Sachin: A Billion Dreams
Directed by James Erskine
Rating: **** ½(4 and a half stars)
There is something about Sachin Tendulkar, something so correct and so innocent you want him to win in life even when you know he is no more the ‘God’ of the cricket field.
The rousing farewell speech that Sachin gives at the end of this astutely emotional journey into the heart and mind of India’s most celebrated Bat Man left me dewy-eyed. This, when I know zilch about cricket and practically nothing about Sachin’s exploits on the field. What I do know—and what this film is able to tell us in comprehensive strokes of revelation—is that greatness is not thrust on the great by chance.
One has to break bones and crack ribs to get there.
Sachin A Billion Dreams is the story of a national hero who sails through every crisis...

There’s rich allegory and inventive use of sound in this tale of a goatherd’s adventures in the big city
Tibet, a country that finds itself at a crossroads between tradition and modernity, the rudimentary rural existence and the temptations of the city, is the subject as well as the backdrop of this strikingly beautiful fable. Tharlo, a goatherd, can still recite the huge indigestible chunks of Chairman Mao’s Little Red Book that he learned as a nine-year-old. A simple man, he is not sure of his own age and lives by the black-and-white moral code of a child. When he is sent to the city to get an ID card, a chain of events is set in motion.
The use of sound is particularly effective. In the city, Tharlo is buffeted by layers of noise; at home on the steppes, he listens to wispy fragments of folk songs on his radio,...

Outcast's slow, deliberate season one finale may not provide all the answers we've been waiting for, but it's no disappointment...
This review contains spoilers.
1.10 This Little Light
At first glance the season one finale of Robert Kirkman’s horror series Outcast may be viewed as a disappointment. On the one hand, no major questions are answered, the show’s protagonist appears to be running away from the story’s principal conflict leaving behind those who have helped him in the past and those who clearly need his intercession now, and we’re no closer to understanding what’s really going on than we were when the series began. However, that’s not the appropriate way to examine This Little Light, since it should be clear at this point that the writing team of Outcast has chosen to employ a slow, deliberate storytelling approach, and given the material,...

In the early hours of the morning, around 1.30 am. A few loose ends up were tied up first thing today. We were awaiting a few replies overnight.
You announced 90% of the official selection today. How many more films have you left to screen?
There are three or four films to put into competition and three or four films to put into Un Certain Regard. We’ve got 20 films - not to watch from scratch - but to re-watch, to work out how we could show them. We’re waiting for one last film to arrive.

The 68th Cannes Film Festival is now little under a month away, and Variety has the skinny on the event’s impressive line-up, which includes Carol and French comedy-drama La Tete Haute – itself set to open the festival on May 13 – not to mention the likes of Pixar’s emotional animation Inside Out and Mad Max: Fury Road screening out of competition.
For a full rundown of those candidates in question, you can consult the list down below. Due to take place from May 13 to May 25, it’s expected that more films will be added to the cinematic selection in the coming days, but already the billing is chock full of eye-catching releases. Interestingly, the aforementioned La Tete Haute will be the first festival opener since 1987 to be directed by a female filmmaker, in this case, Emmanuelle Bercot.

The 2015 Cannes Film Festival lineup was announced this morning and it's quite impressive as it includes several titles I'd be rushing to line up for, which makes my not going for the second year in a row all the more frustrating. Titles I'd be most excited to see including the new Jacques Audiard movie Dheepan, the new film from Yorgos Lanthimos The Lobster and Denis Villeneuve's Sicario. Matteo Garrone's The Tale of Tales is obviously an exciting title as are Macbeth starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, Carol from Todd Haynes and Youth from Paolo Sorrentino. Gus Van Sant will arrive on the Croisette with The Sea of Trees starring Matthew McConaughey, Pixar will arrive with Inside Out, Woody Allen's Irrational Man will screen and we already knew Mad Max: Fury Road would screen. I won't lie, seeing the lineup had me considering looking at the bank...

Ever so quiet from the film PRs this morning. Is there something going on that we should know about?
Yes, yes, of course….it’s that sacred event: Cannes lineup day!
Time to put to bed weeks of speculation about the chosen few and reveal which films have made it into the most prestigious film festival competition known to man.
You can follow the entries as they come in here or stick with me for some idle speculation and gossip punctuated with genuine near-insight.
[Cannes is currently showing a very jaunty and occasionally stirring promo video of the fest. Very ‘Euro’].
Onto business….
Most prediction stories kept it tight, only mentioning about 75 possible entries. Every auteur from here to Timbuktu seems to have been tipped for a slot…

With the world’s most prestigious film festival just around the corner, cineastes have been lasciviously salivating about what’s going to show up at Cannes, with wish lists appearing almost immediately after Berlin (a fest that had one of their most impressive line-ups ever) announced their awards. The remainder of the 2015 fest circuit looks to be a plentiful, diverse porridge, with many of the world’s most renowned auteurs’ sporting brand new titles. While many prognosticators will be sharing the same lists, more or less, hopes are incredibly high for a handful of sure bets, and a gaggle of hopefuls. The main competition always seems easier to postulate, though Thierry Fremaux always throws a few curves, (After the Battle in 2012, The Hunt in 2013 or last year’s Timbuktu, which won the Cesar for Best Picture recently, are a couple ready examples of under-the-radar titles).
Italy seems primed for saturation at the fest.

A Simple Man
Director: Stephane Brize // Writer: Stephane Brize
This will be the sixth film from director Stephane Brize, perhaps best known for his Cesar award winning 2009 film, Mademoiselle Chambon. Known for working class character studies, though his last feature, 2012’s Locarno premiered A Few Hours of Spring (see pic above) never received Us distribution. His latest, which will reunite Brize for the third time with Vincent Lindon, looks to be in a similar vein. While Brize’s profile has been slow to rise in the Us, he should be a name of note, recalling early works of Laurent Cantet or the Dardenne Bros. In A Simple Man, Lindon (pic above) plays Laurent, a man who starts a new job as a security guard and is asked to spy on his colleagues.
Cast: Vincent Lindon
Producers: Nord-Ouest Productions’ Christophe Rossugnon and Philip Boeffard (Les combattants)
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available.

The best villains are always the ones that you kind of root for no matter how dastardly they are, as they’re just too charismatic and/or funny to be ignored. The Iron Sheik is one such character. A perfect mixture of timing and personality made one man a household name, just not as Khosrow Vaziri.
The life of The Sheik is an interesting one, with many highs and painful lows, but naturally, he’s still more the sum of a simple character (or is that caricature) that he played in the wrestling ring. But does The Sheik sell us on that idea, and does it give us a reason to care beyond the mere celebrity of the man?
Fans of the golden age of the World Wrestling Federation, now World Wrestling Entertainment, will surely be drawn to this film, and understandably so. A number of big name wrestlers including Hulk Hogan,...

The Coen Brothers new films are always met with anticipation because you never know exactly what they are going to show you. From Blood Simple to Fargo to No Country For Old Men or A Simple Man, The Coens constantly reinvent themselves via genre and tone. Inside Llewyn Davis starts Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Garrett Hedlund, and Justin Timberlake...

Chicago – Cable networks often develop an identity, whether or not it’s through an intentional marketing strategy like “Characters Welcome” at USA or a network like Showtime building shows around TV actors and actresses who have previously found success in the form (Duchovny, Falco, Hall, Lewis, etc.). With the Sundance Channel’s premiere of the brilliant “Rectify” (now available on Netflix Instant, Btw) and tonight’s two-hour premiere of the riveting “Rectiffy,” what identity are they developing? Character-driven, deliberatly paced, genre pieces that transcend the cliches of their form to become something greater. “Rectify” is at once familiar and unlike anything else on TV right now. Yes, it’s great.

Daniel Holden (a beautifully understated Aden Young) has spent the majority of his life behind bars. In fact, his life was supposed to end there. He was on death row for a brutal murder in his small town before DNA evidence exonorated him.

A simple man, a tragic accident and Sam Rockwell – that’s what A Single Shot is all about! Ok, to be honest, David M. Rosenthal‘s upcoming movie has an awesome cast on board, the story sounds promising as well, but probably the best thing is that we finally have the first teaser trailer for this crime drama! Check it out & let us know what you think… As you probably know, the movie is actually an adaptation of Matthew Jones‘ novel of the same name, which revolves around a simple man named John Moon who, while stalking a deer out of season, accidentally shoots and...

Tom Ford, the Vanity Fair helming, Gucci saving, fashion designer, has delivered a fairly assured debut film. A Single Man, which looks just as sharp as Ford's tailoring, tells a 24 hour story held up by a central and almost career defying performance from none other than Mr Darcy himself, Colin Firth. Looking like Yves Saint Laurent and often sounding like a mid 70's era Micheal Caine, Firth's smart debonair literature professor George Falconer is still quietly grieving the death of Jim (a very confident Mathew Goode), his lover of 16 years and trying to hide from the world in a designer wood and glass house within the normality and vicinity of 1960's suburbia. The house also comes complete with Aldous Huxley books, a maid and a stark homosexual repression subtext. The film unfolds slowly and beautifully. Falconer wakes and readies himself for the day, watches (and perhaps secretly in some way,...

El Guapo's Top Ten Movies Of 2009! Now that the year has come to a close, let's take a look at what I thought were the best movies of 2009. And believe it or not, 2009 had a lot of great movies. From giant robot movies to tender love stories to comedies that had you laughing until you got a hernia, 2009 was one of the better years in cinema.Granted, I have not seen every movie that came out this year. I missed Up in the Air, Anti-Christ, A Simple Man and the Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel. So don't get all bent out of shape when you don't see those films on my list. Like last year's list I'm sure there will be some choices on here that will have you scratching...
