Netflix added nearly 30 million global paid subscribers in 2023, though it might have watered down its hit pool in the process.
According to a new study by British streaming-data company Digital i, Netflix had fewer than half the global hits in 2023 (10) than it had in 2022 (22). Digital i defines a “hit” as an original movie or a series that was watched by at least 30 percent of Netflix’s subscriber base in North America, EU, and Latam.
The long list of 2022 Netflix hits goes like this: “Wednesday” (61.8%), “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” (53.3%), “Stranger Things 4” (48.0%), “The Adam Project” (47.9%), “Knives Out 2” (45.9%), “The Gray Man” (42.4%), “The Watcher” (41.9%), “The Tinder Swindler” (38.0%), “Inventing Anna” (37.5%), “The Sandman” (35.7%), “Senior Year” (35.6%), “1899” (34.7%), “Bridgerton” Season 2 (34.5%), “Troll” (34.0%), “Enola Holmes 2” (33.7%), “Luckiest Girl Alive” (33.4%), “Harry & Meghan” (32.7%), “Hustle” (32.6%), “The Man from Toronto” (31.5%), “Purple Hearts” (31.3%), “Me Time” (31.1%), “Day Shift” (31.0%), and “Falling for Christmas” (30.8%).

More and more pop culture figures are slipping into the public domain, allowing anyone to reinterpret beloved characters. In 2022, Winnie-The-Pooh entered the public domain, and our cherished childhood friend was made into a vicious slasher villain at the center of a humorless bloodbath of a film, "Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood And Honey." Meanwhile, Disney has so far managed to successfully prevent Mickey Mouse from entering the public domain despite the copyright partially expiring, while Superman and other iconic superheroes move closer and closer to becoming public IP.
In the case of another prominent pop culture figure, Sherlock Holmes, many of the stories featuring Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective entered the public domain some time ago. Copyright typically lasts for the duration of an author's life plus 70 years, 120 years from the date of their creation, or 95 years from their publication date — whichever comes soonest. Doyle passed away in 1930, and a lot...

Millie Bobby Brown’s latest star turn for Netflix is Damsel, a fantasy action adventure that arrives in just a few months.
Thanks to Netflix now choosing to release viewing hours for all of its film and TV programming, we now know that between January and June of this year, the YA take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s collection of detective tales, Enola Holmes 2, racked up over 30m hours worth of viewing. That places the film somewhere in Netflix’s top 600, but doesn’t account for the initial (and presumably huge) viewership spike when the film first launched (since it released in November of 2022).
Enola Holmes 2 was led by Millie Bobby Brown, who continues to be a major part of the streaming platform’s plans.

Millie Bobby Brown dazzled fans everywhere with her performance in "Enola Holmes 2," which premiered on Netflix on Nov. 4, 2022. Still, the movie left fans with one major question: will there be an "Enola Holmes 3"? It seems like the odds are pretty good, because on Nov. 7, Collider reported that a screenplay for a third installment was in the works.
The news came via an interview with the head of Netflix Film, Scott Stuber, who also praised Brown's performance. "You know, she's such a great homegrown star for us," he told Collider of Brown. "I mean, obviously, 'Stranger Things' is huge for us in that, and watching her grow as an actress . . ." He also hinted at a possible third Enola Holmes movie. "The Holmes IP is weirdly elastic. Obviously, Warner Bros. did an incredible job with Downey and Jude Law, so this idea that we can extend that IP with her is exciting,...

Since she became a household name for her role as Eleven on Netflix's "Stranger Things," fans have been curious about Millie Bobby Brown's personal life, especially now that she's engaged. While the actor may have garnered more buzz in light of "Stranger Things"'s season four release, she's also generated attention for her sweet relationship with Jake Bongiovi.
In an Oct. 16 interview with Glamour, Brown opened up about what made her realize Bongiovi was the one. She entered the relationship shortly after getting out of what she described as an "unhealthy situation" with TikToker Hunter Ecimovic, who later claimed he had groomed Brown and made other disparaging comments before eventually apologizing. The ordeal made Brown feel "publicly humiliated," she told the outlet.

In the Harry Potter movies, the evil villain Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) is obsessed with racial purity. It seems that magical ability is a genetic trait in the Wizarding World, and two magical parents typically have magical children. Occasionally, though, magical children will be born to non-magical -- or muggle -- parents. Voldemort sought to murder any children with muggle blood and leave only his wicked Death Eater cult standing. The films' dark themes of eugenics aren't too openly discussed in dialogue, however, and none of the Harry Potter characters draw a parallel between Voldemort and, say, Adolf Hitler. They're too busy evading capture and seeking magical Horcruxes to stop and talk.
One of Voldemort's disciples is a wicked witch named Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter), who is introduced while serving a hefty sentence in Azkaban prison. In the series' fifth film -- David Yates' "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix...

The Enola Holmes movies, loosely inspired by Nancy Springer’s novels, bring about several changes when they hit the big screen. While Enola Holmes stays true to the novel, delving into the life of Enola Holmes, an intrepid teen on the hunt for her missing mother, Enola Holmes 2 brings an entirely different spin to the story. It follows the story of a missing girl and the matchgirl strike in the 19th century. The films star Millie Bobby Brown as Enola Holmes and Henry Cavill as her older brother Sherlock Holmes, making it to Netflix’s top ten charts. Understandably so, given the...

In an interview with Andy Cohen on Cohen’s SiriusXM show, Radio Andy, Cohen congratulated Bon Jovi on his 20-year-old son Jake Bongiovi’s reported engagement to 19-year-old Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown.
After the musician noted that Bongiovi is just “the latest” of his children to get engaged as three of his four are set to be married, Cohen asked whether he worries his child is too young for marriage despite the musician himself finding love young and marrying his high school sweetheart, Dorothea.

He added, “I think that all of my kids have found the people that they think they can grow together with and we like them all.

Netflix still spends a small fortune on content. But relatively speaking, the streamer in 2022 kept a lid on payments for TV shows and movies — underscoring that the days of runaway spending on programming are behind it.
Last year, the streamer paid out 16.84 billion on a cash basis for content, which was 4.9 less than in 2021, when it shelled out 17.70 billion, according to Netflix’s financial statements released Thursday for its fourth-quarter earnings report.
Netflix’s content obligations — payments for the acquisition, licensing and production of content over multiyear periods — also declined last year, dropping 5.7, from 23.16 billion to 21.83 billion.
The steady-state in content spending, along with other cost reductions (including layoffs and slower hiring), led Netflix to project a “sustained” trajectory of growth in free cash flow. “Now that we are a decade into our original programming initiative and have successfully scaled it, we are past the most cash-intensive phase of this buildout,...

It’s a “knife” fight for the top spot in streaming this week. Netflix’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” starring Daniel Craig, and Amazon Prime Video’s long-awaited third season premiere of “Jack Ryan,” led by John Krasinski, battled it out, but ultimately the “Knives Out” sequel prevailed in this week’s edition of Samba TV’s Weekly Wrap report.

It’s no mystery what audiences were watching on Netflix over the holiday weekend.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery made its way to the top of Netflix’s English-language film chart for the week of December 19 to December 25, after debuting on the streamer two days before Christmas. Rian Johnson‘s comedy sequel notched 82.1M hours viewed in those two days, which Netflix says equates to about 35M households.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio fell to No. 3, as The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari took second place with 25.1M hours viewed. Viewers were certainly in the holiday spirit, as the list was rounded out by mostly Christmas films including How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Bad Moms Christmas, and Falling For Christmas.
As for the TV side of things, Emily in Paris Season 3 debuted on December 21 and has collected 117.6M hours viewed, making it No. 2 on the U.S. English-language chart.

According to Deadline, Legendary Entertainment has just inked a new deal with Sony. The agreement comes in the wake of Legendary's expired deal with Warner Bros., which in recent years brought us films like "Detective Pikachu" and "Godzilla vs. Kong." The new deal with Sony, which the outlet describes as a "multi-year worldwide film distribution partnership," will be a major one for the company, whose big-budget, spectacle-oriented films were potentially hamstrung at the box office by Warner Bros.' surprise 2020 decision to release its films day-and-date on HBO Max.
The new deal will give Legendary the theatrical-centric model that seems to be a great fit for the films that have made it a success in the past, like "The Dark Knight," "Inception," and "Jurassic World." Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group is one of very few major Hollywood players that doesn't currently have its own streaming service, meaning the films we'll...

Legendary Entertainment, the production company behind “Dune” and “Godzilla vs. Kong,” has cut ties with Warner Bros. and entered a multi-year worldwide film distribution partnership with Sony Pictures.
Under the new agreement, Sony will market and distribute Legendary’s upcoming theatrical motion picture titles. However, select existing projects at Legendary are exempt from the pact, meaning Warner Bros. Pictures is still backing “Dune: Part Two.” The sequel to 2021’s sci-fi adaptation “Dune” is currently in production and slated for release on Nov. 3, 2023.
In a press release, Sony Pictures and Legendary emphasized that the companies are aligned in their “ongoing commitment to theatrical distribution as a driver for other ‘downstream’ windows and the theatrical window’s long-term value for films.”
That sentiment may be a not-so-subtle nod to Legendary’s public spat with Warner Bros. in late 2020. At the time, the production company threatened to take legal action over Warners.’ decision...

It’s the week of Thanksgiving… but movie fans are already getting prepared for Christmas, according to Whip Media’s latest movie ranker. (Or maybe the Lindsday Lohan renaissance is just in full swing now.)
“Falling for Christmas,” the new Netflix holiday rom-com starring Lohan and Chord Overstreet, was the most streamed movie in the U.S. last weekend, according to Whip Media’s viewer data. The flick, directed by Janeen Damien, was in second place the week prior; it ended up leapfrogging another strong recent performer for Netflix – “Enola Holmes 2,” which had been the most streamed movie for two straight weeks.
Overall, Netflix claimed 4 of the top 10 most streamed movies of the week – down two films from last week.

Peacock made a big splash via its first appearance on last week’s Nielsen weekly ratings chart, placing first among all movies for the week of Oct. 16 with Universal’s “Halloween Ends” — and proof positive that a simultaneous release on streaming doesn’t automatically cannibalize theatrical revenue potential.
Nielsen reported that “Halloween Ends” achieved 717 million minutes viewed in the first three days of its availability on NBCUniversal’s Peacock. In the same weekend, the final film in the new Jamie Lee Curtis-led trilogy also topped the domestic box office, debuting with 40 million. The poorly-reviewed film, (with a 41 score on Rotten Tomatoes) maxed out at 65 million domestic when it left theaters last Thursday — and 103 million worldwide, on a 33 million budget.
“Horror movies are tailor-made for the communal movie theater experience,” Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian said. “Nonetheless, ‘Halloween Ends’ enjoyed solid results on the big screen and small screen simultaneously.

“Smile” (19.99), Paramount’s sleeper original horror hit, debuted on PVOD 45 days into release. After grossing an unexpected 105 million domestic gross so far, plus even more overseas, the 17 million production should have been expected to be an easy #1 on all VOD charts.
Instead, it leads only at Vudu, where its premium price guaranteed a #1 position with that site ranking by revenue, not transactions. It is currently #5 at Google Play, and #10 at iTunes (where it earlier peaked at #4), and there only by not including a five-film “Pirates of the Caribbean” package that sits at #8.
So, what happened?
The easiest explanation is that, unlike when the studio placed “Top Gun: Maverick” on VOD platforms, “Smile” is also streaming on Paramount + free for subscribers. That hasn’t been the norm recently, as studios like Universal (Peacock), Disney (Disney +), and Warner Bros. Discovery (HBO Max) have tended to take the lucrative cash from a...

The two basic-cable channels and the streaming giant notoriously go in on made-for-tv holiday movies, and this yuletide time will be no exception. But just how crucial to their respective (and very different) businesses is this type of programming, this time of year?
For Hallmark Channel, as is the case for its namesake greeting-card business, December is truly a time to be merry. This year’s “Countdown to Christmas” will premiere 31 new holiday films on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Hallmark Channel’s primetime viewership in the fourth quarter of 2021 was 54 percent higher than in Q3, 62 percent higher than Q2, and 27 percent higher than Q1, according to Nielsen data. The first quarter comes closest to the last for a few reasons: 1) Christmas-movie catch-up viewing, and 2) Another programming stunt: “New Year New Movies!”

Sherlock and Mycroft are old news — the new star of the Holmes family is their forgotten teenage sister. Based on the Nancy Springer young adult book series, "Enola Holmes" features Millie Bobby Brown as both star and producer, putting her charisma on full display as the super smart, norm-shattering, corset-loathing detective who's taking Victorian London by storm. And while she is the undeniable star of this franchise, she must occasionally share the spotlight with her famous older brother, Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill) — an addition that makes Enola's adventures extra exciting.
This is Sherlock Holmes as we've never seen him before: navigating the endless struggle of being a middle child, with his little sister always on the verge of outsmarting him.
Together, Enola and Sherlock are this franchise's most exciting duo. Once you're done swooning over her every interaction with the fanciful Lord Tewkesbury then prepare for the utter chaos...

Before donning Superman’s cape once more, Henry Cavill reprised a different, but also well-known role with quite the fandom — Sherlock Holmes.
In Netflix’s “Enola Holmes 2,” Cavill portrays Sherlock, but as seen through the lens of his younger sister Enola (Millie Bobby Brown), who stars in the sequel. Which means that despite that post-credits scene, a Henry Cavill Sherlock movie isn’t likely in the cards.
Director Harry Bradbeer discussed how the post-credits introduction of Watson presents a foil for Sherlock, though Enola foils her brother in her own way as well. While Enola finds love with Lord Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge) after solving her case, the theme of Sherlock’s loneliness remains, and she worries for her brother.

Millie Bobby Brown is terrific in everything that she does. She was only nine years old when she made her acting debut on ABC's "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland," giving an endearing performance as young Alice in the inspired adaptation of the popular Lewis Carroll-created universe. Her performances throughout the "Godzilla" films, "Enola Holmes," and her career-defining role as Eleven in Netflix's "Stranger Things," a young girl with psychokinetic and telepathic abilities, only solidified her position as an incredibly talented actress. Along with being a performer, Bobby Brown has dived into the beauty industry, worked as a Unicef ambassador, and is the youngest person to be listed on Time's 100 most influential people in the world. In everything she does, she is a constant source of inspiration to teens. There's nothing Bobby Brown cannot do if she puts her mind to it — and it appears the young actress...

Millie Bobby Brown and Jake Bongiovi are getting even cozier for the holidays. A few weeks after attending the "Enola Holmes 2" premiere together in New York, the couple shared a sweet video of themselves decorating a Christmas tree. The "Stranger Things" star captioned her post, "all I want for Christmas is uuuuuuuuuu."
In the candid time-lapse video, the duo add ornaments and ribbon to a tree as they wear matching Disney pajamas. They share a tender hug at one point and also share some love with Brown's cat and dog. The Mariah Carey song that inspired Brown's caption of course plays in the video. Funnily enough, Brown has formed a friendship with Carey in recent years, and in a recent "Tonight Show" interview, she said a music collaboration isn't entirely off the table.

Millie Bobby Brown surprised fans with a candid claim about her Stranger Things co-star Finn Wolfhard.
The Enola Holmes 2 actor, who plays Eleven in the Netflix series, took a lie detector test as part of an interview, and was asked about previous comments she made about her kissing scenes with Wolfhard.
Brown previously said of her co-star, who plays Mike Wheeler: “His kissing sucks.”
Addressing Brown’s comment, Vanity Fairasked her: “Is Finn just a lousy kisser?” – and she didn’t hold back.
“He is,” she said, without missing a beat, and the lie detector test deemed her answer to be true.
The outlet then asked her: “So he hasn’t gotten better?” to which Brown stated: “Not witH me, no”.
Again, the lie detector stated she was telling the truth.
When it was pointed out that Wolfhard would find out what she said, the 18-year-old did not seem to mind.
