Two FriendsThough known primarily as an actor, Louis Garrel has been conducting appreciable efforts behind the camera as well. After directing three short films, including a César-nominated Petit tailleur, and most recently La règle de trois, Louis Garrel expands upon his fascination of threes with his first feature length film, Two Friends (Les deux amis), in which he also stars. Based loosely on the French play The Moods of Marianne, Garrel's film finds professional movie extra Vincent (Vincent Macaigne) in frenzied love with Mona (Goldshifteh Farahani), who cannot and will not give in to his romantic advances due in part to her restrictive situation, which she keeps secret. She works behind a pastry counter by day, but every evening must return to prison for curfew, not unlike an incarcerated Cinderella. Vincent enlists his best friend, the caddish Abel (Louis Garrel), to help win her over or at least understand her cooling passion.

Do the films that scared us in our youth, from Texas Chainsaw Massacre to The Blair Witch Project - still get under the skin?
Spoilers for each of the movies mentioned in the assorted subheads lie within
Are scary movies as scary as they used to be? Did the movies that scared you as a child still scare you when you watched them as an adult?
As a very young child, my fear-reflex was helped along by my older cousins, who used to lock me in a room with films like The Amityville Horror and Poltergeist playing through a too-high-to-reach television. It was like being trapped in a PG version of Saw: “Want to play a game? Find a way to reach the VHS player and stop the Poltergeist tape before the clown pops out from under the bed, or be left with life-long phobias and mental instability.

Horrible Bosses was one of the best box office hits of 2011. A tight, well-written, well-performed, and hilarious comedy – the film hit that glorious sweet spot where all the necessary elements come together to create gold. Given that the movie recouped most of its budget in its opening weekend, it was not surprising to hear that a sequel was being planned – although fans were worried that another outing may burst that bubble of success by pushing the concept too far. How often can three guys clash so disastrously with unpleasant senior management? Those worries proved unfounded, as the plot for Horrible Bosses 2 takes that original concept, and spins it on its head – as detailed in the official information about the project:
“The follow-up to the 2011 hit comedy Horrible Bosses reunites Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis as everyone’s favourite working stiffs: Nick, Dale and Kurt.
“Jennifer Aniston (We...

From Robin Williams’ suicide to James Foley to the shooting death of Mike Brown and the ongoing tension in Ferguson, Missouri, that it inspired, it’s been a really crappy month. The idea that there’s always something bad going on seems to have reached new heights, obliterating the Rule of Three and morphing social media into a daredevil experience – stay current if you dare. In times like these we need moments of recalibration, feel-good experiences that allow us a reprieve from the negative. As movie fiends, film is the perfect safe-haven, or so one would think. During the mess of drama this week I started Googling feel-good movie lists and was shocked to see how many required the viewer to feel bad before they felt good (if at all). Lists included the melancholic Little Miss Sunshine, Robin Williams’ own dark suicide comedy World’s Greatest Dad, the Holocaust drama Schindler’s List, and...

So we all saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier. (Seriously, we all saw it.) And we’ve all had a good, long, thoughtful conversation about the deeper themes lingering under the surface of the paranoia-inducing, wiki-leaking, surveillance-state-exploding superhero sequel. But there’s a more obvious thing we need to address — a question hovering over the whole movie that remains unanswered. Captain America. Black Widow. Question mark?
To recap, with spoilers. At the start of Winter Soldier, Cap and Widow’s relationship has evolved a little since The Avengers. But only a little. They’re co-workers. Widow’s mildly concerned that...

Chicago – For a brief shining moment, it looked like the cast of 1999’s “American Pie” would be the break-out stars of the new millenium. Sadly, 13 years have passed and most of them haven’t fulfilled on their potential with a few never topping that first film, which is still a sweet, raunchy, comedy classic. Therefore, I’m sure most of the “Pie” kids were ecstatic that a fourth film, “American Reunion,” finally got off the ground, to be released on April 2nd, 2012. Before you catch up with them in a theater, catch up at home with the release of the first three films — the great “American Pie,” the decent “American Pie 2,” and the pretty-bad “American Wedding.”
American Pie
All three films have been given lavish treatment as Universal clearly thinks that the new movie is going to reignite interest in them either in a nostalgic generation or a new one.

Filmmaker Richmond Riedel, the producer, director, and writer of the award-winning film Target Practice, has optioned the motion picture rights to a screenplay called The Devoted, written by Eric Shapiro and Rhoda Jordan. Shapiro and Jordan co-produced the film Rule Of Three, which, like Target Practice, was released in 2010 by Big Screen Entertainment Group.
The Devoted chronicles the last day in the life of a fictional suicide cult. When one of the cult members begins to have second thoughts, the balance of power becomes disrupted, and as the group's final ritual grows near, the tension escalates. Earlier this month, a novel version of The Devoted, written by Eric Shapiro, was released by Ravenous Shadows, the new line of genre fiction helmed by NY Times Bestselling Author John Skipp.

Every once in a while you get lucky and are reminded why our genre is so great. If I sat around obsessing over every frame of Transformers I doubt I'd be able to contact Michael Bay and talk about why he chose to explore Bumblebee's inner strife.
And if I did, who'd really care? In our genre, it's pretty damned amazing that you can watch a film and with just a few polite keystrokes get in touch with the people who made it and discover that they're just as much film lovers as the rest of us. What follows is a pretty brief but very informative interview that writer/director Eric Shapiro was kind enough to indulge me with.

In her bid to become “not just another scream queen” with a short shelf life, actress Tiffany Shepis has stepped up her game in the last few years. Besides starring in and helping to produce the surprisingly smart horror/sci-fi sleeper The Frankenstein Syndrome (see interview here), the spunky actress has also racked up strong showcases in Eric Shapiro’s dark drama Rule Of Three and the Butcher Brothers’ bizarre The Violent Kind; contributes an amusing bit in the Night Of The Demons remake; and has the lead role in Marc Leland’s She Wolf Rising (see our last story here), a horror/comedy where Shepis plays a sardonic scream queen (talk about typecasting!). Read on for exclusive comments from Shepis and photos from the films…...

Best known for a plethora of low-budget direct-to-video scare flicks, scream queen Tiffany Shepis (Nympha, Nightmare Man, The Ghouls, Tromeo & Juliet, etc.) has now turned a corner in her career where she finds her name attached to genre films of growing quality and intelligence. Movies like the dark drama Rule Of Three (see feature here), the Butcher Brothers’ 2010 festival hit The Violent Kind and this year’s Arizona-lensed The Frankenstein Syndrome. Shepis spoke to Fango about (and we got exclusive pics from) the latter mad-scientist tale, written and directed by The Great American Snuff Film’s Sean Tretta.

Unlike slasher and splatter flicks where all the fear comes from the outside, in the more subtle psychological horror subgenre, terror tends to come from within. Rule Of Three, the psychological thriller directed by Eric Shapiro and co-written by Shapiro and lead actress Rhoda Jordan, is a film noir piece that shows what happens when the disturbing menace emerges from deep inside us. The film debuts on DVD today from Big Screen Entertainment, after a two-year festival run.

Also, Tracy becomes paranoid that the Rule of Three applies to celebrity deaths and that he'll be unlucky #3. That's what I wrote in my review for the first episode of season four and part of me wishes I could take it back solely because I'll now repeat myself by saying the...

Fango got the word that a new trailer has hit the web for Eric Shapiro and Rhoda Jordan’s Rule Of Three, the indie chiller that won Best Actor (Ben Siegler) at last year’s Fantasia Film Festival and Best Acting Performance for writer/star Jordan at Shriekfest. You can check out the preview below.
Rule Of Three follows three interconnected and nightmarish stories as they unfold at separate times in and around the same Los Angeles motel room. Shapiro and Jordan have signed the rights for the film over to Big Screen Entertainment Group, who most recently handled the release of Babysitter Wanted. “We had a great year in 2008,” Shapiro says, “taking Rule Of Three from Fango’s Weekend of Horrors to Fantasia and around the festival circuit. It’s exciting to have won support from such a strong company, especially given our film’s budget and extreme subject matter.

The small indie sleeper Rule Of Three—which has garnered praise at the likes of Montreal’s Fantasia (where star Ben Siegler won Best Actor) and Shriekfest (where co-star/co-writer Rhoda Jordan won Best Acting Performance)—has secured broadcast distribution overseas as a part of Hart D. Fisher’s American Horrors series.
Rule Of Three takes place in one single motel room at three different points in time, all interconnected, and follows Jon (Siegler) as he looks for clues regarding the disappearance of his daughter Lo (Jordan). At the same time, we witness her stay at the motel weeks before and the room’s previous happenings, which tragically pull everyone together. Rule Of Three also stars horror mainstay Tiffany Shepis, Nightmare On Elm Street 3’s Rodney Eastman and Hatchet actor Parry Shen.
American Horrors, a joint venture between Fisher’s Crime Pays Inc. and La’s Global Broadcasting & Syndication Inc.
