For many fans, Bruce Timm’s Dcau gave the most definitive version of Batman. Matt Reeves’ The Batman took inspiration from Timm’s dark and gritty tone of the character in Batman: The Animated Series. Timm proved that he could develop feature-length animated movies, debuting with the Batman movie, Mask of the Phantasm. However, Timm never once got the call from DC or WB to create a live-action Batman film.
Batman: The Animated Series creator Bruce Timm could’ve done a great job with a live-action film
Timm knows that he missed his chance, admitting that he was too lazy to pursue the live-action project. He was even confident that he could come up with a decent movie, that was better than George Clooney’s Batman & Robin and reached somewhere near Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

Todd McFarlane has said that 2024 will be the “make or break year” for getting another Spawn project off the ground. And while we have every right to be skeptical on the matter – McFarlane isn’t exactly the most reliable on this front – fans of the character and the 1997 movie may still hold out hope. But will Michael Jai White return for Spawn 2?
As it turns out, Michael Jai White doesn’t give Spawn all that much thought, although he could potentially consider a return. “I really don’t think much about the sequel. If I was invited to do it, then I’d apply myself toward it, but I mean, I think it’s been talked about for a very long time. And it seems that Todd McFarlane has been leading that conversation.” But for White, there would have to be some conditions if he would suit up again. “I...

Though they've made a fraction of the box office of even the worst DC live-action movie, creatively the crown jewel of DC Comics adaptations lies in their animated movies. It's through animation that the potential of comic book adaptations really shines. Ever since "Superman: Doomsday" was released in 2007, we've had movies that faithfully adapt popular comics storylines (rather than just borrow the name for brand recognition and throw the rest away), original films with wild concepts, and even movies that build on continuity like the biggest cinematic universes.
This is one of the most interesting aspects of the DC animated movies, because there are two proper continuities, each building up characters and storylines and exploring giant crossovers in a way DC has not come even close to figuring out in live-action.
Given how little resources Warner Bros. have used to properly market this universe or make sure audiences are aware of its continuity,...

Not only is One More Shot filmed with the illusion of being one long take like its predecessor 2021’s One Shot, it does something more important. It reunites director James Nunn and writer Jamie Russell with the previous film’s leads, Scott Adkins as Navy Seal Jake Harris and Waleed Elgadi as terrorist Amin Mansur.
Following the events of the first film, Harris is escorting Mansur back to the US where they plan to get him to reveal the whereabouts of a dirty bomb set to explode during the State of the Union Address, which the President, of course, refuses to postpone. For leverage, CIA Agent Marshall has brought Mansur’s pregnant wife Niesha to meet his plane. But they’re not the only ones there to meet the flight.

Based on a 2001 three-issue comic book miniseries written by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and Richard Pace, Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham is an alternate-world tale that introduced an alternate version of Bruce Wayne and the residents of Gotham to Lovecraftian horrors. It’s the most overtly horrific entry in the animated Batman franchise as well as the strangest.

If you’re wondering where all the Batman movies are currently streaming, you’ve come to the right place.
The Caped Crusader is not just one of the most iconic DC Comics characters of all time, he’s also one of the most prominent figures in the last few decades of blockbuster cinema. While Adam West kicked things off with the 1960s TV series “Batman” and subsequent film, filmmaker Tim Burton gave the character a big screen blockbuster with 1989’s “Batman.” Michael Keaton filled the role that was later inhabited by the likes of Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale and Ben Affleck – and that’s not to mention the bevy of animated iterations that have come and gone over the years.
With a new Batman film on the horizon debuting Robert Pattinson’s take on the character, what better time to revisit past iterations of the character. Below is...

Catwoman: Hunted is the latest film in the rebooted DC Animated Movie slate and is, like Batman: Soul of the Dragon, heavily influenced by films of another era. A new year has finally arrived and HBO Max is set to open it with a bang. With its list of new releases for January 2022, HBO Max is rolling out some intriguing original series and an absolutely packed slate of library titles.
The real highlight this month comes on Jan. 13 with the release of Peacemaker. Developed by James Gunn, this series spins off John Cena’s titular character from last years’ The Suicide Squad. The show will delve into the pathology of a superhero who will achieve peace regardless of how many people need to be killed to attain it.
Also of note this month are second seasons for two major HBO series. Euphoria season 2 and The Righteous Gemstones season 2 both premiere on Jan. 9, making for quite the odd double feature. Meanwhile, the fifth and final season of superb comedy Search Party arrives on Jan. 7.
January 2022 is light as far as original movies go.

Between the live action reboot of Mortal Kombat and my growing appreciation of the animated Batman films it was pretty much a given that I would check out another of Warner’s animated offerings, Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms.
Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms begins with a couple fleeing through deserted streets before being confronted by a trio of nasty looking creatures. They kill the couple but Raiden (Dave B. Mitchell; Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous) arrives in time to save their baby whom the mother names Liu Kang with her dying breath.
We’re barely a minute in and already there’s a decapitation and a pair of eyes exploding from their sockets.

The canceled video game adaptation of The Dark Knight is one of the more fascinating and infamous pieces of game industry lore. To some, the title is just a curious footnote in video game history. To others (mostly those who invested in the project or lost their jobs over it), it’s a dark reminder of an idea that is perhaps best left forgotten.
I see the game a little differently, though. While it’s easy to look at these kinds of projects that were never released and wonder what could have been, the fascinating thing about the canceled Dark Knight game is that wondering what would have happened if the game had been released is the quickest way to distract yourself from the many ways that the world of gaming was changed by the fact it wasn’t released.

Just as the Super Bowl traditionally inhibits studios from releasing new titles to theaters, there were few fresh films available on home platforms. As a result, four titles — all previously ranked #1 on multiple charts — took the top spots again. The exception was Netflix, which debuted “Malcolm & Marie” February 5. Starring Zendaya and John David Washington, it immediately became the streamer’s most-watched film.
Long-running, still-Premium VOD titles “Greenland” and “News of the World,” along with $5.99 rentals “Tenet” and “Let Him Go,” are this week’s chart toppers. “News” and “Tenet” made all four lists (as did “The War with Grandpa”). “Let Him Go” failed to make Spectrum’s top 10, with its price reduction coming too late to impact the list.
There were a few surprises. Why is “2067,” an Australian science-fiction film starring Ryan Kwanten and Kodi Smit McPhee, available for $0.99 at Apple? (It’s more expensive elsewhere.) “Promising Young Woman,...

The latest DC animated film Batman: Soul of the Dragon is a complete reimagining of the Dark Knight. It’s an out-of-continuity story, the kind of tale DC usually places under its Elseworlds banner. Set in the 1970s, Soul of the Dragon places Batman (David Giuntoli) as part of an ensemble of heroes, a collection of the top martial arts masters in the DC universe including Richard Dragon (Mark Dacascos), Lady Shiva (Kelly Hu), Ben Turner a.k.a. Bronze Tiger (Michael Jai White), and O-Sensei (James Hong).
“It’s a weird movie in that you can literally take the voice cast and transpose it into live-action and they can make the same movie,” gushes writer Jeremy Adams, “They’re all accomplished and good looking. It all works!”

Batman was enjoying a renaissance as the 1970s dawned. Freed from its ties to the ABC series, editor Julius Schwartz worked with writers Frank Robins and Denny O’Neil on rejuvenating the Darknight Detective, returning him closer to his pulp-roots.
In short order, O’Neil would rise to become the premier Batman scribe of the era to be followed by a notable stretch as his editor from 1986 through the early 2000s. His impact is immeasurable. On the side, though, he aspired to be a prose writer as well and among his works from that period was a collaboration with cartoonist Jim Berry on the 1974 novel Kung Fu Master, Richard Dragon: Dragon’s Fists (1974) under the pseudonym “Jim Dennis.”
As the Martial Arts craze was beginning its descent, DC Comics optioned the novel and had O’Neil write and edit the adaptation as Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter. There, he introduced readers to Dragon,...

Now this is my kind of Batman movie! Part James Bond spy thriller and part Bruce Lee-esque martial arts movie, Batman: Soul of the Dragon is very much like the Batman books I grew up reading. It is here that Bruce, along with other elite students, is forged in the fire of the martial arts discipline. Way back in September, DC’s second FanDome event dropped a huge announcement: DC Universe, the all-encompassing DC entertainment streaming app that featured comics, movies, and TV shows from the DC catalog, would narrow its focus to comics, becoming an app called DC Universe Infinite.
The new app launches on Jan. 21 and brings with is a slew of changes, many of them for the better — at least if comics are what you’re looking for. Den of Geek got an early peek under the hood of the app and we have plenty of good news to share.
How It Works
First thing’s first: if you already have a DC Universe subscription and you’ve signed off on switching your account to the new app, all you have to do is download the DC Universe Infinite app when it goes live on Thursday morning. The new app will overwrite your...

Batman: Soul of the Dragon sets Gotham’s caped crusader in a vintage martial arts homage. Directed by Sam Liu, who also directed the animated movie version of one of the greatest Batman graphic novels ever published, Batman: The Killing Joke, this is the 42nd project in the ongoing DC Universe Movies series.
However, Soul of the Dragon is an original tale, not based on a precedent comic. Like the eye popping anime-style film Batman Ninja, this is a completely stand-alone story. Batman: Soul of the Dragon is yet another chapter in the many creation tales for Batman. It tells of his martial indoctrination and joining him on this adventure are three of the best martial artists within the DC multiverse: Lady Shiva (Kelly Hu), Ben Turner a.k.a. The years spent by Bruce Wayne training to become a crimefighter are some of the most fascinating in the Batman mythos, and have been explored in multiple ways across various mediums. A new DC animated feature, Batman: Soul of the Dragon now offers the intriguing prospect of a 1970s-set story wherein a young Bruce embarks on the path to martial arts mastery. We recently received the trailer and first clip from the film, and now have an introduction to Richard Dragon, one of the main characters from the Bruce Timm-produced movie.
In the video, which you can catch above, voice actor Mark Dacascos describes how we meet Dragon in the 1970s as a super spy who trained with Bruce alongside master O-Sensei. We then see Dragon in training, and being pointed out by O-Sensei to Bruce, foreshadowing the partnership between the two depicted in the recent trailer. At this point,...

Batman: Soul of the Dragon sounds like an interesting departure from the usual slate of DC animated movies. The story is set during the 1970s and follows a young Bruce Wayne on the path of martial arts mastery. We’ll see him training with and battling other elite martial artists, including Richard Dragon, Ben Turner and Lady Shiva, all of whom are under the tutelage of O-Sensei.
We don’t know too much about the plot just yet, but the synopsis has teased that the students will have to face off against “a deadly menace from the past.” Who this is remains a mystery, but given the location the film is set in, the kung fu movie tone and the 1970s time period, I think the chances are good that the menace will be a bare-chested Ra’s al Ghul.

It’s kind of funny how the animated Batman movies can appear to get an R-rating and the live-action ones can’t, isn’t it? In Batman: Soul of the Dragon it’s kind of obvious that it’s not taking off any comic and that it’s bringing up a story idea that’s going to be kind of fun and is also going to use some impressive voice casting to make it work. Kelly Hu takes on the role of Lady Shiva while Mark Dacascos takes on the role of Richard Dragon, while Michael Jai White voices the part of Ben Turner/Bronze Tiger. David Giuntoli

DC’s animated movies are of a far more consistent quality than the current crop of live-action efforts, and a trailer has now been released for the next installment, Batman: Soul of the Dragon, and it looks glorious.
Instead of some nebulously defined time roughly analogous to the present, this is rooted firmly in the ‘70s, mullets, sideburns, tank tops, afros, funk and all, and is directly inspired by the ceaseless succession of martial arts movies that Hong Kong churned out throughout the decade and beyond. It sees Batman (David Giuntoli) reunite with those with whom he trained – Richard Dragon (Mark Dacascos), Bronze Tiger (Michael Jai White) and Lady Shiva (Kelly Hu) – when the world is threatened by a fanatical cult led by a mad scientist who wants to usher in a new age of global chaos.

Announced at a panel adjacent to DC’s Fandome over the weekend, the rest of the slate of DC animated features for 2021 includes a couple of very interesting choices.
The first film due out is Batman: Soul of the Dragon, a ’70s kung fu movie but with Batman. It stars Grimm star David Giuntoli as Batman; Chairman Kaga’s nephew Mark Dacascos as DC apex martial artist Richard Dragon; Kelly Hu as Lady Shiva; James Hong as O-Sensei; and Black Dynamite himself, Michael Jai White, returning to the Bronze Tiger role he played in the Arrowverse. It’s an original story about Batman and former classmate martial artists tackling a mystery from their shared past.
Following that is another original story: Justice Society: World War II. Matt Bomer, the host of an IGN panel on the next movie, Superman: Man of Tomorrow, hinted that he may be part of the voice cast.

The nerdgasmic chaos of DC Fandome has brought some great news for fans of the Dark Knight, with the confirmation that an animated adaptation of Jeff Loeb and Tim Sale’s limited series Batman: The Long Halloween is in the works.
Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s iconic Batman: Year One re-established the Caped Crusader’s canonical origin after Crisis On Infinite Earths reset the DC universe to clean up the increasingly messy continuity, and this miniseries acts as a follow-up to its events. The plot features the hunt for a serial killer nicknamed Holiday due to his M.O. of committing murders on significant annual celebrations, with his targets principally consisting of the family and associates of mob boss Carmine Falcone and the spree beginning on Halloween and continuing through to the same day the following year.
