Although I might be on my own on this one, I didn't care for this episode of "Inside Number 9" as much as I have for the others in this run. I still think it was good, but just a little over familiar.
Six strangers, seemingly with nothing in common, each a record video blog for a variety of different reasons. Bill (Phil Davis) is recording an introduction for a dating club, following the death of his wife. Galen (Steve Pemberton) is a death row inmate in Louisiana being interviewed. Nadia (Maxine Peake) is telling a Bennett-eqsue story about life in the suburbs. Angel (Ionna Kimbook) is vlogging to her followers. Diana (Sandra Gayer) is performing Amazing Grace in a church. Finally, Aiden (Reece Shearsmith) is recording messages to his unborn daughter, who he doesn't think he'll see as he's dying of cancer.
I want to keep my reviews spoiler free, so I'll be vague from here. Though I didn't see the twist in the plot coming until the point it became apparent, I felt it was one that we've seen done before, in other films and shows. This is no mark against the execution of it in "Inside Number 9", indeed, few of the other goes at this story go to the lengths that this one does, to produce the connective tissue that interlocks the stories. Nor too, do many of the match the performances of Maxine Peake, who is capable of switching from demure to dead behind the eyes at a moment's notice, or Reece Shearsmith, who this time gets his chance to show his acting range.
I don't want to get too down on the episode, it's still brilliant. Just felt a little underwhelmed at the conclusion.
