The past several years have seen several buzzworthy horror films released — but none has been more controversial than the 2023 flick, Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey.
The slasher retelling of the beloved children’s stories made the rounds on social media well before it was released, drumming up significant fan interest. When the movie was released, it became a surprise hit. It prompted a sequel order and many positive responses from horror fans.
While many are already making plans to see the sequel, citizens of China shouldn’t expect to catch it in theaters. The country banned Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey for a rather interesting reason.

Rhys Frake-Waterfield's new slasher film "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey," while not stellar, has a novel premise. A.A. Milne's beloved characters Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, Owl, and Eeyore are not Christopher Robin's cuddly, talking stuffed animals, but strange, mutant animal/human hybrids that have taken up residence in the 100-Acre Wood. For years, Christopher Robin would bring his animal friends food, but when he goes away to college — and the winter winds descend — Pooh and his pals go feral from hunger and abandonment. They end up eating Eeyore, going insane, and turning into human-averse killing machines. Decades later, Pooh and Piglet have more or less become Jason Voorhees or Leatherface.
"Blood and Honey" is a film that comes wearing its gimmick on its sleeve. How novel, one might think, to see an otherwise innocent and childlike character like Winnie-the-Pooh shoving a young ingenue's face through a pane of glass. When...

At the outset of Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, an independent horror film that makes feral killers out of the cuddly animals from beloved children’s books, you hope for some entertaining grindhouse slasher. Two minutes in, you’re reduced to praying that it’s “so bad it’s good.” And by the time Pooh shoves a woman into a woodchipper, her legs still flailing as she’s butchered, you have to admit there’s no redeeming this hack job. Blood and Honey is a hundred-acre wasteland, a witless gory bore,...

Regardless of your interest in a movie about Pooh Bear and Piglet slaughtering scantily-clad hot tub enjoyers, there’s no denying that Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey offers a compelling look at the future of storytelling. For decades, the Walt Disney Corporation has controlled stories about Pooh and the gang from the Hundred Acre Wood, overtaking in the public consciousness even depictions by the characters’ creators A.A. Milne and E.H. Shepard.
But when their 1926 book Winnie-the-Pooh entered the public domain in 2022, creatives like Blood and Honey director Rhys Frake-Waterfield got the chance to put their own spin on the willy nilly silly ol’ bear. Frake-Waterfield has already indicated that he plans to keep working with public domain characters, including not only Pooh but also Bambi and Peter Pan.

Plot: After Christopher Robin abandons them for college, Pooh and Piglet embark on a bloody rampage as they search for a new source of food.
Review: A group of high school students left my showing of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey after about thirty minutes. So that should tell you the level of quality we’re dealing with here. Even a group of cackling teenagers didn’t care for this nonsensical horror tale. When Winnie the Pooh entered the public domain, I knew we would be in for some really bad adaptations but I really didn’t expect the horror world to take to it so quickly. I guess that makes me blissfully ignorant because not only did they take to it, but they did it with the least amount of money possible. And boy does it show.

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse | UK | 35 minutes
You can’t go wrong with a children’s story contending you are worthy of life just the way you are. It’s the sort of heavy subject matter that could very quickly move towards suicidal ideation, so you do have to applaud Charlie Mackesy for approaching from a place of compassion, empathy, and––most of all––youth. So when Boy (Jude Coward Nicoll) suddenly finds himself unable to control his tears after an error in judgment that leaves no one the worse for wear, all he needs is a gentle reminder from his new friends that crying is a strength rather than weakness. Those tears are necessary and meaningful. They should be felt, understood, accepted.

The Hundred Acre Wood has seen some pretty unsettling things over the years. A honey jar shortage. Rather blustery days. The omnipresent threat of a Heffalump.
But in “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,” a new microbudget R-rated horror film, Pooh wades into far darker territory than even Eeyore could have ever imagined. After 95 years of saying things like “A hug is always the right size,” Pooh — newly freed from copyright — is now violently terrorizing a remote house of young women.
Countless cherished characters have passed into public domain before, but perhaps never so abruptly and savagely as Pooh.
Pooh, Piglet, Kanga, Roo, Owl, Eeyore and Christopher Robin all became public domain on January 1 last year when the copyright on A.A. Milne’s 1926 book, “Winnie-the-Pooh,” with illustrations by E.H. Shepard, expired. Just a year later, Pooh and Piglet can now be found on a murderous rampage in nationwide movie theaters...

Director Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey will be getting a nine day theatrical release though Fathom Events in the US on February 15th – but a couple weeks away from that date, Frake-Waterfield has revealed that he’s already working on a sequel! And while developing the follow-up, he’s drawing inspiration from last year’s indie hit Terrifier 2…
Speaking with SFX Magazine (we send our thanks out to Games Radar for spreading the word), Frake-Waterfield said that he had Halloween, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Wrong Turn on his mind while he was crafting Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. “And as we’re going into the sequel soon, Terrifier 2 is going to be one of my key reference points. I want to make sure I go as big and epic as they went with that. I want to try and push it even more.

Winnie the Pooh, Winnie the Pooh, willy, silly, old bear is coming for you! One imagines that the filmmakers behind Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey would absolutely love to include lyrics like those above in their new Winnie the Pooh slasher movie. It’d be as if Disneyland’s Main Street intersected with Freddy Kreuger’s Elm! However, for much of the same reason that “Winnie-the-Pooh” is nigh unrecognizable in the Blood and Honey trailer, there’s a reason you’ll never hear the above riff on the iconic song in the new movie: the filmmakers behind Blood and Honey legally aren’t allowed to use it.
Indeed, the below Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey trailer hit the internet like a ton of bricks Wednesday morning when it revealed relatively modest (and formulaic) scares going down in the Hundred Acre Wood, with Winnie and his pal Piglet hunting and seemingly...

When I came across this trailer it proved a point I was telling people a few years ago. I just had this feeling, but I predicted that if Jennifer Hudson wasn’t careful, she would be stuck in a rut, playing those “sassy, opinionated best black friend of white people” roles. The kind of role where her character doesn’t have a life outside of worrying about her white friends, and making sure she helps them solve their problems. She did that in the first Sex in the City movie, and now she’s doing it again as the sassy opinionated nurse in the upcoming indie drama, Lullaby, which comes out in June.True, she has played other roles, such as Winnie Mandela and the drug addicted mother in...

"...this intimate, in-depth and unbiased film takes the audience on a remarkable journey of understanding 'Winnie Mandela', exploring both her personal and political life.
"Through her fierce determination and dauntless courage, Winnie Mandela survived her husband's imprisonment, continuous harassment by the security police, banishment to a small 'Free State' town, betrayal by friends and allies, and more than a year in solitary confinement - all the while keeping the name of 'Nelson Mandela' alive.
"A sensitive and balanced portrayal, the film nevertheless thoroughly investigates and honestly examines the controversies that dogged Winnie Mandela in recent years..."

Selena’s turn as a gun-toting, car-almost-jacking thrill-seeker on the big screen has earned her a major nomination!

In film, the role of the former Anc activist and president of South Africa has traditionally been approached with great reverence
The voice. The gentle, mysterious smile. The walk – generally an older man's walk, across a garden, or presidential office, or prison exercise yard. The enigmatically polite manner: intimidating, even awe-inspiring for allies and adversaries alike. The list of actors who have tried all this is long: Morgan Freeman, David Harewood, Terrence Howard, Danny Glover, Sidney Poitier, Clarke Peters, Dennis Haysbert, Idris Elba – and Lindane Nkosi, the one South African actor who has managed to make some sort of impression as this character in Anglo-Hollywood circles, for a film called Drum, about the 1950s anti-apartheid campaign, that played at festivals in London and Cannes.

Former South African president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela died Thursday afternoon, and the outpouring of appreciation for his global contributions from Hollywood was swift. Hollywood’s connection has never been closer – Mandela is the subject of the hotly anticipated “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” starring Idris Elba as the icon, and the love story between Mandela and wife Winnie was featured in September release “Winnie Mandela,” starring Terrence Howard and Jennifer Hudson. Nelson Mandela passed away Thursday at the age of 95. Imprisoned from 1962 to 1990, the former South African president (1994-1999) fought to abolish apartheid and worked to end poverty. Known as “The Father of a Nation” the celebrated leader was the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize winner and received the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom, among many other honors.
It’s no surprise that his inspirational story has made its way to the big screen. In addition to the current film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which is in theaters now, the South African leader has been the subject of several feature films and documentaries in recent years.

Td Jakes (via his Tdj Enterprises) "presents" Winnie Mandela, which is produced by André Pieterse (Ironwood Films) and Michael Mosca (Equinoxe Films). An adaptation of Anné Mariè du Preez Bezdrob’s biography Winnie Mandela: A Life, the film explores the personal and political life of the wife...

With "Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom" now playing in theaters, here's a reminder that there was another person standing by Nelson Mandela's side in the struggle to rid South Africa of Apartheid, and she too has her own movie. "Winnie Mandela" is on its way to home video and we've got a few copies for some lucky readers along with one big grand prize. Directed by Darrell J. Roodt ("Sarafina," "Cry The Beloved Country"), the film stars singer/actress Jennifer Hudson in the title role, the will the tell the story of a young Winnie, who finds love with Nelson Mandela (played by Terrence Howard) and continues his message of protest and resistance against a brutal Apartheid government, when Nelson gets imprisoned. For those looking to fill in the corners of the cinematic story in 'Long Walk To Freedom,' this might help. And we've got a poster signed...

Half Nelson: Chadwick’s Biopic Stretched Thin
An attempt to cover fifty years in the life of South African President Nelson Mandela in the time span of two and a half hours seems as exhausting to sit through as it was daunting to piece together, even if it is based on Mandela’s own autobiography. To their credit, Justin Chadwick and screenwriter William Nicholson have made a well-paced film, albeit one that gives us a rudimentary glance at Mandela’s development, doggedly comprehensive without taking any opportunities for depth or subtlety. Its rather conservative depiction of apartheid further places the film into a textbook category and seems an appropriate and elementary learning tool for those ignorant of the subject matter. Despite adhering to the trappings of generalization as seen in many genuinely produced biopics that would have been better served by sticking to one particular moment or period, Chadwick...

Terrence Howard has been very vocal about his dismissal from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in recent years. After appearing in the original Iron Man, he was replaced by Don Cheadle for Iron Man 2. Apparently, he didn’t realize that the contract wasn’t “mutually binding” and that Marvel, despite making a multi-picture deal with him, still had the final say on whether they would bring him back or not.
For Iron Man 2, Howard was set to earn $8 million, which is a huge bump over the $4.5 million that he earned for the first one. Unfortunately for him though, Robert Downey Jr. got a bit greedy and took the money that was supposed to go to Howard.
“It turns out that the person that I helped become Iron Man, when it was time to re-up for the second one, took the money that was supposed to go to me and pushed me out,...

London-born actor says playing former president in Long Walk To Freedom was 'a massive responsibility'
He could hardly be described as Nelson Mandela's spitting image, but when the British actor Idris Elba arrived at the South African premiere of Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom on Sunday, there was some of the awe and adulation usually reserved for the great statesman himself.
"You can see the sweat! No pressure?" joked Elba, feeling the heat of countless cameraphones as he wiped perspiration from his forehead. "South Africans love their Madiba and it's a massive responsibility to bring him alive in the best possible way."
Playing Mandela is an acting Everest that stars including Morgan Freeman, Danny Glover, David Harewood, Terrence Howard, Clarke Peters and Sidney Poitier have attempted to scale, but none, perhaps, have quite reached the summit. Elba, who grew up in Hackney, east London, has already earned the praise of Mandela's family.

Kicking off the day with some promotional duties, Jennifer Hudson paid a visit to ABC Studios in Times Square, New York City on Wednesday (October 2).
The “Dreamgirls” dame was in the house to plug her new movie “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete” on “Good Morning America,” and was joined by the film’s executive producer/composer Alicia Keys.
During the interview, Jennifer talked about her tendency to seek out difficult projects such as her current film and “Winnie Mandela.”
“That was the challenge in this role, and that was the focus- to be able to stretch myself. This is definitely a story that’s worth being told, so that’s why I had to get in there and find my Gloria, which is what I tried to do.”

There are currently three movies about Lance Armstrong in development (Jay Roach's, J.J. Abrams's, and Stephen Frears's). Earlier in the year, there were two movies about bad guys taking over the White House (Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down), and this past weekend's Winnie Mandela, starring Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard as Winnie and Nelson, is the first of two fall movies about the couple (the Idris Elba and Naomie Harris–starring Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is out in November). This isn't a new phenomenon, but it is a persistent one. We think it needs a proper name — a short, punchy one that we all agree means "movies of very similar subjects that get released around the same time." But what should that name be?Let's quickly run through some famous examples of this phenomenon: Dante's Peak and Volcano (1997), Antz and A Bug's Life (1998), Armageddon...

Upon completion of my first viewing of Darrell Roodt’s Winnie Mandela, I couldn’t help but struggle a little bit. Who exactly is the film for? Surely it can’t be for history buffs – the events of the famous anti-apartheid activist’s life have been heavily glorified here. It makes for a better film, yes, but is a bit bothersome when paralleled with reality. Given its origin from the biography Winnie Mandela: A Life, I imagine anybody serious about gaining an understanding of what Winnie’s actual struggles were like would simply take that work for a spin instead.
Alright, that’s fine then – nobody said films based on reality have to reflect it entirely. As a reviewer, I’m more than okay with sacrifices being made for the sake of telling a great story, or developing compelling characters. Surely the desire to craft a likable and relatable...

Former South African president endorsed casting of The Wire star in official biopic The Long Walk to Freedom, while playing the man gave Elba a new understanding of the word 'patience'
• Mandela: first look review
Even at 93, says the film director Justin Chadwick, Nelson Mandela "radiates electricity". It's a quality he shares with Idris Elba, British-born star of The Wire, who plays Mandela in Chadwick's official biopic. "When you spend time with Idris, you feel that same energy."
The movie, which has premiered at the Toronto film festival, is a respectful epic adapted by William Nicholson from Mandela's autobiography: A Long Walk to Freedom. Mandela also approved the casting, despite the lack of immediate physical resemblance.
The ailing former South African president was shown some scenes at the end of last year on an iPad by producer Anant Singh, who first approached him 25 years ago. "Is that me?...

Winnie Mandela
Written by Darrell Roodt and Andre Pieterse
Directed by Darrell Roodt
Canada/South Africa, 2011
Darrell Roodt’s film Winnie Mandela is an oddity. It’s almost trying to be two movies squeezed into the running time of one: first, a typical biography of the “Mother of the Nation” of South Africa; later, a dark and ambiguous look at some of the horrible things that Winnie Mandela was accused of doing while her husband Nelson served a 27-year prison sentence. Both movies have good intentions but both are also heavily flawed, with awkward tonal shifts and misuse of fine actors. There will be better movies this fall, and worse ones, but no movie this season will be quite so strange.
Roodt (a South African director responsible for the well-received Sarafina! and the vile Dangerous Ground) recruited Academy-recognized talent for this joint Canadian/South African production: Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson...

If only for its refusal to sand down the rough edges of its protagonist’s life, “Winnie Mandela” stands out in a field of movies that offer up sanitized, classroom-ready biographies of famous people. But this is a movie that’s destined to be remembered for proving that Jennifer Hudson’s “Dreamgirls” performance was no fluke; here, she hits a vast array of notes even though she doesn’t get to sing until the final credits. While “Winnie Mandela” mostly connects its plot dots in a purely predictable biopic fashion, writer-director Darrell Roodt (co-scripting with Andre Pieterse, working from the biography by Anne Marie.

The “Dreamgirls” actress was in the house to plug her forthcoming film “Winnie Mandela” about the heroic wife of South African President Nelson Mandela.
Hudson noted that in order to get into the mindset of her character in prison, she decided to confine herself to the jail set for extended periods of time.

Being a mother is a hard enough job, but being saddled with the title "Mother of the Nation" is an unimaginable pressure, a pressure that Jennifer Hudson must have felt to some small degree playing the title character in Winnie Mandela. When her husband, Nelson (Terrence Howard), is imprisoned for organizing anti-Apartheid protests, Winnie keeps up the struggle for freedom in his stead—but, forced to deal with the real world while Nelson is sidelined as a martyr for 27 years, she becomes increasingly radicalized. Compressing a half-century's worth of history, Winnie Mandela makes liberal use of biopic clichés, such as newspaper headlines screaming exposition like "World Leaders Condemn Winnie Mandela" (it's a wonder the papers don't spin as they approach the ...

We've seen Nelson Mandela's life and legacy portrayed on screen numerous times, but what about Winnie Mandela, the woman behind the fight for South African equality?
Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson portrays the influential and controversial anti-apartheid figure in "Winnie Mandela," the first movie to tell her story. The film charts Winnie's relationship with her former husband Nelson, played by Terrence Howard, her 18 month solitary confinement imprisonment, and her criminal convictions.
While "Winnie" first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2011, it is finally being released on September 8. Hudson spoke with Moviefone about the challenges of the role, the controversy surrounding the film, and why Winnie's story is an important one to be told.
Moviefone: There have been several films made about Nelson Mandela's life, but none that solely focused on Winnie. What drew you to the script and why do you think this story needed to be told?...

Behind every man is a great woman.
Regardless of its title, some may be quick to write off "Winnie Mandela" as this fall's "the other Nelson Mandela movie" coming out this fall, but not so fast.
The eponymous biopic focuses on the controversial political actions and imprisonment of South Africa's Mother of the Nation, and devotes less time to her husband's life and achievements.
"Winnie Mandela" stars Jennifer Hudson as the titular South African figure and Terrence Howard, as her husband, the iconic Nelson Mandela. In this exclusive preview, we see a nearly unrecognizable Hudson as Winnie in the midst of her prison sentence. Taken out of her cell, Winnie is forced to stand barefoot on a brick while being questioned and demeaned. But she doesn't give in.
