This show is not bad at all, in fact, it's pretty dang good.
gergyslurp21 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Here's the deal, I don't watch a lot of Shoujo anime, I just consider it to be the Japanese equivalent of Rom-Coms, in an attempt to get people's hopes up. This show however, proved me wrong.

I enjoyed this show, because of how realistic it is. It focuses on a main female protagonist named Mei, who has learned to distance herself from others in an attempt to keep her emotions safe. She isn't very social and can be somewhat cold, leading to further ridicule by other girls in her grade, and so her perpetual cycle of her not trusting anyone grows deeper and deeper.

That is until she, um, 'meets' a boy named Yamato. By kicking him. After thinking that he was flirting inappropriately with her when it really was another guy. However, this doesn't really bother him and he instantly becomes fascinated with her. The reason is that while he may seem extroverted, he also deals with similar problems that Mei does. The series revolves around her opening up to him, and becoming more attuned to her social life.

Yet another reason I like it is because of it's relatively tame content. A lot of Shoujo animes feature many perverted characters that obsess over the opposite gender. If you watch anime, you know the kind of characters I'm talking about. However, I can only think of one off the top of my head that can come across that way, but he only pretends to be like that to be funny. There isn't much talk about sexual activity, and it's mostly given a negative connotation when it is, which is a good thing, considering they're all in High School.

All in all, the characters are deep, and the soundtrack is pretty great as well. The only reason that this get's an 8 is that the plot isn't in focus, instead it hyper-focuses on the characters, but this series makes it work. After all, the path of love isn't without challenges. I enjoyed watching it, and I don't know why this series gets so much hate. I hope you give it a chance, as it is definitely a series that is great when you get into it.

Good enough romantic anime but needed work too...
Irishchatter26 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Now I'm not a fan of this anime but it does reflect on loneliness in school and the fact, being an outcast isn't a great journey. I thought Mei and Yamato were matched well regardless, if she's a difficult one to talk to and Yamato was always the one who got her back especially making that pervy man to stop falling her. I have to admit though, there really should have been less than 14 episodes including the ova. I thought as time went on during my time watching each episode, I was getting very bored already.

If this type of story was an anime movie rather than a series, then it would be better. I am aware that there is a real life action movie on this but unlike any adaption to the story in a different form, it's going to be the same. I said the for "My Love Story!" if you wanna check that out!

I wouldn't call this the worst anime I've seen but not entirely the best. I still would reccommend anyone to watch this since the romance scenes were nice even for a high school romance anime. I'm giving this a 6/10 as I think it just needs work to satisfy me to give this a 10/10.

Meh for a lot of reasons.

Warning: Spoilers
I'm trying to take into account that these are high schoolers so they do get some points for some of the cringy moments and poor communication/ miscommunications.

I also appreciate that they have realistic depictions of bullying. And that the characters do engage in and talk about sex. Anime often skips over that anymore, but the reality is teenagers are often sex driven and spend a lot of time thinking and talking about it.

My issue, which honestly isn't really an issue, is that there are so many moments where Mei was awesome, had a backbone, wasn't afraid to stand up for herself.... Until she gets into a relationship. And suddenly she's push over, never gets angry at her boyfriends actions, always feels sorry for him rather than for herself, and let's him get away with things she would not be able to. That was so freaking annoying to watch. The male lead has some serious jealously issues for a guy who had no issue lying to his girlfriend about spending time alone at another girls house and causing rumors to spread. But when the one girl spreads false rumors with no actual basis about Mei, he gets jealous and confronts her and the second male lead.

The second male lead is superior to the main male lead. I will stand by that forever. He proved it time and time again during each episode. Everything her said to the main male lead during their argument/fight was true. And he was still man enough to apologize and try to make up with him.

Overall, it wasn't a bad show. I'm mostly going to chalk it up to it being written in the early 2000's when this was the norm. I mean does anyone remember the first twilight? Cringe. It's still adorable. And still has some good moments.

Perfect except...
moonrose_kylie13 August 2021
I loved this anime so very much. It was so beautiful. I would have given it a 10 if it wasn't for how stupid the ending was. It was more that it lacked an ending. It's almost like they were counting on a second season, but it's been nearly 10 years, so I'm quite sure that's not happening. It's a shame, it was so beautiful. Broke my heart to see it finish this way.

This deserves a better rating
danisbelmm10 January 2021
People are unnecessarily hating on this show💀 I get that it's not the perfect show but it's a pretty darn good romantic show. My true rating is 9/10 but since I'm seeing so much unjustified hate, I'll rate it 10/10.

Don't listen to people who hate on the show!! If you enjoy shoujo anime, then this is one of your best choices to watch!! Really good character and story progress. You'll really enjoy it!!

Not so special
Valena-Nami11 June 2021
I find the story really intresting and that;t why I gave it a 7. It give a different perspective than the most animes, but I find irritating and boring, due to the main female character and the slow progress. But you should try it your self.

I think this anime is phenomenal
winterfoxweeb6 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is one my cousin recommended and it was so good I watched 4 episodes in a day and finished the series in 3 days 😀. I don't belive the story is over I want more but this show is phenomenal, spectacular it got me in my feelings but I just love this anime so very much I'm finally gonna rewatch because it is so good there love story is not over thats why there is manga ❤. I love the couple so very much and went quick with the romance like yes I need that in more romance anime except if the couple is perfect and it is fun to watch them grow even though they don't know eachothers feeling sorry for the spoiler but just like kyo and toru I need a story that grows or a story that is there and we watch the relationships but this anime is refreshing and just perfect in my mind.

I love the romance in this but I get so annoyed when a new annoying girl to come for the popular boy. I get angry at the screen . Mei needs a break. The plot isn't great and it's bland.

Yet another victim of the Good-Short-Anime-Looking-For-A-Sequel syndrome
thysbe_j13 September 2020
I actually enjoyed this series quite a lot. The characters are deep and believable, their interaction is realistic, and the story is uplifting and touching. Unfortunately, instead of bringing it to a proper close at the end of the season, the creators aimed for leaving openings for another season, so the final chapters really drag out, and the ending is very unsatisfactory, which of course leads to the show not being renewed. In summary, this is not the best show out there, but it's a very decent show for after you're done with the smash hits, and well worth the time to watch.

An anime where "nothing" happens
amuru-8110520 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Nothing; except the trappings of first love and all it's bittersweet blossomings!

Enter a super shy girl burdened with feelings of hurt and being used and betrayed by others; who is suddenly faced with the advances of the most popular and attractive boy in the school. He goes out of his way to help her remove layer after layer of self-imprecation and chastisement till she finally sees his pure intentions; wanting to love her for herself. He is at once supremely self-confident and approachable, but suddenly experiences jealousy and misunderstanding like all forming relationships.

He learns to appreciate honesty and humility and she learns honesty and assertiveness! And boy are the two smitten with each other!

Still, they take the arduous and painful journey of slowly exposing their vulnerabilities to each other learning trust and true friendship.

And the audience is treated to a beautiful coming of age tale of supreme courage and growth; Mei having metamorphosized into a loving and caring person, despite all her fears and learning to say "I love you" to the one she adores.

And we see Yamato learn the difficult but satisfying lesson of having to love such a person and loving and helping her grow out of her shell!

"Kawaii" people, "kawaii"! The sexual innuendoes are just adorable without being scurrilous; met by flaming cheeks and averted eyes!

Enjoy!

Feel good one
manikandanramasamy-2068427 November 2023
I have completed the manga,it was a heartfelt ending. I always liked this kind of series, but it's almost 10 years and I'm quite sure balance of the mang won't be animated,if it will be animated somehow I would be very happy. Eventhough I'm damn happy to have the manga...it was a nice and feel good one. I enjoyed the characters transformation and development in the manga. There was all pure love that I was expecting. Sometimes it feels that the characters happiness gives us the joy and excitement.some will it is bad story, boring, but only the one who likes the patience in love will absolutely enjoy it. Every characters ending in manga was so beautiful especially megumi ,Kai and mei ,yamato.

Thanks for this amazing one.

If you're doubting watching this please just hit play. It builds up faster than a lot of animes like this and is very wholesome. Different anime style and the cinematography is breathtaking. It has its up and downs but it makes you hold your breathe in the best possible way.

really boring.
muneerasgg30 December 2019
So nothing happens in this story, let me explain its a romantic series about a shy girl who doesn't have friends and the popular nice guy. the only problems they encounter during this whole thing is ppl's interfering their relationship, jealousy and stuff. then side characters being their usual side characters doing side character stuff, seriously like one of them used to have a beef with the mc mei, and the suddenly they're friends?? and then she suddenly get a bf and he becomes part of the group?? like out of nowhere.. but because it's side character I guess they didn't care enough to explain?.. to be honest I was disappointed because I was really anticipating this to be good because they looked really different than your usual romantic anime looking couple.. yeah just skip it and watch kimi ni todoke insead..

Avoid this one!
gergelyh-1559617 January 2018
"Say I Love You" is a rather typical but really well-made shoujo manga, but the anime series does not do it justice at all. While the music is decent and the backgound arts are nice (the facial expressions and movements not so!) I felt that Mei's character was really badly presented here. She is supposed to be very shy but intelligent (she can give some good advice to grown-ups) and sometimes she can be surprisingly violent -- especially when her shyness is challenged. But in the anime she moves and talks so slowly as somebody with severe brain damage. And nothing remained from her prickly side, only the kick that starts he whole love story -- and that kick remains unmotivated and unbelievable this way. Well, that side of her is mostly drawn in the chibi style frames of the manga, so they fell victim when the makers of the anime decided not to use chibi characters at all! (Why oh why? Every anime fan likes the chibis!) Although there is much more than that in the manga, for the TV episodes they chose stories that all follow the same scheme: Mei gets confused for some reason (mostly because she tries to be less jealous than the normal level nature permits) and in the end is is the inncent Yamato who apologizes. The viewer can not help wondering why and for how long can he endure this... So the anime not only does not add anything to the comics, it will distort your image of the main characters if you watch this first! And some very interesting supporting characters are entirely left out. (E.g. Yamato's older brother.) One last warning: this anime seems to be hard to find here on IMDB, so some reviewers found the live action movie instead. From the 3 reviews currently readable there, two are actually written about this TV series. See http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3088084 !

Not worth watching.
dussaultjulien13 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This anime was great up to a certain point, but when the writer decides that the main character's love interest is a scumbag hypocrite halfway through the series, it kind of makes you not want to watch it anymore. This whole series is about the relationship let's slowly builds between the main character and her love interest. Of course there is always going to be strife when it comes to a high-school anime, but seriously come on. The love interest confesses his love to the main character, but also kind of states that he loves another girl and completely abandons the main character to go and help the other girl in the picture constantly, while completely ignoring the the main character's feelings about it all. It makes absolutely no sense and it's just plain old dumb. I hate anime where halfway through the series you have to stop watching because it's so ridiculous. The main character have been building self-confidence throughout the entire series and had it stripped away from her by the person who was supposedly supposed to love them over and over again. It makes you not trust the main character, and to be honest makes you not interested in that person anymore. They obviously don't truly care about the person that they have confessed their love to so why do they even bother confessing? It defeats the whole purpose.

Good start but....
Padme-87325 August 2020
The anime has great animation and started with a very interesting story, as well as the secondary characters, but as the story went on, the relationship between the main characters started to feel empty. During the whole series they always had communication problems that they never solved, is kinda understandable because they are high school students but this situation happend in almost every episode so they never really showed any progress or chemistry (in my opinion), this made the anime feel tedious to watch.

Overrated, rushed story, no connection between characters
awithluv30 January 2020
3 Episodes in- I had to drop. This anime just feels too rushed and it feels like there's no real love story between the main leads. They just met and suddenly they love each other? It feels rushed and not smooth at all. I seriously don't understand why the ratings are so high. If you want a similar anime that's well made, go for Kimi Ni Todoke, it's MUCH better and worth the time.

Lead girl turns to insecure mush when dating the hottest guy in school
mumooshka2 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Pretty much the title of my review says it all. Loner girl in high school causes most popular dude to fall for her because she stood up for herself by kicking him down the stairs.

Then they date, she's reluctant with NO self esteem and the whole series is all about her self doubt caused by dating said hot guy and her reluctance to communicate or show the fire which first atrracted him to her in the first place Why they are together is a mystery. They have a lack lustre relationship and he coasts along and then shows intent of getting down with her The most interesting character who I wished she would date is the mohawk dude. Speaks his mind, is totally honest and would have been better for Mei than people pleaser to the point of hurting Mei boyfriend I couldn't wait to get through it so I could watch another series.

Didn't love it, didn't hate it...
baileycookie2 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm giving it a five it was slow which I was fine with but after ep 7-8 the main characters just started having little fights/emotional breakdowns. I feel like the main couple should've broken up because they seemed happier as friends vs boyfriend/girlfriend. There aren't to many curse words said and it's pretty chill besides the some what melodramatic later episode.

Trigger warning....

It talks about Anorexia, which is a tough subject to talk about, I hope it didn't trigger anyone but I think they actually did a good job talking about it.

(Ps episode 4 is the one that talks about it the most, skip if needed) 👍🏼
