Hounsou got his start in music videos. He appeared in videos for hitmakers such as En Vogue, Janet Jackson, Madonna, and Tina Turner. Hounsou’s first television acting role was in a 1990 episode of Beverly Hills 90210 titled “Class of Beverly Hills.”
Hounsou got his big break in 1997 after starring in Amistad alongside Morgan Freeman, Anthony Hopkins, and Matthew McConaughey. During an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Stephen Spielberg says he wasn’t going to film the movie unless he found the right lead character. He says he needed a “miracle.” According to him, his prayer was answered when Hounsou showed up for auditions.
“I was looking for a miracle,” says Spielberg.

Starring Léa Seydoux, Mia Hansen-Løve’s “One Fine Morning” won this year’s Europa Cinemas Cannes Label for best European film at the 2022 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight.
Announced Thursday by Europa Cinemas, ahead of the closing ceremony this evening, the prize is one of two at Directors Fortnight, and awarded by one of the sidebar’s partners given the section is non-competitive.
A second partner plaudit, the Sacd Prize, handed out by France’s Writers’ Guild, will be announced later today at an awards ceremony.
“One Fine Morning” was always a frontrunner for a prize at Directors’ Fortnight, though never a shoo-in. The award comes just three days after Sony Pictures Classics announced it had acquired North American, Latin American and Middle East rights to the film.

Carnage would be a broad subject for any artist, especially anyone who has devoted an album solely to the art of the murder ballad. But this is Nick Cave, and in true Bad Seed fashion, there’s a twist: The crime scene here is spiritual rather than corporeal.

As of late, the name Karen has been synonymous with entitlement, bigotry and “I want to speak to a manager” energy. What better way to explore this phenomenon than with a suspense thriller appropriately titled Karen starring Taryn Manning as the titular touchstone of privilege?

Intriguing new documentary I profiled bacn in February when it was said to be in pre-production, from Belgian/Brit Kristof Bilsen - a Congo (Drc)-set documentary feature titled White Elephants, A Congo Trilogy (not to be confused with the 2011 Djimon Hounsou thriller Elephant White), which looks to now currently be in production, with a projected spring 2013 release date possible. The documentary, which is based on a critically-acclaimed short film titled just White Elephants, centers on the Central Post-Office in Kinshasa, and its employees. Here's the synopsis: This grandiose relic of the colonial past has trapped its employees in a frozen timewarp from which...

The Film:
I love when movies are unexpectedly good. Such is the case for Elephant White, a seedy, moody look at human trafficking in Bangkok, yet as the film puts a little twist towards the end, so did I on my first sentence assessment. Elephant White is unexpectedly good, but where were my expectations? Well, I had them adjusted quite fine with the film’s cast of the always solid Djimon Hounsou and Kevin Bacon, but of interest here, even though the film’s a direct-t0-video outing, it’s directed by Prachya Pinkaew, a Thai filmmaker who’s been delivering some knock-outs over there in Ong Bak, The Protector, and Chocolate. Piqued your interested huh, it did mine.
Pinkaew takes a break from all of those Muay Thia fighting films, for a solid little action/drama which find Hounsou as an assassin, who gets caught up with a seedy...

X-Men: First Class Directed by: Matthew Vaughn Written by: Ashley Miller, Zack Stentz, Jane Goldman Matthew Vaughn (screenplay), Sheldon Turner and Bryan Singer (story) Starring: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Lawrence, Rose Byrne, January Jones, Oliver Platt Bryan Singer's first X-Men film may no longer be remembered as one of the best comic book movies ever made, but it certainly opened the floodgates for an entire decade of superhero-themed summer blockbusters. Eleven years later, the X-Men franchise is now in a "rebuilding" phase of sorts. After Singer abandoned the series to take on Superman instead, Brett Ratner came on board to bring a disappointing end to the trilogy. A Wolverine spin-off went even further off the rails, leaving the property in dire need of new creative direction. Fox was faced with two choices: prequel or reboot. Somehow X-Men: First Class manages to fall into both categories. Although...

Elephant White is a new action thriller starring Kevin Bacon and Djimon Hounsou, both are very recognizable actors. The film is directed by Prachva Pinkaew (Ong Bak) who has really delivered an action packed movie based on Thai sex-trafficking stories.
The story follows Hounsou who is our main character, a hired hit man who takes out these underground trafficking gang members one-by-one. Hounsou puts on a near perfect performance with all of the action and deep story that develops as the movie goes on. Hands down, this is Hounsou’s standout performance! The guy needs more strong roles like this!
Kevin Bacon has a really cool supporting role in Elephant White, a role we really have never seen him jump in before, accent and all. Bacon’s character “Jimmy the Brit” is very entertaining in every scene we get wit him, sometimes funny and sometimes we feel for the guy...

Written and Directed by Prachya Pinkaew
Featuring Sahajak Boonthanakit, Djimon Hounsou, Kevin Bacon, Weeraprawat Wongpuapan
Elephant White, the newest film from Prachya Pinkaew (Ong-bak), is a beautifully shot albeit derivative action yarn with none of the panache exhibited in the director’s previous films.
After his daughter is abducted and then murdered by members of a sex-trafficking syndicate in Thailand, Rajahdan (Sahajak Boonthanakit) hires an imposing mercenary named Church (played by Gladiator’s Djimon Hounsou) to take them out. Church visits an arms dealer called Jimmy the Brit (a slumming Kevin Bacon) and stocks up on hardcore weaponry before heading into Bangkok to shoot some bad guys. After blowing up his targets in fiery action-film fashion he befriends Mae (Jirantanin Pitakporntrakul) a young sex worker who might be a spy from one of the opposing slave-trade syndicates. Church uncovers a far more complicated hierarchy responsible for the death of Rajahdan’s daughter,...

Good news everyone! Now that the summer months have arrived, it means that most of the movies hitting DVD and Blu-ray are all the bottom of the barrel flicks that were dumped in theatres back in February. Case in point: this week's biggest releases are The Rite starring Anthony Hopkins, The Roommate, and The Mechanic starring Jason Statham and Ben Foster. Other potentially more noteworthy titles include The Other Woman starring Natalie Portman, Prachya Pinkaew's Elephant White, festival hit Daydream Nation, and Brad Anderson's Vanishing on 7th Street. We've also got Tim and Eric: Awesome Show, Great Job! Season 5 and the complete Espn 30 for 30 documentary series, plus The Hustler: 50th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray. What will you be buying or renting this week? Check out the full list of releases after the jump. Amazon.com Widgets

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:

Pirates of the Caribbean: on Stranger Tides

I will admit my bias, as I absolutely adored the first three Pirates films, but that aside, this film’s first trailer knocked my socks off. Though it be a mere trailer, it had it all: Jack Sparrow (the...

Ton of fun releases this week so wake up!
Elephant White - Don't know much about this one except that it comes from action grindhouse Millennium Films (Expendables) and stars Kevin Bacon as a ruthless weapons dealer. Expect car chases, one liners and running away from explosions. This is a must watch for me.
The Mechanic - Another Millennium joint, this is the remake of the old Bronson film that sort of went unnoticed at the box office (at least by me). However, good source material and Ben Foster as an assassin's apprentice make me want to check it out.
Vanishing on 7th Street - After getting ravaged by two of our reviewers here on Quiet Earth (here and here) this one's a "enter at own risk" kind of thing. Reasons to include it here are that it's apocalyptic and was directed by Brad Anderson who did The Machinist and Transsiberian.

Prachya Pinkaew is largely responsible for some of the best martial arts movies in recent memory. Films like “Ong Bak”, “Tom Yum Goong” (aka “The Protector”), and “Chocolate” are full to overflowing with flying knees, spinning elbows, and basically crazy Muay Thai freaks doing insane stunts, and that’s what makes them great. His latest movie, “Elephant White”, is his first English-language feature, and has just been released direct to video. While there are some admirable qualities (any movie that begins with an exploding motorcycle gang can’t be all bad), “Elephant White” is an underwhelming experience. Pinkaew sticks to his standard criminal underworld fare, but this film makes abundantly clear that it was his collaboration with actors like Tony Jaa, who is essentially a gnarly little stunt dude, that really made his movies stand out. This time around Pinkaew works with more veteran actors, who happen to be much less accomplished fighters,...

Diabolique (Criterion Collection) I can't even begin to tell you how much I recommend this film, it as absolute stunner and I am frustrated I didn't get a chance to watch this new Blu-ray edition before leaving for Cannes as I'm sure it's just sitting back home in my mailbox waiting for me to devour. If you haven't seen it I wholeheartedly suggest you give it a try and if you are a regular Criterion customer I can't see how this wouldn't be an acceptable blind buy.
Also, while you're at it, you should also consider another great Henri-Georges Clouzot Blu-ray, Wages of Fear, which Criterion released last April. You can read my review of that right here and you can believe when I get home from Cannes I will be diving into Diabolique as well.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? The Legend Of The Mighty Soap Trailer When I was a kid I watched HBO relentlessly. Whenever there wasn't reairings of Fraggle Rock, Braingames, Heartbeeps,...

Djimon Hounsou does what he does best in this extended, two-minute plus clip from Thai director Prachya Pinkaew’s English-languaged debut, the action thriller “Elephant White”. Good news for fans of Muay Thai action flicks: the formerly retired Tony Jaa has emerged from his self-imposed spiritual retreat, ready to kick ass on screen once again. Not only that, but he is re-uniting with the director that helped catapult him to fame with the martial arts movie Ong-Bak. That's right, Prachya Pinkaew and Tony Jaa have put aside their differences to start work on Tom Yum Goong 2, the sequel to the film that was released in North America as The Protector. Fight choreographer Panna Rittikrai is also on board and if that wasn't enough, Chocolate star Jija Yanin will supposedly have a significant role as well. Plus it will be shot in 3D. What more could you ask for? The announcement seems like it is coming not a moment too soon for Prachya Pinkaew, whose U.S. debut Elephant White is going direct-to-dvd next month and looks pretty questionable [1]. Of course,...

Elephant White is a co-production between Millenium Films and Swingin' Productions and in the trailer below, an African mercenary (Djimon Hounsou) is hired to seek vengeance on a gang, profiting from the Thai sex trade, after they murder his daughter. This endeavour requires big guns and English accents, from a ruthless arms dealer (Kevin Bacon). Have a look at the explosive trailer below, with this film moving straight-to-dvd/Blu-ray May 17th.

After the success of Ong Bak and Tom Yum Goong on the international scene it was only a matter of time when the Us studios would come knocking on director Prachya Pinkaew's door asking him to recreate the success on their terms. Prachya teamed up with Millennium Films, connoisseurs of B-grade action schlock and the result is the straight to video flick Elephant White, a rousing tale of assassins, ass kicking, bullets to the face and Kevin Bacon putting on an English accent for some reason. We have the first trailer for the film which will be released on May 17th and while some of it looks good I can't get over the accent of mister Bacon and wonder what the idea was behind that choice.Take a look...

When you see a trailer with the tagline "From the Director of Ong-Bak," you almost expect to suddenly see Tony Jaa flying across the screen (granted, last I heard he's in a temple, but still). Instead, we get Kevin Bacon and Djimon Hounsou. And what's sad is that there are a few scenes that look like they have potential, but the overall story, production, and feel of the trailer weigh it all down.
Elephant White is due out on DVD on May 17th and is directed by Prachya Pinkaew. I certainly don't have high hopes for it, but it still looks like it may be a fun film when nothing else is on.

With Water for Elephants hitting theatres this weekend, it seems like an ideal time to debut a trailer for another elephant-related movie. At least you'll be sure to capture the attention of all the many elephant enthusiasts out there, right? To be honest, I'm not sure if Elephant White actually has anything to do with elephants, but somehow I am not surprised that this one is directed by the same guy who brought us Ong-Bak and The Protector. They sure do love their elephants over there in Thailand. Elephant White is the English language debut of Prachya Pinkaew, but if you were hoping for another ass-kicking martial arts film starring Tony Jaa or JeeJa Yanin, you might want to lower your expectations. Instead you get Djimon Hounsou playing a hitman with a conscience named Curtie Church, and Kevin Bacon putting on a hilarious accent as arms dealer Jimmy the Brit.

Prachya Pinkaew, the Thai filmmaker behind a slew of martial arts extravaganzas like “Ong Bak” and “Chocolate”, is about to release his English-language debut, “Elephant White”, starring Kevin Bacon and Djimon Hounsou. A new trailer has hit the metaphorical airwaves, and while it promises ample action, it will be interesting to see how Pinkaew handles the action with actors like these who, while fine thespians, aren’t freaky Muay Thai prodigies, or gnarly stuntmen willing to completely wreck themselves to get a shot. In the R-rated film, mercenary Curtie Church (Hounsou) is hired to take out a notorious Thai sex-trafficking gang by a father whose daughter was kidnapped and murdered by the gang. With the help of a ruthless weapons dealer (Bacon), Church finds the men he is hired to kill. But what starts as a paying job turns into an outright war between two rival gangs, and Church finds...
