If you've been following the Best Animated Feature Oscar for the past few years, perhaps you remember the 2013 nominee Ernest & Celestine, a gentle and generous children's movie from France, about the adventures of a bear and a mouse becoming best friends while on the run from the law. This year, two of that film's producers and one of its directors are back in the hunt with The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales, an anthology of stories about the inhabitants of a rural farmyard in France.
The film took a roundabout path to theaters. Based on comic books by Benjamin Renner – the Ernest & Celestine director, back to help usher his material to the screen, with co-director Patrick Imbert and co-writer Jean Regnaud – the three stories were initially intended to be episodes in a TV series. Somewhere along the way, they got promoted to feature film status, with...

Since The Flash began, its season-long arcs for the villains have followed roughly the same structure. The Big Bad secretly infiltrates Team Flash, they present some life-or-death scenario and then right before the season ends they're unmasked, giving Team Flash just enough time to defeat them with some "clever" solution.
However, season 4 is taking a radically different approach with new baddie The Thinker. While most of The Flash season 4 has been a welcome return to form, The Thinker represents a new, and much needed, approach, to the show's main villain. The season has barely begun but already there are five important factors that separate The Thinker from The Flash's villainous history.

Last weekend’s inaugural Animation Is Film Festival at the Tcl Chinese 6 Theater should have a definite impact on the Oscar race, as GKids’ stirring indie, “The Breadwinner,” won both the Grand Prize and Audience Award. Another GKids contender, “The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales,” a lighthearted barnyard animal anthology (directed by “Ernest & Celestine” Oscar nominee Benjamin Renner and Patrick Imbert). took home The Special Jury Prize.
Directed by Nora Twomey of Cartoon Saloon (“The Secret of Kells”), and executive produced by Angelina Jolie, “The Breadwinner” follows a strong-willed young Afghan girl who poses as a boy to help her family survive under threat from the Taliban.
With new Academy rules now allowing all eligible members to vote for animated features using preferential voting, the timing couldn’t be better for “The Breadwinner” honors. The Ireland-Canada-Luxembourg co-production is now poised to secure GKids’ 10th Oscar nomination.

2017-10-23T07:35:16-07:00'Walking Dead' Review: All-Out War Begins with Badly Aimed Bang
In a sign that season 8 of The Walking Dead might be the same kind of drawn-out affair that the past couple of seasons have been, this week's season premiere got the promised all-out war started in a stuttering, logically problematic way. Could we be facing another season where a simple goal eludes the show's characters for episode after interminable episode? Forbes' Erik Kain fears that might be the case. Read on, but beware the spoilers.
Via Forbes.
There's a moment in the Season 8 premiere of The Walking Dead that transformed a reasonably decent season opener into an hour of television I wanted to smash to pieces with Lucille.
The members of Hilltop, Alexandria and the Kingdom, have all come together to bring the war to Negan's doorstep. That's not figurative, either.

Aiming to make an impact this Oscar season, the inaugural Animation Is Film Festival from GKids, the Annecy International Animation Festival, Variety, and Acifa-Hollywood launches October 20-22 at the Tcl Chinese 6 Theater.
The festival will present a selection of new animated feature films from Asia, Europe, South America, and North America, with juried and audience prizes and filmmakers attending most screenings. Additionally, the festival will feature studio events, special screenings, short film programs, and a Vr lounge.
Aif seems well timed: The Academy now allows all members to vote for animated features, using preferential voting. However, it remains to be seen what the dynamic will be in terms of mainstream versus indie nominees.
GKids, which has nine Oscar nominations (including this year’s “My Life as a Zucchini”), has seven movies in contention this season; four showcase in competition at Aif. The highlight is “The Breadwinner” (October 20), a coproduction of Ireland,...

With exactly three weeks to go now until the next season commences, one could say that it’s long overdue for The CW to give us Supernatural fans some new footage. Sure, a very brief promo has been airing during commercial breaks as of late, but it didn’t really offer any hints when it came to upcoming storylines.
Thankfully, that all changed today as a decently meaty trailer has found its way online. Most interesting is the inclusion of newcomer Jeffrey Vincent (General Hospital), who’s rumored to be playing Asmodeus, one of the surviving Princes of Hell. Truth be told, all signs point toward that being Vincent’s role, as we can plainly see his character attempting to fill the power vacuum left in the wake of Lucifer and Crowley’s absences. Still, it remains uncertain if he’s indeed The big bad this season.

Over the last couple years, Marvel Studios has done a better job of making memorable villains in their movies than in years past — this year has been especially good in that regard with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming. That being said, they still haven’t been able to match the baddies that have populated the Marvel Netflix world. With the likes of Kingpin in Daredevil, Cottonmouth in Luke Cage, and of course, Kilgrave in Jessica Jones, they’ve managed to create wonderful, three-dimensional villains that the films could only dream of (in all fairness, they get a lot more screen time to develop them).
Sadly, the closing episode of Jessica Jones Season 1 saw Jessica snap the neck of the chillingly demented Kilgrave, played by David Tennant. There’s no doubt about it — the dude deserved to die — but the dynamic between him and Jessica was so captivating,...

A lively trio of cartoons that are wacky, heartwarming and wise, The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales (Le grand mechant renard et autres contes) showcases an animal farm like no other: The titular fox is far less cunning than he is both kind and nurturing, a duck has no idea how to actually swim, a lizard shows up out of nowhere and starts speaking Mandarin and a stork is far too lazy to deliver the baby in its beak.

Just last night, I was reflecting on how Arrow spawned such a rich universe – now a multiverse – from its humble beginnings as an unrelated followup to Smallville. With timelines being rewritten and characters appearing in live action that we previously never thought possible (Wild Dog, anyone?), we truly are living in a golden age of fandom.

Let’s start with the November 7 episode of Supergirl, the interestingly titled “Crossfire.” From what we can gather, it almost sounds like Kara will be taking on Intergang.

This fall’s four-way crossover between Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will pit the super crew against DC Comics’ Dominators, TVLine has learned. Arrow and Legends Ep Marc Guggenheim says he’s “taking inspiration from a DC crossover from the late 1980s known as Invasion!, which featured an alien race called the Dominators, who’d previously vexed the Legion of Superheroes.
“We’re using cutting-edge prosthetics and computer effects to achieve a feature film-quality look,” Guggenheim adds, “which is faithful to Invasion! artist Todd McFarlane’s interpretation of the characters.

Helicopter footage released Monday showed police in Tulsa, Oklahoma, allegedly shooting and killing an unarmed African-American man on Friday night after he walked toward his SUV with his arms raised. Terence Crutcher, 40, can be seen walking slowly toward his car, which authorities alleged had been left abandoned and running in the middle of the road, according to NBC News. The video footage shows an officer following Crutcher slowly from behind with a gun pointed at him. In the video, Crutcher approaches the driver's side door before dropping to the ground after being shocked with a stun gun. He was fatally shot moments after.

With a wavering hand, I cracked the seal on Green Lanterns: Rebirth #1 and Rebirth: Green Lanterns #1. That was not a typo. Just the crazy dumb way DC Comics wanted to release the first pair of issues concerning their emerald knights in this new and lovey-dovey DC Comics era. I read both books while my four-year-old bathed.
“What’s that dad?” He inquired. “Dat Gween Wanturn?”
“Yeah buddy.”
“No, it’s not. Why there two? There not two Gween Wanterns…” Why indeed, Bennett.
Why indeed. Well, as Geoff Johns and new scribe Sam Humphries are rebirthing the Gl universe, they start with two distinct directions. Stalwart Gl Hal Jordan is called off-world to deal with yet another massive threat that threatens the Corps whilst Earth is defended by a pair of rookie ring slingers: the he’s-not-a-terrorist Simon Baz, and the shut-in-Marc-never-heard-of Jessica Cruz. The big bad Marvel villain Thanos has been lurking in the shadows in the McU just waiting to strike and unleash hell on the universe since he was teased at the end of the first Avengers movie. That time is upon us, and the fury of the Mad Titan will explode in the two Avengers: Infinity War films.
The movies are said to be bringing in a ton of characters from the McU which will include members of the Avengers and members of the Guardians of the Galaxy. While speaking with Moviefone, Josh Brolin, the actor who plays Thanos, revealed that the whole story of the two films were revealed to him recently and it blew him away. Here's what he said:

Could have been assembled entirely from clips from other movies — mostly the Star Wars prequels — and would have been better if it had been. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): never hopeful about based-on-videogame movies
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Ah, so there’s my answer, once again.
I was wondering how that standard movie philosophy still applied to me. You know, that standard movie philosophy that is not only the stuff but the actual stuffing of 99 percent of wish-fulfillment genre fantasy movies for decades now. I approached Ratchet & Clank with great anticipation. Can I do anything? Can I be anything I want to be? Am I destined for greatness, to save the world or even the whole galaxy even if I am a foolhardy, thoughtless, unfocused screwup with almost nothing to my name but maybe some undisciplined smarts and outsized aspirations to grandeur?...

Our Lethal Weapon lookbacks continue - but was Lethal Weapon 3 the one that lost what made Riggs and Murtaugh such a comination?
Ever have one of those friends who was an absolute hoot when you were younger, but then kind of went a bit weird and annoying on you? You used to have such a laugh, but now they just reminisce about fun times instead of actually having any. They used to be funny, but now every joke they make seems to fall flat. They used to feel edgy and cool, but now they just come across as crass and patronising. And they keep bringing along their new friend that no one likes and is annoying as hell... and who looks an awful lot like Joe Pesci with a peroxide hairdo.
My friends, what you have just read is actually a deep, complex and very clever analogy.

The Big Bad has been in our midst all season long on The Originals. Only now the difference is everyone is onto Lucien. Hayley and Klaus investigate what he’s doing with reported missing wolves while the rest of the family take a literal trip down memory lane in Mystic Falls. A rare Matt Donovan sighting topped off this exciting episode. For all intents and purposes, I’m taking a stab at a simple new nickname for whatever Lucien 2.0 actually is: FrankenLucien. He’s a monster hybrid Original wannabe with extra strength werewolf venom to take down any vampire. He’s been reverse

The latest from evangelical production company Pure Flix is a dull courtroom drama, but unlike the previous film, it isn’t quite silly enough to be entertaining
When conversation turns to the entertainment value of the recent “faith-based” films aimed at the Us evangelical market, inevitably someone will say: “Nothing tops that Kevin Sorbo one.” The picture in question is God’s Not Dead, an outrageously slapdash, inarticulate movie filled with ludicrous plotting, inelegant staging and one of cinema’s most absurd endings. Shot for only $2m, it grossed more than $60m, enabling its production company, Pure Flix, to release follow-ups such as Do You Believe? and Faith of Our Fathers. You want to know the biggest difference between How to Get Away With Murder and Shondaland's newest addition, its Tgit replacement The Catch? Waaaaaay less murder. Instead, The Catch is about a badass private investigator who takes down art thieves and other con people—only to discover her loving fiancé has actually been conning her the whole time. That's right, ABC's Thursdays at 10 replacement is not a broody drama, it's a soapy caper with fun music and sexy leads (Mireille Enos as the investigator, Alice Vaughan, and the eternally babein' Peter Krause as her deceitful hubby-to-be). It's way slicker and brighter than Htgawm. The big bad, until they discover it's actually...

"You've been gone too long, Alice. And do mind your step..." Disney debuted a new 90-second TV trailer for the Alice in Wonderland sequel during the Grammys this year. We've already featured one teaser trailer and the Super Bowl TV spot for Alice Through the Looking Glass, directed by James Bobin, but this one has even more trippy, colorful footage of Alice's journey through time and space. The big bad villain in this one is Time, metaphorically and psychically manifested as a character played by Sacha Baron Cohen. In addition, everyone is back: Mia Wasikowska as Alice, the late Alan Rickman as the Blue Caterpillar, with Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, and Stephen Fry as the Cheshire Cat. You have to see this footage for yourself - I'm actually very impressed by this trailer. Consider me curious. Here's the new TV trailer for James Bobin's Alice Through the Looking Glass,...

I love it when I’m wrong. I love to be put in my place. Tough love, kiddos, is often the best kind of love. So, just a few weeks ago I shouted at the heavens “Why isn’t there a Spotify of comic books yet, damnit?!” And with that, I figured the universe would laugh at me and that would be that. But nay, dear reader! Not even a day had passed with my posting before I was politely pinged by the founder of a newly minted app by the name of Comic Blitz. And thus I’m here to redact my previous cursing of the heavens – to a point.
Comic Blitz is as I’d demanded; an app that collects a multitude of publishers’ work and offers the entirely of their expanding catalog to the public for a small monthly fee. At the time I cracked open my...

When Warner Bros unveiled the latest, full trailer for the upcoming cinematic juggernaut, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, there was a wide range of reactions. Some were ecstatic and excited, while others were disappointed that the villains appeared to be revealed so far in advance of the March 2016 release date. Lex Luthor and Doomsday feature prominently in the preview footage – in amongst clips of the Caped Crusader and the Man Of Steel facing off against each other – and many felt that this was a step too far in terms of marketing.
That disappointment is based on the assumption that Lex Luthor and Doomsday are in fact the main villains of the piece and, if that proved to be true, then an early reveal would indeed lead to something of an anti-climax in theatres. However, what are the chances that one of the biggest Hollywood studios would make such an error in judgement?...

Suicide Squad might just have ultimately stolen the thunder of the once-planned Green Arrow movie. Here's what happened...
There’s no shortage of superhero movies nowadays, but not all the comic book film ideas touted around in Hollywood end up getting made. Some superheroes just can’t catch a break when it comes to the big screen.
One of these is Green Arrow, aka Oliver Queen. Sure, he has his own TV show on The CW, but the emerald archer still hasn’t been in cinemas, or in any of the known plans for DC Entertainment and Warner Bros’ expansive upcoming movie slate. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Suicide Squad, Cyborg, The Flash and even Green Lantern all have movies in the works right now, but Oliver Queen is still out in the cold with only his goatee and his sleeveless hoodie to keep him warm.

ill Murray has become somewhat notorious for never picking up the phone. literally. Years ago, the legendary star decided to replace his agent with a 1-800 number and a rarely-checked answering machine, and as a result he really only ever takes on projects that spark his interest in a big way. Being super selective is obviously a nice change of pace in Hollywood, but the unfortunate side effect is that he.s missed out on being in some amazing films over the course of his career. The Washington Post has dug through author Robert Schnakenberg's new tome "The Big Bad Book Of Bill Murray: A Critical Appreciation Of The World's Finest Actor," and has culled together a list of the various big titles that Murray has missed out on in the last few decades. It.s a surprisingly substantial record, and while you can see all of the titles there,...

Aren't most Disney villains really just misunderstood loners who are maybe a wee bit too awesome for the people around them to appreciate? No? Well, Elsa did not end up the villain of "Frozen," but not only was that one of the original plans for the character, a new video shows how easy it would be to re-edit the existing footage to make her The Big Bad.
BloodBlitz Comedy -- the YouTubers behind Harry Potter as the villain and an attempt to show Joffrey as the hero of "Game of Thrones" -- once again played spin doctors with Queen Elsa. In the 2-minute video, Princess Anna appears to be in danger as her "demented" "monster" of a sister tries to use her powers to kill her.
Check it out:
It's like a horror movie. But maybe evil Elsa and evil Harry should go out for a drink sometime. Just saying.

MTV have unveiled the first full trailer for the fifth season of its supernatural drama series "Teen Wolf". The big bad for this season seems to be a group that combines science with the supernatural, including a creation that seems akin to the clockwork Kroenen from the "Hellboy" comics and film.
The new trailer also gives us a glimpse of the new character Theo (Cody Christian) who appears to have a past tied to Beacon Hills. Season five's two-part premiere airs June 29th.

DC doesn't have the greatest track record with their cinematic endeavors, but when it comes to television, they've had some amazing hits. However, outside of animation, they didn't really branch out to many of their second tier heroes until Smallville hit the air. We were then introduced to not only the young Clark Kent, but eventually Green Arrow, Cyborg, Aquaman, Impulse and many other heroes before its ten year run ended. A year and a half later, producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg brought us Arrow, starring Steven Amell as Oliver Queen in a darker, grittier take on the hero (which has borrowed more than a little from the Batman comics), who has returned home to find that his city has been run down by corrupt politicians and a seedy criminal element. Taking on the guise of Arrow, he sets out on his own to take his city back, only...

Japanese Anime Kill La Kill kicked into a whole new gear in 2014. We salute a daring, daft series available now on Netflix...
Kill La Kill. Regardless of what it means - allegedly it’s a series of Japanese double-entendres - that title is a bomb-blast: two kills and a dose of French sophistication for good measure. It's a violently amusing name for the anime series, promising claret by the bucketload, a ticking brain (or just the right amount of snark) and the everlasting appeal of total nonsense. Logic may apply, be it worldly or otherwise, but you're already set for the rules to be broken.
