November can be a slow month for streaming services. Amazon, however, is entering into 2020’s penultimate month with some steam.
Amazon is really beefing up its TV library in November 2020. Both Community (which arrives on Nov. 8) and Scrubs (Nov. 14) will be added to Amazon Prime this month and in the process complete the streaming trifecta: Netflix, Amazon, Hulu. That’s pretty impressive stuff for both shows. And then on the film side of things, November 1 sees the arrival of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Twilight, and the Underworld franchise. Somebody didn’t tell Amazon Spooky Season was over and bless them for it.
As for the originals, Alex Rider is the most intriguing TV series here. That is based on the British spy novel series and premieres on Nov. 13 on IMDb TV (which is available to all Prime subscribers). That will be followed by Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series on Nov.

All streaming services go through a down period after the excitement of Spooky Season, it’s only natural. Thankfully with its list of new releases for November 2020, Hulu is making the best out of a barren pop culture landscape.
For starters, Hulu is premiering one of its major 2020 reboots this month as Animaniacs arrives on Nov. 20. Yakko, Wakko, Dot, and the rest of the Warner gang are set to return for this long-awaited revival of the animated classic. That’s about it as far as original series go but Hulu is also premiering original movies Greta, about climate activist Greta Thunberg on Nov. 13; and Run, a horror film starring Sarah Paulson, on Nov. 20.
Still, despite all the Animaniacs, Gretas, and Sarah Paulsons, the biggest hits this month might just be on the library content side of things. November 1 sees the arrival of some major TV properties. For starters, racy British...

Hold me. Thrill me. Kiss me. Kill me. The films of David Mackenzie envision life as a never-ending whirlwind of experience, a cyclone of emotion constantly spinning out of control. These feelings are heightened and externalized through melodrama, yet they can also simmer under the surface like hidden secrets waiting to explode. While his exhausted characters never fit into one social class – pop stars, artisan chefs and thuggish bruisers all take center stage – each sees the world in a similarly warped way. They are confused by inadequacy, defined by repression, purposefully solitary, and bordering on self-destruction. But most importantly they are also eager to transcend this unhappiness, especially after finding inspiration in another equally tormented individual. One must simply desire the opportunity to grow, to live, to survive.

"You need to experience the dynamite... to know that the dynamite can go off." Just last week we featured Starred Up as our latest Monthly Must See, an intense, brutal but incredible prison movie from English director David Mackenzie starring Jack O'Connell and Ben Mendelsohn. You may not recognize the name at first, but you should certainly recognize his films - David Mackenzie's filmography includes Young Adam, Asylum, Hallam Foe (or Mister Foe in the Us), Spread with Ashton Kutcher, the sci-fi Perfect Sense and the music film Tonight You're Mine, all before he went on to make Starred Up. Last week I sat down for a chat with David on the realism of the film and finding actor Jack O'Connell, who plays inmate Eric Love. As a big fan of Starred Up, I was anxious to get a chance to sit down with Mackenzie and drill him on...

Fireworks is a charming indie comedy about a teenage girl, Kat, who runs away from home to find her uncle Gillies, who she has secretly discovered is her real dad. But Gillies, played by the fantastic Ewen Bremner, turns out to have bipolar disorder. Without fully understanding this, Kat hatches a plan for them to make a homemade firework, with Gillies' medication as the essential ingredient.
The Fireworks production team are now looking for a talented, bold, headstrong young woman to play the lead role of Kat.
Our bright new star doesn’t need any acting experience, but she does need to be bold, funny and brave. If that sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.
The ideal candidate will be a young-looking sixteen year old with a London accent, but we are prepared to be blown away by any fresh new star who can play a 13-14 year old London girl.

Recently added to Netflix Instant, Tonight You’re Mine is director David Mackenzie’s other film from 2011 that’s not the one that involves Ewan McGregor and Eva Green getting down while the world’s population steadily begins to lose each of their five senses. Originally released under the title You Instead, the decidedly lo-fi Tonight You’re Mine was filmed on location over five days at Scotland’s massive T in the Park Festival, sort of a UK version of Coachella (but one that comes off as decidedly more clean and decent). An eighty-minute-long charmer, the film was barely seen when it finally got released in the United States and it made less than six thousand dollars during its very brief and very limited release in May of 2012. Basically, if you didn’t happen to catch it back then, you’re far from the only one. Short on narrative and long on charm, the...

Paul has some weird pronunciation things, swallowing some of his words. That's irksome, but just a weird quirk. Overall, not bad. He could lay off the runs a little. He's not...

Kanye West turns 35 years old today, and in celebration of the self-declared king of rap…we’ve compiled a list of some of his most outrageous moments! Who can forget when he charged the stage at the 2009 MTV Music Awards during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Music Video. Not only did Kanye face huge criticism from Beyonce and the public, but his actions turned Swift into America's sweetheart. That wasn’t the first time West pulled a stunt like that; after Gretchen Wilson won for Best New Artist at the 2004 American Music Awards, Kanye told reporters that he felt like her was “robbed” because he believed that he should have won Best New Artist of the year. It took an episode of "South Park" in 2009 which made crude references to Kanye’s overly outspoken character to finally soften the rappers demeanor. Taking to his blog the artist confessed...

Handcuffing two people in real life would probably be the quickest way to get yourself arrested and make those people hate each other, but in the movies, it always seems to work. Going back to Alfred Hitchcock's classic caper The 39 Steps, the ol' "handcuff together the two people who don't like ach other" trick has led to all kinds of unlikely romances-- and it's at it again this weekend in Tonight You're Mine, the new indie opening in theaters today. Luke Treadaway and Natalia Tena play two musicians from different bands who find themselves handcuffed to each other in the middle of an enormous Scottish music festival-- and as they say in the business, the show must go on anyway. In this exclusive clip from Tonight You're Mine that we're premiering below, we see exactly how their characters Adam and Morello get chained together, in the kind of odd...

Watch clips, see the trailer and images from Tonight You're Mine, starring Luke Treadaway and Natalia Tena The David Mackenzie (Young Adam) film from Roadside Attractions which was shot entirely on location at Scotland’s famous T in the Park music festival, opens in New York and Los Angeles on May 11th. Set against the picturesque yet raucous backdrop of a rock n’ roll music festival, the film follows strutting indie music star Adam (Treadaway) and feisty punk-rock girl band leader Morello (Tena), as they are handcuffed together as part of a backstage altercation. Not many films are set at music festivals. D.A. Pennebaker’s documentary, “Monterey Pop” is vital, we’ll grant you, and other rock docs that expose something fundamental about the artists they’re profiling (“Don’t Look Back,” “Gimme Shelter”) remain compelling portraits of some of the most important artists of the twentieth-century. But, much like stand-up comedy or running for high office, fictional recreations of what compels a human being to get up onstage in front of thousands of people and expose themselves to the public at large, are far and few between.
With this in mind we turn to “You Instead,” which is director David Mackenzie’s seventh feature film, not that you’d known it from anything on display here. It has all the manufactured, forcible ‘fun’ of a T-Mobile flash-mob advert although it attempts to weave a spontaneous star-cross’d romance out of a happenstance meeting...

Day 2 of my Dallas International Film Festival experience started on an interesting note. I'm used to waking up really early to begin my day, and when I realized that I didn't have to set an alarm because the first movie didn't start until 4 pm, I woke up sans alarm clock and it was glorious.
I woke up with enough time to get some work done and even partook in my first ever In-n-Out Burger. I sought advice from everyone who's ever been there before and was advised to get a neapolitan milkshake and my fries "animal style." My friends are all smart people and they did not steer me wrong. I'm not a foodie who normally takes pictures of his food, mainly because I don't eat all that healthy, but that's what my meal looked like in the photo at the top.

English writer-director David Mackenzie has forged a distinct path of romance with dramas like Young Adam and Mister Foe. But for his latest effort, Tonight You're Mine, he's trying his hand at romantic comedy set in the midst of Scotland's raucous music festival T in the Park. Luke Treadaway (Attack the Block) and Natalia Tena (Tonks of the Harry Potter films) step out of the supporting player realm to lead this feature.formerly titled You Instead--playing a pair of rockers who unexpectedly connect after being handcuffed together by a curious stranger. He's a full-on famous frontman of an electropop band, with the requisite supermodel girlfriend, who harbors major jealousy issues. She's the lead singer of a post-punk band that's struggling to get noticed, with a bland banker boyfriend in tow. Of course they hate each other on sight, but as they're forced to make their way through this incredible...

After his Perfect Sense finally landed in theaters this year, David Mackenzie’s next is already prepped for a release soon stateside. Switching titles from You Instead to Tonight You’re Mine, we posted a UK trailer for this last summer, but now an official domestic one has arrived.
You’ll likely recognize Attack the Block star Luke Treadaway as our lead here, in a basic plot we’ve seen many times; a girl and a guy who don’t know each other are forced to be together (this time via handcuffs) for an adventure (see: concert festival) and they are reluctant at first, but then slowly fall in love. Thankfully, someone as talented as Mackenzie is behind the camera, which should provide for a more personal take than we usually get. Check out the promising trailer and new poster below via Apple.

Roadside Attractions and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions’ Stage 6 Films will release David Mackenzie's "Tonight You're Mine" in theaters May 11. Spwa originally acquired the film under the title "You Instead" after its world premiere at the 2011 Glasgow Film Festival, followed by a Us premiere at SXSW Film Festival. Spwa will distribute all other Us media. The cast includes Luke Treadaway, Natalia Tena, Alastair MacKenzie, Gavin Mitchell and Sophie Wu. Thomas Leveritt wrote the script, and the film was produced by Gillian Berrie. Shot over four days at Scotland’s T in the Park music festival, the film follows an indie music star and a punk-rock girl band leader who get into a backstage fight and find themselves handcuffed together and unable to be separated, even to perform their gigs. The Stone Roses have signed two record deals for new material, it has been announced. The band, who reformed in October, finalised the UK and Us contracts earlier this week. Columbia have secured the Us rights for The Stone Roses' new tracks, while Universal Records are behind their UK and global deal, which could earn them millions, The Sun reports. The band will already earn over £10m from their sold out homecoming gigs at Manchester's Heaton Park, an income which will only increase further with slots at Denmark's NorthSide festival, V Festival and T In The Park. It has been a fantastic year for British independent film with Steven McQueen’s Shame, Ben Wheatley’s Kill List and the directorial debut of Paddy Considine, Tyrannosaur, heading up a fine list of nominees.
There was a particularly strong set of nominees competing for the Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director with Richard Ayoade’s wonderful coming of age love story Submarine and Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block being firm favourites here. Lynne Ramsay’s We Need to Talk About Kevin made for a fine return for director Lynne Ramsay and there’s a lot of love for Andrew Haigh’s Weekend, which was represented tonight in two categories.
It’s great to see Paddy Considine’s film do so well, not least the award for Olivia Colman, and the awards represent a very promising time for the British film industry, with some very strong voices emerging in the last year.

Live streaming of the British Independent Film Awards this evening came off much more smoothly than last night's hiccuping and lurching feed from the European Film Awards, which is a damn fine thing, considering that the show was far, far more entertaining. Particularly since host Chris O'Dowd became increasingly inebriated as the evening wore on.
So, the full list of winners and nominees:
Best British Independent Film: Tyrannosaur.
Also nominated: Senna, Shame, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and We Need to Talk About Kevin.
Best Director: Lynne Ramsay for We Need to Talk About Kevin.
Also nominated: Ben Wheatley for Kill List, Steve McQueen for Shame, Tomas Alfredson for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Paddy Considine for Tyrannosaur.
The Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director: Paddy Considine for Tyrannosaur.
Also nominated: Joe Cornish for Attack the Block, Ralph Fiennes for Coriolanus, John Michael McDonagh for The Guard and Richard Ayoade for Submarine.

Following hard on the heels of the dire You Instead, Young Adam director David Mackenzie has served up another bafflingly daft film
David Mackenzie is the smart and interesting director who made Young Adam. His La satire Spread was an underrated film I enjoyed a lot. But he really has been showing us some baffling stuff recently and this movie, about two people finding love as the world comes to an end, is sublimely and uncompromisingly daft. Ewan McGregor is on complacent form playing a sexy chef called Michael, and Eva Green is Susan, a preposterous medical scientist. They fall for each other, just as everyone in the world succumbs to a global virus that, among other bizarre symptoms, causes them to lose their sensory perceptions. One of the symptoms is frantic hunger. Another is ferocious rage. The results look worryingly like the food-poisoning scenes in the Zucker/Abrahams classic Airplane!

30 Minutes Or Less (15)
(Ruben Fleischer, 2011, Us) Jesse Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride. 83 mins
After the heights of The Social Network, Eisenberg is demoted to a lowly pizza delivery boy for this casual caper movie. He's driven to rob banks at the behest of McBride's criminal non-mastermind, with buddy Ansari roped in for comic effect. In fact, comic effect seems to be all this is after. Like a dodgy pizza, it's enjoyable at the time but nutritionally dubious, a bit thin, and just about gone cold by the time it's finished.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (15)
(Thomas Alfredson, 2011, UK/Fra/Ger) Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch. 127 mins
A very British spy thriller that dispenses with all that hasty pacing and coarse action in favour of well-tailored men talking in rooms. A complex, classy cold war mole-hunt that demands attention, but rewards it richly.

You Instead has a nice premise behind it, but fails to deliver in a way that makes it anything more than a fair film. The plot follows two feuding rock artists handcuffed together mere hours before they’re (separately) due to perform with their bands.
The film is set and was filmed at T in the Park in 5 days, this is an incredible feat – organised chaos is probably one of the hardest things to organise and not being able to go back for reshoots meant that they were under strict scheduling and everything needed to be completed over the weekend. While this is interesting and gives the film an edge, it stops the film becoming as good as it should be.
Luke Treadaway plays Adam, one half of a successful electric pop band who arrived in their tour bus ready to perform for all their fans. Natalia Tena plays Morello,...

Director David Mackenzie (Young Adam, Spread) has two very different love story films coming out in the next month, the festival-set You Instead and the pandemic-apocalyptic Perfect Sense.

This smug, self-indulgent pop festival-set drama is about as deep as a music video, writes Peter Bradshaw
You have to hope that David Mackenzie and his cast had a nice time making You Instead. For the audience, there is only the prospect of sitting through a jaw-droppingly self-indulgent, shallow, smug if mercifully brief feature with a plot that looks like the outline for a pop video. It has been entirely shot on location at the T in the Park festival; the crowds and bands are real, but Luke Treadaway and Natalia Tena play two fictional feuding pop stars who get handcuffed together by some mysterious bloke for some mysterious reason and of course get very sparky together as they squelch around in the mud. With the festival location, Mackenzie perhaps hoped to siphon off all the genuine atmosphere into his movie. But it is just lazy and pointless and when...

On Film Weekly this week, Jason Solomons meets a rising star of French cinema, director Céline Sciamma. Céline won critical acclaim for her 2007 film Water Lilies, a coming of age drama that managed to merge sex and synchronised swimming. Now she returns to the UK with Tomboy, another film that plays on gender expectations. The film follows Laure, an eleven-year-old girl who decides to re-invent herself as a boy called Michael when she moves to a new home.

Everything about You Instead feels genuine apart from the characters and the plot. It is a romantic comedy filmed at 2010’s T in the Park Festival in Scotland, with real bands and real festival-goers buzzing around the periphery of the plot. This is a rather good idea for a movie, as it gives a rich and fascinating backdrop to the story. It’s made on what is obviously a very small budget; presumably it had to be shot fast and around the time schedule of the festival, meaning that they’d have to take, for a start, whatever weather they were hit with.
Unfortunately, the story writer Thomas Leveritt (a young, award-winning novelist) and director David Mackenzie (Young Adam, Hallam Foe) have saddled this ‘realist’ backdrop with about as dull and conventional a romantic-comedy plot as it’s possible to conceive. Given that the main artistic...

The end of the world is getting more complicated on the big screen. In the old days it usually involved a big old asteroid, some rogue aliens with wanderlust and a bunch of rayguns, or perhaps a defense system becoming self-aware and unleashing a bajillion nukes. If you were Roland Emmerich's laptop, it was probably all three. Nowadays we've got entire planets heading our way (Melancholia), global pandemics breaking out (Contagion) or the kind of mystery virus Ewan McGregor and Eva Green are faced with in this new trailer for Perfect Sense. We're assuming that the 'perfect sense' part relates to the blossoming, tender bond that develops between the pair - her, a research scientist; him a chef - because the events unfolding around them look firmly fileable in the 'abnormal' basket. Seriously, who hits a wall with a bike wheel? It's one step away from shoe throwing.Director David Mackenzie,...

David Mackenzie’s rom-com, You Instead, was shot in just five days. Here’s Carley’s review of a film that doesn’t quite overcome its low-budget status…
We’ve just come to the end of another great British summer, filled with barbecues, long walks on the beach, and sun-drenched music festivals. No, scratch that – it was filled with rain, disappointment and muddy music festivals. But in spite of the horrible weather, the music festival has become a British obsession, with hundreds sprouting up over the summer. These range from big ones, such as Reading and V, to smaller ones, like the Ben & Jerry’s Sundae Festival (free ice cream – yum).
It was probably only a matter of time, then, before one of these became the setting for a romantic comedy, which is exactly what you get with director David Mackenzie’s You Instead, filmed on location at 2010’s T in the Park in Scotland.
