Kendrick Lamar is teaming up with South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker for a new live-action comedy.
The untitled feature film is being produced by Lamar and Dave Free under their media company pgLang. Stone and Parker are on board as co-producers, and Paramount Pictures will handle the film’s theatrical and home distribution. A release date has been set for July 4th, 2025.
When the project was first announced in 2022, it was described as a live-action comedy written by Veron Chatman, which “will depict the past and present coming to a head when a young Black man who is interning as a slave reenactor at a living history museum discovers that his white girlfriend’s ancestors once owned his.”

Everyone seems to have a personal story about Paul Reubens, aka Pee-wee Herman. And those stories seem always to revolve around birthdays. I didn’t know Reubens, but apparently half of the people on my Facebook timeline did, because they’re all sharing memories about the lengths Reubens would go to every year to celebrate their big day.
“He loved to make your birthday special,” wrote Joel Stillerman, the former MTV and AMC exec who played a role in helping “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” get made, and later worked with him on the film “Blow.” “The texts, memes, videos and gifs would start in the morning and continue all day until you were in tears, and disbelief that anyone could pull this off. Because you knew that it wasn’t just you.”
Quite honestly, seeing the number of people just on my social media timeline who have a similar Paul Reubens story...

“The Shivering Truth” premieres next week, as part of the Sunday night block on Adult Swim. But for anyone adventurous enough to take a chance on a stop-motion descent into some dark territory of the human psyche, IndieWire is presenting the first episode in advance of the series premiere.
This quarter-hour creation comes from Vernon Chatman, the co-creator of “Wonder Showzen” who also helped bring “The Heart, She Holler” to Adult Swim back in 2011. Chatman also voices characters in the series, joining a voice cast for this debut episode that also includes Jon Glaser, Kevin Breznahan, Miriam Tolan, and Ivy Chatman.
As part of a certain amount of due diligence, this intro is the time to reiterate that this is an episode of TV that will likely make some viewers uncomfortable. Anyone expected a traditional heartwarming stop-motion special is in for a deep, profound surprise. (To wit: A flipbook sent...

“Avenue Q.” “Meet the Feebles.” “Ted.” “Ted 2.” “Greg the Bunny.” “Wonder Showzen.” Hell, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit.” If each and every one of these titles is completely unfamiliar to you, and you are eager to start studying for your driver’s test, you may well go googly-eyed at “The Happytime Murders,” with its nonstop depictions of innocent-looking yet depraved puppets swearing, smoking, screwing, and exploding into geysers of fluff. For the rest of us, this adolescent YouTube sketch laboriously stretched to 90 minutes is notable only for its provenance – directed by longtime puppetmaster and Jim Henson scion Brian Henson – and its litany of missed opportunities, and it should soon be movin’ right along out of multiplexes.
Much like last year’s similarly misguided “Bright,” “The Happytime Murders” takes place in a Los Angeles where humans coexist uneasily with an oppressed and despised fictional minority group; in this case, Muppet-like puppets.

This week’s question: Which is the best show to watch under the influence?

Just look at the great psychoactive-friendly comedies out there right now: “Baskets,” “Broad City,” “Man Seeking Woman,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Nathan For You,” “Review,” “Rick and Morty”… just about everything labeled a comedy that airs after 10 p.m. in your...

Director John Lee seems, at first, to be an odd fit for a Pee-wee Herman movie. A quick note: my computer finally gave up the ghost last week, and I’ve spent the past five or so days scrambling to get back up and running. I’ve never gone this long without posting at HitFix, not since we began the site, and it’s a disconcerting feeling to just watch pop culture flow by without having the tools be part of the conversation. It’s amazing how ingrained it is at this point, and even when I’m working as hard as I can, I still always feel like there’s more that I’d like to write and publish than I’m able to actually accomplish. Case in point: I was hoping to publish this review last Friday night after my sons joined me and my girlfriend for an evening built around the Netflix premiere of Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday, directed by John Lee. Pee-wee Herman, the delightfully chirpy man-child that he is, hatches a plan for a grand adventure in the first full-length trailer for Netflix’s feature, Pee-wee’s Big Holiday.
Having portrayed the character for more than 30 years, Paul Reubens is practically synonymous with the childlike Pee-wee, and today’s snippet only showcases more of that signature, innocent charm. The remainder of the cast will be rounded out by Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike Xxl), Alia Shawkat and Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Stephanie Beatriz.
As the title suggests, Big Holiday will see Reubens’ character finally journey beyond the idyllic borders of Fairville. Buoyed by his newfound confidence – thanks in no part to Manganiello’s devilishly handsome stranger – he sets out on an impromptu road trip, crossing paths with angry bank robbers along the way.

In 1999, comedian Paul Reubens went on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and announced that he was working on a new movie for his manic signature character, Pee-wee Herman. Now, just 17 short years later, a new film featuring his signature character — Pee-wee Herman's Big Holiday — will have its world premiere at SXSW Film Festival this March.
Originally created as a sketch-comedy character by Reubens in the late Seventies, Pee-wee Herman became a bona fide cult sensation thanks to Tim Burton's 1985 film, Pee-wee's Big Adventure. Reubens then took his alter ego to the small screen,...

All this week, we've been exploring the role of marijuana in popular culture. When it came time to assemble a guide to the best entertainment to consume after getting lifted, we figured: Who better to poll than those people who entertain for a living? So we asked a handful of actors, writers, comedians, and musicians, all of whom are familiar with the ways of the weed, what they enjoy when high. As it turns out, it's the same dumb shit as everyone else.Miles TellerI used to smoke weed All the time. It started in high school, but mostly in college. We used to watch Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Wonder Showzen, Robot Chicken, and play a lot of video games. Once I moved to California, I stopped smoking as much. I started to, but I was just way too high. When you’re in college you can not answer...

It seems like every website in the Western hemisphere and a lot besides are regurgitating Netflix’s new press release about their original movie Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday. Not only is it not news that the film will be a Netflix premiere – that dates back to 2014 – it’s not even news that Wonder Showzen’s John Lee will be directing.
All credit to Roger Friedman of Showbiz 411 for reporting these facts and many more besides over a month ago. It’s the extra info that’s really worth repeating.
As well as Pee-Wee Herman, who will of course be played by Paul Rubens as he has been for the last 34 years, there are several other key characters in the film. The ones we know about all seem to be female.
There’s Pepper and Freckles, “pretty” and “tough” girls of around 30 who seem to be bank robbers; they sound like...

The word arrived via cheery, multi-coloured carrier pigeon (okay, just the regular old ‘net sources) in December that Pee-Wee Herman’s new film would debut on Netflix. Now we know a little bit more about it, including the fact that it’s called Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday. John Lee, a director who has worked on shows such as Wonder Showzen and Inside Amy Schumer (which might be how he connected with Holiday producer Judd Apatow, who has just worked with Schumer on Trainwreck) will call the shots for the new film, focusing on Paul Reubens’ manic cheer sprite meeting a mysterious stranger and being inspired to take his first ever holiday. “Judd and I dreamt up this movie four years ago,” says Pee-Wee. “The world was much different back then — Netflix was waiting by the mailbox for red envelopes to arrive. I’ve changed all that. The future is here.

From You’re Next director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett comes The Guest, a wacko action/horror comedy that rocks and rolls like a midnight madness movie, where expectations about pacing and tone are challenged, and good ol’ cinematic chaos reigns. Leading the film is Dan Stevens, formerly of BBC series “Downton Abbey,” who plays a kind ex-soldier named David who shows up one day at the Peterson family’s door, and begins to cozy into their daily lives. However, as the soldier spends more time as visitor, he slowly reveals himself to be a strangely wired individual, whose charm and incredible presence only provides a mask for his true origins.
Along with You’re Next, Wingard & Barrett have also made films like A Horrible Way to Die, and the V/H/S anthology shorts. Both of them also appeared as actors in Joe Swanberg’s post-Drinking Buddies experimental murder mystery 24 Exposures.

If you want to test your patience and see something truly bizarre, head to Williamsburg's Spectacle Theater for the pornographic, postapocalyptic comedy The Final Flesh. Both inane and mesmeric, The Final Flesh was scripted by Emmy-nominated comedy writer Vernon Chatman (of the acidhead kid's show parody Wonder Showzen) and produced by four different made-on-demand porn companies.

When something controversial, bizarre or shocking graces your tellybox, do you change the channel? Or even shut it off? No, of course you don’t; the last thing you want to do is look away. That’s why the most Wtf TV moments – even those discussed in hushed whispers – experience a special kind of longevity, still frequently referenced and remembered decades after their initial run.
True, there have been many moments of this variety to send the outraged and disgusted crying to Ofcom over the years – ecstasy trial Drugs Live, nineties magazine show The Word and anarchic black comedy Brass Eye to name just a few. There was a certain point in history, somewhere between The Simpsons and Daria, when TV animation ceased to be the sole provenance of kids drooling over their morning bowls of Lucky Charms. These days, cartoons for grown-ups are not only ubiquitous, but hilariously twisted and high-quality to boot — and that's due in large part to a phenomenon called Adult Swim. What began as a freaky little block of late-night programming has evolved into a vast, even-freakier universe of animated and live-action series with a sardonic, absurdist sense of humor that's...

The stone-faced countenance of Christopher Meloni peered out at Law & Order: Svu viewers for 12 years, but he’s known to many not for his intense dramatic glares but for his scene-stealing performances in cult comedies like 2001’s Wet Hot American Summer and 2004’s Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (not to mention an appearance on Wonder Showzen as the Cooties Spokesman). Those comedic roles showed that he had a funnier side than what you might expect from watching him on the gritty NBC spinoff and his recurring role on HBO’s brutal Oz. Now both sides of the Meloni persona have mind-melded into his character on his new Thursday night Fox comedy, Surviving Jack. As Jack Dunlevy, an ex-military man turned doctor turned stay-at-home dad, Meloni’s steely gaze is put to use teaching his two teenage kids right from wrong. Vulture recently spoke with the 53-year-old Meloni about his...

Under their production company Pffr, Vernon Chatman and John Lee have made some of the most brilliantly and aggressively weird programming to ever air on television. Their children's show parody "Wonder Showzen," which ran on MTV2 for two seasons from 2005 to 2006, used the bright, chipper tone of a "Sesame Street"-style series to achieve dark, caustically funny moments -- like an apparently instructional segment on the importance of hand-washing that becomes an ode to Ocd ("The shame never seems to scrub off," notes the child voiceover). Since then, the pair and their collaborators Alyson Levy and Jim Tozzi have found a fitting home for their work at Adult Swim, where they've had first the computer-animated saga "Xavier: Renegade Angel," then "Delocated," a fake reality series about a man in witness protection starring Jon Glaser. Pffr's latest series "The Heart, She Holler" may be the most singular and strange yet, a...

Because I have the sleeping habits of a 75-year-old golden girl, I rarely stay up past 11:00 pm (sometimes even 9:00 is pushing it). But I’m more than willing to cast aside my senior citizen bedtime if it means that I get to watch The Heart, She Holler—Adult Swim’s latest foray into live-action comedy. This twisted six-part miniseries, starring Patton Oswalt and Bob’s Burgers’ Kristen Schaal, is a hodgepodge of Lynchian surrealism, Southern Gothic melodrama, and absurdist humor. Although Adult Swim is known for its incendiary programming, The Heart, She Holler, which first aired earlier this month, is arguably the most subversive and definitely the most disturbingly funny live-action comedy currently on the network (and who would expect anything less from a show produced by Pffr, the company behind Wonder Showzen?). The inbred, redneck Heartshe clan is the family at the center of the show. The first episode opens with recently deceased “Boss...

Once upon a time, Amy Poehler was one fourth of a comedy quartet called The Upright Citizens Brigade, which birthed a theater, school, and television show. The Comedy Central cult hit from the late nineties laid the groundwork for the type of absurdist sketch comedy in the tradition of predecessor The State and Mr. Show, and shows that followed, like Stella and Wonder Showzen. Being that Amy is a lady, it was fun (for her and now for us) to get all dressed up in different costumes, which explains why she posed for awesome candid Polaroids every time she sported a different look for the show. New York Magazine has collected 30 of these candids in an oral history of the Ucb, and they’re all worth looking at.
