You can sometimes get what you want — even an attention-grabbing appearance by the separate-but-united Rolling Stones — when you’re Global Citizen and there is seemingly no global superstar too big to turn down “One World: Together at Home.” Saturday night’s prime-time show included turns from a Beatle, Paul McCartney, too, as well as currently mania-inspiring performers like Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Lizzo and the mutually sheltering Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello.
Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans has pulled off big, all-star charity projects before, including annual Central Park gigs, but nothing like pulling together eight hours of programming (the two-hour prime-time TV show was preceded by a six-hour web live-stream) in a matter of… we’ll let him say how many days. Variety spoke with him Sunday afternoon about waiting on a friend in the form of the Stones’ last-minute contribution, plus the trickiness of settling on a right tone amid the coronavirus crisis,...

Breaking news alert: Some time between the first prime-time coronavirus relief special three weeks ago (“Fox Presents the iHeart Living Room Concert for America”) and Saturday night’s “One World: Together at Home,” Elton John has gotten himself to a piano. Or a piano has gotten to him. The superstar on that earlier show that he’d been marooned without one when sheltering-in-place went into effect. It’d be nice to believe that, in the fine print of global lockdown orders, “getting a damn piano to Elton John” has belatedly been written in as an essential service.
John’s piano was the most spit-shined instrument you’ve ever seen, but not everything about his appearance was polished to a fault. As he sang “I’m Still Standing,” standing between him and a giant hedge was a large portable basketball hoop and a couple of balls. You might’ve hoped David Furnish...

The artists performing on Global Citizen’s “Together at Home” concert reached far and wide for thematically appropriate songs to sing, ranging from Stevie Wonder singing the late Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me” as a medley with “Love’s in Need of Love Today” to Lizzo singing Sam Cooke’s classic “A Change Is Gonna Come.”
Taylor Swift didn’t need to look any farther than her own latest album, “Lover,” for the song “Soon You’ll Get Better,” which was written for her mother, Andrea — who has been battling cancer for several years — but certainly applies to countless people praying for the recovery of loved ones affected by the coronavirus pandemic that the show is working to rally relief for.
Swift performed the song alone at the piano, seeming to mist up at times while singing.

Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” has practically become a hymn in the six decades since it was written, and it’s safe to say Lizzo took the song to church when performing it on Global Citizen’s “Together at Home” concert on Saturday night.
She actually kept it low-key for the first half of the song, but as the second chorus came round, people across the world probably exclaimed, “There she goes!” as she took the final verses and chorus into the stratosphere.
Lady Gaga, acting as a virtual cheerleader throughout the show from her Instagram story, was one of them, yelling, “You’re my queen, Lizzo! I love you.”
Lizzo was the most nominated performer at the 2020 Grammy Awards, taking home three trophies out of eight nominations for her breakthrough album “Cuz I Love You.” She topped Billie Eilish for pop solo vocal and also took...

Nearly 60 years into their collective existence, it’s rare for the Rolling Stones to do something musically that they haven’t really done before — but that certainly happened on Saturday night for their performance of their 1969 classic “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” on Global Citizen’s “Together at Home” concert.
Performing via a four-way split screen, the song started off with Mick Jagger singing and playing acoustic guitar; then joined by Keith Richards, also on acoustic; then Ronnie Wood on some stinging electric lead; and finally Charlie Watts, who drummed on a black box, but didn’t even pretend to be actually playing, hitting invisible cymbals somewhere in the region of an armchair to his right.
Obviously some if not all of the song was pre-recorded, but the Stones worked it for all it was worth — and showed off plenty of the stagecraft that the septuagenarian group...

The thing about standards is that it’s easy to do them badly — but that wasn’t the case on Saturday night when Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello teamed up for a cover of “What a Wonderful World,” which is probably best known in Louis Armstrong’s classic 1967 version.
The two of them sat closely together behind a piano, with Shawn playing and Camila working her Fifth Harmony hand gestures. And while they were solid when trading verses, the song really lifted when they harmonized on the choruses, his alto holding down the low end while her higher voice lofted the melody high. The two young singers did a respectful and professional version of a song that might be older than the two of them put together.
While “Together at Home” is not a traditional fundraising event, the Global Citizen website identifies several ways viewers can get involved:
