Talking Heads meets Black Mirror
safenoe10 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Having just watched the recent revival of Talking Heads, I found Thinking Out Loud very compelling and cryptic viewing for sure. The clues start to be revealed with each monologue, and the end is quite horrifying. Not what I expected.

Ioanna Kimbook, who plays Angel, would be a prime candidate to play Meghan Markle in an upcoming season of the Crown.

Grace Under Pressure
southdavid3 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Although I might be on my own on this one, I didn't care for this episode of "Inside Number 9" as much as I have for the others in this run. I still think it was good, but just a little over familiar.

Six strangers, seemingly with nothing in common, each a record video blog for a variety of different reasons. Bill (Phil Davis) is recording an introduction for a dating club, following the death of his wife. Galen (Steve Pemberton) is a death row inmate in Louisiana being interviewed. Nadia (Maxine Peake) is telling a Bennett-eqsue story about life in the suburbs. Angel (Ionna Kimbook) is vlogging to her followers. Diana (Sandra Gayer) is performing Amazing Grace in a church. Finally, Aiden (Reece Shearsmith) is recording messages to his unborn daughter, who he doesn't think he'll see as he's dying of cancer.

I want to keep my reviews spoiler free, so I'll be vague from here. Though I didn't see the twist in the plot coming until the point it became apparent, I felt it was one that we've seen done before, in other films and shows. This is no mark against the execution of it in "Inside Number 9", indeed, few of the other goes at this story go to the lengths that this one does, to produce the connective tissue that interlocks the stories. Nor too, do many of the match the performances of Maxine Peake, who is capable of switching from demure to dead behind the eyes at a moment's notice, or Reece Shearsmith, who this time gets his chance to show his acting range.

I don't want to get too down on the episode, it's still brilliant. Just felt a little underwhelmed at the conclusion.

Decent episode, executed poorly
mrtanackqwertyuiop11 March 2020
Far from bad (the guy that gave this a 1/10, I'm talking to you) but not even close to the usually high standard of the rest of the series. The acting was mixed, the setup felt rushed as well as the twist. Simply sub par in comparison to the rest of the series. Still a decent watch regardless.

This was such a great episode. The set-up, the layout, the cast, the script. There is nothing that can be faulted. A great episode.

More "interesting" than "good"
jonathan9213 September 2021
It had a creative premise, and the way it was filmed sets it apart from the rest of the show so far. I really enjoyed it up til the twist ending, which felt a bit clunky and seemed to trivialize a lot of what came before. Still, loved the use of music in this episode, and overall the ride was an enjoyable one, even if the destination was underwhelming.

Up there with the best
mikegibb-6041814 March 2020
To my mind that was the highlight of a very sound series five. Not quite up to the standard of The Twelve Days of Christine (which is worthy of 11 out of 10) but not far short. I sat totally transfixed for thirty minutes and then spent the next twenty four hours dissecting what I had just witnessed. Very moving with a terrific twist which I certainly didn't see coming. And how anyone could possibly describe the performances of all the cast, especially the amazing Maxine Peake, as poor is completely beyond me. Ignore the few anti voices and revel in total class

Absolutely amazing.

How on Earth could the vlogs possibly link up, when you have two geniuses writing there's of course a way. I mentioned last week that I thought the episode had a tales of the unexpected vibe, I thought the same thing applied here also.

A piece of her mind? can she spare it? Sharp dialogue, unbelievable cleverness, is this the best series to date?

Unbelievable, incredible acting, Maxine Peake in particular was out of this world, but all were magnificent.

Chills!!!! I had chills watching it. 10/10

Maxine Peake is a Goddess. Incredibly woven story with chilling singing and beautiful layers. Underrated criminally

Another triumph of an episode
stuartpbottomley3 March 2020
Yes this type story has been done before. But what take some productions over 90 mins to make an impact, padding out the run time with pointless side stories. Here we get a short run time with none of it wasted . How long can Steve and Reese keep this high quality program making going time will tell, I hope we've still got years of excellent Inside no 9 to go

Too predictable
Kasitera3 March 2020
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Inside no 9. However, the concept in this episode has been done too many times. Thus it was predictable. Also the influencer character was simply awful to watch.

Predictable yes but....
balbip0112 May 2023
The featured review includes the line

'Also the influencer character was simply awful to watch'.

Wonderful! How that completely hit the mark. Ioanna Kmbooks performance hit the nail on the head, Yes completely awful to watch but you couldnt take your eyes off it as she disscects the world of influencers (you can buy all this stuff from my bag...) Complete with all the influencer sound bites, in the know abbreviations and other nonsense .

Like all series its going to have its weaker stories (stil worth an 8 to me) but this stand out character performance makes up for everything else. Great writing perfomrance and editing.

Episode 505

Warning: Spoilers
I guess I didn't see the twist coming initially, but it just did not feel special at all. I feel like we have been here so many times with Inside No. 9 that I was hoping for a bit more.

Predictable and somewhat offensive
lycopodium-154108 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Don't get me wrong- I am a big fan of No 9 and indeed everything that Reece and Steve have done. However I found this episode underwhelming. It had a good idea, but the blatant exposition at the end of the episode pulled this one down for me. Also the depiction of people with Multiple Personality Disorder as insane murderers is tired and offensive.

Boring Delivery
amymariasmith4 June 2022
One of my favourite things about this show is how seamlessly the twist unfolds - in this episode the narrator (therapist) spells it out far too clearly. The whole episode feels clunky, really not a good one this time.

Shameless rip-off of Identity and Shutter Island!
edfilmsuk16 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The concept and execution of this film is almost identical to the James Mangold thriller 'Identity' from 2003. The difference is that Identity, despite its longer runtime, pulls it off far better.

Everything from the seemingly unrelated characters, to the diagrams of the different 'personalities', the anagram of the names is directly stolen from Shutter Island (Andrew Laeddis = Edward Daniels)

Would have been quite enjoyable but can't help feeling a sense of shock at the level of plagiarism happening here!

Expected better from Pemberton and Shearsmith.
