Mubi is partnering with the New York Film Festival to present highlights from Projections, a festival program of film and video work that expands upon our notions of what the moving image can do and be. James N. Kienitz Wilkin's Indefinite Pitch (2016), recipient of the festival's Kazuko Trust Award, is showing on Mubi in many countries around the world from October 18 - November 16, 2016.I’ve come to the conclusion that movies always communicate the circumstances in which they were made, and most of the time, these circumstances are unconscious influences. If one identifies with movies, or has dedicated one’s life to, or expects to make a living from, movies, then circumstantially, one's personal ambitions, dreams and memories get riskily exposed. Indefinite Pitch tries to pinpoint this. But not everything can be pinned down. In music, not all instruments make notes with a clear pitch. The rising and falling background...

For those many aspiring artists who make the pilgrimage to Los Angeles in hopes of finding their silver screen dreams, the city can take on a magical and enticing air. More often than not, small town beauty queens and football stars hoping for fame shoot for the stars and land among the trash. As beautiful a city as it is, Hollywood is also a place where the strong eagerly use and discard the weak with a frightening frequency. Can’t take the pressure? Don’t fret. There is certainly no shortage of wide-eyed kids waiting to take your place.
In Knight of Cups, the latest film by Terrence Malick, Christian Bale stars as a Hollywood screenwriter drifting through the sights and sounds of contemporary Los Angeles. To mark the occasion, we’ve taken a look back at the finest films portraying the dark side of Hollywood — the broken hearts and crushed dreams.

Rocksteady’s post-launch support for Batman: Arkham Knight marches on today, with the threequel’s December content pack arriving bang on schedule.
While last month’s update focused on elements featured in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice film – namely the stylized Batmobile and Ben Affleck’s monotone Batsuit – December circles back to the Caped Crusader’s prestigious archives to cherry-pick characters such as The Mad Hatter, Killer Croc, Ra’s Al Ghul and Mr. Freeze.
Entitled Season of Infamy: Most Wanted, those new faces in question will be scattered across a pack of new missions for Arkham Knight, and Warner Bros. listed brief summaries of each to stoke excitement.
Wonderland: The Mad Hatter makes things personal as the supervillain lures Batman into a demented, hallucinatory battle of wits across Gotham City and within the pages of a twisted story book.

“Blackfish” star and former SeaWorld killer whale trainer John Hargrove is experiencing a week of ultimate highs and lows. It was only a matter of time,” Hargrove told TheWrap. “But I watched it.

Those conditions led to brutal and even fatal attacks by killer whales on their trainers, which the company swept under the rug. In the build-up to release, Bungie continuously trumpeted its extensive plans to support Destiny in the months and even years after its debut. But now, almost a full month since launch, we aren’t exactly sure what that content will be; though many assume additional strike missions and new, explorable planets will be the headlining features.
Well, as it happens, the Internet has uncovered a breadcrumb trial of clues that lead to several unreleased areas within the shared-world shooter. Starting with Terminus — an unfinished slice of gameplay due to release in 2015 — one ardent player has stumbled upon an area on The Red Planet itself, Mars.
YouTube user se7ensins has published a video that directs budding Guardians toward the unreleased area, which should then grant access to a strike mission known as “The Hypogeum.” Alas, whereas the Terminus contained a host of Dead Ghost collectibles, this environment in particular is largely empty.

Every normal person loves a good movie, but if there’s one thing movie critics aren’t, it’s normal people. Sure, you can write a perfectly decent review extolling the virtues of the latest hit film, but that gets old after a while. Good is boring. It’s much more fun writing about bad movies. Beneath the surface of every respectable journalist who writes movie reviews lies a sadistic monster, gleefully waiting for a horrible film to come out so that they can use the power of their words against it. These are the people who root for Anton Ego, the caustic food critic, when watching Ratatouille.
While this sort of cut throat film criticism is entertaining, it starts to feel a little cruel, in a making-fun-of-the-kid-with-crutches way, when the movie they’re deriding is legitimately awful. Or at least it would, if it wasn’t absolutely hilarious.

One of the tendencies that festival-goers develop over time is finding connecting threads between films that might otherwise be completely unrelated. This unconscious search for umbrella themes, even if unintended by festival programmers, intensifies when you sit down to write about the films. At first glance, there is little connecting three films about aging Belgian transsexuals, Argentinian civilians on camera, and Turkish-American political pundits. Beneath the surface, though, all deal in some way with a desire for self-expression in the spotlight.
Before the Last Curtain Falls follows a group of gay and transsexual performers who get together in the later years of their lives to put on an avant-garde show called Gardenia. When the film begins in the hauntingly beautiful city of Ghent in Belgium, where the performers hail from, the show has already become a massive international success and it is returning home for one final performance after more than 200 outings.

Actor Tim Blake Nelson made his comic book movie debut in 2008 when he starred as a nerdy, awkward scientist in The Incredible Hulk, and now he's reportedly getting ready to head back to the genre... to play a nerdy, awkward scientist in Josh Trank's upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. The news of the casting comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which says that Nelson is currently in negotiations but has not yet officially signed on. Should he put his name by the proverbial X, however, he will play Harvel Elder, a scientist who is shunned from society due to his physical appearance and is forced underground, eventually taking on the name Mole Man. Beneath the surface he controls an army of monsters known as Moloids. The trade's sources say that Nelson will not actually become Mole Man in the movie, but that he is set up to become a villain in...

The man McQueen has so often, and so memorably, chosen to depict these fractured representations is no other than Michael Fassbender. The superb third film in Richard Linklater's series captures the melancholy of long-term romance
For those of us of a certain age, the screen love story that has slowly played out between Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke over the course of two decades – and now three movies – is part of the fabric of our cinematic lives.
In Before Sunrise, the actors (whose improvisations and revisions added much to an original script by Richard Linklater and Kim Krizan) played two sparky young travellers whose lives cross during a talk-filled night in Vienna. Nine years later, Delpy and Hawke were sharing screenwriting credits (and an Oscar nomination) for Before Sunset, wherein the couple meet for only the second time, their respective lives having moved on, but the brief encounter spark between them still clearly very much alive. That film ended on an ambiguous note – a teasing spine-tingler that left the audience...

I love me a good ol fashioned post-apocalyptic, people living in snowy underground outpost while feral creatures try to break in and eat them movies. There’s a lot of that in Jeff Renfroe’s “The Colony”, it seems like, and the film’s trailer (which you can see below) certainly doesn’t disappoint. It stars Laurence Fishburne and Bill Paxton (“Game over, man, game over!”) and looks like a good ol fashion creature feature. But set in the post-apocalypse and with lots of snow. Good times, good times. Check out a new poster, a handful of new images and a new trailer for the film below. Years ago, winter came and never went away. Director's take on Spain's economic jeopardy, I'm So Excited should remind the Rajoy government that the end is still in doubt
A plane circles in the sky with a damaged undercarriage. The passengers get up to high jinks as they wait for the inevitable crash landing. A cast of call girls, gay cabin crew and a crooked banker on the run says this is your traditional 1970s-style Hollywood airline disaster comedy. In fact, it is how Spain's most renowned film director, Pedro Almodóvar sees the current state of his country.
Needless to say, that is not the view of Mariano Rajoy's government in Madrid. While not disputing that Spain has its problems, the administration say the wipeout that was looming last summer has been avoided.
Proof is that financial market conditions have eased since Mario Draghi said that the European Central Bank would do whatever it took to safeguard the future of the euro.

John Doe’s apartment? As in the home of creepy, pervy Kevin Spacey from Se7en? Go ahead. Issue a worldwide “weirdo alert.” Sound the alarms, but I can’t help myself. David Fincher’s 1995 thriller still does a number on me to this day — just in a “feel good” kind of way. Good thing that doesn’t sound even creepier.
Among Se7en’s numerous successes is its ability to reprimand the viewer’s obsession with an overwhelming backlash of the morbid. Writer Andrew Kevin Walker achieves this in grim fashion and in less subtler ways throughout, but Se7en also pulls in the viewer with its killer’s cloudy cult of personality in “John Doe.” When detectives David Mills (Brad Pitt) and William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) find Doe’s residence through a paper trail of library loans — works from the Marquis de Sade and Dante, naturally — it’s a drab apartment...

The Other Place is a tight, witty, and powerful piece of theater. There has been an upwelling of solid straight plays on Broadway and Off-Broadway stages as of late, and The Other Place is only going to make it all the more difficult for Tony voters to pick their winners. However, Laurie Metcalf should make it considerably easier for those voters to select a winner for Leading Actress in a Play.
Metcalf [left] is stunning. Playing the role of Juliana, she commits wholeheartedly to a whirlwind of a transformation, falling from a collected, confident, and sexy career woman to a lost and weeping shadow of her former self. Bringing the audience with her on this journey of disintegration, Metcalf’s presence is commanding, breathing with a natural flow as she unravels before our eyes in a flurry of loss and regret.

Les Misérables | Gangster Squad | American Mary | What Richard Did | Midnight Son | Jiro Dreams Of Sushi | The Lookout | May I Kill U? | Underground
Les Misérables (12A)
(Tom Hooper, 2012, UK) Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne. 158 mins
The King's Speech director plus the globally adored musical: it's a match made in commercial heaven, a third-hand version of a 19th-century French saga, and the most epic celebrity karaoke session ever filmed. The fact that it's entirely sung, "live" on set, supposedly communicates more "emotion", but this is already oversaturated with so much melodramatic incident, the effect is numbing.
Gangster Squad (15)
(Ruben Fleischer, 2013, Us) Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin. 113 mins
Brolin's under-the-radar police squad guns for Penn's La mobsters in this exuberantly violent, but disappointingly straightforward 1940s thriller, derived more from modern videogames than vintage film noirs. Action definitely speaks louder than words here.
American Mary (18)

A sweet junket into the land of the new agers, and youth that refuses to grow old. .Goats. is mostly about goats and the subtle wisdom and peace they can bring to those members of humankind wise enough to learn from them. Ok, that is a little bit of Bs. Actually, .Goats. is about adults and kids who grow up, and what happens when they do not grow up. Beneath the surface is the subtle lesson that we all have the choice to accept adulthood, or not. The richer we are, the tougher the choice. That is what you get, you Trustafarians! After a long day of Suits, Gabriel Macht is ready to slip into something a little more comfortable. "I'm a T-shirt-and-jeans-with-combat-boots guy," says the Bronx-born actor, kicking back in his Toronto home after wrapping an episode of USA's whip-smart legal hit. "And if I don't have to shave, I don't."
While Macht, 40, may prefer the laid-back look, his hyper-polished character, Harvey Specter, opts to wage his courtroom battles armed in sleek Tom Ford suits. Beneath the surface, though, a case can be made that the two share a drive to succeed and a charm that's almost criminal. We deposed TV's smoothest legal eagle on crashing with his bromantic costar, ignoring the Swingers guide to dating and what it's like to have caviar with Sir Anthony Hopkins....

The second London festival of photography begins on Friday 1 June, with shows on everything from British identity to the Gaddafi regime, plus screenings, talks and masterclasses
The 2012 London Festival of Photography begins on Friday (1 June) at several venues across King's Cross, Bloomsbury, Euston and Fitzrovia. This year's theme is Inside Out: Reflections on the Private and the Public, which covers current debates on the nature of street photography, censorship, surveillance, the social media revolution and the attendant democratisation of visual journalism. (A day-by-day festival diary of all exhibitions and events is viewable here.) Here are my personal highlights:
The Gaddafi Archives: Libya Before the Arab Spring, 21–29 June
Photographs, official documents, films and artefacts from the huge archive found by Human Rights Watch in state intelligence buildings and Gaddafi's many residences after the downfall of his regime. A glimpse of a recent secret history and photography's role in recording it.

Chicago – Being a child of the ’80s, I can vividly remember when David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet” took the world by storm. I was too young to see it in theaters but I would be an early teen when the decade ended and the film made a stunning number of lists of the best films of the previous ten years. I could finally see what the fuss was all about on VHS. I would never be the same. There are a few movies I can point to and say, “That shaped the way I look at film.” “Blue Velvet,” recently released on Blu-ray to celebrate its 25th anniversary and complete with 50 minutes of never-before-seen deleted scenes, is one of those movies.
Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
What more is there to say about “Blue Velvet”? Some have theorized that the majority of the action of the film is actually meant to be interpreted as a dream,...

David Lynch's suburban surrealist film noir masterpiece Blue Velvet makes its way to Blu-ray this week in an edition jam-packed with goodness. The film looks better than it ever has on home video, and the disc is brimming with content, both old and new. Looks like MGM realized that this is a film that fans will eat up, and the new content along with the upgrade in image quality is well worth the asking price! Beneath the surface of small-town serenity lies a dark domain where innocence dare not tread and unpredictability is the norm. It is the haunting realm of Blue Velvet. In this "shocking, deeply disturbing, startling mixture of the heartfelt and the horrific" (Newsweek), clean-cut Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan, "Twin Peaks") realizes...

If you've seen the "Fright Night" trailers or are familiar with the '85 cult classic, you know this is not your run-of-the-mill vampire movie — at least by today's "Twilight" standards, anyway. There are no swoony undead to be found in this horror-comedy — just a lot of blood and plenty of laughs.
Here at MTV News, we've been amped about the film from the get-go, and even featured it as part of our exclusive Sneak Peek Week leading up to the Movie Awards. The film stars Colin Farrell as a bloodthirsty vampire who heads to suburbia and terrorizes his next-door neighbor Charley, played by "Star Trek" veteran Anton Yelchin.
