The police arrest a suspect in front of the whole town, without waiting for further evidence or DNA tests. In recent years, we've seen more and more news of book-to-film adaptations getting TV remakes. Examples include His Dark Materials, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Interview with the Vampire, Reacher, as well as upcoming high-octane adaptations like Twilight and, of course, Harry Potter.
Some of us see this pop culture phenomenon as a miserable exploitation of once-popular franchises, while others are thrilled by the success of the aforementioned reboots. But what few can argue with is the fact that in 2024, technological capabilities have improved and the series can accommodate much more detail than the movie.
That's why the upcoming Harry Potter show could be a great opportunity for a long-awaited depiction of one of the best moments in the book that was barely touched on in the movie.
New Harry Potter Show Already in the Works
In April 2023, Warner Bros. officially announced that J.K. Rowling's fantasy novels would officially get a new live-action adaptation.

This episodes one and two review contains plot details but is largely spoiler-free.
In eight-part crime thriller Criminal Record, Peter Capaldi’s Dci accuses Cush Jumbo’s DS of unconscious bias. Has she – a woman of colour – automatically believed a tip-off about a West African-British prisoner’s wrongful conviction because she’s primed to see racist conspiracy everywhere? Or is Jumbo’s character simply seeing racist conspiracy because she’s looking right at it?
That mystery is at the centre of this new drama from the makers of ITV’s Vera. Two episodes of writer Paul Rutman’s series are out now on Apple TV+, with the rest to follow weekly on Wednesdays until February 21. Has Jumbo’s DS Lenker stumbled on a corrupt ring of racist cops led by Capaldi’s Dci Dan Hegarty, or is she putting two and two together to make five?
Your take on the ‘Is Hegarty a baddie?...

Marking the directorial debut of Tom Moran – whose Amazon thriller series The Devil’s Hour picked up an International Emmy nomination for Best Drama this week – Romanesco is a wonderfully mind-boggling piece of philosophical cinema. It finds a young woman trapped in an infinite dream with no means of escape. The people around her appear to be on a loop, the scenarios inside the dream are constantly repeating themselves, and the hard boiled egg she’s trying to eat confounds her expectations every time it’s peeled. Inside this discombobulating chaos, however, is a large existential question, and despite the sizeable array of meta-elements Moran’s direction is expertly precise and the story unfurls in a way that is immensely pleasurable to follow. Dn is delighted to premiere Romanesco online, alongside an illuminating conversation with Moran about its swift yet immensely fruitful production and seeing how audiences worldwide unpack its many mysteries.

Amazon has said its investments have contributed £4.8 billion ($6.1 billion) of gross value — and 16,000 jobs — to the U.K. economy since 2010. This covers the gamut of the online retail giant’s various subsidiaries, including Kindle Direct Publishing, Amazon Publishing, Prime Video, Audible, Amazon Fashion, Amazon Music and Amazon Games, among others.
Overall, the company — which revealed the figures on Wednesday — has invested more than £4.2 billion in U.K. creative industries since 2010, and has doubled its investment since 2018.
As Prime Video continues to embed in the U.K. creative sector, it can also count the British Film Institute as its next stop. A number of the streamer’s U.K.-shot originals, including “Good Omens” and “Clarkson’s Farm,” will be digitally preserved in the BFI National Archive as part of a new partnership. The place you order replacement phone charger cables and bulk toilet paper from, making TV shows? Oh, how we laughed back in 2014! What kind of shows would Amazon make? The Loneliness of the Long Distance Delivery Driver? Warehouse Wars? Sorry We Missed You: a dating show where contestants can only speak through a letterbox?.
We were idiots in 2014. In almost a decade, Prime Video – as it’s now styled – has invested in some of the best drama around. It hasn’t stuck to one genre or poured everything into a single big-hitter, but has commissioned widely and mostly, very well. There have been bold sci-fi and alt-history that doesn’t pull its punches, from The Man in the High Castle to The Underground Railroad and The Power, as well as culture-redefining LGBTQ+ shows like Transparent, zany comedies like Mozart in the Jungle, action thrillers Reacher and Jack Ryan, and cool collaborations like Swarm.

Crime dramas can sit on a pretty broad spectrum: some are campy, cosy and even comfortingly formulaic, whereas others make you need to sleep with the light on. The one guarantee is that in the UK at least, there’s such an appetite for detectives and crime stories that TV will never run out of new cases to solve.
We’ve already had some top examples in 2023, from the Happy Valley and Endeavour finales to the excellent Belfast-based Blue Lights, but there are plenty more fresh crime dramas on the way, from police procedurals to true crime and murder mysteries. See what’s coming up below.
After The Flood
Very much what it says on the tin, After The Flood begins… after a flood, which devastates a town, but when the waters clear they leave behind an unidentified dead man in the lift of an underground car park. PC Joanna Marshall is on the case,...

Undercover detectives, maverick detectives, teenage detectives, comedy detectives… there’ll be no shortage of sleuths on the small screen in 2023 and beyond, or of complex, multi-episode crimes for them to solve. This year and next, a gaggle of movie star names will be appearing on both sides of TV’s police interrogation table, including Jodie Foster (in True Detective), Benedict Cumberbatch (in Eric), Nicole Kidman (in Lioness), Jon Hamm (in Fargo) and Meryl Streep (in Only Murders in the Building).
There’s also a raft of promising-sounding new and returning British detective commissions on the way, from true crime drama The Sixth Commandment starring Timothy Spall, to the return of BBC hit Vigil, spooky Prime Video brain-twister The Devil’s Hour, and good old Shetland. Find your next crime mystery obsession below.
The majority of the titles featured are still awaiting official release dates. We’ll add more info as soon...

Exclusive: Line Of Duty star Anna Maxwell Martin and Vigil actor Shaun Evans are to headline an ITV true crime series about a woman who escapes a near-fatal relationship with a murderer.

Delia Balmer (working title) is produced by ITV Studios-backed World Productions, which made Bodyguard and Line of Duty. Based on Balmer’s book Living with a Serial Killer, the four-part series is written by Nick Stevens, who penned Luke Evans drama The Pembrokeshire Murders.

“Sherlock” producers Hartswood Films have posted revenues of £51.7 million (61.6 million) for the last financial year.
Net profit for the year came to £7.8 million (9.5 million), a result the company’s directors said they were “very satisfied with,” although the financial report notes that gross profit margin dropped from 29 to 19 compared to the previous year.
The decrease in gross profit margin was put down to “a change in mix of income from the previous year, with proportionately less income arising from redistributions, and more income arising from development and production activity.”
The accounts, which cover the year ending March 31, 2022, were filed with the registrar at Companies House in December 2022.
As required by Companies House, the financial report also addresses the current risks in the market, with Hartswood defining them as “the increased pressure to find available studios and talent; pressure from commissioners and audience expectation driving budgets ever higher without increased available finance,...

Taskmaster seems to be one of those magically perfect TV shows, but of course the root of its genius isn’t magic at all: it’s a whip-smart combination of Alex Horne’s original format, the comedic force of nature that is Greg Davies in the role of the Taskmaster, and relentlessly good casting.
As we’ve said before, there’s no such thing as a bad series of Taskmaster, and we’re sure Series 15 will be no different, but until it arrives, what should fans fill their time watching?

If police drama remains the bedrock of British TV commissions, with 2022 having welcomed crime series Karen Pirie, Marlow, Magpie Murders, The Responder, Sherwood and many more, broadcasters also gave us a glittering seam of new fantasy and horror. Last year saw a host of new British supernatural and sci-fi series, from Joe Barton’s sci-fi action-thriller The Lazarus Project and the criminally since-cancelled YA Netflix fantasy The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself, BBC Three teen horror Red Rose, Sky dark comedy The Baby, as well as a new telling of John Wyndham’s spooky children classic The Midwich Cuckoos.
Then there were shows that combined both threads, such as Amazon Prime’s mind-twisting The Devil’s Hour starring Peter Capaldi and Jessica Raine, and Pete Jackson’s excellent debut Somewhere Boy. And some new British TV shows didn’t even feature a single murder, like Netflix’s adored Heartstopper graphic novel adaptation.

The company was launched earlier this year by Winchester, backed by Power of the Dog producer See-Saw and talent agency Hamilton Hodell. Winchester spent three-and-a-half years as President of David Heyman’s Heyday, overseeing the likes of Netflix’s Clickbait and hiring teams in London and LA.
Former Heyday Television President Tom Winchester’s fledgling See-Saw Films-backed indie Pure Fiction Television has signed Euston Films and Urban Myths Films execs in its first major play. Euston’s Laura Klimke joins as Executive Producer and former Urban Myth Development Exec Yolanda Lee becomes Development Executive. The Tudor dynasty is the TV gift that just keeps on giving. Ever since the breakout hit of Showtime's 2007 period drama "The Tudors," many a network has followed in their footsteps by sinking some cash into the world of frilled shirts, looming castles, and royal extravagance. The only thing more exciting than the realism and royal schadenfreude of "The Crown" is when you mix political and personal drama, dial up the dramatics and make it extra sexy. Over the years, the result has been a dozen different period dramas taking this approach (hence our post-"Bridgerton" world).
But "Becoming Elizabeth" offered a refreshing change of pace. Though it once again traces the Tudor story through the eyes of Queen Elizabeth I, the series created by Anya Reiss prioritizes Elizabeth's personal experience over the epic history being made in her lifetime.

One of Amazon Prime’s most recent releases, The Devil’s Hour premiered on 28th October, and is a twisty, high-concept thriller that will keep you guessing all the way through its six episodes.
The series is written by Tom Moran, and comes from the team behind Sherlock and Dracula, including former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat. The plot centres on a troubled woman who wakes up every night at 3.33am – the so-called devil’s hour – and sees terrifying visions, which get her caught up in a series of brutal murders and a disappearance from many years ago.
The show boasts an impressive lineup of acting talent – so let’s meet the cast of The Devil’s Hour:
Peter Capaldi as Gideon Shepherd
Capaldi plays the reclusive Gideon, an apparently murderous obsessive on a mission, and a mysterious, enigmatic figure. We’ve recently rounded up Peter Capaldi’s best roles, but...

Never judge a book by its cover, they say, and perhaps the same is true for TV. The BBC’s new Sunday night thriller – Sas Rogue Heroes, based on the book by prolific popular historian Ben Macintyre – is saddled with a name so naff that it conjures images either of video game stealth missions or Ant Middleton dangling celebrities off cliffs by their toenails. In point of fact, Sas Rogue Heroes is something of a prestige drama – albeit one imbued with a streak of deep tackiness that befits its title.
It’s 1941, Egypt, and this is the story of three men: David Stirling (Sex Education’s Connor Swindells), a toff burdened with horrific levels of self-confidence, Jock Lewes (Game of Thrones’s Alfie Allen), a “mad martinet”, and Paddy Mayne (Starred Up’s Jack O’Connell), an Irishman with a reckless propensity for chaos. Together, they will found the Sas, via a series of alcohol-fuelled shenanigans.

I suppose if Top Gear were a car it would be powered by a frenetic three-cylinder engine. It would be supercharged and turbocharged, still with plenty of go, though misfiring at times. It would have a slightly weary superstructure, suffering from a little metal fatigue and the odd spot of corrosion. Nothing serious, you understand, but in need of attention.
So the first of the latest series (its 33rd) is very much the typical formula, with all its strengths and weaknesses. The lucky trio of presenters – Freddie Flintoff, Chris Harris and Paddy McGuinness – get to explore the car culture of Thailand, which is just as fascinating as you’d expect. Funnily enough, I reviewed the new Isuzu D-Max pick-up myself recently – a tidy enough drive for a diesel commercial vehicle – but never dreamt it could be raced and rallied with quite the aplomb it clearly is in the beautiful jungles of Indochina.

Not only the Twelfth Doctor, but also an Oscar-winnning writer-director for his short film Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life, Peter Capaldi’s career spans almost four decades of impressive, inventive performances. Capaldi first truly captured the nation’s heart when he became sweary spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It in 2005, a role that could only be eclipsed for some by his stint in the Tardis.
After three glorious years of his Doctor, a terrific turn in The Personal History of David Copperfield, and popping up in the comic book world of The Suicide Squad, Capaldi’s latest venture – thriller The Devil’s Hour – is out now on Prime Video and reminding us what makes him so captivating on screen. Let’s revisit some of Peter Capaldi’s finest performances.

Warning: contains Major spoilers for The Devil’s Hour finale.
To say that The Devil’s Hour packed a lot in to its six-hour story would be an understatement. There was a serial killer thriller, a ghostly horror, a child abduction mystery, a love story, a gangland crime tale and a family drama… all wrapped up in existential Nietzschean philosophy. By the end, it was a little of Life After Life plus a little of The Time Traveler’s Wife plus a little of Quantum Leap plus a little of Marcella plus a lot of other ideas given not quite enough room to breathe. As a result some viewers could well be left thinking… what?
With major spoilers (please don’t read on until you’ve watched it all) for the finale and everything that came before, here’s our best attempt to break down just what went on, what we know, and...
