Legendary Canadian actor Donald Sutherland, who died on Thursday after a long illness and a celebrated Hollywood film and TV career, revealed why he never sought dual Canadian and U.S. citizenship by acquiring an American passport.
“Because we don’t have the same sense of humor. It’s true. We don’t. I’m a Canadian through and through,” Sutherland told the CBC radio show Q with Tom Power in March during one of his last media interviews.
Sutherland, who had been living in recent years in Quebec, around 12 miles from the U.S. border, recalled giving that answer to an American border guard who asked why the Canadian actor, who already had a green card to work stateside, didn’t get an American passport to more quickly cross the border to complete errands.

We're very sad to report that Donald Sutherland has passed away at the age of 88 after a long illness.
Sutherland appeared in countless movies and TV shows over the course of his six-decade career, taking on a wide range of roles. Early standouts include Pvt. Vernon Pinkley in The Dirty Dozen (1967), Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce in M*A*S*H (1970), hippie tank commander Sgt. Oddball in Kelly’s Heroes (1970), and the titular private eye in Alan J. Pakula’s Klute (1971).
Though he often played heroic characters, Sutherland also brought life to his share of villains, including a ruthless Nazi spy in Eye of the Needle (1981), and President Snow in the Hunger Games movies. He is also known for his devastating turn as a grieving father in Nicholas Roeg's sinister horror/thriller Don't Look Now (1973), which featured an infamously graphic (for its time) sex scene with Julie Christie.
The prolific actor's résumé also includes:...

Actor Salma Hayek is used to doing love scenes in movies. But her nude scenes in the film Ask the Dust were particularly grueling because of the conditions she was put in. Fortunately, Hayek had her co-star Colin Farrell to offer support during the uncomfortable take.
Salma Hayek was once really upset about having to do her love scenes in the film ‘Ask the Dust’ Salma Hayek | Mike Coppola/Getty Images
Hayek and Farrell once starred in the 2006 feature Ask the Dust. The movie was set in the 1930s, and was a pure romantic drama about a writer who slowly falls for a waitress. The film would include a love scene between the two performers, but the scene in question was less than ideal.
Although the actors got along well enough, the intimacy between them was anything but warm. This was because Farrell and Hayek had to perform in a make-believe ocean with low temperatures.

Rare is the movie about writer’s block that doesn’t end with the frustrated author scrapping his dead-end drafts in order to “write what you know” — i.e., the film we’ve just sat through. More uncommon still is the dog movie that doesn’t rely on its canine lead to warm hearts, jerk tears or teach its owner important lessons about his humanity. So let’s start by giving the French midlife-crisis drama “My Dog Stupid” credit for doing something different with the trite conventions of the two feel-good categories to which it belongs.
Writer-director Yvan Attal has made three films with real-life wife Charlotte Gainsbourg — “My Wife Is an Actress,” “Happily Ever After” and now this — and with each movie, he sands away still more of the mystique that surrounds celebrity couples. It was only a matter of time before the prequel machine eventually roped in “Chinatown,” but in a surprise move, the 1974 film will inspire a new Netflix series — not another movie. David Fincher and original “Chinatown” writer Robert Towne are set to produce.
Deadline first reported that, 45 years after the film became one of the hallmarks of American cinema, this pilot script aims to tell the story of a younger Jake Gittes as he adjusts to life as a private investigator in an expanding Los Angeles community. Fincher isn’t confirmed to direct the pilot, but the possibility remains. Fincher and Towne are executive producers on the project, along with Josh Donen, who previously worked on other Fincher-led Netflix projects like “House of Cards” and “Mindhunter.”
Fincher’s next major Netflix collaboration is “Mank,” the upcoming biopic of another legendary Hollywood writer: “Citizen Kane” scribe Herman Mankiewicz. The film, starring Gary Oldman,...

Witness the rise of the man who changed America. Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) is Thurgood Marshall.
Also starring Josh Gad, Kate Hudson, Dan Stevens, Sterling K. Brown and James Cromwell, watch the exciting trailer now.
Such an dynamic trailer – with a fall season release date, expect to see awards buzz for such a powerful film. Acting, directing, writing, producing categories, including the technical categories for cinematography, costumes, hair and makeup, and production design, with score and song to round out the possible nominations.
Long before he sat on the United States Supreme Court or claimed victory in Brown v. Board of Education, Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) was a young rabble-rousing attorney for the NAACP. The new motion picture, Marshall, is the true story of his greatest challenge in those early days – a fight he fought alongside attorney Sam Friedman (Josh Gad), a young lawyer with no experience in criminal law: the case of black chauffeur Joseph Spell (Sterling K. Brown), accused by his white employer, Eleanor Strubing (Kate Hudson), of sexual assault and attempted murder.
The film has a top notch production team.
Directed by Reginald Hudlin, Marshall is produced by Paula Wagner, Jonathan Sanger ( The Elephant Man, Vanilla Sky, Flight Of The Navigator), and Reginald Hudlin. It is written by Jake Koskoff and Michael Koskoff.
Hudlin co-produced the 88th Academy Awards ceremony in 2016 and was one of the producers of Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture for the film.
Paula Wagner launched Cruise/Wagner Productions (C/W) with her former CAA client Tom Cruise. C/W went on to produce such critically acclaimed films as The Others, The Last Samurai, Vanilla Sky, Without Limits, Shattered Glass, Narc, Elizabethtown, and Ask the Dust, as well as Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds (which Wagner executive produced). C/W was responsible for the original Mission: Impossible film trilogy (Mission: Impossible 2 and Mission: Impossible III).
Open Road Films will release Marshall on October 13, 2017. Mark it on your calendar now.

A extensive look at all those movies James Franco directed.
James Franco has done a lot of things, we’ve heard. Following a successful turn on Judd Apatow’s Freaks and Geeks and a well-received starring spot on a TNT biopic on James Dean, he turned immediately to a litany of pursuits: from playwriting and English degrees to painting and directing no less than ten feature-lengths. The latter project interested me. Were they any good? In Franco’s Rolling Stone profile last year, Jonah Weiner ran around a thesaurus of words like “dizzying,” “indefatigable“ and, wait for it, “multihyphenate” to describe his subject but none of those words mean very much. Paul Klee painted over a thousand paintings in the penultimate last year of his life. So could I. So what?
“What did we do to deserve James Franco?,” asked Rex Reed in a slightly different era. Back then, even the The Guardian agreed with Jared Kushner...

Author Dan Fante, who boozed, scrapped and wrote his way out of the considerable shadow cast by his father and fellow novelist John Fante, died Saturday. He was 71. Fante was born and died in Los Angeles, and he painted colorful prose portraits of life on the hustle in the city. Several of his books and plays, including the novel “Chump Change” and “Short Dog/Cab Driver Stories From the L.A. Streets,” drew on his experiences as a telemarketer, taxi driver, private investigator, salesman and Santa Monica Pier carnival barker. His famous father did the same thing in his books including “Ask the Dust,...

Screenwriter John Ridley joined family members of nineteenth-century author Solomon Northup to receive the 26th-annual USC Libraries Scripter Award for “12 Years a Slave.” Selection committee co-chair Howard Rodman announced the winners at the black-tie event on Saturday, Feb. 8, at USC’s Doheny Memorial Library.
“Until I read Solomon’s memoir, I didn’t know what being a writer was all about,” Ridley said in his acceptance speech. “The way that Solomon wrote, the clarity with which he wrote, and more importantly, the strength of his character, what he went through without bitterness, without hate—that really taught me something.”
“12 Years a Slave’s” Scripter win adds to the growing number of awards for the Fox Searchlight film, including best motion picture in the drama category at last month’s Golden Globes. The film is nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Colin Farrell has revealed on the Ellen DeGeneres talkshow that he had a "romantic relationship" with Elizabeth Taylor in the final years of her life.
Farrell met Taylor when his son was being born, when she was being treated in the same hospital. After bumping into her manager, he asked for his regards to be passed on, and later asked his publicist to send her some flowers – only to find that Taylor had just sent him some orchids.

An Aardman Production For Sony Pictures Animation Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Brian Blessed, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen Also On Board
Culver City, Calif. – Hugh Grant will voice the lead role alongside an all-star cast in The Pirates! The film, which will be distributed by Columbia Pictures, will be released March 30, 2012 in North America.

Another interesting life, and another interesting biopic. So, why not a good movie then?
With some great team it’s definitely possible, so no wonder producers Mark Joseph (Ray), Ralph Winter (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), and Jonas McCord (Ask the Dust) have begun work on a biopic of Ronald Reagan!
The film will be called Reagan and it will center on the former actor and 40th president of the United States of America.
The material used will mostly come from two best-selling biographies by Paul Kengor: The Crusader and God and Ronald Reagan.
The film will track the entire life of Reagan rom childhood through the presidency.
At this moment we also know that the movie has a 30 million budget and will begin with the 1981 assassination attempt and tells Reagan’s story through flashbacks and flash-forwards.
And yes, that means the project will not be a hit piece either like the...

I knew Curtis well in his final years, as did writer-producer Dennis Bartok, the former head programmer of L.A.’s famed American Cinematheque.
Dennis Bartok: I think the most interesting aspect of Curtis’s career is that he was really the only filmmaker to successfully transition from the avant-garde scene of the late 1940’s to directing Hollywood feature films. In all the excitement over all the other year- and decade-end lists, we almost overlooked Mr. Skin's ever-popular ranking of the best nude scenes bestowed upon us in 2009.
Previous winners have included Salma Hayek in 2006 ("Ask the Dust"), Marisa Tomei in 2007 ("Before the Devil Knows You're Dead") and Mischa Barton ("Closing the Ring") and Lizzy Caplan ("True Blood") in 2008 for their film and television work, respectively.
This year, the list has been combined once again and shortened to a mere Top 10. At the top of list, Susan Sarandon's daughter Eva Amurri for her turn as a college student/stripper on Showtime's "Californication," beating out Jessica Biel's feature film turn in "Powder Blue."
Two other TV performances were noted, Anna Paquin for HBO's "True Blood" (her second time to appear on the list) as well as Alanna Ubach on HBO's "Hung."
Not surprisingly, you still have to head to...

Colin Farrell has admitted he danced naked for Salma Hayek to cure her nerves. The pair had to film an awkward nude scene while making 2006 film Ask The Dust, in which they played lovers. Colin Farrell stripped naked and danced for Hollywood beauty Salma Hayek on the set of their movie Ask The Dust - so she wouldn't be nervous about posing nude on screen.
Hayek had to peel off for scenes in the 2006 movie, in which they played lovers.
Gossips claimed the pair was romantically linked at the time, adding that Farrell had performed a naked ballet dance for the sexy star.
And the Irish actor admits the rumours are almost all true.
He says, "The naked part is true, but it wasn't ballet; it was a different dance.
"And I wasn't dating her - we were working together. We were doing a scene where she had to be naked, so I thought, 'I want to be naked.'"...

Actor Colin Farrell has been left red-faced after 70-year-old actress Dame Eileen Atkins boasted she recently rejected his desperate requests for casual sex. Cold Mountain star, Atkins revealed the Irish lothario spent nearly three hours begging her to sleep with him, but despite his stunning looks, she turned him down because he is 42 years her junior. She explains, "Three weeks before my 70th birthday, a simply stunning, gorgeous big film star came into my hotel room for sex without strings. I spent two and a half hours saying no, but it cheered me up fantastically. "I said no, in the end because he said, 'The reason you won't do it is because your body isn't as good as it was when you were young, isn't it? But I don't care about that.' "But I'm too proud of how I looked when I was younger. My body is still the same weight, but it's all distributed in a different way." The actress initially intended to spare Farrell's blushes by keeping his identity secret, but her agent says, "I can confirm that it is Colin Farrell that made the advance." Atkins and Farrell met during filming of movie Ask The Dust which hits cinemas later this year.

Paramount Pictures has acquired Michael Stadther's treasure hunt book A Treasure's Trove: A Fairy Tale About Real Treasure for Parents and Children of All Ages for Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner to produce through their C/W Prods. The book, which Stadther self-published in December via Treasure Trove Inc., combines an illustrated story of fairies living in the Great Forest with clues to real treasures that are hidden around the United States for readers to find and keep. The book is on the New York Times paperback books best-seller list. The treasures include diamonds and sapphires worth $1 million. To redeem the prizes, readers must find 18-karat gold tokens, which Stadther has hidden in public places. None of the treasures has yet been discovered. Other projects in the works at C/W include War of the Worlds, starring Cruise and directed by Steven Spielberg; The Eye; and Mission: Impossible III. Upcoming releases include Elizabethtown and director Robert Towne's Ask the Dust. Alan Nevins at the Firm negotiated the deal on behalf of Bob Diforio, who represents the book and the author through his D4EO Literary Agency.
For the second time this year, DreamWorks has backed out of a co-distribution deal with Paramount Pictures. After lengthy talks to back Robert Towne's Ask the Dust, an adaptation of John Fante's Depression-era novel with Colin Farrell and Salma Hayek, the studio was unable to close a deal, according to Variety. Instead, Paramount will handle distribution in the U.S. and as-yet-unnamed international territories. Back in March, DreamWorks eased away from a deal to co-distribute Elizabethtown, Cameron Crowe's upcoming ensemble comedy; Paramount now has exclusive North American rights to the picture. It's worth noting that both pictures are Cruise/Wagner Productions. Meanwhile, DreamWorks and Paramount are still in league on three upcoming films: The Stepford Wives, Collateral and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.
