Stunning drama.

Warning: Spoilers
4 out of 5 stars.

Second episode continues years later when Anya Taylor Joy is adopted. Adapting to the new lifestyle. And entering chess tournaments was a lot of fun to watch. Along with her adjusting to growing up. Well moving script and direction. It did have some slow moments. But good.

This series is brilliant. Never has chess been made sexy, enticing and captivating on screen as it has in this series. Taylor-joy is an absolute wonder to behold and she plays her roll with extreme poise, sophistication and diligence towards her craft. The soundtrack, the set pieces, the cinematography, all works of art. The series is one of the best that I've seen in a very long time.

Great casting, great acting, great story-telling

Warning: Spoilers
This show is a gem. Episode 1 features excellent character development and episode 2 further builds on that, giving you very textured characters you get to deeply care about. Much of that is owed to the impressive young actress Isla Johnston playing young Beth and of course Anya Taylor-Joy whose stares and subtle expressions come with such intensity that no words are even needed. Notice how that chess game at the end has zero dialogue yet the tension and suspense are so palpable.

Pilot Episode Part:2
ashishhsunny9 November 2020
I was a bit worried when I saw the transition of Beth's younger self to her older self happened just at the start of the episode. But Anya Taylor Joy brilliantly carried the character smoothly, This is brilliant acting! This could be considered as the Pilot episode Part 2 because of the introduction of an older Beth hence the new actor. Surprisingly it was as good as or even better than the first. The momentum and pacing is great to say the least. 'Nuff said, onto the next one.. PS: Always a pleasure to see Mr Harry Melling!!

Simply beautiful

A high-level production. Smooth directing and editing, crazy-good acting (throughout episode 1 i couldn't wait for Taylor-Joy to step into her role, wasn't disappointed at all), as well as astounding cinematography, with true-to-life sets and original color combinations.

O Torneio

Warning: Spoilers
O Gambito da Rainha (2020)

Series

1st Season

Episode Two - O Torneio

As it is good to see Dudley all arrogant and being defeated brilliantly, Mr Potter would be proud of the new member of the Weasley family.

I hope Beth's mother isn't being self-serving with her, but I liked her.

Beth pays her $10 debt to the janitor urgently.

When Beth looks confident, it's over, it's better to give up or you'll be humiliated.

As it is good to see Dudley all arrogant and being defeated brilliantly, Mr Potter would be proud of the new member of the Weasley family.

Episode two of the first season of the Miniseries O Gambito da Rainha watched on May 12, 2024.

Rating: 10/10.

Developing the Pieces
kinglear00926 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I admire the serialisation the Queen's Gambit is showing. This episodes deftly moves Beth from zero parents, to two parents, to one, and from basement games to a state tournament.

The chess tournament is exciting stuff - even if we can't see the moves, the atmosphere make it worth. The domestic material is more confused. The Wheatley's marriage disintegrates, which would be a bigger deal if Mr. Wheatley weren't such a non-factor and Mrs. Wheatley's dialogue weren't so overwrought. And, in a clever collision, the chess-powering tranquilising pills are back!

The acting belongs to the hyphens. Anna Taylor-Joy takes over as Beth and her bright, emotive eyes are one of the episode's delights. I wouldn't be surprised if they end up being the standout feature of the Queen's Gambit. And Jacob Fortune-Lloyd is a scene-stealer as the suave player Mr. Townes - finally we get some chess banter!

The score really establishes itself in this episode. There's a lovely piano theme the episode's director clearly loves, because it's splashed in most scenes. The 60s background is a bit broad here - there's one moment where Mrs Wheatley is discontentedly smoking and vacuuming in front of gaudy wallpaper and it's ... all a bit too much.

Still, a nice, contained episode.

Little better I guess?
TheCorniestLemur14 February 2021
I'm not sure whether Anya Taylor-Joy, as promised, did make this a little better or not for me.

She definitely gave a better performance than her child counterpart, but for one thing, she is not 15, much less 13, which her adopted parents apparently think she is, and for another, I can't tell why she's so awkward. Some of it might well be a kind of "screw the standards for women at the time" thing, in which case fine, but that doesn't explain why she peeped on that couple making out, or is really rude and talked over the grandmasters' chess match, so is she supposed to be autistic or something? I don't know, but it was something that bugged me quite a bit.

It might not have done if I cared about her more, because I still don't find myself being very interested in this story, but I'll call this episode a little better because at least in this one I was fairly entertained by the chess tournament at the end. Even if they did do that bloody stupid thing with the chessboard hallucination on the ceiling again.

I also couldn't help thinking that the mother's dialogue was distractingly dumb at times, the directing was worse than in the last episode, and so ultimately, I can't say that this was all that much better than the first episode. The story is still unbearably predictable and dull, although I will admit I really liked how subtly it implied that the dad was abusive.

Aside from that though...I'm still waiting to see what everyone sees in this show. Onto Episode 3 I guess...

Sets the pieces on the table right, yet the outcome of the game is unclear.
shivku-goku27 November 2020
This episode serves well to help the viewer understand the characters and their states, much like the start of a chess game. We see the incredible genius of Beth manifest engulf the world around her. We see the fire when it is small and how it will blaze to become bigger than it currently is. We see the grieving stepmom, who recovers from her troubles and shows signs of avarice, which will also add to the young flame.

The episode does a good job of setting the main character on her trajectory towards, what I can assume, would be a magnificent crescendo of glory and destruction. Although, some elements that have been inserted, like her womanhood, don't quite help me in predicting how it would play out in future episodes. But, I'll keep my eyes open to be able to connect the dots.

Awesome
okakacesar16 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The Queen's Gambit - Episode Two Continuing my marathon and what a wonderful episode. It's incredible how these confrontations on boards are more interesting than several hand-to-hand fights. How nice it is to see Beth beat everyone. When she looks confident, that's it, they can give up because there's no way to win. Harry Potter's cousin Dudley here, who knew. Potter liked her beating his cousin. He's quite arrogant. I was scared by the looks Beth's adoptive father gave her, it's amazing how every older man comes close to Beth that I get scared. I thought the transition between Beth as a child and Beth as a teenager was really cool. I liked the adoptive mother, with the exception of the comment about only black women working. And in the end she saw that Beth is her goose that lays golden eggs. Episode two watched on March 16, 2024.

Episode 2 - "Exchanges"
langjohannes-8589425 April 2023
I'm a big movie fan, as I've let it slip through in my reviews; sometimes you see a very bad movie and you wonder why you're so intrigued by the medium, but then there are these revelations, like Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, that answer those questions instantly and without any doubt, and I had exactly such an experience, such a revelation, with this episode; I haven't had that feeling since Kubrick's masterpiece. There is one scene in this episode where everything is perfect down to the last bar. Sometimes you don't find such scenes in several hundred films, some have never seen a scene like this. She reveals the true power of the medium and lets you see beyond the obvious, like planning ten moves in chess. This scene made me weep inside from the cinematic and cinematic beauty. To see such a scene in a series I never thought possible before. For me, it's one of the best scenes I've ever seen in a film (here a series). In this scene, it's not just the camera that always perfectly films what's happening, no, it's also the editing and the beautiful music, which is already among the best of the last 50 years, if not all time. But the most impressive thing about this scene was the acting. I love Anya Taylor-Joy - I said she's the best actress of all time and the best since Audrey Hepburn - forget everything I said, she's the best actress of all time. You can read so much in their eyes - you can't even read that much on the whole body of some actors. Then there's the acting of Harry Melling, a newcomer not to be underestimated who looks very old against Taylor-Joy, but still does a brilliant job. I love the medium for these moments. For me, "The Queen's Gambit" is already, after just two episodes, the best series of all time and a work that could be in my top 5 favorite films.
