I’m not embarrassed to admit that I consume all kinds of rom-coms: the good, the not-so-good, the somewhere-in-between. (I draw the line at anything that stars Ashton Kutcher. Hollywood: Please put Pedro Pascal on your rom-com leading-man shortlists. Many thanks in advance.) Anyway, I’ve sensed a shift of late. A change in the vibe. A subtle, faintly nostalgic perfume in the air: It’s not overpowering, like the glossy rom-com-a-minute marketplace of the 1990s and early aughts, but still bright and warm and mood-boosting. The box office success of Anyone but You ($218 million globally) and streaming hit Irish Wish (currently top 5 in Nielsen’s movie chart), the fresh deals being made, the rom-coms rolling out this year with big names attached — all this activity reflects audience enthusiasm for polished, character-driven entertainment with jokes, heart and wish fulfillment.

Romantic comedies are alive and well, it seems, and we have a couple of emerging, A-list movie stars to thank for it. "Anyone But You" has officially crossed the $200 million mark at the box office in one of the most unlikely turnarounds for a movie in years, financially speaking. But the star power of Glen Powell ("Top Gun: Maverick") and Sydney Sweeney ("Euphoria") got the attention of the moviegoing masses and they turned this lower-mid-budget rom-com into the biggest hit the genre has seen in nearly a decade.
The Sony Pictures release has amassed $87 million domestically to go with a stellar $113 million internationally, per Variety. That puts it past the total of other recent hits in the genre, including "Ticket to Paradise" ($168 million), which starred both Julia Roberts and George Clooney, as well as "The Lost City" ($192 million), which was led by Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. Score one for true love! Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell’s romantic comedy “Anyone But You” hit a notable box office milestone with $200 million globally.
It stands as the highest-grossing romantic comedy in years, outperforming recent star-driven entries in the genre like Julia Roberts and George Clooney’s “Ticket to Paradise” ($168 million) and the Sandra Bullock-led “The Lost City” ($192 million). “Anyone But You” is the first rom-com in half a decade to cross $200 million, since 2018’s PG-13 “Crazy Rich Asians” ($239 million), and the first of the R-rated variety since 2016’s “Bridget Jones’s Baby” ($211 million).
“Anyone But You” debuted in December with a soft $6 million but managed to remain on box office charts into the New Year. In that time, ticket sales have climbed to 86.5 million at the domestic box office and $112.8 million internationally. The film cost $25, so it’s hugely profitable for Sony — and a reminder that rom-coms can...

The international box office was generally muted this weekend, save for in China which ushered in the Year of the Dragon on Saturday, and with it the lucrative Chinese New Year moviegoing period. According to early figures from Maoyan, the first two days of Spring Festival 2024 amassed Rmb 2.44B ($339M), just a touch below the comparable days in 2023.
Although Maoyan’s Pegasus 2 was tops on Saturday, the first day of the holiday, ultimately it was the Jia Ling Cfg/Alibaba inspirational film Yolo that won the weekend with an estimated Rmb 804M ($112M/comScore has it slightly lower at $110.4M) across the two-day stretch. IMAX accounted for $3.6M of that. It often happens that the day-one winner is overtaken on day two.

On Thursday, we predicted that this weekend would look the same as the previous two weekends with the only shake up coming by way of the fourth and fifth spot (Migration and Anyone But You) switching positions. Well, there may be another position switch as currently Mean Girls and The Beekeeper are locked in an epic battle of wills where each film is currently looking at first place with around $6.4 million in projected weekend grosses.
That would be quite the feat for the Jason Statham/ David Ayer pairing. In a world where R rated action films not named John Wick tend to underperform before fading to obscurity, The Beekeeper has the opportunity to take first place in its third week of release. The film actually has tasted that victory before as just this past week it landed on the top of the charts for several days. It is for that...

The Oscar winner recently spoke with Sky News about his latest directorial project, the film The Boys in the Boat.
During the interview, Clooney admitted that when it comes to directing compared to acting, “It’s more fun, you have a lot more control. I get to boss them around and I don’t have to learn how to row,” he quipped.
The Gravity actor added, “It’s fun to come in in the morning and it’s fun to write a screenplay and then have somebody build a set that you wrote, it really is.”
While Clooney has starred in dozens of projects, including Ticket to Paradise, Up in the Air, Michael Clayton, Ocean’s Eleven and ER, he has also directed a handful of films throughout his career such as The Tender Bar,...

The first couple of weekends of 2024 have been relatively quiet so far as the box office is concerned. Blumhouse's horror flick "Night Swim" is the only major new release to contend with thus far and the haunted swimming pool flick had a somewhat muted debut. But something pretty amazing is quietly unfolding right now, and it all has to do with Sony's rom-com "Anyone But You." Released at the tail end of last year, the film has quietly become the mind-blowing box office story of the moment, raking as the first true surprise of the year. So, what's going on exactly? Let's break it down.
The R-rated comedy, which stars Glen Powell ("Top Gun: Maverick") and Sydney Sweeney ("Euphoria"), opened to just $6 million over the weekend of December 22 against a $25 million budget. Facing a wave of competition from the likes of "Wonka" and "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," it...

Kate Hudson appeared on “The View” and reflected on the recent 20th anniversary of her iconic romantic comedy “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” The genre has lost much its box office dominance in the decades since Hudson first linked up with Matthew McConaughey to the tune of $105 million at the domestic box office and $177 million worldwide. For comparison’s sake, the just-released rom-com “Anyone But You,” starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, has earned a decent $38 million and counting worldwide.
“It’s hard to get male movie stars to make rom-coms,” Hudson said about the current state of the genre. “That’s a big part of the equation … is to have that event. If we can get more Marvel guys like … hey, come to do a rom-com! That’s part of the formula, too. That event.”

Yes, streaming killed the romantic comedy star, but Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell are hoping to change that with the pre-Christmas theatrical release of their Sony movie, Anyone but You.
While streaming has hogged up a large number of star-driven comedies and romantic comedies, which have been sparse at theaters, it’s not to say that they don’t work when done right on the big screen.
Post pandemic the Universal Hawaii-set George Clooney-Julia Roberts reteam Ticket to Paradise was a bright spot for older audiences last fall with a $16.5M opening, $68.2M domestic result, $168.7M WW final take. Pre-pandemic, let’s not forget about Warner Bros.’ Crazy Rich Asians which opened to $26.5M, and finaled at $174.8M domestic, $239.3M WW.

Julia Roberts is an icon of the romantic-comedy genre, but there’s one famous rom-com the Oscar-winner happened to turn down: Nora Ephron’s 1998 classic “You’ve Got Mail.” Roberts revealed the scoop during a recent appearance on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live.”
Ephron’s film memorably paired Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in the story of business rivals unaware they are falling in love with each other online. “You’ve Got Mail” marked the third Hanks-Ryan romantic comedy after “Joe Versus the Volcano” (1990) and “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993), the latter title also being directed by Ephron. Had Roberts taken the role, it would’ve extended her 1990s rom-com streak that already included hits like “Pretty Woman” (1990), “Notting Hill” (1999) and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” (1997).
Asked by a fan to name some roles she has turned down in career, Roberts stressed that she does not regret any of her choices. She said any...

The actor also takes on directing duties for her return to the genre she’s best known for, opposite David Duchovny, with mostly so-so results
There’s an impressive level of confidence displayed by Meg Ryan in her second outing as director, less so for what the film itself ends up being but more for what she’s trying to emulate. The star of When Harry Met Sally making a talky two-hander romcom, dedicated to that film’s screenwriter, Nora Ephron, demands an immediate comparison to one of the greatest examples of the genre ever made. But What Happens Later, Aka When Meg Met David Duchovny, is set up for an almighty fall, struggling to even deserve comparison to the star’s less-lauded romcoms.

Rudolph Isley, a founding member of the Grammy-winning Isley Brothers who helped create some of the most memorable songs in American musical history, has died. His brother Ron confirmed the news to Deadline. Rudolph Isley was 84.
In a statement provided to Deadline, Ron Isley said of his brother’s passing, “There are no words to express my feelings and the love I have for my brother. Our family will miss him. But I know he’s in a better place.”
The Isley Brothers have had various lineups through the years, but Rudy was with the band from its beginnings in the late 1950s to his retirement from music in 1989, when he took up a Christian ministry. During that time, they recorded such classics as “Shout,” cowritten by Rudy, which in 1959 became their first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. The record sold over a million copies. Numbers have begun rolling in for this first full weekend in October and they are generally in line with our predictions from Thursday. The Exorcist: Believer is coming out on top with what is looking like a softer than expected $28 million (tracking had the film taking in between $30-$36 million).
This is both good and bad news for the newest entry in the decades old franchise as it definitely represents a franchise best opening, and that will certainly be the headlines for this weekend. While the fact that it is getting completely obliterated by critics means that this softer than expected opening will likely have a horrendous second week drop. Ranging from calling it dull to our own Chris Bumbray calling it “awful” in his 4/10 review. And whereas sometimes there is a big discrepancy between critic and audiences, this one seems to be hated by both as it currently has a 55% audience score.

George Clooney was one of Hollywood's most eligible bachelors for years. But that all changed when the Oscar winner met and fell hard for his now-wife, high-profile human-rights lawyer Amal Clooney (née Alamuddin). Not only is George a married man, but he's also a dad to two kids.
George and Amal got married in a ceremony in Venice, Italy, in 2014, and the latter gave birth to their fraternal twins, Alexander and Ella, in June 2017. Though George is known for starring in dozens of Hollywood productions, including "Ocean's Eleven," "Up in the Air," "Gravity," and "Ticket to Paradise," his roles as a husband and father are the ones closest to his heart. "In marriage, and now with the kids, you give away the selfishness of only looking out for yourself," George told People in 2020. "It's a wonderful thing. Amal and I talk about it every day. . . . We feel so lucky."

Director Kenneth Branagh’s A Haunting in Venice has started off its North American box office run with $1.2 million in previews, just ahead of the last film in the Agatha Christie-inspired movie series and other adult-skewing titles including Ticket to Paradise. The latter two films both started off with $1.1 million in previews on their way to opening to $13 million and $16.5 million, respectively.
Haunting in Venice, from 20th Century Studios and Disney, is likewise tracking for a $13 million to $15 million domestic launch.
That’s not far ahead of the last film in the series, Death on the Nile, which opened to $12.8 million in February 2022, when the box office was still in recovery mode. The sequel was among the many films delayed because of Covid-19; it also had to contend with negative publicity surrounding star Armie Hammer (he doesn’t appear in the new film). In what might be one of the most encouraging box office stories of recent memory, MGM's raunchy, R-rated comedy "Bottoms" had one heck of a debut at the box office this past weekend. The film, directed by Emma Seligman, debuted in limited release to get in on the National Cinema Day goodness, and that strategy certainly panned out -- so much so that it actually broke a record held by this year's Best Picture Oscar winner "Everything Everywhere All at Once." That is good company to be in.
According to The Numbers, "Bottoms" debuted to $516,254 on just 10 screens across a few key markets in the U.S., including Los Angeles, New York City, and Austin. That gives the film a per-screen average of $51,625, which is mighty impressive. It now holds the distinction of the best per-screen average of the pandemic era for a movie that opened on ten screens or more.

It's been a tough stretch for theatrical comedy over the last couple of years, save for a couple of hit rom-coms in "The Lost City" and "Ticket to Paradise." Beyond that, comedy has largely had to fight for scraps at the box office, with even Billy Eichner's well-liked "Bros" bombing in downright disconcerting fashion. But as the fall season approaches, MGM and Orion are hoping to break through with "Bottoms," an irreverent and wildly acclaimed comedy that stars Rachel Sennott and "The Bear" breakout Ayo Edebiri.
It's difficult to find comparisons for a movie like this in terms of a wide-release theatrical comedy. Having seen the movie, I can confidently say it's wildly original and straight-up bonkers. I would look at "Bros" doing just $14.7 million worldwide as the floor in a worst-case scenario. Oddly, I would look at something like "Barbarian," which had that "you need to see this...

One of the genres that has struggled most in the post-pandemic landscape theatrically is comedy. Divorced of movies connected to major franchises, straight-up comedy has had a tough go outside of streaming in recent years, with only romcoms like "The Lost City" and "Ticket to Paradise" truly breaking out as unqualified success stories. Be that as it may, Universal Pictures is entering the late summer fold with an R-rated comedy in the form of "Strays," which features an A-list cast as talking dogs. Will the gimmick work? It just might.
Box Office Pro currently has the film taking in between $15 and $25 million on its opening weekend next week. That would put it in a tight race with Warner Bros. and DC's "Blue Beetle," which is eyeing a $13 to $18 million start. Hollywood megastar George Clooney has come out in support of SAG-AFTRA and its 160,000-strong membership as the performers union takes to picket lines.
“This is an inflection point in our industry,” Clooney said in a short statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
“For our industry to survive that has to change. For actors, that journey starts now,” he added as the actors union goes on strike after failing to reach a new deal with studios and streamers.
SAG-AFTRA members join Writers Guild of America members, on strike since early May, in the first double strike in Hollywood since 1960, which looks to largely shut down the film and TV business.
Clooney in his statement added “actors and writers in large numbers have lost their ability to make a living.”

Jennifer Lawrence’s much-discussed return to studio star vehicles, in a film being pitched as a canary in the coal mine for the theatrical strength of star-driven comedies, got off to a promising start as Sony’s “No Hard Feelings” earned $2.15 million in Thursday previews.
Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City,” meanwhile, expanded into 1,675 theaters with $1.1 million for Focus Features. That’s after shattering records for a per-theater-average for a six-screen (or more) release last weekend.
Both results mark good news for non-tentpole films from studios that would love to depend on more than just franchise flicks.
“No Hard Feelings” stars Lawrence as a down-on-her-luck woman who takes a gig to “date” an introverted 19-year-old so that the kid can sow some oats — or at least come out of his shell before college.

Can an R-rated comedy that draws big laughs still bring in outsized ticket sales at the box office?
Jennifer Lawrence’s “No Hard Feelings” will put that question to the test as the raunchy funny film opens over the weekend in 3,000 North American theaters, where it’s expected to earn a tepid $12 million in its debut.
That’s not a terrible result at a time in which theatrical comedies, especially of the R-rated variety, have become something of endangered species. But it also wouldn’t be a great start considering its star power, $45 million budget and prime June release date. Earlier this year, Universal’s wild R-rated “Cocaine Bear” opened to $23.2 million — and (with all due respect to the drugged-up grizzly) that film wasn’t headlined by one of the biggest names in Hollywood.
Attendance at the domestic box office will be crucial for “No Hard Feelings” because broad comedies...
