It has some good elements, but the writing frusturatingly works against them.
IonicBreezeMachine12 February 2021
Set roughly a year after the events of Silence of the Lambs, Clarice Starling has become an object of media fascination and placed very much on the FBI's backburner riding a desk. When a new string of what looks to be serial killings emerges. Attorney General, Ruth Martin, uses her sway to bring Starling into the FBI's VICAP unit.

Clarice marks yet another attempt to mine the Thomas Harris novels for television following the cult hit Hannibal which re-imagined elements of Red Dragon and Hannibal very much becoming its own interpretation that stood on its own from the Anthony Hopkins films. Clarice takes a different approach due to legal disputes between MGM and the de Laurentis family over ownership of elements from the Harris novels and because of that overt references cannot be made to certain characters such as Hannibal Lector (though in the opening therapy session they do make a passing reference to Starling's previous "psychiatrist"). The show is essentially two shows competing for attention. On one hand, it's a psychological horror that looks at the lingering effects of working with violence and becoming known for association with that violence, and on the other it's a formula procedural fitting well in line with the plethora of CSI and Criminal Minds esque shows that stuff CBS' schedule to the gills.

Rebecca Breeds as Clarice Starling is quite good in the role, and while she doesn't quite escape the long shadow cast by Jodie Foster's Oscar winning performance, she does a decent job given the weight she's asked to carry. Without having Hannibal Lector (or some equivalent) to act as a foil for Starling the show does certainly does feel like it's missing something, but the writers do try to create a different beast for her to ace off against with a combination of her PTSD and the stigma that her colleagues at the FBI and the tabloids are all to eager to remind her of.

While some of the material is approached reasonably well, others are not as well handled. The behavior from Starling's FBI colleagues (particularly a bad taste prank involving lotion that should result in a trip to HR if not outright firing) is done so over the top that it feels at odds with the gritty realism both the movie and the show try to convey. This is where the show finds itself working against its traditional procedural format as many characters surrounding Starling feel more suited to traditional procedurals than they do the Thomas Harris world. The opening plot in the show is also a massive cheat as its one of those procedural plots where everything is made to look one way when in reality its another. It's a frusturating revelation especially when finding out the "why" because a plan this convoluted and over the top just doesn't belong here.

The Silence is Over is a frustrating pilot because it feels like there's a good show to be had, but it also feels like its handicapping itself by weighing itself down with police procedural baggage. The serial killer well has been tapped for TV many times and unless you go the direction of something like Hannibal or Mindhunter where you break from the traditional approach, it's all but guaranteed it'll be an uphill battle to make your show stand out. In terms of movie based TV shows it doesn't reach the levels of Fargo or Westworld, but it also isn't awful either. It's a slightly above average procedural that tries to be a little more but at the moment isn't. Maybe it'll get better with development, but who knows?

A little rough around the edges, but it has potential. Don't write it off yet.

Warning: Spoilers
What stuck out immediately were the casting choices. They did well with the girl who portrays Clarice, I swear she's the spitting image of Jodie in some scenes.

The actor who's being slept on, imho, is who they got to play Ardelia Mapp. I swear she captures the inflection, vocal quirks and mannerisms of the original actress so well. It's actually incredible.

Cudlitz is almost unrecognizable as Paul Krendler which shows off his range. As of right now Krendler seems to be a layered character. Has he really let go of his grudge against Clarice for turning him down, and is trying to remain as professional as he can despite the awkward tension between them, and the politics of the FBI? We shall see.

I wasn't bothered by the nostalgia, I thought the recreations were pretty decent for television production values.

There are a few things that worry me. I fear this show will try to emulate Hannibal wherein we watch the characters slip into nihilism and moral decay. Silence of The Lambs had levity, it wasn't all dark and depressing.

I also don't want this to become like Criminal Minds, because there's only so much Clarice can take with her ptsd.

I'm also on the fence about Catherine Martin. On the one hand, it makes sense contextually for her to have lost a lot of weight since she attributes that as the cause of her victim hood. On the other, I'm worried this is just the Hollywood machine at work not wanting plus sized actors because of sexist beauty standards.

Overall I give the pilot and the show a 6.5. Hopefully my rating will increase.

Complete Shift
parkerjo-8151412 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Silence of the Lambs is, in my opinion, the best movie ever made. I was extremely excited for this show, however I managed my expectations. This episode was pretty much what I expected.

The lead actress is amazing. And I'm sure the supporting cast will prove their worth as the season goes on.

The problem comes in the writing. Early in the episode, bodies are discovered. A new serial killer may be terrorizing Washington. However, it is revealed that the murders are made to look like serial killings to cover up a companies dealings with whistleblowers.

From a writing stand point, this makes no sense. Clarice Starling is not a detective. She is not a hard core investigator. She works in Behavioural Sciences. She studies the mind of a killer. Why would they have it be the work of a company? In this way, Clarice is essentially useless.

Slow, But Good
Littleman9513 February 2021
Just to let you know, I've never watched or read something about this series, this is the first one for me that is in Clarice world.

Plot: well, aside the fact that it was a little bit slow, the story is well narrated and interesting. Let's see if it will take off. I found a pair of situations that were quite absurd/force. Let's hope that they were just to start this show.

Actress and Actors & Acting: I guess that is too early to say something about this topic, but in my opinion Rebecca Breeds (even she has a quite dull voice tone, it does not give emotions), Michael Cudlitz, and Lucca De Oliveira they all did a good job. Let's see if this first hunch of mine will be right or wrong.

Soundtrack: every song in this episode was good, nothing was out of tune.

Conclusions: a slow start but there is hope

okay start
Calicodreamin2 March 2021
Not a bad start, establishes the timeline from the movie and introduces the main characters. The storyline is interesting but its unclear if there will be a different crime each episode or not. Acting was decent. The "flashbacks" to appear dark/edgy didn't always work.

why do they keep filming like this
kokomo12315 February 2021
This has high production quality but it is still laughable. a junior specialist finds and catches a killer in a couple of minutes and their boss is not happy about it. for how many decades we have to watch this cliche?! and is there really such high demand for superheroes of all kinds?

I smell a great pilot episode and recipe is slowly simmering on the stove with Clarice
Ed-Shullivan12 February 2021
Be patient folks. This is not a feature film but the pilot episode of a new crime/mystery TV series. All good recipes are cooked slowly and we have to wait with great anticipation and some hunger pains as the smell of a good dinner wafts through our households before we get to taste any of it.

I for one liked this the pilot episode that aired on February 11th, 2021, which was used to outline who FBI agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) is, with snippets exposed of what she previously went through with her first big capture and kill of serial killer Wild Bill before she is called back into front line action by her new boss Ruth Martin (Jayne Atkinson).

Clarice is struggling being in the field once again, and she has little trust of any of her fellow FBI agents, and especially her direct Supervisor, Paul Krendler, (Michael Cudlitz) who tells her in no uncertain terms, speak only when you are told to speak. It doesn't take long in this pilot episode for the bodies to start piling up and a new whodunit series is born. If viewers are expecting from this TV series as great a film as the 1991 film Silence of the Lambs, then don't bother watching.

This one hour TV series has that required suspense, mystery and good writing that I believe will allow it to grow on us just like a new favorite home cooked meal that smells good and tastes even better.

I give it a delicious 9 out of 10 IMDB rating

The Silence Is Over
Prismark1019 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Clarice makes it debut almost 30 years to the day when The Silence of the Lambs was released in the cinemas.

Set a year after the events of that movie. Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) is regarded as a rookie who struck it lucky in catching Buffalo Bill. Especially by the likes of her superior Agent Paul Krendler (Michael Cudlitz) who also regards her as still being traumatized.

Clarice is brought back to duty by the Attorney General whose daughter was also one of the victims of Buffalo Bill that Clarice rescued.

There is another series killer on the loose, two female bodies have been found and Clarice's behavioural scientific approach is needed.

Clarice is in no mood to toe the official line. When she examines the bodies, they do not show signs of a frenzied attack. It is too clinical with stab wounds being spaced out.

Further investigations indicate that this was a professional killing linked to a botched drug trials.

This is a procedural drama with a famous character. Australian actress Rebecca Breeds certainly does well with the accent as I was reminded of Jodie Foster.

It is interesting to recall that Clarice Starling is an embryonic FBI agent here. Still not experienced enough.

Hence the antagonism from Krendler. From the top of my head I recall Ray Liotta played him in the movie Hannibal.

Rights issues means that Hannibal Lecter and Jack Crawford cannot be mentioned in the series.

The episode does reference back to recreated scenes from The Silence of the Lambs such as Catherine Martin being in the pit. I thought there were too many callbacks with the imagery of the butterflies as well. The show needs to stand on its own two feet.

A big issue for me was that once again it is violence against women being portrayed. There are prolonged scenes of dead naked women.

A good start
TheSleepyOne14 February 2021
For the always tricky exposition episode, "The Silence Is Over" is pretty good. It's the early 90's and Clarice Starling's return to the field as an FBI agent is well portrayed. I thought the character might be too cliched but Rebecca Breeds does an excellent job. The influence of Jodie Foster's Appalachian / Montana accent is clear and, as an Australian, Breeds nails it. Now, I'm also an Aussie, so I'm probably going to miss a few nuanced features of the accent, so maybe take my opinion with a grain of salt.

"You call THAT an accent? Now, THIS is an accent."

I'm unfamiliar with Rebecca Breeds having missed her appearances on "Home and Away" in Australia and her more recent work on "The Originals" and "Pretty Little Liars". I was surprised to discover that she is Australian but I'm glad to count her as one of us. I look forward to the rest of the first season of "Clarice".

hannahjhunter15 February 2021
Clarice is literally co-written by the author of the novels. I'm excited to see where the series will go. I think there's a lot of potential, especially for anyone who enjoyed the novels.

Are they really not gonna talk about Dr. lector ?
nicofreezer24 July 2021
15 minutes in the episode and I had to stop make a google search , why there is not mention of Hannibal Lector !? It turn out its a stupid copyright stuff. How Can you have Clarice without Hannibal ?

Clarice is 10 Time more traumatized about her meeting with Hannibal Lector and the fact that he is in the nature, than traumatized about Buffalo Bill. And this show want to make us think she is traumatized about Buffalo , WTF ?? 😂 But despite all that, it was a good episode of TV, a good Clarice not Jodie Foster but still okay , good acting and directing, writting seems good also. I will watch épisode 2 ans pretend Hannibal dont exist... 😂

To me, clearly inspired by Hannibal.
dewlover42016 April 2021
(If you're missing Hannibal, try Prodigal Son.)

From some slo-mo, to some of the score, to the look and feel occasionally. I could say even more, and get into the specifics of each. But I won't.

It's "inspired" by Hannibal...but I...like that? While not as good, it's similar enough to satisfy me. It's not THAT bad overall.

I'm an INSANELY huge Bryan Fuller fan. This is filling the void of him not being able to finish Hannibal, or ANY of his other shows.

Also, Hannibal started out as an enhanced version of a simple procedural, then ended up as a more serialized and crazy show. Maybe this will do that? If it even lasts very long?

The head of the vcap is over the top frustrating, I get it they are trying to create some tension... but talk about cliche. I hope they tone it down and then this show can have some real potential.

Quid pro quo
ctppjnkc19 February 2021
As someone who grew up in Kanawha County, West Virginia I am personally offended (lol) at the lack of research. Clarice should know that it isn't pronounced "can-a-wha" it is "can-awa".

[6.5] The Silence Is Over: the unimpressive pilot
cjonesas26 August 2021
An unimpressive pilot with lots of cliched scenes, some good acting, especially Clarice, a disgruntled superior and some actors that I keep seeing everywhere! Not a strong start at all, with lots of thematic elements. I, honestly don't think that would really improve or shine out. We'll see.

Very poorly constructed
david-344414 February 2021
I really want to like this series. The producers are making that very difficult. Creating ridiculous, unrealistic tension by having no one trust Clarice is lazy narrative. The whole structure of the story felt like the worst of 1970s TV cliches.

This show drains out all of the intelligence that made The Silence of the Lambs great. It's an insult to the characters, to the actors, and to the fans. It's pedestrian, it's boring, and it lacks anything that could possibly make it compelling.

If you liked The Silence of the Lambs or Hannibal, do yourself a favor and skip this. If you think The Bionic Woman was the pinnacle of TV drama, however, you might enjoy this.

A watered down spin off that feels like just another crime drama with silence of the lambs references/imagery slapped on. Also without its most interesting character because o
tresm8716 February 2021
Once again the nostalgia goldmine fallback struck with Hollywood producers/writers and have unsurprisingly missed the mark...again. As a massive fan of Silence of the lambs, the teaser promo caught my eye though I knew not to expect anything much due to it being a major network show with inexperienced directors and by the book writers working with the decades old classic subject matter. Also Lecter is not featured one bit because of legal rights with nbc. Additionally, I should've known in this overly PC climate, they would take every opportunity to exaggerate gender and race aspects into the show which gets ridiculously tiring.

The whole thing just feels like every other run of the mill crime series and it slaps on Buffalo Bill and silence of the lambs references/imagery for good nostalgic measure. The lead actress does a passable job as Agent Starling and the rest of the cast is just there. The plot is predictable and safe so far and doesn't seem too intriguing. It even attempts a conclusion sequence that mirrors the film's. The soundtrack is also off putting at times and doesn't mesh well with many scenes. I will say it's all shot well with some crisp atmosphere and settings. The makeup effects are also executed very well and near big budget film level of detail.

Overall it never really stood a chance as a major network series without Lecter's character involved at all, but it has enough going for a casual crime drama fan. Just don't expect anything if you're a huge fan of the classic film.

Why is everyone pissed?
funksunone13 February 2021
Everyone is angry all the time. They go so over the top with weird confrontational dialogue nothing feels tense as a result. The actors and characters have a lot of potential if the terrible writing can get out of the way.

So generic
moorel-657176 March 2021
The same thing you have see in every other crime show pilot. It brings nothing new to the table. It is a generic police procedural that you have seen one billion time. This show should have some very interesting tings because it follows silence of the lambs but it is terrible. It doesn't even involve the best character in silence of the lambs, Hannibal. He is not in this, clarice is a very replaceable character (she and will graham are interchangeable) but Hannibal has always been the most interesting part. It is just boring. If you want the good version of this universes story watch the movie, read the books or watch the superior show Hannibal. #BRINGBACKHANNIBAL

Warning: Spoilers
The episode itself isn't remarkable, but it looks like it should be decent, has good production value. Rebecca Breeds is the part, the surrounding characters need a lot of work though. Jane Atkinson's bit is solid as Ruth Martin, wondering where I saw her, "X-Files - Fearful Symmetry."
