Dolls, dolls, and more dolls! The horror genre is an ever-twisting blade that goes in deep when a good, and original concept is copied, replicated, and beaten over the head until it’s nothing more than a watered-down caricature. They say imitation is the biggest form of flattery, but are we so sure about that? Today I have an interesting Horror Movie Rip-off between two evil entities covered in rubber that cherish their higher gods and massacring anyone and everyone in their path. One that spawned countless sequels, tv shows, a cemented horror legacy, and worldwide notoriety, while the other I may have glanced at on the racks of my local blockbuster back in the day.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.” Although the column usually includes several items about different celebs and industry insiders, this week’s Pride edition is solely about casting director Jeffrey Drew’s participation in an experimental treatment study for an HIV cure and the documentary short that chronicles his journey. It’s been 40 years since the CDC reported the first cases of what would later become known as AIDS. Here is one man’s story to help find a long overdue cure.
Jeffrey Drew was diagnosed with HIV about 34 years ago when he was just 23. Since then he’s taken various antiviral drugs that have kept him alive. “You name it and I’ve been on it,” Drew says. But in October 2019, the longtime Los Angeles-based casting director stopped taking his latest regimen — two pills daily — as part of an experimental trial for an HIV cure. Florence Pugh is attached to star in a sci-fi courtroom drama called “Dolly” about a sex robot that murders its billionaire owner. Though the film has not yet been greenlit, Apple TV+ acquired it in a bidding war, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Vanessa Taylor and Drew Pearce are writing the script, which is still being developed. No director is currently attached.
“Dolly” is inspired by a short story from Elizabeth Bear that first appeared in “Asimov’s Science Fiction” in 2011. Child’s Play has a lot to answer for… actually scratch that. The killer doll cliche in horror films goes back a lot further than that , in fact it goes all the way back to the 1930s with The Devil-Doll. Since then there have been a myriad of killer doll (or killer toy to be more precise) films – culminating in the late 80s renaissance and films like Child’s Play, Dolls, Puppet Master, Dolly Dearest; hell, even the Silent Night, Deadly Night franchise switched to killer toys for its fifth instalment in 1991.. The idea of dolls and toys coming to life and attacking their owners is one that still instills fear in audiences. If the films are done right that is.

Netflix was ahead of the game for October, releasing its “Netflix and Chills” horror lineup in anticipation of the Halloween season. Now the streaming giant has unveiled its full lineup for October, and believe it or not: horror remains at the forefront of its strategy.
The biggest release this month is undoubtedly The Haunting of Bly Manor, Mike Flanagan’s long-awaited followup to terrifying Haunting of Hill House. That arrives on Oct. 9. The film side of things is where most of Netflix’s other horror originals reside, with Hubie Halloween (Oct. 7), A Babysitters’ Guide to Monster Hunting (Oct. 15), and Rebecca (Oct. 22) all making their debut.
Some non-horror originals of note this month include high school drama Grand Army (Oct. 16) and the Anya-Taylor Joy-starring chess story The Queen’s Gambit (Oct. 26). Aaron Sorkin’s latest film, The Trial of the Chicago 7, arrives on Oct. 16.
