“With the new world order you are going to see much lower budgets,” Miramax TV boss Marc Helwig has predicted, as he forecast the market for first-look deals will “further contract.”
A recent Miramax show for Netflix UK cost somewhere between £5M ($6.1M) and £7M ($8 .6M), a far cry from the blank cheque days of past years, Helwig revealed.
“We see opportunity internationally at significantly lower budgets and in the U.S. I think we will see budgets contracting in the way that the landscape is contracting,” he told a Mia Market panel titled The Producer’s Role. “With the new world order you are going to see lower license fees and much lower budgets.”
Helwig was speaking in Rome, Italy at the film and TV industry event Mia.

One of the most impressive signs of the MCU’s might occurred early in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. As Cap and Black Widow make their way through a ship held captive by pirates, they’re stopped by the ring leader: Batroc the Leaper. To comic book fans, Batroc was one of the goofier characters in Cap’s rogues gallery, a Frenchman straight out of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, endowed with the power of jumping really well. But in The Winter Soldier, Batroc was played by UFC fighter Georges St-Pierre, who proceeded to have a really cool action sequence with Cap.
“If that’s what the MCU can do with Batroc, imagine what they’ll do with Crossbones?” we all thought. Introduced in Captain America #359 as the Red Skull’s enforcer during writer Mark Gruenwald’s legendary run, Crossbones quickly established himself as a formidable counter to Cap,...

Marvel Studios is never shy to bring back a fan-favorite character or give an old favorite a sequel. Over 24 years and 31 movies, the only characters that have been officially retired are a few tentpoles like Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). But according to Disney CEO Bob Iger, the studio’s upcoming slate is all about going to be introducing fresh faces and less about bringing back old stalwarts.
During Disney’s Thursday presentation at Morgan Stanley’s 2023 Technology Media and Telecom Conference, Iger spoke about the future of Marvel at the company. During the next five years, Iger said Disney would reevaluate whether certain characters need sequels, or need to be brought back at all.
“Marvel — there were 7,000 characters, there are a lot more stories to tell,” he said. “What we have to look at at Marvel is not necessarily the volume of Marvel storytelling,...

The cast for Marvel's Captain America: New World Order is growing by one. Atlanta and Space Jam: A New Legacy's Xosha Roquemore will be part of the ensemble playing — and you surely should have seen this coming – a character that is a mystery for now.
New World Order sees Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson as Cap, following the events of The Falcon And The Winter Solider, which saw him wrangling with whether he even wanted to take over after Chris Evans' Steve Rogers handed him the shield at the end of Avengers: Endgame.
He'll star alongside Harrison Ford (who takes over the role of Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross from the late William Hurt) and Tim Blake Nelson as The Incredible Hulk's Samuel Sterns (Aka The Leader), plus Danny Ramirez as Falcon's Joaquin Torres, who looks set to inherit the Falcon role from Wilson and Carl Lumbly as the show's Isiah Bradley,...

The cast of ‘Captain America: New World Order’ has been revealed at Marvel’s D23 Expo presentation. Anthony Mackie, who has played superhero Sam Wilson, aka the Falcon, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” is leading the film as the new Captain America for the first time.
The cast of the fourth ‘Captain America’ movie will also include Shira Haas as Sabra, Tim Blake Nelson as The Leader, as well as Danny Ramirez and Carl Lumbly, who appeared in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ series, as Joaquin Torres and Isaiah Bradley, respectively, reports Variety.
Nelson’s The Leader was last seen in the 2008 film “The Incredible Hulk” as Samuel Sterns, beginning his transformation into the iconic Hulk villain.
As the “New World Order” team took the stage, director Julius Onah called the film a “paranoid thriller.”
Mackie raved about the project, saying: “I’m nervous!

Back at Comic-Con, Disney & Marvel Studios revealed that a Thunderbolts movie would be hitting theatres on July 26th, 2024, and now, at D23, we’ve gotten an official cast list. Sebastian Stan leads the adventure as The Winter Soldier and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, aka the new Black Widow. Her adopted dad, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, is along for the ride, as is Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster, but the rest of the team is where it gets really interesting. Wyatt Russell’s John Walker (aka US Agent) from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and Hannah John Kamen’s Ghost from Ant-Man and the Wasp make up the rest of the team. At the D23 panel, Stan joked about Winter Soldier is the most stable member of the group.
In the comics, the Thunderbolts are a team of anti-heroes consisting of mostly reformed supervillains.

We're 29 movies into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and we are bursting at the seams when it comes to superheroes. So why not shake things up by putting villains front and center? Since it worked so well for "Loki," Marvel Studios has decided to bring some baddies to the big screen with "Thunderbolts." And after months of speculating about who will fill out this supervillain roster, we finally have some answers.

Anthony Mackie and the stars of Captain America: New World Order got a warm welcome at D23, with a number of new and old MCU actors officially announced to return to the fold.
Tim Blake Nelson, who last appeared in 2008’s Incredible Hulk, will return as The Leader. Carl Lumbly is back as original super soldier Isaiah Bradley after playing him in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Danny Ramirez returns as Joaquin Torres, while MCU newcomer Shira Haas will play Israeli hero Sabra.
Mackie has played Sam Wilson since 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, spending much of that time as the hero The Falcon in films such as Captain America: Civil War (2016). But by the end of Avengers: Endgame (2019), it was clear that Wilson would eventually step into the role of Captain America after Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) gave him his shield.

Odds are, most people know Julius Onah for directing "The Cloverfield Paradox," the third entry in the "Cloverfield" franchise and a film that was infamously surprise-dropped on Netflix right after Super Bowl Lii ended in 2018. I seem to be among the rare people who actually kind of liked the movie, though I also won't deny it's clearly an original sci-fi thriller that got messily re-tooled as a "Cloverfield" flick during its development.
If all you know Onah for is his "Cloverfield film, then you might have been a tad confused when Marvel Studios hired him to direct the fourth "Captain America" movie, "Captain America: New World Order." The sequel will pick up with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) at some point after the events of "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier," as the former Falcon continues to settle into his role as the new Star-Spangled Avenger. Stephanie Pratt blasted her brother and fellow The Hills alum Spencer Pratt on Friday, referring to him as one the most “poisonous” people she knows while also criticizing her parents for “living in denial.”
“I have protected people over the evil things they have done – & I’m tired of it- tired of my parents living in denial. Time 2 tell the truth,” Pratt began in a Thursday night tweet.
“Will someone adopt me I need a new family,” Pratt then tweeted early Friday morning.
It became clearer who the online rant was directed to when she responded to another comment on the social media platform.

14-year-olds Alec Atkins, Malcolm Brickhouse and Jarad Dawkins make up the metal band Unlocking the Truth. Though they started out playing to Times Square crowds, they eventually acquired a manager, a huge record deal, and became the youngest band to ever play Coachella. Luke Meyer’s music documentary “Breaking a Monster” follows the boys’ rise to fame and the troubles they face as they struggle with early adulthood and the pressures of stardom. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Yikes. What a terrible weekend we just had, not only for the new movies released but also for the Weekend Warrior’s predictions. Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks’ Sully won its second weekend in a row with just under $22 million, but as far as the new movies, neither Lionsgate’s Blair Witch nor Universal’s Bridget Jones’s Baby did very well, putting the last nail in the coffin (hopefully) for sequels/remakes trying to play upon nostalgia that just isn’t there. (Good luck to the Rings movie opening next month!) Blair Witch ended up with $9.6 million to take second place and both Bridget Jones’s Baby and Oliver Stone’s Snowden ended up with around $8 million, so...

The much hyped debate tonight between CNN’s Piers Morgan and radio host Alex Jones, one of the men behind the White House petition to deport the British host, wasn’t much of a debate but lived up to its billing as riveting television of the trainwreck variety. Morgan could barely ask a question over Jones who came armed with statistics and blew up two minutes into the interview, pointing his finger at Morgan. “I’m here to tell you — 1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms! It doesn’t matter how many lemmings you have out there on the street begging for them to have their guns taken. We will not relinquish them. Do you understand?” Jones later went on a personal attack against Morgan and his alleged involvement in the Britain’s phone hacking scandal. “Why don’t you get back and face the charges for the hacking scandal?...

While there have been many films riffing on reality tropes in the last several years, few have been as cleverly conceived and entertainingly executed as Andrew Neel’s debut fiction film, King Kelly. Set in the world of amateur webcam porn, the film depicts a monstrously fascinating Tracy Flick for our oversexualized social media age. Played ferociously by Louisa Krause, Kelly is a high-school student who runs a profitable one-woman porn empire from her suburban bedroom, with her parents none the wiser. Stripping on cam, uploading details of her everyday life and ruling over her chat room with a gonzo glee, Kelly embodies oversharing capitalist narcissism.
Taking place during one 24-hour span, King Kelly has a speedy plot involving a bag of misplaced drugs which Kelly is forced to recover by an irate dealer. She enlists her friend Jordan (Libby Woodbridge) as well as one of her pay-channel subscribers, a...

There are conspiracy theorists and then there is Alex Jones. The kind of right-wing, sort-of-conservative, not-really-libertarian, alarmist radio show host has turned tin-foil-hat-wearing speculation into a viable business model, and continues to find any and every opportunity to weave together the barest strands of logic into iron-clad proof that the New World Order is upon us.
His latest target? Ridley Scott's "Prometheus." In his latest screed, Jones claims to have landed an early draft of the script that reveals that the sci-fi film is actually, secretly, about "the deepest secrets of the Illuminati mystery religion." Hoo boy...Anyway, if you can tolerate Jones' ear-pulverizing voice, watch below (we couldn't make it past the first couple of minutes). It's no secret that Film Junk has a few documentary fans on staff and every year we try and highlight some of the stand out non-fiction films. Although The Cove and Anvil! The Story of Anvil made some appearances on our year end lists -- along with a few others on our end of decade list -- we didn't really get a chance to write up any doc specific lists, so I figured I'd share some of the love The Documentary Blog has been spreading over the past week. Below you'll find my top 10 docs of 2009 followed by my top 50 documentaries of the decade. Also, I put together a collection of some acclaimed non-fiction filmmakers (including Joe Berlinger, Sarah Price and Jeff Feuerzeig among others) who have shared their picks for best of the decade as well! You can check that list out here [1]. Until then, have a look below...

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. Judy Garland’s Dorothy is charming as ever, and the entire cast: Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch, are all stellar. Four disc set bonuses include: Sing-along track; Documentaries and featurettes; Two 1914 silent films produced by Oz author L. Frank Baum, based on his stories...

Luke Meyer and Andrew Neel’s doc “New World Order” premiered at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival. The film is a behind the scenes look at the underground anti-globalist movement. This growing movement targets the annual Bilderberg conference, and the 9/11 attacks as focal points in the alleged global conspiracy. Alex Jones, a celebrity radio host, and underground cult hero, is the main character of the film. The film chronicles Alex, and …...

The documentary "New World Order" is bizarro journalism -- instead of digging up and making sense of true information, it tracks half a dozen boring conspiracy theorists spouting balderdash and makes no effort to check out their cuckoo claims.
The wackjobs, who include stentorian radio talker Alex Jones and five other sad sacks, wander the world organizing rallies about how 9/11 was an inside job, trying to investigate the international Bilderberg Group conference of global muckety-mucks and fretting that they're being followed. Many of them are Ron Paul fans.

We're all for getting out in the summertime, but there might not be anything more refreshing than cooling off in a movie theater... or seeing a movie in the comfort of your air-conditioned home on demand, on DVD, or online... or better yet catching a classic on the big screen at a nearby repertory theater. With literally hundreds of films to choose from this summer, we humbly present this guide to the season's most exciting offerings.

The reviled September 11th "truthers" are the folks you see in Manhattan's Union Square on weekends, insisting that the tragedy was not the work of Islamic extremists, but rather an "inside job" - a conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of government, big business, and the "global elite." Few thinking people credit their ravings, and rightfully so: they're ridiculous. Some go further and unload massive amounts of contempt on the conspiracy mongers, on the theory that what they do is an insult to the people who lost and risked their lives on September 11th and in its aftermath. Still others - such as one kind soul we see in New World Order, Luke Meyer and Andrew Neel's excellent new documentary about the subculture - plead with these people to do something more constructive with their lives.

From fantasy role-play gamers to conspiracy theorists? The most recent documentary by filmmakers Luke Meyer and Andrew Neel, New World Order, examines folks who are really, really dedicated to exposing a secret worldwide conspiracy. It had its world premiere at SXSW last Friday night and screened again this morning, in advance of its debut via IFC's on demand service (available on cable and satellite systems) next month.
But there's no need to feel left out if you missed the SXSW screenings. The duo's previous, full-bore colloboration, the fabulous Darkon, is just waiting for you to stream it free at Snag Films. Darkon won the Documentary Feature Audience Award at SXSW in 2006, and it's no wonder why. It examines folks who are really, really dedicated to fantasy role-playing games, the kind where the players create alter-egos, make their own costumes, and act out elaborate scenarios. The group has been active since...

A self-admitted lover of armchair philosophy, nonfiction filmmaker Andrew Neel prefers questions to answers. “Present day cinema, indie documentaries included, has devolved into thesis-driven filmmaking; people want a conclusion walking out the door. I think that’s the death of cinema. "When I leave a film that I feel is really good, I leave with lots of complicated questions that I can’t always answer, that I don’t feel comfortable answering,” he explains. In studying the little understood culture of political conspiracy theorists, Neel, along with longtime collaborator and co-director Luke Meyer, engages with New World Order several of these uncomfortable questions, the most unnerving of w ...

I suppose you never appreciate your hometown as much as when out-of-towners spout out about its greatness. That's the way it is in Austin. I Do live in the best city on earth. Especially during SXSW!
MoonThis film has two things going for it before it even begins. 1) Its star, Sam Rockwell, is a talented, sometimes underrated, actor, and 2) it's a sci-fi flick, full of cool shots of moon rovers with the big, blue earth in the background, talking computers, life endangerment and extraterrestrial mysteries.
Sometime in the future, Sam Bell (Rockwell) is just finishing up a three-year contract for a mining operation on the moon. Alone. Or so it seems. After recovering from an injury, the result of an apparent hallucination, Sam encounters another man on the moon: himself. Is one of them an hallucination? A clone? Is this Hal-esque computer (called Gertie here with voice work by Kevin Spacey...

By delving into the personal lives of conspiracy theorists and allowing them to speak for themselves, New World Order asks the viewer to look at them as actual human beings instead of the nutjobs they sometimes appear to be. Filmmakers Luke Meyer and Andrew Neel previously followed fantasy role-playing gamers in Darkon, and New World Order is cut from the same cloth: skillfully assembled and surprisingly absorbing.
The documentary will have its world premiere at South by Southwest tomorrow, March 13, and will screen again on Tuesday, March 17, before premiering on demand (via various cable and satellite systems in the Us) on IFC Free on April 16, 2009.
I was initially very resistant to the subject matter. Radio talk show host Alex Jones stridently screams into a microphone in Austin, Texas, and I rolled my eyes. College student Luke Rudowski talks quietly and earnestly in Brooklyn, New York, and I shook my head.

SXSW is one of my favorite festivals of the year as it showcases some of the best and most innovative real independent films, and with this host of world premiers, it's also playing alot of Sundance material as well as genre fare from all over the world, many of which we've covered heavily in these pages.
From the Sundance lineup, we have films like Moon, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, You Won't Miss Me, Grace, and Humpday, among others.
For the world genre material we've covered, there's Lake Mungo, The Square, Zift, and Awaydays.
I think you get the point that lots of great looking film will be playing. I'll leave a bit of the exploration to you..
Lineup after the break.
