Don Rickles’ many famous friends and fans are taking to social media in the wake of his death to mourn and share memories of the beloved comedian.
The legendary insult comic died on Thursday, with his longtime representative Paul Shefrin telling People in a statement: “Emmy-Award winning iconic comedian Don Rickles passed away at his home Los Angeles this morning (Thursday) as a result of kidney failure.”
“Rickles would have turned 91 on May 8. Rickles also had great success as an actor and best-selling author,” he continued. “He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara, as well as their daughter...

When the cast of Hidden Figures took home the 2017 Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture on Sunday, Taraji P. Henson thanked the three women who inspired the film.
“We stand on the shoulders of three American heroes,” Henson said. “Without them we would not be able to reach the stars.”
The credit for these women is long overdue. Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan were African-American mathematicians who played an integral part in Nasa’s space-race successes — but their collective contribution was largely left out of the history books.

Another powerful federal government agency has joined a probe into Hollywood’s discrimination against female directors, which begs the question — how far are the studios and TV networks from winding up in court? News surfaced on Wednesday that the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (Ofccp) was involved in an ongoing gender bias investigation launched by the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission last October, the result of a survey given to female directors by the Aclu. Employment statistics for women in the director’s chair are as grim as ever: only 9 percent of the top 250 domestic grossing films and 28 percent of...

'Ben-Hur' 2016 with Jack Huston: Chariot race to the death. 'Ben-Hur' 2016 trailer: 'Gladiator' meets 'Fast Seven' meets 'Star Wars' meets… Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have released the trailer for their 2016 Ben-Hur remake (or reboot or readaptation) – a.k.a. Fast and Furious A.D., as one wag called it in an online comment. Instead of grandiose spectacle featuring at its core a “human” story with Christian overtones, this chariot-and-sandals epic is being sold as Gladiator meets Fast Seven meets Spartacus: Blood and Sand meets Star Wars – with Morgan Freeman's Sheik Ilderim as the Roman Empire's dreadlocked version of Alec Guinness' Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi. Say what you will, the trailer-makers sure know their target audience. And that's not the same crowd that would go check out what's usually referred to in the U.S. media as “faith” (i.e., Christian) movies. One assumes that particular audience segment will be getting...

Devil’s Due: Satan is an Equal Opportunity Baby Snatcher in Thorndike’s Debut
Credited as a ‘sinister ode to Rosemary’s Baby’ (though, there probably is no other kind of ode to extend to the material), Stewart Thorndike’s directorial debut, Lyle arrives with surprising straight faced self-seriousness (pun intended) as it contends to enlighten us with another dose of the dark one’s endless fascination with collecting human babies. It’s been a grand year for a resurgence in odes and homages to Levin’s horror classic, originally adapted in 1968 and starring Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes. We’ve just experienced an American television miniseries remake directed by Agnieszka Holland, and then there was that found footage garbage, Devil’s Due, a film that only serves to highlight the difference between homage and blatant rip-off. But Thorndike goes for something a little different, removing the terror from the...

For Artists Working in Film, It’s The Best and Worst of Times
If you are a filmmaker, you are trapped in a paradox. It is a time of tremendous opportunity, yet also a time of great hardship. Innovations abound, while severe restrictions apply. Celebrate or fight? Give up or prosper?
To complicate matters, you face many choices about what to create, how to do it, who is your audience, and where to release your work. Examples of best practices, in all of these categories, are limited. Sometimes the choices may feel more limiting than liberating.
Where do we go from here?

Remember "Joe Millionaire," the cruel twist on dating show conventions that allowed a fleet of love-hungry women to chase a handsome guy on national TV under the misconception he had a ton of money when the reality was he was mostly broke? Ah, those were the days. Fox is back at it again with "I Wanna Marry 'Harry'" (premiering Tues. May 27 at 8:00 p.m. Et). The show has found a lookalike for the Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales (aka Prince Harry) in regular guy Matthew Hicks. Now, 12 suckers, I mean American women, get a chance to date him! Obviously, these women can't be the sharpest knives in the drawer if they think a royal this high up in the line of succession is going to look for love on an American reality TV show, but then again, a free vacation in England may have been temptation enough. The ladies include a preschool teacher,...

Equal opportunity came to The Rub when Riley hired the spa's first-ever male masseur on "The Client List." For now, though, Derek is strictly involved in the above-board legal kinds of massages. In fact, he doesn't even know about the other side of the business -- which probably means the women should keep their chatter about it to a minimum.
At first, Georgia was totally against it, but Riley stood up to her and told her it didn't matter. If Georgia was going to sell The Rub to Riley, then she needed to be able to back off and let Riley run things the way she wanted to. When Georgia came in to check up on her and this male masseur, though, she had a change of heart.

We already knew Sports Illustrated cover model Kate Upton was great at being the object of men’s fantasies — hello, “Cat Daddy.” But lately, she’s been getting pretty good at appealing to women too. There was the unicorn-baby video she shot over the summer that tapped into some kind of Jungian symbolism we sort of got. And now, courtesy of Vogue Germany and director Bruce Weber, she’s fulfilling a bunch of literal fantasies we women have had — and some we didn’t even know we had until now. Enjoy the sounds of Bobby Darin’s “It Had to Be You” as we count all the ways in which we’d like to be in Kate’s shoes/bare feet.
1. Very cute boy trusts us enough to let us groom him.
2. We playfully roll down a hill like little kids, except he’s shirtless. Oops! We might bump into each other!

After the critical and box office success of The Avengers this year, it is safe to say we are living in the Golden Age of Joss Whedon, which means, among other things: more badass women! Now, I loved Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow just as much as every other lesbian with eyeballs, but I still bristle a little about how she was outnumbered six-to-one by super-men. So it's been a relief to watch the casting announcements role out for Whedon's new Avengers TV spin-off, S.H.I.E.L.D., because the six-member team promises three lady heroes and three dudely heroes. Equal opportunity ass-whoopin'! But will any of the female leads be gay? We think there's a chance!
"You'd think the guy who created Buffy might give me more lady backup."
For the uninitiated among us, S.H.I.E.L.D. is Marvel's catch-all military enforcement unit.

We already knew young King Joffrey ("Game of Thrones") was a monster. If it wasn't the perpetual sneer or the seething arrogance pouring from every pore, it might have been the beheading of his betrothed's father in front of his betrothed. That always signals trouble. So why, I ask, was it necessary to further cement his evil cred with a scene in which two wenches (the go-to period/fantasy word for "whore") are obligated to abuse each other with hideous metal objects, the victim stark naked, her lovely -- likely anachronistic -- Brazilian in full view, and her ass turned awkwardly so the camera could catch the full range of her exposed, about-to-be-thrashed, lady bottom? Really? We needed that?
Then, of course, there's Littlefinger, always nicely garbed in his well-tailored Nehru tunics, who can't seem to have a conversation without one or two naked wenches writhing behind him in real or feigned ecstasy,...

Current “Celebrity Apprentice” star, Lisa Lampanelli, recently released her latest album, “Equal Opportunity Offender: The Best of Lisa Lampanelli” on April 17th via Warner Bros. With reality television and millions of Kim Kardashians clouding the entertainment air, it might alarm you that Lampanelli’s claim to fame isn’t her mean streak on “Celebrity Apprentice”; it’s her tact for discussing social and political topics so eloquently. Welcome back, Mad Men! What has it been? Seventeen months? Not like anyone was counting down to your return. Or that everyone was counting down to your return…. Alright, we missed you, Mad Men. Tremendously. And the fact that you came back with a stellar two-hour episode — entitled “A Little Kiss” — meant that you missed us as well.
So, where to begin? That it is June 1966? How about with the fact that Don Draper (Jon Hamm) is back in the saddle, both at work and at home. Over at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, he’s still the big draw even after last season’s full-page, preemptive strike of an ad against cigarette companies (a stroke of genius in my book but a potential business killer in 1965). Clients, like Heniz and Mohawk Airlines, are drunkardly tripping over themselves — Pete Campbell-style — to work with the man. He’s also not playing a...

In September of last year, an Asian-American actor posted an offhand status message on Facebook. He wrote that he'd finally been seen by one of the top Off-Broadway theater companies in the city, and he was excited about it. But he also wondered why, after graduating from one of the best graduate acting schools in the country, and living in the city for almost 10 years, it had taken him so long to get his foot in the door there.
The actor wasn't aiming to get someone in trouble or cause an uproar, really -- he was merely expressing a frustration. But it sparked a major response. Other Asian-American actors responded in droves: some who had been working for decades vented similar frustrations, while others mentioned that they had also never been seen by that theater and had hung onto similar thoughts for years.
Based on this online conversation, many started thinking on a wider scale.

This year’s Venice Film Festival had, as always, a very strong lineup, but the selection that’s risen above the rest to win the Golden Lion was Faust, the latest work from Russian Ark director Aleksandr Sokurov. Other notable wins include Michael Fassbender obtaining the Coppa Volpi for Shame, as well as Yorgos Lanthimos being honored with an Osella (Best Screenplay) statue for Alps. Shame also took home the Fipresci Award for Best Film.
Jury head Darren Aronofsky said that the slate was “exhilarating and maddening,” as there were “so many worthy films and so few prizes to give.” You can see his point when you look at everything they had to choose from. When your “losers” include Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Wuthering Heights, Carnage, and the aforementioned Alps and Shame, you’ve got your work cut out for you. And knowing that Faust beat out all of those...

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Contact me here. (And be sure and include your city and state and/or country!)
Q: So Lance Loud was the first openly gay person on reality television, on An American Family in 1973. I assume The Real World’s Pedro Zamora was the second. So who was the third? – Martin, Philadelphia, Pa
A: Norman Korpi (who is gay, but was portrayed as bisexual on the show), appeared on the first season of The Real World in 1992 and actually preceded Zamora, who didn’t appear until the third season, in 1994.
In the U.S., the first non-Real World reality show participant was Survivor’s Richard Hatch in 2000.
Since then, there have literally been hundreds. It’s surprising how far we’ve come so quickly, isn’t it?
Q: With the royal wedding fever gripping England two weeks ago, a question struck me, in terms of gay rights.

With indebtedness and dependency threatening the nation, Mark McKinnon remembers the Alamo-and finds 10 brave souls in Washington, from Paul Ryan to Dick Durbin, who dare to take on the status quo.
Like James Bowie and Davy Crockett, who dared to cross a line in the sand to join Col. William Barret Travis in defense of Texas independence, a brave few in Washington have taken a heroic first step to repel the forces of intransigence.

"In the present confusion of the political authorities of the country, and in the absence of the commander in chief, I beg leave to communicate to you the situation..." Travis wrote during the siege of the Alamo 175 years ago, in a letter that could have been written today. He saw clearly the coming threat and laid out a plan. He did not wait for reinforcements who would not come in time.

Military-wide drills to implement repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell have begun. Gay and lesbian service members can now read about how they must be treated equally-but still don't dare say they are gay for fear of losing their careers, reports Eve Conant.
This past Monday at 7:30 a.m., Air Force officer Jd Smith noticed on his work computer that training was about to begin. He was excited, and logged in right away for the online session.

As the country commemorates Martin Luther King Day and reflects on Tucson, The Daily Beast crunches the numbers to rank the tolerances of every state across America. How did yours stack up?
In the four-plus decades since Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, America has surely moved closer to a country where people are judged more by content of their character than the color of their skin-or their gender, religion or sexual orientation. In honor of today's national holiday, and mindful of the debate fostered by the massacre in Tucson nine days ago, The Daily Beast sought to examine which states are the most tolerant, devising a thorough point system that measures each state's residents based on their actions and opinions, as well the scope of state laws guaranteeing equal rights and protections, which reflects the broader political will.

If there's one workplace comedy you should not imitate the goings-on of, it's "30 Rock." According to a new study, it's the show with the most violations are far as Diversity, Equal Opportunity, and Respect in the Workplace.
We resent that. No diversity? What about Tracy and Grizz and Dot Com? And we all know Toofer went to Harvard. Jenna's all about diversity too. She's only been seen in blackface twice on the show and she's dating a tranny.
Okay, maybe pulling one-off scams with Kelsey Grammar, planning deliberate wardrobe malfunctions, and hitting on co-workers in the editing room to get work done faster (who happen to look like Paul Giamatti) isn't all supposed to be in a day's work.
"30 Rock" averages 11 violations per episode according to Global Compliance, who conducted the study. "Grey's Anatomy" placed second with 7 (we can see that), while "The Office" and "NCIS" averaged 5.

A recent study conducted by Global Compliance found 30 Rock to be the biggest violator of Diversity, Equal Opportunity, and Respect in the Workplace. It averaged 11 violations per episode; Grey’s Anatomy placed second, with 7. The Office and NCIS averaged 5.
Naturally, watching and mimicking shows like 30 Rock can be extremely dangerous for us lowly viewers who troll the real world. Why, in just 2010 alone, I’ve:
• Allowed people to believe I’d slept with Paul Giamatti (in the interest of expediting my edits)
• Asked my boss to role-play my droopy-lipped father from funky North Philly (after he refused to play the...

The headline of this story is a tad misleading, because there's really only one thing you need to know about "Piranha 3D:" It's utterly insane.
Inspired by the schlocky, love-it-or-hate-it franchise, the new movie spins a story about what happens when thousands of prehistoric fishies go tooth-to-flesh with thousands of college kids enjoying a sun-and-booze-filled spring break. It's not spoiling anything to say that it doesn't end well for the great majority of those slacking students. No sooner have they donned their skimpy bikinis and tapped their kegs, then the piranha strike. And strike. And strike. Blood flows, screams fly, terror reigns.
So, know that. But, of course, that's not all there is to keep in mind about the movie, which stars Elisabeth Shue,...

The Tony Nominations just came out and one of the funniest shows of the season, Lend Me A Tenor, was nominated for Best Revival of a Play.
I saw the show when I was in New York and it was hands down the best show I saw that week – and I saw some great shows! The moment the lights went down to the curtain call (one of the most inspired curtain calls I’ve ever seen), I never stopped laughing. Lend Me A Tenor does not disappoint.
One of the reasons the show is so good is because of Mary Catherine Garrison. She plays Maggie, Max’s (Justin Bartha) love interest in a show that is over-flowing with talent. Directed by Stanley Tucci, is also stars Tony Shalhoub, Anthony Lapaglia, Jan Maxwell and Brooke Adams, Mary Catherine shines in the role as the”virginal” damsel.

Fox has handed out a cast-contingent pilot order to a single-camera comedy from "Mind of Mencia" writer Sameer Asad Gardezi that is set at a politically incorrect nonprofit organization.
"Save Us Then the Whales," from 20th Century Fox Television and executive producer Peter Engel ("Last Comic Standing"), centers on Herbie Grueber, a middle-aged wheeler-dealer who works for a nonprofit that's trying to stay current. The charity maven approaches the world of fundraising as if he's bartering at a Moroccan bazaar, but his anything-goes approach rankles his idealistic new co-director.
Gardezi also wrote "Equal Opportunity," a short that was named best film at NBC Universal's inaugural Comedy Short Cuts Diversity Film Festival in 2006. The film's team got pitch meetings with Universal Pictures, Focus Features and Rogue Pictures and was awarded a $25,000 grant to produce a pilot presentation for NBC Universal Digital Media.
Gardezi went on to write for Comedy Central's "Mencia.
