"When kindness can cost you your life, it becomes like a miracle." Lionsgate has released another brand new 2024 release trailer for the movie White Bird, formerly known as White Bird: A Wonder Story. A sort of "spin-off" from the Wonder movie with Jacob Tremblay & Julia Roberts. Based on the graphic novel, it's a harrowing WWII survival story. The movie is about a boy named Julian who meets his French grandmother, who shares her story: how she, a young Jewish girl, was hidden by a family in a Nazi-occupied French village during World War II; how the boy she and her classmates once shunned became her savior and best friend. From Marc Forster (the director of Finding Neverland and Christopher Robin) White Bird, like Wonder before it, is an emotional story about how empathy for others can make a difference in the world. Starring Helen Mirren, Gillian Anderson, Bryce Gheisar, Ariella Glaser,...

2023 has been, broadly speaking, a very good year at the box office. The domestic total for the year will be at or near $9 billion — far exceeding 2022's $7.366 billion total, representing an increase of more than 20 percent year-over-year. More than that, the top three movies of the year, which are "Barbie" ($1.44 billion), "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($1.36 billion), and "Oppenheimer" ($953 million), were not sequels. It's the first time in decades that this has been the case. Unfortunately, the party is going to come to a screeching halt in January as the 2024 release calendar is a barren wasteland, at least for the first chunk of the year.
The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that the 2024 domestic box office could take a hit as large as $2 billion. That would be devastating, to put it lightly. Movie theaters have been operating on anything but stable ground since the pandemic arrived in 2020. The good news is...

Exclusive: Lionsgate’s follow-up to the $315M global grossing feature Wonder, White Bird, will be returning to the theatrical release calendar with a new date of Oct. 4, 2024.
The pic will be counterprogramming to Warner Bros.’ sequel on that date, Joker: Folie a Deux.
White Bird is from director Marc Forster off a screenplay by Mark Bomback, based on the book by Rj Palacio. The movie was previously dated for an Aug. 18 limited release and Aug. 25 expansion, but had to delay its opening to next year due to the actors’ strike. The movie stars Helen Mirren and Gillian Anderson.
In White Bird, Bryce Gheisar reprises his role as Julian, who has struggled to belong ever since he was expelled from his former school for his treatment of Auggie. To transform his life, Julian’s grandmother (Helen Mirren) finally reveals to Julian her own story of courage — during her youth in Nazi-occupied France,...

White Bird. The repeatedly delayed film White Bird, based on the 2019 graphic novel by R.J. Palacio, follows an elderly Jewish woman looking back on her youth in France during World War II, particularly the time she spent hiding from the Nazis. The framing is odd: She is telling this tale to impart a lesson to her grandson, a bully character from a different, earlier novel by Palacio, Wonder. Both stories are part of a wider fictive universe authored by Palacio, the “World of Wonder,” which comprises spinoff books, film adaptations, and merchandise, all branded with the poptimistic slogan/hashtag “Choose Kind.” A friendly schoolmate refusing to persecute White Bird’s protagonist for being Jewish is implicitly an example of “choosing kind,” divorced from any historically based understanding of solidarity or resistance to fascism. More problematically, White Bird has as its epigraph George Santayama’s famous quote “Those who can’t...

This year’s Lucca Comics & Games (Nov. 1-5) is set to end on a high note with a special fan screening of “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” one of the most anticipated launch events hosted by Europe’s largest pop culture meet.
The release of the prequel to the iconic saga will be handled by Rome-based Notorious Pictures, which takes over distribution duties, previously handled by Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures.
The dystopian sci-fi movie is set 64 years before the events of the first 2012 installment and follows young Coriolanus Snow’s rise to power as the tyrannical leader of Panem, including his relationship with tribute Lucy Gray Baird during the year of the 10th Hunger Games. The cast is toplined by Tom Blyth (“Billy the Kid”) and Rachel Zegler, starring alongside Hunter Schafer, Peter Dinklage and Jason Schwartzman, among others. Francis Lawrence is again at the helm.

Marc Forster has frequently demonstrated an ability to tastefully moderate the more manipulative or saccharine aspects of popular but somewhat blunt-edged source material, in bestseller screen translations like “The Kite Runner” and “A Man Called Otto.” That knack comes in handy once more with “White Bird,” a graceful adaptation of a YA graphic novel by R.J. Palacio. A “Wonder story” tangentially related to 2012’s “Wonder,” it may get some boost from the connection to that book’s successful 2017 film version with Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson.

Exclusive: For those awards strategists wondering whether stars from indie U.S. films can promote at the fall film festival troika, SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland says “We’re looking at that issue.”
“There might be a form of an interim agreement that we can make available for that purpose,” Crabtree-Ireland told us today at San Diego Comic-Con.
SAG-AFTRA Strike rules underscore that members “can participate in a film festival that has no known connection, such as sponsorship, to an AMPTP company, however you cannot promote work you did for a struck company at any film festival.”
After the guild cleared several starry indie movies and TV series to shoot during the actors strike, as they’re made by non-amptp companies, hope prevails among film festival organizers and personal publicists that exceptions will be made for those indie movies making their premieres at TIFF, Telluride and the Venice Film Festival.

Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers,” starring Zendaya, has been pulled from the Venice Film Festival, where it was to be the opening night film, due to the actors strike.
The R-rated “Challengers,” in which Zendaya stars as a tennis coach involved in a love triangle, had been planned to kick off the Venice Film Festival on Aug. 30 before opening in theaters Sept. 15. But with actors striking from working or promoting their films — including walking any red carpets — distributor MGM, which is owned by Amazon Studios, will instead open “Challengers” in theaters April 26 next year.
“After thoughtful consideration with our partners, and given the parameters that SAG-AFTRA has outlined for its membership, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw ‘Challengers’ from this year’s Venice International Film Festival,” MGM said in a statement Friday. “We look forward to celebrating the film when we can do so with our ensemble cast, director...

Challengers moves into 2024.
Edoardo De Angelis’ Comandante is the new Venice Film Festival opening selection on August 30 after MGM pulled Challengers starring Zendaya amid concerns over the ongoing Hollywood strikes.
SAG-AFTRA strike rules prohibit talent from promoting films by struck companies during industrial action. Without Zendaya on a red carpet and talking to press the studio felt the film would be better served by launching later and has pulled it from 2023 entirely.
Luca Guadagnino’s R-rated tennis romance had been set to open on September 15 after its Venice premiere and will now open on April 26 2024.

“Problemista” has hit a problem with its theatrical release.
Distributor A24 has officially delayed the August 4 premiere of Julio Torres’ film, which debuted at 2023 SXSW. A new release date will be determined later; the news comes after Amazon pushed back Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” and Lionsgate delayed the release of “White Bird.” Deadline first reported on the “Problemista” delay, which IndieWire confirmed.
Deadline first reported that A24 opted to release “Problemista” once the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved so writer/director/actor Torres and co-star Tilda Swinton could be available to do press promoting the indie film. The rollout was slated to begin with a limited release while Torres was doing a press tour with screenings and Q&As. The film will still play at a sold-out Outfest showcase on Saturday in Los Angeles.

Another 2023 theatrical release gets moved due to the SAG-AFTRA strike as MGM is pushing the Zendaya-led tennis romance Challengers to April 26. The R-rated pic from director Luca Guadagnino was scheduled to open stateside on September 15, working off the heat of its Venice Film Festival opening-night premiere. That world premiere is not happening now.
With Zendaya able to promote to her 200M social media followers as she’s one of the top 25 most followed stars on Instagram worldwide, this movie really needs her support to get her fanbase to cinemas. Further proof of Zendaya’s sway on social: The Challengers trailer has received over 150 million global views already and spurred 320 million stateside conversations. It’s the most-viewed trailer for an original film in its first 24 hours.

Borderlands is now set to bow on Aug. 9, 2024. The film hails from director Eli Roth, and also underwent additional photography from Deadpool filmmaker Tim Miller. Exclusive: Lionsgate is pushing the theatrical releases of this August’s White Bird: A Wonder Story and next year’s Dirty Dancing sequel from director Jonathan Levine due to the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike, we hear.
White Bird, the spin-off prequel to the studio’s 2017 box office smash Wonder, was set to launch limited on Aug. 18 and go wider on Aug. 25. It’s now undated for Q4 at the end of this year. That leaves the last weekend in August without a wide theatrical release, which isn’t that unusual for that point in summer. White Bird stars Helen Mirren and Gillian Anderson, and it’s the type of movie that really needs the push from its actors to raise it above the fray. Now it’s in the Oscar season corridor, which is a better spot than the dog days of August. Best to wait the strike out.

“Nothing in any future I see can replace the communal theatrical experience,” emphasized Lionsgate Motion Picture Vice Chair Adam Fogelson at the top of Lionsgate CinemaCon presentation, which closed out the 2023 Las Vegas confab this afternoon.
“Neither the advent of television or the advent of videotapes or the advent or DVDs or the advent of streaming platforms or a global pandemic can stop that,” he said told the crowd of exhibitors.
“As long as we do our part to please customers, we can all thrive,” Fogelson said emphasizing the studio’s release strategy for both tentpoles and audience specific movies, “the business can’t thrive on tentpoles alone.”

"You forget many things in life, but you never forget kindness." Lionsgate has debuted a brand new 2023 release trailer for the movie White Bird, formerly known as White Bird: A Wonder Story. This is a sort of "spin-off" from the Wonder movie with Jacob Tremblay & Julia Roberts. Based on the graphic novel of the same name, this is a harrowing WWII survival story. The movie is about a boy named Julian who meets his French grandmother; then it goes back in time as Grandmère tells her heartrending story: how she, a young Jewish girl, was hidden by a family in a Nazi-occupied French village during World War II; how the boy she and her classmates once shunned became her savior and best friend. From Marc Forster (the director of Finding Neverland and Christopher Robin) White Bird, like Wonder before it, is an emotional story about how empathy for others can...

Do you think cinematic universes and franchises are only reserved for superheroes, Vin Diesel, and horror films? Well, you’re mistaken. The latest growing franchise is growing out of the hit feel-good drama, “Wonder.” Now, we have the first sequel/spinoff, “White Bird.”
As seen in the trailer for “White Bird,” the film follows the story of a young boy, Julian, who was last seen bullying the protagonist of “Wonder.” After being expelled from his former school, Julian’s grandmother sits him down to tell him her story of growing up in Nazi-occupied France.

The next story in R.J. Palacio‘s Wonder saga is here, and if this trailer doesn’t move you, are you even human? Palacio’s Wonder inspired millions of readers to “choose kind” over cruelty. Lionsgate’s White Bird trailer reminds audiences to embrace kindness and learn to tolerate others regardless of heredity or station.
Marc Forster directs from Mark Bomback’s screenplay, which is based on the book by R.J. Palacio. In the White Bird trailer, kindness has the power to save lives. The story revolves around Wonder’s Julian Albans (Bryce Gheisar), Auggie’s antagonizing classmate who “left” Beecher Prep. In the film, Julian visits his Grandmère (Helen Mirren) from Paris and becomes transformed by her remarkable and unforgettable story of compassion and courage.

After a 2022 in which its presence at the box office was minimal, Lionsgate has roared back onto the charts this month. “John Wick: Chapter 4” earned a $73.5 million opening weekend, a franchise record and the studio’s best launch since November 2015. It’s the sort of success that Lionsgate motion picture group chairman Joe Drake thinks is going to keep building in the weeks ahead.
“It’s extremely rare that you see any franchise, four films in, get higher box office numbers with each new installment,” Drake told TheWrap. “We’ve been so floored by the reception for the film and we think we are in good shape to leg out for several weeks.”
But he’s not satisfied with just working the studio’s franchises, he told TheWrap in an interview.

Lionsgate had a quiet year at the box office. That’s about to change this weekend with the release of “John Wick: Chapter 4,” which is pacing to score the strongest opening weekend for the Keanu Reeves-Chad Stahelski action franchise and one of the strongest launches theaters have seen so far this year.
In many ways, the success of “John Wick” will be a test of Lionsgate’s upcoming slate of franchise sequels and an indicator of its future as an independent studio.
“John Wick 4” has a strong shot of passing the $171 million domestic/$327 million global total of “John Wick 3.” If it does, it will become Lionsgate’s highest grossing film since the “Hunger Games” series ended in 2015. Later this year, Lionsgate will bring back “Hunger Games” with the prequel, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” with sequels to “The Expendables” and “Saw” also set for release.

Exclusive: We hear that STX and Lionsgate are down the road on a new strategic deal that will see the latter distributing and marketing the former’s upcoming theatrical releases.
STX’s upcoming slate includes such titles as Guy Ritchie’s Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre; Michael Mann’s Ferrari; sequel Greenland: Migration; and Neil Burger’s The Marsh King’s Daughter, starring Daisy Ridley, Garrett Hedlund and Ben Mendelsohn.
The two companies became close during STX’s go-shop period after Najafi Companies announced a 173M agreement to acquire the studio back in December. STX opted to remain independent with Najafi and extra financing from Birch Grove LP and 777 Partners, thus divorcing from its merger with India’s Eros International as Deadline first reported.
STX will remain an independent studio outside the Lionsgate deal, with plans to produce 12-15 movies annually composed of theatrical and streaming titles.

Exclusive: Producer Todd Lieberman has formed Hidden Pictures and tapped Alex Young for the president post. Formed to generate film and TV projects, Hidden Pictures has entered a strategic film partnership with Lionsgate. The new company has gotten off the ground with a film rights deal in competition for Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel The Housemaid.
As part of its structure, Lieberman’s Hidden Pictures will have a development fund to secure, develop and package material in-house before bringing it to market. Aside from Lionsgate, its financial partners include Mint Mobile CEO David Glickman.
The venture follows Lieberman’s split with Mandeville partner David Hoberman. They were together 20 years with films that generated more than 4 billion in box office receipts, including Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast. Their TV credits include the USA Network series Monk.

Exclusive: Walt Disney Studios adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book is gearing up as Marc Forster is set to direct the pic. His producing partner Renée Wolfe will produce through their 2Dux2 banner along with Gil Netter. Ben Browning is also producing. David Magee was recently tapped to adapt the script.
The best-selling novel was published in 2008 and won several prestigious literary awards, including the American Newberry Medal. Gaiman’s source material tells the story of Nobody “Bod” Owen, a young boy who is raised by the ghosts and supernatural beings of a graveyard – including, the graveyard’s caretaker Silas – after his family is murdered.
Disney, Forster and Wolfe already had strong ties after working together on the Winnie Pooh live-action pic, Christopher Robin, which 2Dux2 also produced.
Forster is currently in post-production on two films he produced and he directed, White Bird, the sequel to the beloved coming of age story,...

As of June 30, we’re at the halfway point for 2022 — and for the Oscar eligibility year. There are dozens of possibilities coming up and many familiar elements — plenty of biopics, a reliance on fall film festivals, a heavy dose of streamers — but this could be an unusual year.
In the first six months of the year, A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick” seem likely. They would have been Oscar longshots a decade ago, but both should do well since voters’ tastes are changing.
Also notable this year: The roster of directors is far more inclusive, in terms of gender and race, than in the past.
While the upcoming crop includes past winners like James Cameron, Damien Chazelle, Alejandro Inarritu, Sam Mendes and Steven Spielberg, there are new hopefuls, including Chinonye Chukwu, Andrew Dominik, Sebastian Lelio, Sarah Polley and Gina Prince-Bythewood, to name a few.
