Neill ('Jurassic Park') taking the role of the grown up Damien Thorn in the third entry. It wasn't until 1991 that a 'Omen IV: The Awakening' was released as a TV movie moving the demonic focus from the now dead Damien to a young girl instead. We assume the action from the new series will take place somewhere in between the two unless it'll...

Success breeds more success and that’s entirely true in Hollywood. A movie that makes money at the box office, will surely get a sequel. About fifteen years ago, the stigma in Hollywood was that they couldn’t make a good sequel. That has elapsed, thankfully, but the new stigma is that all part fours suck. With so many franchises looking to continue that bank roll, and in this economy, anything with name recognition is golden, that stigma might be more than just theory amongst us. It seems like it’s hitting Hollywood’s attention.
[On Jaws: The Revenge] is not simply a bad movie, but also a stupid and incompetent one – a ripoff. – Roger Ebert (here)
But let’s back track, and let’s see these dubious horrible fours. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Batman and Robin. Jaws: The Revenge. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Rocky IV. Alien Resurrection.
