very good

about a year and a half ago my dad told me about The French Doors. i thought it sounded interesting enough but i didn't try to find it anywhere. Then about a year ago i remembered that film and thought "hey why not" and tried finding it on the internet. eventually after about a week of looking i found it on atom films. i called my dad over to the computer and said to him" hey dad I've found that creepy film you told me about ages ago!" He smiled at me, turned round turned off the lights so it was pitch black apart from the computer screen and told me to watch it. I started off fine...Then when he started getting worried about whatever was there i found it very unnerving. at the end i pushed back my chair and stood up...it made me jump!:P if you haven't seen this film i highly recommend you do because it is well worth it. even after the fourth or fifth time its still unsettling.

GREAT FILM!

Maybe I Expected Too Much

It was a fellow board member of this site who told me about this Kiwi short and taking his advice I watched it . Normally I wouldn`t have bothered my behind to set the video because I have very little interest in short films but I`d heard positive things about THE FRENCH DOORS . Alas I was slightly disappointed by it , it`s by no means bad in anyway but it suffers from the fault of a great number of short films and that is there`s little explanation . It`s similar in feel to a Clive Barker short story where style takes precedence over content but again Barker is a writer who leaves the reader wondering what it all meant and I`m left wondering what THE FRENCH DOORS was all about . Of course if you live on your own in a big house out in the country in the middle of nowhere you might just find this film terrifying , and I do admit I jumped out of my seat at the ending but some stories are too enigmatic for their own good and THE FRENCH DOORS is one such story

Heart-jumpingly scary

This short film managed to do what no other horror film has done since I was a child and actually genuinely frightened me out of my seat.

The structure of the film is such that the mundane, almost long-winded build up lulls the viewer into a false sense of security so that when the pay-off comes it really bangs you over the head.

In some ways, this is a film that you can't really recommend to anyone by saying what a good scare it is because it seems to work best when sprung on the viewer as a complete surprise. Of course, this makes it difficult to know how to suggest it to anyone else. What it really needs is to be "discovered" by the viewer, late at night when he/she is just idly watching whatever is on. Perhaps that's the level on which it works best.

None of this is to run down the film at all which I maintain is excellent, and it would be nice to see the obvious talents of those involved being expanded. It just seems that the very act of being told about it lessens the impact of seeing it, which is a problem when you're trying to get people interested in it...

scary, thrilling, well done

I spied this short on a DVD of best new Zealand shorts, all great but The french Doors was amazing. It starts off slow and you wonder if there is anything going to happen. Just as you relax into the hum drum of home renovation, the most spookiest thing happens.

EEEEkkk, I wanted to stop watching, but I was glued.

The films dips into the primal fear of the dark and with little, if not any, special effects. It chills you right to the bone. A simple yet brilliant concept opened up all those memories of when I was young and dream't up the most improbably but spooky situations.

The film makers visual style are bang on and the lead character takes you convincingly through the story. It is a quality short that I haven't seen in quite some time.

The French Doors has all the hallmarks of a great feature, alas it finishes after ten minutes or so. Never the less a great ending that begs you to want to know more.

Loved it and well done and thanks for the ride. These New Zealanders are really turning out the talent.

A new fan.

Tremendously scary little short, very much in the vein of Silent Hill. Elegantly told, and absolutely terrifying. Kudos to all concerned, especially handsome vest bloke. Damn, I've let myself down again. Anyway, this is my favorite film short ever.

Creepy and scary - jumped straight into my 5 favourite shorts

A young New Zealander has bought a rural home and is fixing it up. He takes delivery of an old set of French doors and easily fits them in his home. He awakens in the morning to a beautiful sunny day, however the room with the French doors is dark and outside is pitch black. When he goes into his kitchen and looks out he only sees daylight but outside viewed through his doors is pitch black. He ventures outside with a lamp to find the meaning of this dark view.

Simple idea wonderfully done. What can I say about this without taking away from it's shock and it's sheer sense of unease. The plot is as simple as I've described above and it's over far too quickly. The idea is wonderful and the direction created such unease within me that the actual pay off was both scary and very unnerving.

The cast are good as I totally bought the guy as a normal guy and not an actor acting scared. My only complaint is `would he really have gone out those doors'? man - I would have rung all my friends to come over and would have stayed outside in the light till they were all there!

I can't say no more about this as it's strength is you being unsure where it's going. However even when you've seen it twice or so, the air of creepiness is still worth experiencing again.

Took me by surprise

Warning: Spoilers
I had no idea what this short film was when I first watched it. I was idly flicking through channels late at night, and stumbled across this when it was starting (back when Channel 4 showed short films and disturbing animation in the early hours).

I had no idea what to make of it at first - the first couple of minutes are spent watching the titular doors being constructed, then (as I remember) the protagonist goes to sleep, and wakes in the morning to find that, when looking through the doors, the outside world is under cover of darkness. When he looks through other windows in the house it is daytime. Right then my attention perked straight up. Very unusual, rather unsettling. When the protagonist actually does the logical thing - so rare in horror films - and throws an object out of the window to land in front of the doors, I was smiling. This was cool. He then goes out the doors, and finds that it is indeed dark outside. After a few minutes nervously poking around, clutching desperately to the wall of the darkened house, a rustle of movement draws him back indoors, and BANG, shock, Le Fin. I won't completely spoil the ending here, because it is the entire point of the film, but I will say I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it.

I haven't rated the film, because to be honest I don't remember much about it other than the creeping buildup and shock pay off. It came, it scared seven shades of crap out of me, and it was gone again. I watched the film under ideal conditions for it to do its job effectively - taken by surprise and not at my most alert.

Recommended.
