Seven Hours After Violet, the new project from System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian, have announced their self-titled debut album, out October 11th via Sumerian Records. The band also dropped another single, “Radiance.”
From the band name down through the freshly unveiled album art, Seven Hours After Violet are clearly tapping into a 2000s nu-metal aesthetic, which also translates to the music. “Radiance” traverses both heavy and melodic territory, signaled by the shifts between clean and harsh singing. The subtle electronic sampling during the instrumental breaks is a particularly nu-metal move.
Seven Hours After Violet consist of Odadjian on bass, singer Taylor Barber (Left to Suffer), guitarist Morgoth, singer-guitarist Alejandro Aranda, and drummer Josh Johnson (Winds of Plague). The band made its debut back in June with the excellent harsher “Paradise,” a Heavy Song of the Week selection.
“This album is the culmination of years of creative exploration,” remarked Odadjian in a press release.

I wonder what exactly went behind conceiving a movie like The Abandon and then actually making it! If we only go by the idea of it, the sci-fi thriller, directed by Jason Sutterlund, can’t be termed bad, per se—even if it borrows from tons of other things, mainly from Cube (1997) and Buried (2010), both much superior films. But the issue here is that this one, despite having an interesting story, feels like a slog. Ninety-seven minutes feels like an eternity. There are only two things that can be blamed here: the writing is bland as hell, and lead actor Jonathan Rosenthal is no Jake Gyllenhaal, Tom Hardy, or even Ryan Reynolds; no offense. What’s even worse is that the payoff in the end is unsatisfying. I’m all for an ambiguous ending, but this one feels like nothing but a gimmick. However, I’m still going to make...

Three Point Capital has closed on a $100 million revolving credit facility with Mitsubishi Ufj Financial Group (Mufg). The independent film financier, which was acquired last year by Forest Road, has also rebranded as Tpc.
Forest Road is the majority owner of distributor Vertical Entertainment.
David Gendron, Tpc president and co-founder, said the new facility — which closed last month — will allow it to finance either partly or, more often now, entirely, about 60 films a year with budgets in the $1 million to $20 million range, with a “sweet spot” of $4-$5 million.
Tpc, which launched in 2009 and helped finance films including The Butler and Manchester By The Sea, is fully financing upcoming Abandoned, with Vertical, as well as Clerks III and Mel Gibson-starrer On The Line. It’s a financier of thriller Hello Stranger with Sam Worthington, Jordana Brewster, Robbie Amell and Alicia Sanz, currently in post-production.

For Netflix’s The Mitchells vs. the Machines, produced by Sony Pictures Animation, the idea of “Katie Vision” was bounced around for a bit, until production designer Lindsey Olivares got her hands on one of their animation tests. Director Mike Rianda said, “One weekend without telling anyone, she just stole some animation and drew on the screen and made it just with the crappy Photoshop she had on her computer. It was so exciting to see basically the super-expensive animated movie that some teenager had graffitied all over.”
The story of The Mitchells vs. the Machines is told from the perspective of Katie Mitchell, an aspiring film student. “Katie Vision” was used to give the film the aesthetic of an eager film student.

It’s a story line that’s been used in dozens of Western films. Two long-time friends who grew up together, later split up and take different paths—one follows the straight and narrow and becomes a lawman and the other turns into an outlaw. Fate decrees that one day they will have to meet in a showdown. It usually ends with the outlaw lying face down in the dirt and the sheriff sad and bitter about it all, wondering if it was all really worth it.
In 1973 two films with that plot were released within a month of each other. The office romance that led to CNN president Jeff Zucker’s abrupt resignation on Wednesday made for shocking headlines. But for media insiders and employees of the news network, the only surprise was that it had finally gone public, sources told Variety.
Zucker’s fondness for CNN chief marketing officer Allison Gollust had been common knowledge for years, insiders said. In a joint statement this morning, they both confirmed a consensual relationship and acknowledged their failure to flag the matter to CNN’s owner WarnerMedia. In his resignation statement, Zucker himself admitted that Gollust was his “closest colleague.”
Gollust is a seasoned public relations executive who in 2013 left a position in former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office to join Zucker at CNN. She now has the title of EVP and CMO of CNN Worldwide.
Prior to her stint in politics, Gollust spent more than a decade in communications at NBCUniversal with Zucker.

Jeff Zucker’s abrupt resignation on Wednesday as CNN’s president has put a spotlight on Allison Gollust, his longtime lieutenant and the network’s chief marketing officer.
Gollust, who had worked with Zucker for decades and rejoined CNN in 2013 as his “closest colleague,” has been identified as the woman with whom Zucker had a “consensual relationship” that he did not disclose to CNN owner AT&T in apparent violation of company policies.

It’s been 12 years since Will Forte has been a cast member of Saturday Night Live, but it only felt like yesterday as soon as he took the stage to host the show for the first time.
In the opening monologue, Forte’s gift for insecure-yet-bombastic characters was once again on display. He listed off some of the great cast members he worked with back in the day – Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, Jason Sudeikis, Fred Armisen. Then, he listed off his fellow cast members who hosted the show before him… and that would be that whole list plus Seth Meyers.

In the last decade, Japanese publisher Konami has largely moved away from Aaa video game publishing in order to focus its development arm on its much more profitable pachinko machines. It’s been an unfortunate pivot for fans of Konami’s games, to say the least, since the publisher happens to be sitting on some of the most highly-regarded gaming franchises of all-time. Among Konami’s biggest properties are Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, and Castlevania, most of which have spent years collecting dust in the publisher’s vaults except for the odd remastered collection or…themed pachinko machine. 2018’s Metal Gear Survive, a massive failure of a cash grab both critically and financially, was the last major Aaa game released by Konami not titled Pro Evolution Soccer, which has also been phased out in 2021.

How about we end the week with a very entertaining video game conspiracy theory? According to a group of gamer sleuths on Reddit and ResetEra forums, a recently announced indie game coming exclusively to the PS5 called Abandoned may secretly be a new Silent Hill game from none other than auteur Hideo Kojima.
The theory is gathering so much steam online that even Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, arguably gaming’s foremost investigative journalist, was almost 100% convinced the conspiracy was true at one point (although he’s no longer sure). There’s also a whole subreddit now dedicated to “The Blue Box Conspiracy,” where you can follow and post your latest finding in a strange sort of Arg.
So, what exactly is happening here? Rumors of a connection to a secret Silent Hill game and Hideo Kojima have followed Abandoned since it was first teased last April. The game is being...

Fresh off the long-awaited arrival of Zack Snyder’s Justice League (a.k.a. the fabled Snyder Cut), HBO Max has no need to appease fandom culture in April 2021. But the streaming service is gonna do it anyway!
The most notable new release for HBO Max this month is the HBO series The Nevers. This show, created by Joss Whedon, is set in a 19th century steampunk London and finds a sizable portion of the population (predominantly women) having been “Touched” by mysterious paranormal powers. There’s an interesting bit of irony at play here, as HBO Max is following up the Snyder Cut with a show created by his original Justice League replacement. Or at least there could have been an interesting bit of irony here, if Whedon had not bowed out from the show and been enthusiastically left out of the marketing material by HBO.

HBO Max has ordered a two-part documentary about the late actor Brittany Murphy, best known for voicing Luanne Platter in “King of the Hill” and for starring in films like “Clueless” and “8 Mile.” The documentary hails from Blumhouse Television and Pyramid Productions and aims to present a detailed portrait of Murphy’s life, career, and unexpected death amid mysterious circumstances in 2009 when she was only 32. The series, yet to be titled, will work to debunk conspiracy theories and go beyond the tabloid headlines, with new interviews with those closest to Murphy, along with never-before-seen archival footage.
The film is directed by Emmy nominee Cynthia Hill, best known for her 2014 documentary about domestic abuse, “Private Violence,” which premiered the same year in the U.S. Documentary Competition at the Sundance Film Festival. As was the case last year, Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards 2021 was a remote ceremony, boasting major talent, stellar musical performances and a whole lot of the network’s signature slime.
Hosted by Saturday Night Live cast member and Nickelodeon alum Keenan Thompson, the broadcast celebrating kids’ favorite TV shows, movies and games was notable, given the return of a number of winners from recent years.
Some of the night’s major awards went to Wonder Woman 1984 (Favorite Movie), Alexa & Katie (Favorite Kids TV Show), Stranger Things (Favorite Family TV Show) Robert Downey Jr. (Favorite Movie Actor) and Millie Bobbie Brown (Favorite Female TV Star, Favorite Movie Actress). While Stranger Things triumphed in the same category last year, Brown had previously claimed the award for Female TV Star.

New Delhi, Nov 19 (Ians) The Katie Holmes-starrer romantic drama, The Secret: Dare To Dream, has been scheduled for an India release on November 27.
The film directed by Hollywood veteran Andy Tennant tells the story of a hardworking young widow (played by Holmes), who is struggling to raise three children on her own, and how her life changes when she meets Bray Johnson (Josh Lucas).
The film is based on Rhonda Byrne's 2006 global bestselling self-help book. Celia Weston and Jerry O'Connell are also part of the Andy Tennant film, which earlier released internationally on digital platforms.
Before Holmes' latest film, Indian distributors and exhibitors have released a few other Hollywood films ever since the theatres opened post lockdown. These include the Robert De Niro-starrer, The War With Grandpa, and the Mel Gibson-starrer Force Of Nature.
The only Bollywood film to release post lockdown is Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari.

From Oprah to Ellen, daytime TV has found its own array of talk-show stars. But clearly the format isn’t for everyone.
Harry Connick Jr.‘s syndicated daytime talk show, “Harry,” was canceled by NBCUniversal Television Distribution in 2018 after only 2 seasons. It had aired on Fox-owned stations for a total of 299 episodes, though in the end, it failed to find its footing.
Jane Pauley was the widely admired cohost of “Today.” A natural fit for her own daytime show, right? Nope. “The Jane Pauley Show” premiered in 2004 and was canceled after just one season.
Everyone loves Tony Danza, right? Maybe not. The irrepressible former “Taxi” star premiered “The Tony Danza Show” in 2004. Audiences were apparently unimpressed by games like “Extravadanza!” and the show was yanked after two years.
“The Wayne Brady Show” arose out of his work on ABC’s primetime improv hit, “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” But...

Annecy 2020 Online kicked off its world-class French animation festival Monday with a pre-recorded video touting Sony Picture’s “Connected” (October 23), the latest tech savvy movie from “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller. However, Mike Rianda, who makes his directorial feature debut after guiding “Gravity Falls,” is the true creative force behind “Connected,” a very personal comedy about a family road trip that brings a combative father and daughter closer together when they fight a robot uprising.
“We wanted to make a movie where the artists…have a say and the best idea wins,” said Rianda, who was joined in the video by Guillermo Martinez (head of story) and Lindsey Olivares (production designer) after a brief introduction by Lord and Miller. (The video is available to all registered festivalgoers through June 30). After “Spider-Verse” took animation by storm and won the Oscar, Rianda was encouraged to pursue “new stories and fresh animation styles.

Today’s noir forecast is vice, kidnapping, murder, suicide, narcotics and a sleazy stolen baby racket! Kino’s third volume of Universal-International pix contains two seldom-screened quality urban noirs. Expect genuine dark themes in these sizable-budget location noirs filmed before Universal pulled most production back onto its one-size-fits-all backlot sets. Barbara Stanwyck dominates one show, while noir stalwarts Richard Conte and Dennis O’Keefe anchor the other two dramas, with dynamic showings by Coleen Gray, Edith Barrett, Peggy Dow, Jeanette Nolan, Meg Randall and especially Gale Storm.

Things have been pretty quiet on the movie front for a while, given the pandemic, but this weekend marks a major upswing in content for cinema lovers, with multiple brand new releases available. Judd Apatow’s The King of Staten Island is unfortunately not up for streaming at present, but Netflix Original Da 5 Bloods, the latest effort from the Oscar-winning Spike Lee, is. For family audiences, there’s also Artemis Fowl over on Disney Plus, which was originally set for a theatrical release back in May.
Even outside of these new films though, there’s plenty of fresh titles coming to the various streaming services this weekend, from classic movies, recent hits, new TV series, old TV series, etc. Whatever combination of services you’re subscribed to, you can fill your whole weekend watching what’s coming to Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon, HBO Max and the rest over the next few days.

As we continue to make our way into June, it’s shaping up to be a bit of a less eventful month for new Netflix releases than May was. But that certainly doesn’t mean viewers have been left wanting for fresh content to sink their teeth into. Far from it, in fact.
We’ve seen some great new additions to the platform over the past few days already and this coming week looks to continue the trend. Admittedly, there’s not quite as much standout material here as we got at the start of the month, but that’s to be expected as the first of any given month is usually the best day when it comes to new drops.
Nevertheless, there’s still a lot to get excited about over the coming days and here’s what’s on the way:

HBO Max launched on May 27th and has been off to a pretty good start with well over 10,000 hours worth of content on the service from day one. If you’re a horror fan, you may be excited to hear that a fairly decent portion of those 10,000 hours include some of the biggest and most popular horror films of all time. So, if you haven’t subscribed yet, now might just be the time to do so.
Do you like Steven Spielberg and massive sharks eating people? If so, you’ll be delighted to hear that you can catch the entire Jaws franchise – which spans four films – on HBO Max right away. It’s now been more than a decade since Jason Voorhees was last unleashed upon the moviegoing masses.
Back in 2009, director Marcus Nispel, along with screenwriters Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, delivered a fresh reboot of Friday the 13th, the age-old horror classic in which a masked serial killer stalks Camp Crystal Lake.
All in all, it was a pretty entertaining reimagining of the legendary tale, one which even convinced the Powers That Be to move ahead with a direct sequel – that is, until said sequel lost any sense of momentum, and was sentenced to life in development hell. Weeks became months, months became years, and Platinum Dunes and Paramount’s pic was ultimately canned in 2015. But had things panned out differently, it would’ve featured the “f*cking terrifying” Pamela Voorhees.
That’s according to Swift and Shannon, who posted the following piece of intel via Twitter:

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As per my Thursday update, M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Split ended up winning the weekend but with way more than anyone, including myself, predicted, with more than $40 million for its opening weekend. That’s pretty impressive, and his first movie to open at that level since 2010’s The Last Airbender. Meanwhile, Vin Diesel’s sequel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ended up making around where I predicted, taking second place with $20.1 million, not a great sign for the continuation of that franchise. Michael Keaton’s The Founder ended up right around where I predicted with $3.4 million, ending up just outside the Top 10. Hidden Figures, La La Land and Sing continued to do well with minimal drop-offs.

It’s kind of been a minute since we’ve heard from writer/director Stephen Gaghan. The filmmaker made his name as a screenwriter, rocketing into the scene in 2000 when he won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Steven Soderbergh’s “Traffic.” He directed a film shortly thereafter (2002’s “Abandon”), but it wasn’t until 2006’s “Syriana,” nominated for two Oscars, with a Best Supporting Actor win for George Clooney, that Gaghan broke out as a writer/director that everyone was clamoring to work with. Several projects ensued, but none came to fruition; 2006 remains the last time Gaghan directed a feature-length movie (though two TV movies did come in the interim). Is There More to this Coming-of-Age Parable Than Meets the Eye?
One of the key specificities about the production of Julie Lopes Curval’s latest exploration of female social development, High Society, is the fact that she utilized a team comprised almost entirely of women to influence the creative and technical contingents. It’s a decision that has pointed intentions in itself, suggesting a conscious decision to evade male influence and authority within the context of a story that’s ostensibly and subtle female coming-of-age parable. It also clarifies any ambiguity surrounding interpretation of a text that, while effective, doesn’t quite spell out its position on gender relations.
The plot, in itself, isn’t particularly revolutionary or original in any way. It’s like a humbler, less literal, version of Stephen Gaghan’s forgettable thriller, Abandon, in its positioning of a young, determined female protagonist—Alice (Ana Girardot)—in...
