Part of the fun in rounding up recent books about (or connected to) cinema is the sheer diversity of releases. This latest collection features a dive into this history of Hollywood legends, lots more Force Awakens, compelling reads from two fascinating critics, texts highlighting the art of Batman v. Superman and The Little Prince, and more. Plus, if you’ve been coveting Constable Zuvio mentions, you’re finally in luck.
Movie Freak: My Life Watching Movies by Owen Gleiberman (Hachette Books)
My favorite book of 2016 thus far has arrived, and it’s Movie Freak by former Entertainment Weekly critic Owen Gleiberman. For many a nineties teen, EW was something of a pop culture bible, and Gleiberman’s incisive writing was a key reason. In Movie Freak, his unguardedly personal memoir, he talks of films loved (Blue Velvet, Manhunter), friendships dashed (with the likes of Oliver Stone and Pauline Kael), and...

The story of The Huntsman: Winter’s War is an interesting one, but it never quite comes together. That’s true whether you’re talking about the non-existent fairy tale behind the film’s plot, or the Hollywood shuffling behind the film’s creation (which I won’t go into).
The film covers a span of time that surrounds the first film, but doesn’t seem to quite account for it sensibly, and follows the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) from early childhood, and Ravenna’s sister, Freya (Emily Blunt), before even that.
We enter the film as Freya, living in the shadow of her powerful sister, is betrayed by her lover, which sparks her own magical power. She heads north to conquer her own lands as the Ice Queen. With her own spin on “raising” an army, she kidnaps children to train to become her elite forces. Enter Eric, the Huntsman,...

Thomas meets the pirates, with added celebrity casting, in this reliably well-pitched diversion for the start of the summer holidays
Despite its cumbersome title, this latest Thomas the Tank Engine special sees a significant expansion in ambition for the amiable set of chuffers: with Eddie Redmayne and John Hurt on board, as well as Olivia Colman back for another go as neurotic steam-shovel Marion, we are firmly in the realm of celebrity casting. Not that it makes much difference to the actual content of the film, which remains reliably well-pitched at little ’uns and their slightly older siblings. Like Tale of the Brave, Lost Treasure jams locomotive action together with a pop motif supposedly beloved of kids: Brave had dinosaurs, Treasure has pirates. In short, a sinister-looking sailor is riding Sodor’s rails looking for a missing chest of loot. Shenanigans ensue. Not an all-time classic, but an efficient diversion...

Disney is taking its live-action Beauty and the Beast into full Ya territory. Two sources confirm to EW that the author/screenwriter/director of indie teen bible Perks of Being a Wallflower Stephen Chbosky will step aboard to script a new draft of Beauty, adapted from its 1991 animated form to an updated live-action version. The news follows the June announcement that Bill Condon, who most recently directed Twilight's final two chapters, would helm the new version that will include music from the iconic animated feature as well as Disney's long-running Broadway musical. The original draft was written by Evan Spiliotopoulos (Hercules,...

Maleficent wasn.t a game-changer. It was, instead, the latest in what is now becoming the status quo: Live-action takes on one-time animated classics that will attempt to appeal to a familiar audience base by telling them a timeless story using a different medium. And now we know which animated classic is going to get reworked. Bill Condon, the Oscar-winning director of Gods and Monsters, Kinsey, Dreamgirls and . yes . two Twilight movies, will take a swing at a live-action Beauty and the Beast for Disney. Variety reports that screenwriter Evan Spiliotopoulos has been tapped to write the script, after tackling scripts for such in-house animated sequels like Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure, The Jungle Book 2, Pooh.s Heffalump Movie and The Lion King 1 1/2. And HitFix added that Condon will be drawing not only from the Oscar-winning 1991 animated film, but also from the smash Broadway musical that ran for 13 years,...

Update: Ouija is back from the dead. Michael Bay is still producing and the first actor was cast today. In the story, a gruop of teens try to contact their dead friend with a Ouija board but contact a very, very evil spirit. "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" star Daren Kagasoff will play Trevor, who doesn't think trying to connect with the dead friend's spirit is a good idea. Juliet Snowden and Stiles White wrote and will co-direct, they co-wrote The Possession and the Nicolas Cage movie Knowing.

Fandango reports that he already took it to Paramount (where he's made over $1 billion this year alone with Transformers 3) and they said no. In this case, we can safely assume that it supersucks because Paramount definitely owes Bay one. Universal's original multipicture deal...

Earlier this year, Disney released their lackluster spin-off Planes, set in the same world as their Cars franchise, one of the biggest parts of the House of Mouse's merchandising to young boys. Something felt off about all of the trailers, and the film wasn't really a runaway hit (after all, Pixar wasn't really behind the film), but now we know why. It just needed to be a little more gritty. The production company Cinesaurus has a YouTube channel called Gritty Reboots where they take popular video games, TV shows, comics and more and turn them into gritty, cinematic trailers. And that's how we get Disney's Warplanes. Watch now! Here's the faux trailer for Disney's Warplanes from Gritty Reboots (via SlashFilm): Planes is directed by Klay Hall ("King of the Hill," Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure) and follows Dusty (Dane Cook), a small town crop dusting plane who longs...

Yes, a whole slew of families are going to hit the theater when this animated spin-off arrives, but no, that doesn't mean it's worth it. Without the help of Pixar Animation, Disney is taking us to the sky with Planes, set in the world of Cars. Other than that, this film has nothing in common with the quality we've come to expect from Pixar, even in their less impressive Cars 2. In this new trailer Dane Cook's voice still seems completely out of place as Dusty, and the rest of the characters just seem like caricatures with nothing but lame jokes. The gorgeous visuals are the only redeeming aspect of this film and that's not enough. Watch? Here's the new trailer for Disney Animation's Planes, direct from Disney: Planes is directed by Klay Hall ("King of the Hill," Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure) and follows Dusty (Dane Cook), a...

For audiences who think that the Cars franchise might be the weakest work from Pixar Animation, this new trailer for Disney's spin-off Planes (which doesn't have the aforementioned animation house behind it) is a little hard to watch. Sure, there's some stunning animation and the flying sequences are going to look amazing on the big screen in 3D, but the writing is just stale and the humor is flat. Dane Cook does not have the right voice for the lead character Dusty, and this feels like nothing but a cash grab. We were hoping this could turn out to be something special, but this trailer has no heart. We hope the movie is much better. Here's the full theatrical trailer for Disney Animation's Planes, originally from Moviefone: Planes is directed by Klay Hall ("King of the Hill," Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure) and follows Dusty (Dane Cook), a small town...

It's not exactly a trailer, but Disney just release this gorgeous new promo for their Cars spin-off Planes (which was not created with Pixar Animation), that has some truly stunning animated landscapes and scenery. Using a lot of the flying sequences from the film (of which there are many when the main characters are actually airplanes), the promo uses a very uplifting score by the film's composer, Mark Mancina (Training Day, August Rush). The promo really makes it feel like the film has some heart, but the sneak peek with all the dialogue still has me a little leery. Maybe Disney can pull this one off without Pixar? Here's the sneak preview trailer for Disney's Planes, via Disney Movie Trailers: Planes is directed by Klay Hall ("King of the Hill," Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure) and follows Dusty (Dane Cook), a small town crop dusting plane who longs to enter...

With Dane Cook voicing the lead in Disney's animated Cars spin-off Planes (without the help of Pixar), and a supporting cast that includes Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Teri Hatcher, Brad Garrett, John Cleese and more, it's time for the first official footage from the film to be unveiled. We've seen the teaser that hit home video when the film was meant only for a Blu-Ray/DVD release, but now that the film is slated for an August theatrical run, there's a trailer in AMC Theaters that plays more like a sneak preview clip with Dusty (Cook) racing jets Bravo and Echo (Kilmer & Edwards). Even if this doesn't feel like a home run, the animation will at least look really good in 3D. Watch below! Here's the sneak preview trailer for Disney's Planes, via Disney Movie Trailers: Planes is directed by Klay Hall ("King of the Hill," Tinkerbell and...

Pixar have created some incredible films that are sure to enjoy a longevity afforded to very few animated films (only partner company Disney have really enjoyed a ‘timeless’ popularity for most of their films). Revolutionising animation processes, Pixar’s films are both groundbreaking and visually stunning – each improving upon the last.
However, what keeps us coming back for more is their ability to create engaging and unforgettable narratives to merge with their impressive techniques. There isn’t a Pixar film that hasn’t impressed both audiences and critics (even the less glorified Cars has its legions of dedicated fans and if anything, the tie-in merchandise and the soon to be released sequel attest to it being popular with viewers somewhere). The reason we all love the studio so much is that their stories are accessible to child and adult alike and each of their films has at least one moment...

As someone who falls outside of the target demographic for this title, I took it upon myself to ask my six-year-old daughter if she would like to help with this review. She's a big fan of all things princess and Tinker Bell, and it's been with baited breath that she's awaited another of these releases, having watched the first two. But will her interest wain in Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue? After all, the last one Disney released, Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, seemed to be better received than the first.

Grades: The Lost Treasure Of Atlantis: B; The Trail To Doomsday: C- When MacGyver went off the air in 1992 at the end of its seventh season, the show hadn’t fallen off dramatically in the ratings, yet all concerned—the creators, the actors, the network—felt that the concept of an exceptionally handy secret agent had run its course, creatively and culturally. (When a show becomes a shorthand joke on The Simpsons, the writing is on the wall.) Still, the clamor for more MacGyver in foreign markets brought the show back for two TV movies in 1994: Lost Treasure ...

Actor Stephen Baldwin has been booted off British reality TV show "Celebrity Big Brother". The "Usual Suspects" star lost a public vote after lining up against Donald Trump's ex-wife Ivana Trump and rapper Sisqo on Friday night, January 22. Sisqo was evicted shortly after.
Speaking after leaving the house, born-again Christian Baldwin said, "I learned a lot about myself, I learned a lot about my faith through interacting with these people." Stars still on the show include Trump, actor Vinnie Jones and actress Stephanie Beacham.
His elimination aside, Stephen Baldwin began his career as an opera singer when he was just attending high school. His first big screen project is 1989 movie "The Young Riders". He went to appear in several films such as "Fred Claus", "Silent Warnings" and "Lost Treasure".

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. I, of course, pick Disney/Pixar's "Up." I saw the film again in Blu-ray and I cried and laughed again, and again, and again.
So according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences rules, there must be at least 16 eligible films in a year to expand to five nominations. Did you know that if there are fewer than eight eligible films, the category disappears?
No need to worry about the Best Animated Feature category to vanish this year. 20 films were submitted for consideration! And they are:
* .Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.
* .Astro Boy.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment's "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" debuted at No. 1 on both the national home video sales and rental charts for the week ending Nov. 1.
The DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of the third installment in the animated family franchise, which grossed just under $200 million in U.S. theaters, was heavily promoted by the studio. Launch events included a media day for "mommy bloggers" and the unveiling of a giant ice sculpture of Scrat, one of the film's most prominent characters.
"Ice Age" generated 11% of its first-week sales from the Blu-ray Disc edition. That's a surprisingly high percentage for a family film, but actual unit sales weren't enough to dislodge Paramount/DreamWorks' "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" from the No. 1 spot on the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc chart. In its second week in stores, "Transformers" generated 24% of its total sales from the Blu-ray Disc edition.
"Transformers" slipped to No.

I’ll watch essentially anything The Mouse House churns out, within reason. Most of their live-action catalogue can be done without, but at the end of the day the Disney is that childhood friend you ultimately can’t turn your back to. I’ll even suffer through some Disney Channel schlock because my old friend and I go way, way back. For this reason, and because I’m in love with Disneyland, is why I chose to sit through Tinker Bell And The Lost Treasure. Quite honestly, I’d almost say I’m glad I did as the direct-to-dvd/Blu-ray movie turned out much better than expected.
The main reason this Tinker Bell adventure isn’t terrible is due in large part to the effort that’s on display. The writing isn’t particularly sharp, but the writers have turned in something that actually expands the mythology of Tink and Pixie Hollow.

It's difficult to appreciate, or even accurately evaluate, a family film made about 40 years ago, especially when modern studios have made such sweeping advancements in the genre. Family movies can be good when they manage to do something innovative, when they transcend generations, appealing to both children and parents alike without pandering and without sacrificing quality by assuming their audience is made up of idiots, as countless kids' films are wont to do. The problem with Bedknobs and Broomsticks is that as it stands today, it doesn't really work for any audience, even when you do avoid juxtaposing it with the superior films of today.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks concerns an "apprentice witch" named Miss Price (Angela Lansbury) who is forced by government order to take in three kids. Orphaned kids, natch. Miss Price is at first cold and demanding towards the children, but they get the chance to retaliate when...

The video, moreover, also features several scenes from upcoming direct-to-dvd movie "Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure", for which the tune serves as its soundtrack.
Beside serving as the theme song for the film, "Gift of a Friend" becomes a bonus track in Demi's second studio album entitled "Here We Go Again". The music video for the tune itself will be included in the film's DVD bonus feature.
As for "Lost Treasure", it is the latest installment of "Tinker Bell" movie franchise. The animation flick will follow Tinker Bell, who goes on a journey far North of Never Land to patch things up with her friend Terence and restore a Pixie Dust Tree. If director Sam Raimi’s classic Western “The Quick & the Dead” can be said to have an analogue in the video game world, it is unquestionably Techland’s “Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood.” They both serve up cheeseball stories and feature colorfully one-dimensional characters. Game and film alike also offer a helluva fun ride, building a deeply entertaining experience around the established tropes of the Western genre.
“Bound in Blood” is all the more impressive for being a sequel that completely eclipses its predecessor. The original “Call of Juarez” had its high points, but any fun was marred by a slavish adherence to Techland’s shooter/platformer/stealth vision for the game. “Blood” abandons the latter two gameplay styles, focusing instead on tightening up the core experience of forging a trail across the Wild West with your guns blazing.

I'm a bit confused by Return from Witch Mountain. In the original, there's a pretty solid theme of self-discovery (which is admittedly thrown away by the ending, but it's there). Further still, Escape to Witch Mountain set up the perfect premise for a sequel in the final five minutes. When Tia and Tony's Uncle Bene (Denver Pyle) says there are many more alien children out there waiting to find their way back to their kind, Disney essentially established a goldmine for countless sequels of the twins helping other children like themselves get home. As soon as I heard the uncle say that line I thought to myself ‘wow, that's actually a pretty smart sequel premise - well played Disney.' Now you listen here, Return to Witch Mountain will have none of that spoon-fed sequel crap - oh no - instead they...

Chicago – The Round-Up, HollywoodChicago.com’s famous recurring column about lesser Blu-Ray and DVD titles that may have slipped through your fingers at the store recently, is in clean-up mode this week. With a DVD collection for a famous young actress, an old cartoon, a straight-to-video horror movie, and three movies with the word “Mountain” in the title, the only word that comes to mind to tie these titles together is “random”.
You know those bins of “impulse buy” items you’ll see in stores near the cash register? Stuff that you may not have put on your shopping list and that you may not even know you want until you see them? That’s what this week’s Round-Up column is like. The covers for several assorted DVDs we’ve told you about over the past few weeks have recently cropped up, and we figured we’d show them to you all in one place (i.e., below the cut). A new title has come up as well: Lost Treasure Of The Grand Canyon, a Sci Fi Channel creature feature that Anchor Bay releases May 26.
In that movie, Shannen Doherty and Michael Shanks star as two of a group of archaeological researchers who travel deep into the titular natural landmark in search of the father of Doherty’s character. There they encounter not only an ancient tribe that likes to dabble in human sacrifice, but a mythical monster that also enjoys snacking on people. With no special features announced, the disc retails for $19.97.

Rag on Sci-Fi Channel original movies all you want - I know I often do; but somebody (besides me) must be tuning in given how much they keep on cranking them out. As a matter of fact, the ratings for these films are steadily increasing. Sci-Fi plans for 36 news films in 2009, and today we're getting a taste of things to come.
The Hollywood Reporter put out a story about the ongoing working arrangement among the Sci-Fi Channel, distribution company Rhi Entertainment, and production company Muse Entertainment. The three newest monster fruits of their creative loins are:
