Matt suspects a couple relationship is not what it seems
kfo949413 August 2013
After a few episodes where the ending of the story did not play well for a 'Gunsmoke' series, this show brings back all the entertaining western theme that the viewer can handle. A nice story about trickery and deceit in the rural west in the late 1800's.

The episode begins easily enough when a new saloon girl, Bella Grant, is sweet on a local young rancher named Jerry Cass. Jerry had been living on the ranch since the death of his father and now only has a brother, Brisco, that has just returned from living in St Louis. Brisco is none to happy that Jerry is dating a saloon girl and vows to put a stop to the relationship. But when it keeps growing, Jerry and Bella plan for a wedding. But there is one request that Bella makes of Jerry. She wants to live in St Louis for at least six months to see if he will like city life.

Marshal Dillon, when hearing that Bella wants to move from the ranch, suspects something is afoul with this request. Matt starts checking on people and finds there is more to this relationship that just marriage.

An interesting story that keep the viewer glued to the screen the entire time. A well rounded cast that included Ken Curtis (Brisco) making his second appearance on the series and the beautiful Lucy Marlow as the saloon girl. Unlike some other recent episodes, this show never lost the audience and had a ending worthy of the series. Good watch.

Mix Fast

Warning: Spoilers
Dillon don't get mixing into family affairs unless there is gunplay, then he will "mix fast". I loved that line in the episode.

Its unusual that the 2 lead guest stars, Lucy Marlow (had a short career of only 15 titles, her only time on Gunsmoke) as Bella Grant and James Drury (went on later to The Virginian fame) as Jerry Cass are both still alive today (Sept 10, 2013). Don't see that too often. Again, I didn't recognize Ken Curtis (Brisco) in this episode. And again Ken Curtis gets killed in the episode (just like in episode 21 of season 4 the "Jayhawkers", but not by Dillon in either one. Though Dillon does knockout Curtis with one swift right hook. Just laid him out! I guess in a way they knew he would be on the show in the future and didn't want Dillon killing him).

Typical love story with greed and deception involving the 2 brothers and a woman. Chester actually doesn't mess up in this episode. Dillon figures out what's going on and realizes the scam the one brother is doing to the other. My 2 problems were the episode ended too conveniently and the I didn't understand why the banker never told the one son about his Father's will. Just because he didn't stop by the bank is not a reason. The Father died, you let the son know about the will.

So Who Do I Trust

The schemes fly fast and furious as saloon girl and her confederate try to gyp poor farmer Jerry out of his farm. It's a complicated series of maneuvers so you may need the proverbial scorecard, but it's a pretty inventive storyline from writer Meston.

Of course, the main interest now may be in seeing Ken Curtis in a very non-Festus, straight part. He's also very convincing, but I had to look twice to recognize him in a non-scruffy part. Episode also features a young James Drury several years before his long-running part on the Virginian. Though the action sometimes warrants a stretch, the excellent cast makes it work. All in all, a decent, if unremarkable, entry.

The CAST is so EXCITING! A MUST SEE!!

Sorry, not really a review but please allow? 🙏🏻 Just that it's such a TREASURE to find an early "GUNSMOKE" ep guest starring JAMES DRURY (the Virginian) and KEN CURTIS (Festus on GUNSMOKE in a few yrs) acting together! Both doing such an excellent job that i immediately forgot about them in the prior roles mentioned! 🎭 WAIT! Not to mention that Gunsmoke's hero James Arness is in this episode too! All so young! If you're a TRUE🤠FAN, you don't want to miss this episode!!

Just Business... Plus Laws

Warning: Spoilers
**SPOILERS** I liked this episode, even if it was just a little tooooo soap operatic. It was interesting seeing Ken Curtis going from a real good guy trail hand to a no-count thief intent on doing his own brother out of his share of his dad's will (an early Dallas type plot?).

I've got a small problem with the law. Lawyers, that is. ANY prosperous town is gonna have at least one practicing attorney just to keep things legal, and yet it seems like Dodge City has none at all. Even if Kitty said all there was to Dodge was dust and heat (great line). Having said that, there will probably be six in tomorrows' episodes on METV. But for now, let's just ask a couple of things. WHY didn't the banker call in Jerry Cass when he knew old man Cass was croaked? Second, why is it that without a warrant for same, did he just let Matt take the will out of the bank? Maybe old Botkin had a little hand in the game, and knew he could get his paws on the ranch from Brisco? Matt sticks his nose in, and Botkin realizes he better drop his interest? Maybe Matt knows Botkin isn't exactly straight and narrow. Maybe that's why he didn't worry a lot when Botkin's bank was held up before, and the slick outlaws got away; maybe, just...

By the way, Lawyers aren't the only thing missing from Dodge in every episode, you know??

Just A Saloon Girl
StrictlyConfidential7 March 2021
(*Bella Grant quote*) - "Well, I'm ready. Let's go down and start a fight!"

Young rancher, Jerry Cass is sweet on saloon girl, Bella Grant.

What Jerry doesn't know is that Bella has a secret connection with his estranged brother, Briscoe.

When Marshal Dillon finds out the whole story he moves fast to make sure that no one is breaking the law.
