In Season 3 of the acclaimed “Fargo” FX anthology series, showrunner Noah Hawley continued to play by the Coen brothers’ rules, but got more ambitious and flexible with a present-day crime drama. It’s still about good and evil, only now in cordial Minnesota, with plenty of parables, strong women and weak men. Yet the result was more satisfying in its craftiness and empathy in trying to bring order out of chaos.
And for its efforts, “Fargo” grabbed another 10 craft nominations (cinematography, which it won last year, three for editing, hairstyling, makeup, music score, sound editing, which it also won last year, and mixing). The work seemed more confident and daring, as it focused on various character pairings. It was about mistaken identities, being at the wrong place at the wrong time, and lots of suffering.
As the murders mounted, however, so did the confusion. Sleazy businessman Varga (nominated David Thewlis) prayed on feuding brothers,...

3.4 The Narrow Escape Problem
The narrow escape problem is a term borrowed from biology that refers to a particle that is confined to a bounded domain, but which has a narrow window through which it can escape. Calculating the mean escape time is the the problem that our intrepid biologists seek to solve. (Before you start wondering whether I cribbed that from Wikipedia, let me tell you that yes, that’s exactly what I did and I freely admit so here in a vain effort to indemnify myself against accusations of cheating. You can correct me in the comments). What I can tell you is that,...

There was more than enough narrative complexity for editors to tackle in Emmy contenders “The Crown,” “American Gods,” “This Is Us,” “Fargo,” and “Five Came Back.” But through skill and finesse, they helped make these shows compelling and relevant by cutting through the multiple strands of history, mythology, melodrama, and black comedy.
“The Crown” focused on the public and private personas of Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) in post-war England; “American Gods” explored how Old and New Gods fight for attention in modern society; “This Is Us” chose a non-linear structure to show the influence of the past on millennial siblings; “Fargo” dealt with twin brothers (Ewan McGregor) in a third season of absurd crime shenanigans; and “Five Came Back” revealed how the World War II propaganda campaign changed the lives of directors Frank Capra, John Ford, John Huston, George Stevens, and William Wyler.

Welp, my wife just rage-quit. You see, things got pretty nasty this week in Fargo, no one is spared their misery -- granted, some fared worse than others. At the halfway point we're no closer to realizing the actual plot of this season, which may actually involve no plot at all. It's entirely possible that Fargo Season 3 is some kind of social studies test invented by creator Noah Hawley, to see how far he can push his audience and assess what they're willing to endure in the name of mid-week entertainment. Alas, my wife says, "no más," so I'm on my own from here on out.
We open on a lovely scene of blackmail via sex tape -- its 2010, the height of such idiocy in America. A package left at the Stussy doorstep, marked for Emmit's "eyes only," but Mrs. Stussy (Linda Kash) returns home early, opens the package, and plays the tape.

(Every week, we’re going to kick off discussion about Fargo season 3 by answering one simple question: who f*cked up the most this week?) This week’s episode of Fargo begins with Emmit Stussy (Ewan McGregor) worrying about his appearance. By the end of “The Narrow Escape Problem,” how his hair looks is the least of his problems. In episode […]

Another one of our favorite shows is back this week, as the whole of Master of None’s Season 2 hits Netflix, and one of the most hopeful new series of the year, Amazon’s I Love Dick, makes its leap from pilot to full first season the same day. There’s also the end of the first season of Riverdale, more Fargo and Better Call Saul, a must-see installment of Saturday Night Live, reason to check out the new sitcom Great News, and why we’re paying attention to the MTV Movie Awards this year.

Ending the Bourne trilogy with a jolt, director Paul Greengrass delivers the most widespread installment yet with The Bourne Ultimatum. Picking up where The Bourne Supremacy left off, with Bourne bleeding in Moscow, the action then finds us visiting locales in France, England, Spain, Morocco and finally the U.S. This was easily the most challenging map of the three to make, primarily because I almost tried to map the entire sequence in London's Waterloo Station and because once the action moves to Tangier, Morocco it was nearly impossible to find any of the locations used as streets didn't seem to exist and there is no Google street view in the city. Nevertheless, I try to make as much sense of all the commotion as possible to the point I was even able to locate one of the slight turns Bourne makes in New York while being chased by Paz...

PC, Xbox 360
When tasked with choosing a particular horror game from the long and distinguished list, Condemned: Criminal Origins sticks out for a number of reasons. It was one of the best Xbox 360 launch titles, it had a nice CSI-style investigation system, and it let you smash tramps in the face with a brick. All good, valid grounds to recommend the game to others, and yet none of them come close to the one overarching element that everyone who played it will remember.
Mannequins.
Picture the scene: it’s dark, it’s late at night, and you’re creeping through an old abandoned shopping mall. Tip-toeing up escalators and through racks of dirty clothes. Most of the windows are broken and Christmas decorations lie scattered and left to rot. In your left hand you hold a torch, lighting your...
