Visual effects veteran Tim McGovern, who received a Special Achievement Oscar for the VFX in the 1990 sci-fi classic “Total Recall,” has died, his wife Reena NeGandhi announced Saturday on social media. He was 68.
The VFX innovator served as CGI director on Paul Verhoeven’s “Total Recall,” which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and was based on Philip K. Dick’s “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale.” McGovern’s work on the film included the inventive effects used as Schwarzenegger’s Quaid and others pass through a sort of X-ray security check revealing their skeletons.
“We were saddened and shocked by the sudden news of Tim’s untimely passing,” said Kim Davidson, Visual Effects Society board chair, in a statement. “Tim and I have been Ves members and colleagues for many years and his passion and loyalty to the Society were exemplary. Although Wes Craven's 1984 film "A Nightmare on Elm Street" is typically lumped in with slasher movies -- it came out right when the genre was cresting in popularity -- it doesn't quite follow the same structure as its contemporaries in the horror genre. The "Nightmare" movies, because they take place largely within dreams, are slightly more cerebral, bizarre, or imaginative than many of the stalk-n-stab movies that infested theaters at the time. The series also attracted interesting and notable directors who went on to other projects. Chuck Russell directed part 3. Renny Harlin director part 4. Stephen Hopkins directed part 5. And Rachel Talalay directed "The Final Nightmare."

Throughout the mythos concerning the character of Bruce Wayne aka Batman, there is a strong theme of predestination. While made explicit in only a few tales of the Dark Knight throughout the character's 84-year existence, there exists the idea that the orphan Bruce Wayne was able to mold himself into the figure of Batman partially because his whole life prepared him to do just that, mentally if not also physically and emotionally.
1995's "Batman Forever," the third in Warner Bros. and producer Tim Burton's series of live-action adaptations of the character, is one of the stories of the Caped Crusader that highlights this theme in a big way. In the film, Bruce (played by Val Kilmer) is troubled by recurring waking nightmares that psychiatrist Dr. Chase Meridian (Nicole Kidman) deduces are actually repressed memories forcing their way into his conscious mind. In these visions, Bruce recalls the moments after his parents' untimely deaths,...

In 1898, Lt. Colonel John Henry Patterson was sent to Africa on behalf of the British government to oversee the construction of an important railway bridge. Located in the remote Tsavo region of Kenya, the operation employed thousands of laborers and spanned multiple miles of railway track, making it a considerable undertaking for any one person. But John Patterson was up for the daunting task. However, mere days after his arrival, a vicious pair of male lions began targeting and brutally attacking the workers. For more than nine months, the rogue predators used the work camp as their own personal hunting ground, dragging men from their tents at night and killing them for sport. They became known as “Ghost” and “Darkness” by the frightened workers, who believed them to be vengeful spirits defending their ancestral land from the encroaching British empire. With the attacks only getting worse, it was up to...

Hubert G. Wells, who trained animals for films including the original Doctor Dolittle, Out of Africa, Wolf, Sheena and The Ghost and the Darkness, has died. He was 88.
Wells died on Christmas Day of age-related illnesses at his home in Thousand Oaks, fellow animal trainer Doree Sitterly told The Hollywood Reporter.
Sitterly and Wells worked together for 20 years — she doubled for Meryl Streep on Out of Africa while Wells was serving as chief animal trainer on the 1986 Oscar best picture winner — and for 10 of those they lived on a compound in the Santa Monica Mountains that was filled with trained wild animals. Movie monsters are incredible. The greats of Rick Baker, Phil Tippett, and Greg Nicotero — among many others — have rendered screens both small and large as monstrous gateways to unabashed nightmare fuel. Whether culled from mythology or the classics of the genre, these creations are a tentpole of the enduring monster movie or creature feature. However conceptualized, movie monsters are as much a part of what movies innately are as anything else.
Every year brings new monsters to the table. Some are relegated to indie VOD offerings, some theatrical bows, and some in a weird space between. Here, we'll be taking a look at the 10 scariest movie monsters of 2022. These beasties proved frighteningly fun; some rendered with computer effects, some conceived practically, and all stupendously scary. They're destined to take a bite out of you.

Plot: In 1923, the Dutton family, which is now headed by Jacob (Harrison Ford) and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren), are faced with several challenges, including a crew of violent sheepmen led by the vicious Banner (Jerome Flynn), who will not stop grazing on their territory. Meanwhile, the family’s wayward son, Spenser (Brandon Sklenar), who hasn’t been home since WWI, makes a living hunting rogue lions in Africa but may need to return sooner rather than later.
Review: Who would have thought Yellowstone would spawn such a strong franchise? While a long-time devotee of the show, I was wary of the prequel 1883 when it premiered on Paramount Plus last year, only to quickly become immersed in it. Functioning as a limited series, it told one of the best western tales I’ve seen in ages, and for his follow-up, 1923, showrunner Taylor Sheridan has widened his scope beyond anything we’ve seen in the franchise.

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

Humanity versus the natural world is one of those tropes that never gets old. In these stories, the natural world can stand in for a lot of big themes worth discussing. Our mortality is a common one, with stories where the natural world is as persistent as our final end — and happy to get us there in a hurry. Sometimes it's just a test of our will to survive. How far will we go to protect someone or something? Will our desire to overcome adversity fail to stand up against the law of the jungle?
Other times, these stories are just wildly fun. "Beast" relies on being a corny good time, with a look at the sprawling beauty of Africa and a long stare at the chiseled good looks of Idris Elba. He's a dad on a family trip that goes sideways when they come across a huge male lion...

It’s that time of year again, the time when the big summer blockbusters have been out for a while and the fall prestige films are still a few months away. It is a time typically referred to as “the dumping ground,” when studios release films with targeted audiences or ones they simply don’t think will light the box office on fire.

Idris Elba is undeniably the star of Will Packer’s latest movie, “Beast,” but the family story at the heart of Universal’s release was a big draw for the producer who previously shepherded “Girls Trip.” In the movie, debuting in theaters Aug. 19, Elba plays Nate Samuels, a recently widowed doctor who returns to South Africa with his two teenage daughters (Iyana Halley and Leah Sava Jeffries) and must fight to survive from a man-hunting lion.
Packer sought to offer a balance for the late summer movie calendar. “I loved the idea that it just happens to be a Black family in peril,” Packer says. “It’s not just about man versus beast – it’s a man protecting his daughters. It’s universal in those themes.”
Under his banner company of Will Packer Productions, “Beast” is another notch on the mogul’s belt for amplifying Black women as demonstrated by...

"It's the law of the jungle! It's the only law that matters." Universal has debuted the first official trailer for Beast, a new angry lion movie from director Baltasar Kormákur. This reminds me of the 90s hit The Ghost and the Darkness, also about rogue lions attacking people with a similar intensity as this one. Idris Elba stars in a pulse-pounding new thriller about a father and his two teenage daughters who find themselves hunted by a massive rogue lion intent on proving that the savannah has but one apex predator. Iyana Halley plays Daniels' 18-year-old daughter, Meredith, and Leah Sava Jeffries plays his 13-year-old, Norah. Also co-starring Sharlto Copley as the local game reserve manager. There's only two or three real shots of the lion in this trailer, which is obviously CGI. And the final scene in this very much seems like a Jurassic Park riff in the truck...

Fall is upon us, and so is Hulu’s list of every title coming and going from the streaming service in November.
Among the list of arriving titles is a new episode of Hulu’s original monthly anthology series, “Into the Dark.” November’s episode is called “Pilgrim,” and claims to be inspired by true events — in which a woman invites a bunch of Pilgrim re-enactors over for Thanksgiving dinner. But things get spooky when the “actors” refuse to break character.
Other new arrivals include Season 5 of “You’re the Worst,” described as a modern look at love, the complete first seasons of “Dollface,” about a young woman re-entering the world of women, “The Accident,” which begins with a deadly explosion at a construction site, and “Love Island: Australia,” an answer to the U.K. and U.S. versions of the beloved reality dating show.

In the new horror movie “Crawl,” a pack of enormous alligators invades a sleepy Florida town during a violent hurricane and proceeds to rip the cast apart, limb by limb. These nasty gators aren’t the first critters of their kind to terrify audiences, however. Here’s our list of ravenous reptiles, ranked in order from scariest to silliest.
1) Alligator (1980)
Two-time Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Sayles penned this gruesomely entertaining monster mash about a baby gator named Ramón who gets flushed down a toilet and mutates into a 36-foot behemoth lurking in the Chicago sewer system. When his appetite for human flesh gets the better of him, Ramón bursts through the sidewalk and chows down on a horde of terrified locals. Featuring colorful performances from cult film superstars Robert Forster and Henry Silva, plus witty direction from the ever-dependable Lewis Teague, “Alligator” is more than just the best rampaging reptile movie...

The most famous non-fiction line coined by the recently departed screenwriting genius William Goldman is undoubtedly “Nobody knows anything,” a great dig at the expense of Hollywood tastemakers. That statement, coined in one of Goldman’s terrific behind-the-scenes screenwriting memoirs, Adventures In The Screen Trade (1983), was designed to reflect the fact that, essentially, churning out cinematic hits amounted to educated guesswork from everyone involved. When applied to William Goldman’s expert writing — captured across 24 produced screenplays (along with several official consultant jobs and probably dozens of unofficial script doctoring gigs), 16 novels, seven memoirs, an abundance of non-fiction magazine articles, a handful of theatrical plays and teleplays, and a children’s...

The Oscar-winning screenwriter behind “All the President’s Men,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” and “The Princess Bride” has died, but William Goldman’s words will live on indefinitely in his scripts and books. To remember the late screenwriter and author, here are some of his most memorable lines:
The Princess Bride (1987)
“Do you want me to follow you for the rest of your days? I will do that. Do you want me to crawl? I will crawl. I will be quiet for you or sing for you, or if you are hungry, let me bring you food, or if you have thirst and nothing will quench it but Arabian wine, I will go to Araby, even though it is across the world, and bring a bottle back for your lunch. Anything there is that I can do for you, I will do for you; anything there is that I cannot do,...

Prolific, two-time Oscar-winning, screenwriter William Goldman has passed away at age of 87.
William Goldman, one of the film industry’s most consistently successful screenwriters, has passed away this morning at his Manhattan home, having succumbed to complications from colon cancer and pneumonia at the age of 87, as confirmed to The Washington Post by his daughter, Jenny. He leaves behind an array of work that, frankly, is too vast to respectfully summarize in one sentence.
Goldman – the Chicago-born screenwriter who helped launch the career of Robert Redford by writing bellwether buddy movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and would one day write generational film favorite The Princess Bride – started his life as a scribe unsuccessfully in the late-1950s as a novelist, publishing works such as The Temple of Gold, Your Turn to Curtsy, My Turn to Bow and Soldier in the Rain, before ultimately finding his voice in screenwriting,...

There's an old joke among writers about the naive young starlet who thought she could make it in Hollywood by sleeping with screenwriters. Indeed, the people who made it possible for hit films to exist by writing the scenarios the actors carried out on screen were often regarded as being very low on the industry totem pole- and relatively low-paid as well. Not so with novelist and screenwriter William Goldman, who elevated regard for screenwriters while demanding- and receiving- the kind of breakthrough salaries that revolutionized the film industry's respect for writers. Goldman has died from cancer in Manhattan at age 87. He was known to be opinionated, abrasive and demanding, but no one questioned his talents. He won Oscars for "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and "All the President's Men". Among his other...

Most people think that snobby Oscar voters through the decades have turned their backs on the horror genre. Not so. True, far more horror flicks have been nominated for Oscars — including many Alfred Hitchcock movies — than have won. Hitch was nominated six times for Best Director and never took home a gold statue, which is why he was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 1968. “Thank you,” he said, and walked offstage.
We scoured the record books to find 25 Oscar-winning horror movies, and herewith rank them for you.
After heated arguments among the IndieWire staff, we threw out a dozen or so monster movies (“King Kong,” “Mighty Joe Young,” “Jurassic Park”), ghost films (“Ghost”) and scary psychological thrillers like Hitchcock’s “Spellbound” that just didn’t feel like horror flicks to us.
Defining a horror movie is subjective. Is it about gore and guts and supernatural beings, or how it makes you feel?...

After years of speculation that Val Kilmer had been dealing with health issues, the actor decided to finally open up about what exactly he's been going through during a recent Reddit Ama session. After one user asked Val about Michael Douglas publicly saying Val was battling throat cancer back in October, Val confirmed his illness for the first time. "He was probably trying to help me because the press probably asked where I was these days, and I did have a healing of cancer," he said. "But my tongue is still swollen although healing all the time. Because I don't sound my normal self yet people think I may still be under the weather." Michael, who is also a throat cancer survivor, had previously said that his The Ghost and the Darkness costar was "dealing with exactly what I had" and that "things don't look too good for him," adding,...

As we do, we've frozen random new to Amazon Prime titles and grabbed the first screengrab that popped up. Though they're leaning heavily on 1990s titles at the moment, their quality of offerings is far outpacing whatever B pictures Netflix has been licensing of late. Comment Party: Which will you be watching and which of the "new" streaming titles would you most want to read a write-up on this month? I'll obey your consensus command.
Okay on to the random screengrabs.
Every morning the ground is soaked with blood. The workers believe I brought this terror since it didn't begin until my arrival. Whatever I try they seem to know. All the deaths are on me.
The Ghost and the Darkness (1996)
Yes, yes, great Vilmos Zsigmond cinematography, a sound Oscar, and killer lions and but on a scale of 1-100 how kissable were Val Kilmer's lips in his prime?...

The best sound editing category is going to be tough to call at this year’s Oscars, but the race is boiling down to Hacksaw Ridge versus La La Land. While we won’t know who won the Academy’s favor until Sunday, we already know the Motion Picture Sound Editors have honored these two films — among others — at their annual Golden Reel Awards. How often does this society of sound editors predict the corresponding category at the Academy Awards? Let’s take a look and find out.
Nominated alongside Hacksaw Ridge and La La Land in the best sound editing category at this year’s Oscars are Arrival, Sully, and Deepwater Horizon. The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg predicts that Damien Chazelle’s modern musical will take home the trophy by overtaking Mel Gibson’s big Hollywood return.

The film industry has been around for well over 100 years. Today, Cinelinx looks at some of the famous firsts that set the foundation for the movie industry and made cinema what it is today.
As a bit of trivia to begin with, the first known piece of moving film footage was the The Horse in Motion (1878), a 3-second experiment consisting of 24 photographs shot in rapid succession. It’s just a scene of a jockey riding a horse, but it ultimately led to the development of modern film.
Most early films were short, silent bits of daily life, showing such exciting events as boarding a train, which was captured in The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station (1895). This film footage supposedly scared the bejesus out of the viewing audience, who thought a real train was coming at them and ran for cover. Val Kilmer says Michael Douglas apologized to him in writing about his public comments about his health, calling the actor a "classy guy." Kilmer had sparked concern last year after it was revealed he was treated at a hospital twice. Douglas, who starred with Kilmer in the 1996 movie The Ghost and the Darkness, had said in a Q&A event in England in October that the actor "is dealing with exactly what I had, and things don't look too good for him." Douglas is a survivor of stage 4 oral cancer. Kilmer later said, "I love Michael Douglas but he is misinformed." Kilmer took to Facebook again Tuesday and revealed Douglas...
