Principal photography is set to begin on Legendary Pictures‘ Krampus, a horror-comedy feature film that reveals an irreverently twisted side to the Christmas holiday.
This darkly festive tale of a yuletide ghoul is co-written and directed by Michael Dougherty. The visual effects are from the Oscar-winning creature-effects wizardry of Weta Workshop and the Oscar-winning visual effects of Weta Digital.
Krampus will be released on December 4, 2015, by Universal Pictures.
A humorously creepy alternative to the traditional holiday classic, Krampus stars Adam Scott (“Parks and Recreation,” The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty), Academy Award nominee Toni Collette (Little Miss Sunshine, The Sixth Sense), Golden Globe nominee Allison Tolman (“Fargo“), David Koechner (Anchorman series), Emmy nominee Conchata Ferrell (“Two and a Half Men”), Emjay Anthony (Chef), Stefania Owen (The Lovely Bones) and Krista Stadler (Lena Rais).

Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and New Line Cinema jointly announced on Friday that the much-anticipated final film in Peter Jackson’s trilogy adaptation of the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, has now been titled The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies.
The film, previously titled “The Hobbit: There and Back Again,” will be released worldwide December 17, 2014, with select international territories releasing on December 10, 2014.
Peter Jackson stated, “Our journey to make ‘The Hobbit’ Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo’s own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we’ve gone along. ‘There and Back Again’ felt like the right name for the second of a two-film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced — after all, Bilbo has already arrived...

If you haven't yet seen The Devil's Rock, a WWII-based horror film that marked the feature debut for New Zealand director and Weta Workshop special effects artist Paul Campion, you've missed a dark, gruesome and intense tale that feels like it's torn straight from the pages of the classic horror comics... although it's actually based in part on historic events, along with some chilling occult lore. Here's the trailer: I was introduced to Campion recently (by Bane of Yoto author Josh Viola), and I found out he's got tons more amazing horror projects in the pipe – most notably a feature adaptation of Brian Keene's acclaimed horror novel Dark Hollow. Naturally, I had to learn more about that, as well as Paul's amazing short films, and he graciously offered us the scoop. Fearnet: For those who haven't yet seen The Devil's Rock, can you explain the genesis of that project?...

New Zealand takes enormous pride in what Peter Jackson has done and continues to do so. This week, the Giant Eagles which were so instrumental in first part of The Hobbit swooped into Wellington Airport in New Zealand. Created by Weta Workshop, and in time for The Desolation of Smaug, the eagles, along with Gandalf atop one, looks nothing short of mind-blowing. There’s a time lapse video below and some footage of this epic display! We also have a second video with the official launch by Sir Richard Taylor (co-founder of Weta Workshop) and its this second video does a great job of highlighting the insane amount of detail and work involved. Every single feather was created and “nailed” on! Insanity and sheer brilliance! Good job Weta! Via Stuff Nz / New Zealand Herald...

As we sit in full on anticipation mode for the upcoming next generation consoles, I thought it was time for a look back at some of the great things from this generation. Much has been made of the new looks the Xbox One and PS4 are sporting, and rightfully so. If you're going to spend $400 to $500 it better not look like a pet rock. Next Gen isn't the only way to get a sweet looking console however, as many talented modders have made their own dream machines. While some of these were not officially licensed by Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft, the community has done a knock up job building some truly creative and just flat out cool custom consoles. Without further ado, let's get to spotlighting some of the best and coolest customs of this gen.

Wellington, New Zealand — A crate full of sushi arrives. Workers wearing wetsuit shirts or in bare feet bustle past with slim laptops. With days to go, a buzzing intensity fills the once-dilapidated warehouses where Peter Jackson's visual-effects studio is rushing to finish the opening film in "The Hobbit" trilogy.
The fevered pace at the Weta Digital studio near Wellington will last nearly until the actors walk the red carpet Nov. 28 for the world premiere. But after "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" hits theaters, there's more work to be done.
Weta Digital is the centerpiece of a filmmaking empire that Jackson and close collaborators have built in his New Zealand hometown, realizing his dream of bringing a slice of Hollywood to Wellington. It's a one-stop shop for making major movies – not only his own, but other blockbusters like "Avatar" and "The Avengers" and hoped-for blockbusters like next year's "Man of Steel.

Because. They. Can. We can come up with dozens of reasons why theater owners would want us to literally move in to their places of business the weekend before the big premiere, but we think the first one covers the rest. Yes, advance tickets for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey go on sale tomorrow at noon, but so do tickets for the extended cuts marathon of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which will screen on December 7 and 8, the weekend before The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey premiere.
And of course, there’s the question of which version of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey to see when it premieres the following weekend – IMAX? Hfr 3D? Standard 2D? How about all of them, you know, for comparison’s sake?
So find the most comfortable theater, with the best supply of Milk Duds, and get ready to settle in for two weekends in Middle-earth.

Piece measuring 13m, featuring Gollum diving for 4m fish, welcomes visitors to 'the middle of Middle-earth' in New Zealand
If you happen to be visiting Wellington airport over the next few months, don't be surprised to be greeted by Gollum, the miserable creature at the centre of Jrr Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
A 13m (43ft) sculpture, built by Japanese artist Masayuki Ohashi out of polystyrene and epoxy resin using chainsaws and robotics, has been installed at the airport to celebrate the arrival in cinemas next month of Peter Jackson's first Hobbit film, An Unexpected Journey. The movie forms part of a new prequel trilogy to the Kiwi film-maker's Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings triptych, in which Gollum is once again played by British actor Andy Serkis via motion capture technology. The first of Peter Jackson’s 75,000 Hobbit movies is nearly upon us and what better way to celebrate than to build a 43-foot sculpture of Gollum in your airport?
Wellington International Airport in New Zealand (where The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy were filmed), unveiled the awesome/nightmarish creation from Japanese artist Masayuki Ohashi on Friday. Made out of polystyrene and epoxy resin, the sculpture features three 13-foot fish suspended in front of Gollum’s head and single arm, along with some bubbles for good measure. It was designed by Weta Workshop, the special-effects company behind Jackson’s two trilogies.

As we’ve learned from Flight of the Conchords, one of the only things that New Zealand is known for these days is Lord of the Rings. And they seem to be quite proud of it. As evidence in this new art installation by Weta at the Wellington, New Zealand airport. Opening this week, the massive statue of Gollum reaching out to catch a juicy sweet fish will now greet travelers as they enter the terminal. As you will see from the images below, it’s both awe-inspiring and terribly frightening. The 13m sculpture was designed and produced by Richard Taylor and Weta Workshop supervisors Rob Gillies and Sarah Morris. It comes to life just in time for the frenzy that will no doubt accompany the release of The Hobbit, the first film in a new trilogy, in December. Check out images of the stunning installation below: Also, courtesy of the Wellington Airport, here...

Headed Down Under? Don't be frightened. Wellington Airport, in New Zealand, has a new official greeter: Gollum, the misunderstood monster from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings novels and Peter Jackson's movie adaptations. His arrival comes just ahead of Oscar-winner Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which opens next month. Like Jackson's Rings movies, it too was shot in New Zealand. "Wellington Airport feels like the home of Gollum after spending so many months here during the last three films," Sir Richard Taylor, of the Weta Workshop - which manufactured and installed Gollum from Japanese...

One year from today Peter Jackson's long awaited film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released in theaters! This will no doubt be the longest twelve month of my life, thankfully we have a bunch of great films between now and then to tide us over and keep our minds occupied. I'm excited as hell to jump back into Middle Earth and The Shire. The Hobbit is one of my favorite books of all time, and I can't wait to see it brought to life on the big screen! There's no doubt in my mind that Jackson will bring back that same magic we saw in The Lord of the Rings, This time it's being shot in 3D in 48 fps, and it will look spectacular!
Today an official synopsis for the film was revealed. If you've read the book then you already know the story, but it's still...

I admit to having been pretty skeptical when I first saw the trailer [1] for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. We’ve seen on several occasions how advanced motion capture technology can fail even the most talented of directors, and the teaser trailer did nothing to assuage my fears that this would happen again with Tintin. But then I heard good buzz about the film coming out of Comic-Con [2], and I started to get excited by this Spielberg/Jackson collaboration. This week, Paramount Pictures invited /Film on a trip to Wellington, Nz to visit Weta and see a presentation on the film. I accepted this opportunity and made the brutal flight to New Zealand from Boston, Ma, joining several other representatives/writers from some of your favorite entertainment sites. Over the next week or two, I hope to post up some further quotes and thoughts from the visit.

As promised, here’s Peter Jackson’s first video from the set of The Hobbit. Enjoy
No word on the dragon, Smaug, as of yet. However, The Hobbit Blog posted this:
We receive a lot of questions about Smaug, and while it is a bit soon to let the dragon out of the bag, we can point you to this excellent bit of research by Forbes, which has just ranked Smaug in 7th place on the 2011 Forbes Fictional 15 ranking of the richest fictional characters.
As was first reported in the Hollywood Reporter, Andy Serkis, who played the iconic Gollum in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings, has been tapped by Jackson to serve as second unit director on the two Hobbit films, which are now in production in New Zealand. Serkis will, of course, also be reprising his role as Gollum in The Hobbit.
