S4.E1 - Nice Episode to Start the Season [9/10]

Warning: Spoilers
(S4. E1) My Live Reaction / Review for True Blood Season 4 Episode 1 ''She's Not There''. Season 3 was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. So there is this fairy world but I don't like it, it looks dumb. Sookie was gone for a year? Damn this fairy realm is no joke. And Jason is finally a police officer? Arlene's baby is so cute. Tara is a fighter now? Didnt see that coming. Tara now has a girlfriend? I didn't see that coming too. Tommy has become a christian? I definitely didn't see that coming. Eric bought Sookie's house? His obsession with Sookie is out of control. My rating is 9/10.

Jumping the shark
loridonaldsonrocks11 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode didn't just jump the shark, it grew wings and flew over it. I think Sookie being part fairy is a cool and interesting concept but they made it too weird with the fairy realm stuff. I guess the writers didn't want to show us what happened in a year so they skipped right to it through a very weird intro. So Sookie is in the fairy realm and meets her grandaddy there, who thinks he's only been gone a few hours but it's actually been 20 years, which sets the stage for Sookie's one year time jump since she was gone for like 15 minutes. She doesn't eat the magic light fruit so she sees goblin things that are trying to destroy the portal connecting the human and fairy worlds and has to jump into the portal but her grandaddy ate the light fruit so he can't stay in the human world and he dies? Idk it was just a lot. And then since time worked differently in the fairy world Sookie comes back and has to deal with all the changes that happened in a year. Which there were a lot of changes but none of them were really that interesting to me unfortunately. Bill is some public figure head vampire thing. Lafayette is joining a witch group that revived a dead parrot with his boyfriend Jesus. Sam shot Tommy in the leg and now Tommy is a good boy living with Hoyt's mom (omg lol). Sam has a group of shifter friends and they run around together as horses. Jessica and Hoyt moved in together but there's some tension between them over vampire/human behaviors. Tara left town and is a boxer going by the name Toni and dating a girl. Arlene had her baby and it rips the heads off of baby dolls when nobody is in the room. Andy Bellefleur is hooked on V. Jason is a cop and taking care of Crystal's family until they lock him in a freezer. Eric bought Sookie's house so now he can come in whenever he likes. And I'm sure I'm missing something else but dang they really threw a lot together. I would've preferred Sookie didn't time travel and we just got to see these developments happen but now we'll probably get flashbacks and deal with Sookie having to adjust to the new changes. Not a great start to the new season but it was still entertaining enough.

Exciting, intriguing and well produced Sookie driven story ruined by Razzie-award editing and a flood of rotten arcs
igoatabase27 June 2011
One year has passed since the last time I watched True Blood. Bad Blood, the season 3 premiere, didn't convince me to stick around but I thought checking out She's Not There should at least be entertaining. I was right but there're things that will never change and it seems the show keeps carrying the issues that have prevented some of us from becoming fans.

The recap was enlightening and I'll never get tired of the wicked title sequence. However the inexistent editing is annoying and definitely turned me off. One minute it's about humans and vampires, the next you see horses running in the woods. What's the point of covering so many anecdotic arcs ? Of course they'll inevitably collide but compared to shows like Game of Thrones I can't help thinking that the novels adaptation is hasty and mostly focus on the superficial elements instead of serving us some warm substance to satisfy our needs. From the baby, who has nothing in common with Dexter's one, to Lafayette you could axe half the contents and it wouldn't change anything. Yes because all we really care about are charismatic characters like Eric and Jessica. Last season she nearly convinced me to watch the second episode, Beautifully Broken. But apparently nothing much happened on her side and sadly her arc seems quite predictable. In fact it's also the case for some others.

Now that we have crucified the dead editor, spoiler alert - killed in my previous review, it's time to report what went right about the premiere. Let's start with… the beginning ! Sookie a fairy ? Now that ruined my entire theory of her being the stereotyped character of the pretty blonde next door. I supposed it was revealed in the finale, Evil is Going On, and I can imagine how the cliffhanger must have been jaw dropping for the long time fans. The twisted development of her arc was fantastic and served by a vivid production full of black light and exciting surprises ! If only the others were in the same vein, at least as long and not butchered by you know who. To sum things up Sookie is the only excuse you need to glimpse Anna Paquin's freshness. It's a dead bird ? It's a witch flying on a broom ? No it's #@%*& Sookie ! Paquin is okay but it's really Deborah Ann Woll who should make you KO. K like Kiss of Eternal Life™ ! O like in "Oh mistress Jessica please drink me hardly and fill me with immortality" ! It was also bittersweet to have Pam back and it's always a guilty pleasure to peep through Fangtasia's door. I also noticed a hot geek who should really intrigue you, specially considering the ending, but the sapphic interracial – add your list of forbidden fruits – sequence seemed misplaced and as a huge fan of Archer I can only complain about it.

So my opinion is mixed but even if it surprises me I think this fourth season has some potential. Despite all its flaws I still enjoyed the premiere. The entertaining and interesting scenes were too short and not numerous but they're the ones you will viciously dream about. Even Bill did his part this time and learning about his real mission regarding poor Sookie was almost shocking. As for Jason be prepared for the impossible ! Moreover now I realize how well edited the Bill speech and Eric interview sequences were. Great job my dead friend but you'll have to step up your game before we decide to disnail you from up there ! Ready for the upcoming installment, You Smell Like Dinner ? I am and I bet you will !

Sucked
tabipha28 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This episode has almost made me quit watching the series because it was done SO terribly!! The only thing POSSIBLY keeping me watching it until the end of the second episode at least is to see all the events surrounding Bill becoming the Vampire King and to see if they tell us HOW Eric and Pam were able to escape the silver and concrete and to see if Russell did too, since he was much older and therefore should be stronger even tho he was an ash face!! I don't have high hopes for the show tho given that after writing the above, it BARELY even seems like a reason to keep watching so episode two had better be way better!!
