Spider-Man: Far From Home introduced audiences to Mysterio, one of Spider-Man’s most important and dastardly villains. Jake Gyllenhaal’s portrayal of the character had audiences believing that the character was genuinely heroic, even those who thought they knew how the character was in the comics. However, the film also introduced another important character into the MCU: Spider-Man’s very first antagonist from way back in The Amazing Spider-Man #1.

Dmitri Smerdyakov is the oldest antagonist that Spider-Man ever faced, better known as The Chameleon. Half-brother to Kraven the Hunter, the character has had a long history with Spider-Man, created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Dmitri was present in Spider-Man: Far From Home as a background character, appearing in several shots as a close associate of Nick Fury.

Exclusive: DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s Kung Fu Panda 4 crossed the $500M mark globally this past weekend, reaching the milestone on a staggered release pattern that has worked well for the partners in the past (think Puss in Boots: The Last Wish). Isabelle Huppert, the Oscar-nominated actor of “Elle,” is set to reteam with French director Jean-Paul Salomé (“Mama Weed”) on the French thriller “The Sitting Duck.”
The movie, produced by Bertrand Faivre at Le Bureau and co-produced by Bettina Brokemper at Heimatfilm, boasts a stellar cast, which also includes Benoit Magimel, Marina Fois, Alexandra Maria Lara, Grégory Gadebois and François-Xavier Demaison.
Huppert previously starred in Salomé’s crime comedy “Mama Weed” as a French-Arabic translator for the Paris drug police who becomes a savvy wholesale pusher.
The French star will this time star as Maureen Kearney, a whistleblower who is found in her home, tied to a chair, the letter “A” carved into her abdomen, and a knife handle inserted into her vagina. Traumatized, she has no memory of the assault. But the investigation uncovers new elements leading Maureen to become a suspect.

A great hero is only as good as their villains. The path a hero take is defined by multiple encounters with a collection of colourful foes. One of the greatest joys in reading comics is finding out who so and so will be fighting this month and how they will gain the upper hand? We wait months for a villain to make their glorious return. The bad guys always have the best cliff hanger moments and the best one liners. Can you imagine what it was like in the early days of a new comic series, when it must have felt like a new villain was introduced every issue. I wonder who finally had the break through to say “Oh that villain from issue X was popular let’s bring them back for round two.” One thing I have learnt from being in fandom is that fans love a good face off.

Tagline: "You're Mission: Don't Die." Another Doom film is coming your way via Universal 1440 Entertainment and director Tony Giglio, titled Doom: Annihilation. Universal 1440 is the same production house behind Death Race 4: Beyond Anarchy and Giglio also wrote this film venture. Both Doom: Annihilation and Death Race 4 where shot in Bulgaria. And, the latest Doom production sounds very similar, in story, to the original 2005 film. Of course, both films are based off of the 1993 first-person action shooter game. This latest release borrows from the game's story with Space Marines investigating a distress call from a Martian moon. The 2019 version stars: Louis Mandylor (Daylight's End), Amy Manson (The Chameleon), Nina Bergman (Assassin X), Gavin Brocker and many more. The film's official teaser trailer is here. The clip does not reveal too much. However, fans of the series can see some of the film's settings and creatures. There is an action...

Prior to Rossi exchanging vows with bride Krystall, we learned that Jj had some words of love of her own to share — with longtime colleague Spencer Reid. Held hostage by an UnSub who had been compelling people to get into car crashes and then shoot dead the other driver, Jj was eventually challenged with a “Truth or Dare” of her own. Here's the thing about the documentary The Imposter: It may well be the scariest non-scary movie you've ever seen. It's not a supernatural horror story or a creepy slasher fic or even exactly a psychological thriller, although it will get inside your head. It's the real-life story of a boy who went missing — and the grown-man who pretended to be him. You've heard of con artists before swindling people out of their money, but what happened here is somehow even more sinister. Because The Imposter shows you how a then-23-year-old Frédéric Bourdin pretended to be a 16-year-old Nicholas Barclay, despite looking nothing like him, and how Nicholas' family improbably accepted him as their own. Who was Nicholas Barclay? (Photo Credit: YouTube) Nicholas Patrick Barclay is the name of an American boy who disappeared from San Antonio, Texas at the age of 13. Born on New Year's Eve in 1980, Nicky was...

With each day that passes, it’s looking increasingly likely that Cletus Kasady is the chief antagonist of Venom, Sony and Ruben Fleischer’s adult-oriented spinoff set to carve out a new corner within the Spider-Man universe.
Better known to you, I and the people of New York City as Carnage, the mentally unstable symbiote who goes on to become Eddie Brock’s sworn enemy, Kasady’s alleged role in the film has been well-documented, with many believing that Riz Ahmed (Rogue One, Nightcrawler) will be the one to portray Carnage (or even The Chameleon?) come October.
Adding fuel to the fire today is a now-deleted Instagram post from Tom Hardy himself, which features a graphic, almost graffiti-esque rendition of Eddie Brock (Venom) operating under the shadow of Kasady’s warped alter-ego, Carnage. Sony’s Venom movie is a fascinatingly unknown property at the moment. Despite having begun shooting with an October 5th, 2018 release date in mind, we know very little about what direction they’ll be taking the character in, though we’ve had hints that the studio might be considering an R-rating to truly capture the anti-hero.
Now though, courtesy of the below set photo, we might just have some idea of who Riz Ahmed is going to be playing in the film – and it’s not who everyone thought it was. We’ve known for a while that the Rogue One and Four Lions star would be appearing in the movie, with fans first assuming that he’d be taking on the role of Venom’s even more murderous sibling, Carnage. That was quickly shot down, however and there was also some talk that he might be playing The Chameleon...

2012 was a strong year for documentaries, and the pick of them all was arguably The Imposter, and ahead of the film’s DVD release, which is today, we were fortunate enough to catch up (once again) with director Bart Layton.
The Imposter tells the story of Frédéric Bourdin, a French con-artist who miraculously impersonated Nicholas Barclay, a missing child a few years his junior. Taking place in 1997, Bourdin moved to America to live with the family who had been searching for their son for a number of years.
Having interviewed Bart (alongside Charlie Parker, a detective from the picture) prior to the film’s cinematic release, we have been given the chance to discuss with the talented filmmaker his life five months on, and how this extraordinary film has changed the prospective fortunes for him, as he begins a new project with Hollywood star James Franco.

Lawless; The Girl; The Imposter
Australian-born film-maker John Hillcoat is an often underrated auteur whose arresting filmography spans the broiling prison rebellion of Ghosts… of the Civil Dead, through the rugged western terrain of The Proposition to the bleak apocalypse of The Road, the last beautifully (but unpopularly) adapted from Cormac McCarthy's famously "unfilmable novel". Collaborating frequently with writer and composer Nick Cave, Hillcoat returns obsessively to themes of familial loyalty and modern mythology, with a quasi-biblical sense of archetypal justice and retribution often firing the infernal engine of his dramas.
Fittingly, family, mythology and vengeful justice are all at the heart of Lawless (2012, Momentum, 18), screenwriter Cave's adaptation of Matt Bondurant's visceral historical novel The Wettest County in the World. Handsomely set in prohibition-era Virginia (Benoît Delhomme's location cinematography conjures a perfect blend of pastoral lyricism and brutal violence), the film follows the changing fortunes of the Bondurant brothers,...

In 1997 Frenchman Frederic Bourdin persuaded an American family he was their missing teenage son. Now a new film revisits the events, uncovering an even murkier tale
After his film became a word of mouth hit at the Sundance festival in January, British director Bart Layton was flown to Hollywood for "a mad tour" of the big studios. When he got there, though, he realised no one quite knew what to make of his work. "People are desperate to find categories," he says. "They say, is it documentary? Is it fiction? Americans refer to everything that isn't documentary as 'narrative', but I would absolutely argue that this is a narrative film."
"This" is a documentary called The Imposter, the story of Frédéric Bourdin, a mixed-race Parisian who, in the late-90s, adopted the identity of Nicholas Barclay, a boy seven years his junior. Bourdin's age – 23 – and appearance – stubbled and swarthy – didn't...

Nicholas Barclay disappeared from his family home in San Antonio, Texas at the tender age of thirteen. Three years and four months later, an unaccompanied 16-year-old boy is found in France. When circumstances lead French authorities to believe he is Nicholas Barclay, he’s swiftly returned to a concerned family who welcome him all too easily. However, as the FBI and a sole private investigator notice subtle differences that, for some reason, have been overlooked by the family, it soon becomes clear that so-called Nicholas Barclay is in fact impostor Frédéric Bourdin (portrayed in interviews and dramatisations by Adam O’Brian).

One of my favorite documentaries I saw at Sundance 2012 was The Imposter, about Frédéric Bourdin, known as "The Chameleon", who successfully pretended he was a 16 year old missing boy and was brought home to a Texas family back in 1997. It's a fascinating nearly-unbelievable doc (read my review) about how this guy could convince authorities and this entire family that he really was their missing son now found in Europe. At the end of the festival, we caught up with the doc's director Bart Layton and producer Dimitri Doganis for a discussion on how they made the doc, how it came together, and their stories along the way. We filmed the interview on location at Sundance (apologies for the brief background noise) and spoke with Bart and Dimitri about various aspects of the film that we found so interesting. This is our full chat in uncut form. Watch the ...

The Chameleon Directed By: Jean-Paul Salomé Written By: Jean-Paul Salomé, Natalie Carter and Christophe D'Antonio (story) Starring: Ellen Barkin, Famke Janssen, Marc-André Grondin, Emilie De Ravin and Nick Stahl The Chameleon (Le caméléon) is a fictionalized account of the bizarre true story of Frédéric Bourdin, an imposter who passed himself off as a missing teenager from Louisiana. Journalist Christophe D’Antonio chronicled the exploits of Bourdin in a 2007 book [1]. Bourdin is reputed to have assumed multiple identities over a series of years, but this particular tale concerns the case that ultimately led to his arrest. A poor family from the Bayou is astonished when a young man in France claims he is their missing son Nicholas (Marc-André Grondin), who disappeared when he was thirteen years old. Nicholas returns home reclusive and withdrawn, no doubt a result of being kidnapped, raped and traumatized. However, his family’s response to his return is puzzling,...

Title: The Chameleon Director: Jean-Paul Salome Starring: Marc-Andre Grondin, Ellen Barkin, Famke Janssen, Emilie de Ravin, Nick Stahl, Brian Geraghty, Tory Kittles, Nick Chinlund Amazing things happen every day, all the world over, but the perils of sticking too closely to chronological fact in the cinematic adaptation of what by most accounts is an interesting true story are amply demonstrated in The Chameleon, an emotionally opaque drama about a wayward European youngster who — with the help of a deeply dysfunctional family, each of whom perhaps has different reasons for wanting to believe – passes himself off as a missing Louisiana teen before finally being outed by federal investigators. A solidly sketched sense of place can’t elevate this torpid...

There once was a man named Frédéric Bourdin. Desperate to fill the voids in his life, he hit the road and lived not as himself, but as a number of different identities. But they weren't just figments of his imagination. No matter what his age, he specialized in orphans and young people, daring to even take on the identity of three missing children. In fact, Bourdin was so skilled -- at mimicry or maybe just preying on desperation -- that he even managed to convince one American family that he was their son, even with a French accent and the wrong color eyes.

Kinology is heading to Cannes with a single title in Copacabana – the Isabelle Huppert starring with her daughter comedy is a focal point in the Critic's Week section this year. It's the projects that they've got on the sales slate that have got my ears perked up in an upright position – beginning with Juan Solanas' next - he is currently shooting Upside Down in Montreal, while Andrew Niccol is still in pre-production mod with The Cross – if I remember correctly it was first announced at last year's Cannes and they are trying to bring down the price tag on the 50 million dollar-ish production. French items worth keeping an eye out for are Benoît Philippon's Lullaby for Pi – which was shot in Canada and would logically find a spot at Tiff. Mathieu Kassovitz also has a project in development . Buried by Rodrigo Cortes - Post-Production Heartbreaker (L'arnacoeur) by Pascal Chaumeil...

With Tribeca handing out their awards last tonight and me coming back to life (things have been crazy) I thought we'd talk about some people attending New York's glitzy festival. I'm asking a comment question in red for each of them because I'm "reader discussion guide" annoying like that. Maybe I should have been a T.A.? Tribeca doesn't have the same prestige or art-driven mentality as the far older New York Film Festival (always in the fall) but it does pack theaters all over town, offer up a diverse 'something for everyone' slate and bring out the celebrities in droves. To hawk their films. Though I did see Ben Stiller and Denis Leary as audience members at the religious satire The Infidel.

The Sva Theater in Chelsea was home to a starry evening last night as the Tribeca Film Festival hosted the world premiere of the French/USA co-production The Chameleon (Le Cameleon). Before the screening began, director Jean-Paul Salome briefly took the microphone in front of the packed house, with assorted members of his filmmaking team surrounded him. The Chameleon, his first English language movie, afforded him the opportunity to work with two famous actresses, Famke Janssen and Ellen Barkin. Salome excitedly introduced the two gorgeous stars, who stood from their seats on either side of the theater and quickly dashed to the front. In a rush of applause for the stars, the director simply stated, "Thank you for coming, I hope you enjoy." The actresses leaned in to echo his gratitude. Even before the applause had died down, the filmmaking team were making their way back down the aisles as...

It seems like last week that Tribeca 2009 was here, but already a new festival is here with a slim packet of horrors and thrillers. The Chameleon from Jean-Pual Salome will be in attendance at the festival and this psychological thriller pits the FBI against a devout family. Identities will be challenged as stars Ellen Barkin and Nick Stahl cling on to hope for family unity. Check this one out Friday, April 23rd if you are in the Lower Manhattan area.
The synopsis for The Chameleon here:
"When a mysterious drifter (Marc-André Grondin) is positively identified as Nicholas Barclay, a Louisiana teenager missing for three years, his sister (Emilie de Ravin) and mother (Ellen Barkin) welcome him back into their home and begin the long road to reconciliation. But the family's joyful reunion turns bittersweet when suspicions arise about the veracity of Nicolas' claims. A skeptical FBI agent (Famke Janssen) and...

We've been looking at each Meryl Streep Oscar nod and its competitive field. Previously: 78, 79, 81, 82, 83 and 85
Meryl Streep's first act was the Liberated Lady. The second was The Chameleon in which Meryl was always the lead, always had new hair, voice and body language and basically controlled Oscar's Universe. It was as if there was only 4 spots for Best Actress, one reserved for her in perpetuity. This second act ended with her intense immersion into notorious dingo-hating Lindy Chamberlain in A Cry in the Dark. [Editor's Note: Yes, I'll do a top ten performance list when "Streep at 60" wraps in mid July. I've heard your requests and I've been rewatching all the movies.]
Starting in 1989 Act III of Streep's career began but we'll get to that shortly. First, let's look at her competition in the last two years of her legendary Act II.

the nominees were...

Here’s one more reason to celebrate Friday: Two of the sexiest over-40 women in Hollywood are making a film together.
Ellen Barkin and Famke Janssen will star in Jean Paul Salome’s The Chameleon, scheduled for release in 2010.
The Chameleon is based on the true story of Frédéric Bourdin, a man who assumed at least 39 identities — including three missing teenagers. A New Yorker article in August told the incredible tale, which I found absolutely riveting. I can barely believe that Bourdin was able to pull off one deception after another for 20 years.
The film focuses on one of the missing-persons cases, the reunion of Nicholas Barclay and his family. Bourdin posed as Barclay, claiming that he had escaped from a child prostitution ring, until people started questioning his true identity. Canadian actor Marc-Adre Grodin will play Bourdin, a.k.a. The Chameleon
Barkin plays the missing boy’s cougar mother.
