As always, shows have been canceled this year and shows have been renewed. One critically acclaimed program that still seems to be in limbo is “Our Flag Means Death.” A comedic re-imagining of the not-so-notorious “Gentleman Pirate” Stede Bonet, the series finds the 18th Century amateur swashbuckler, portrayed by Rhys Darby, finding himself as he battles other pirates and tries to command a very queer crew in the Caribbean. Oh, and working through the ups and downs of a romantic relationship with the one and only Blackbeard, played by Taika Waititi.

Meryl Streep has won Oscars, Emmys, a bevy of Golden Globes and multiple SAG Awards. She was awarded the AFI Life Achievement Award, a Kennedy Center Honor and even the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama. If there’s an award, Streep has probably won it. But there’s a prize that has eluded her all these years: the Grammy. This year she received her seventh nomination from the recording academy. Will she finally take the trophy home?
This year she’s up for Best Audio Book, Narration and Storytelling Recording for “Big Tree,” the audio book recording of Brian Selznick‘s middle-grade adventure novel. She was previously nominated five times for recording children’s projects: “The Velveteen Rabbit,” “The Tale of Peter Rabbit,” “The Tailor of Gloucester,” “The One and Only Shrek” and “Charlotte’s Web.” And she has one musical nomination for her contributions to the “Mamma Mia!

Nadia Hallgren remembers exactly how her day was going when she received a phone call about making a documentary about former First Lady Michelle Obama. “I was having a pretty normal day about a year-and-a-half ago until the phone rang. [Priya Swaminathan] tells me that Michelle Obama is getting ready to go on this worldwide book tour and that they were floating this idea of documenting it,” says Hallgren in our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above). The people at Higher Ground Productions were looking for someone who could handle several tasks including directing and cinematography. Still, it was a while before she actually got to sit down with Obama. “I had to have a few more calls before I was actually in front of the former first lady a few weeks later.”
“Becoming,” which is currently streaming on Netflix, follows Obama for her book tour across the U.

“SpringHill Entertainment makes the shows LeBron and I want to watch. We look at every project as a way to connect with our community and ask ourselves if it will entertain and empower them. When Nadia Hallgren, director of the Michelle Obama documentary “Becoming” described hearing the former First Lady talk about her love of jazz it caused Hallgren to immediately think of Kamasi Washington. “He’s a contemporary artist who also has this timeless sound to his music,” she told IndieWire earlier this year.
Now, audiences can learn a bit more about Washington’s score for the Netflix documentary in his own words. In a video released exclusively to IndieWire in anticipation of the upcoming Emmy awards, Washington breaks down how he conjured up the emotion and represented Obama through the power of music.
Washington says he attempted to channel his “innermost Michelle Obama” and focus on music she would listen to through her headphones. “This is such a personal story,” Washington says in the video. “So I was trying to create music that reflected on her.”

The Black Lives Matter movement has become even larger and more important than ever following the death of George Floyd on May 25th. Floyd was suffocated during an arrest when officer Derek Chauvin placed a knee on his neck for nearly 9 minutes despite desperate pleas for breath. The tragic murder has resulted in massive protests in all 50 states in the Us with the aim of holding law enforcement accountable and eliminating police brutality. It’s even spread across the globe to various other countries both in solidarity and to fight against brutality within their own police forces.
Now, many celebrities are a taking stand alongside their fellow citizens, while several big companies and platforms are making their stance clear as well. Among those companies is Netflix, who’ve recently created a special Black Lives Matter section on their service to bring more insight to viewers and help elevate the black experience.

Netflix launched a “Black Lives Matter” collection of more than 45 titles on Wednesday, including movies, TV series and documentaries.
The new category includes Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods,” Ava DuVernay’s film “13th” and miniseries “When They See Us,” and the Kerry Washington-led play-turned-movie, “American Son,” among dozens of other titles.
“When we say ‘Black Lives Matter,’ we also mean ‘Black storytelling matters,'” the streaming service said in a statement tweeted Wednesday. “With an understanding that our commitment to true, systemic change will take time – we’re starting by highlighting powerful and complex narratives about the Black experience. When you log onto Netflix today, you will see a carefully curated list of titles that only begin to tell the complex and layered stories about racial injustice and Blackness in America.”

Ten years ago, Roger Ross Williams became the first African American director to win an Oscar, for his short documentary “Music by Prudence.” He thought that would mark a turning point in his career. “I did naively think that all the doors would be open for me — that this was my calling card for the big time,” Williams said in a phone interview last week. “Nothing happened. No one called.”
Instead, Williams said, he found it even harder to get his first feature made. He finished the Sundance-competing documentary “God Loves Uganda” in 2013 after years of fundraising challenges. “If I was a white filmmaker who won an Academy Award for my short film — and I know some — opportunities would have come to me,” he said. “I feel like it took me a really long time to prove myself to the industry.”

The big new movie of the week is VOD release “Scoob!” (Warner Bros.). All three VOD charts list the animated reboot at #1 for numbers of transactions (not revenue).
Warners had intended to release the Hanna Barbera feature in theaters, but moved it swiftly to Pvod where it clicked instantly, even faster than the April 10 Pvod launch for “Trolls World Tour” (Universal), which has remained high on VOD charts; three weeks ago it had been rented more than 95 million times in the U.S. With this apparent success, Warners Bros. might be expected to release some results, but unlike the theatrical box office, there is no established system for revealing immediate numbers.
Josh Trank’s “Capone” (Vertical), starring a cigar-chomping Tom Hardy as the ultimate gangster, was released last Tuesday at $9.99 (priced higher than the standard VOD release) and ranked as high as #2 on iTunes before settling there at #4 as well as FandangoNOW.

Producers behind the Terry Crews micro-budget drama “John Henry” are taking a victory lap this week, as their film has found an exhilarating second life and wide viewership on Netflix.
In a period that saw dominance from the second season of the Christina Applegate series “Dead to Me,” and stiff feature competition from the Michelle Obama documentary “Becoming” and the continued reign of Chris Hemsworth’s “Extraction,” the Crews film stood tallest — rating as the number one movie on Netflix this Wednesday, according to the platform’s own top ten list.
“John Henry” comes from debut writer-director Will Forbes, and producers Maurice Fadida, Eric B. Fleischman and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones. UTA Independent Film Group sold the project to L.A.-based Saban Films last year, which bowed in a quiet limited theatrical run in January.
Early this week, Fadida and Fleischman noticed only in browsing the Netflix app that their film had become available.

During the past few years, Kamasi Washington has found himself in places a jazz musician never would have expected to be. With the release of his aptly named 2015 triple LP, The Epic, the L.A. saxophonist and bandleader was deemed the genre’s next big thing. So there he was, in the studio with Kendrick Lamar and St. Vincent, or sharing a bill with Lamar and D’Angelo at a festival in Australia. Not to mention the time Herbie Hancock previewed some of his upcoming album for Washington. “He was like,...

Movie fans focused on VOD value this week — an easy choice, with no new major releases. (That will change in a few days with the Warner Bros. original family title “Scoob!” at $19.99.) Sony’s “Bloodshot” opened the last weekend theaters operated, became a $19.99 premium VOD offering a few weeks later, and last Tuesday it dropped to $5.99. It now stands in the top three for all of our reported charts, including #1 at Amazon Prime, and #2 at FandangoNow which ranks by amount paid, not transactions.
“I Still Believe” dropped its prices to $5.99 this week, and their chart placements improved. This flags a potential issue: How many people will get used to holding off for a few weeks, in exchange for seeing the price drop by 60 percent or more? Many of these viewers were content to wait three months after initial theatrical play, so delaying rental for a month might not be a tough choice.

Netflix has set its latest documentary project from Barack and Michelle Obama – a film about the former First Lady on nationwide memoir tour.
Becoming, which is directed by Nadia Hallgren, will take viewers behind the scenes as Michelle Obama travelled to 34 cities on the tour for her book. It will be released on May 6.
It is the latest film since the former President and his wife signed a landmark deal with the streaming service in 2018. The pair, who run Higher Ground Productions, were involved in Crip Camp, the Nicole Newnham and James LeBrecht-directed film about a summer camp for teens with disabilities.
