Buddy Duress, an actor best known for starring opposite Robert Pattinson in the Safdie brothers 2017 film Good Time, has died. He was 38. Born in May 1985 in Queens, New York, Duress landed his first big-screen acting gig in Benny and Josh Safdie‘s 2014 psychological drama film Heaven Knows What, where he played low-level drug dealer Mike. He would collaborate with the Safdie brothers again in their 2017 feature Good Time, which stars Pattinson as a small-time criminal who tries to free his developmentally disabled brother (Benny Safdie) from police custody while attempting to avoid his own arrest. Duress played Ray, a criminal recently released on parole. Duress’ other credits include Person to Person (2017), The Mountain (2018), The Great Darkened Days (2018), Pvt Chat (2021), Flinch (2021), and the 2022 black comedy Funny Pages,...

In a recent interview, acclaimed actor Pedro Pascal reflected on the pivotal role that helped launch his career – the fan-favorite character of Oberyn Martell on HBO’s mega-hit fantasy series Game of Thrones. Pascal credits the show’s creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, for taking a chance on him when he was still a relative unknown. He believes that without that breakout opportunity, he may not have landed major follow-up roles in shows like Narcos, The Mandalorian, and his latest hit, The Last of Us.

"Your mountain is your ancestor." Madman Films has unveiled a first look teaser trailer for a New Zealand film called The Mountain, marking the feature directorial debut of New Zealand actress Rachel House (from Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Thor: Ragnarok and tons of other films). It's currently set to open in Nz this March, though it still doesn't have release dates set outside of the country. This looks great! I want to see it! The film explores the journey of three young people as they seek solace under the watchful gaze of the Taranaki mountain (aka "Taranaki Maunga" - see Google Maps) and companionship in the spirit of adventure. Starring Elizabeth Atkinson, Reuben Francis, and Terence Daniel. They are also joined by Troy Kingi (Muru), Byron Coll, Fern Sutherland, and Sukena Shah. There's just enough footage in this teaser to convince me this is a must watch film, with a similar vibe as Wilderpeople.

Sophia Lillis and Hannah Gross could be sisters in real life. The pair have a rapport that seems like it might have developed across years of inside jokes and shared experiences, which makes it easy to see why they work so well as siblings alongside Michael Cera in the movie "The Adults," which hits theaters Aug. 18.
Gross and Lillis play sisters who live together in their childhood home in a suburban town that feels slightly faded, like a memory lived in too long. Rachel (Gross), who took over responsibility for the house after their parents' deaths, works at the local radio station, while Maggie (Lillis) has dropped out of college, claiming it stifled her creativity.
The fractures in the pair's relationship become visible when their older brother, Eric (Cera), arrives for a very brief visit for the first time in three years.

Unifrance has debuted an official trailer for a mysterious, intriguing film titled The Mountain, made by a French filmmaker named Thomas Salvador. Salvador also wrote and stars in this as the lead character, Pierre, who gets lost in the mountains after being pulled in by their magnificent mystery, and majesty. This first premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar, but I didn't see it until the Sitges Film Festival in the fall - here's my full review. Pierre, a Parisian engineer, goes up in the Alps for his work. Irresistibly attracted by what surrounds him, he camps out alone high in the mountains and leaves behind his everyday life. Up there he meets Léa, a chef of an alpine restaurant, while strange glows glitter in the deep mountain. It takes place in Chamonix near Mont Blanc, in the French Alps, and everything changes when he notices...

Tom Cruise can’t come to the rescue too soon. Despite some good holds and a decent showing for the older-audience “Downton Abbey: A New Era” (Focus), grosses remain in the doldrums.
Only two weeks after Marvel and Disney got summer off to a strong start with “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” attendance has returned to its anemic state. This weekend will amass around 74 million for yet another sub-100 million total — virtually unprecedented for May.
That’s half of the same weekend in 2019, reducing our ongoing four-week comparison to 58 percent for the same 2019 period. That’s close to the all-time low for this year.
“Top Gun: Maverick” has an anticipated four-day take of 100 million; considerably more is possible. It should lead Memorial Day weekend to 2019 parity, when “Aladdin” took in 116 million. For the month overall, we’re looking at 75 percent. Strong individual results don’t make up for...

Say “Montana” to anyone currently consuming a well-balanced media diet, and they’re likely to immediately think of Yellowstone, the unbelievably popular Dynasty-for-cowboys TV show that takes place in the “Treasure State.” Taylor Sheridan’s modern-day Western doesn’t have a lock on contemporary narratives in the region, to be sure, but it does cast a slightly odd shadow over the similarly looming landscapes of Scott McGehee and David Siegel’s Montana Story. They even have a handful of coincidentally similar aspects in common: Both have ill fathers at their centers,...

After nearly two weeks of play, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (Disney) sits at 688 million worldwide. It is headed to around 1 billion ultimately in theaters, a fine achievement, more so for a Marvel entry that clearly has not achieved the level of satisfaction that top entries like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” did.
The biggest opening of the year has hit its mark, but won’t exceed it. A 67 percent second weekend domestic drop, at the high end for comic book blockbusters, assures that. With 292 million in, look for it to easily surpass “The Batman,” currently at 369 million in U.S./Canada returns.
…but only because it opened with 52 million more than the D.C. Comics’ hit. Matt Reeves’ blockbuster made 66.5 million its second weekend, off 50 percent. Among recent start-of-summer Marvel releases, the drop has been within a lower, steady range of 55 to 59 percent. Last December, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” also fell 67 percent,...

A trio of Frank Zappa’s Rust Belt-area concerts, performed during one of the rock legend’s most artistically fertile period, are the focus of an upcoming six-cd box set dubbed Zappa/Erie.
The box set captures a string of shows Zappa and his band (three different lineups) performed along the border of Pennsylvania and Ohio from 1974 to 1976, a three-year stretch that yielded his classic LPs Over-Nite Sensation, Apostrophe (‘), and One Size Fits All.

“Young Sheldon” isn’t so young anymore — and as the hit CBS comedy marks its 100th episode, the series is growing up along with its title star. Co-creator and executive producer Steve Molaro told Variety that as Sheldon, played by Iain Armitage, enters his teenage years and starts attending college, more grown-up storylines have started to reflect that change.
“It’s hard to believe that we started out the pilot [in 2017] when Iain was eight years old,” Molaro said. “And Raegan Revord, who plays Missy, was eight or nine. So we’ve come a long way. Back then we were doing more family-oriented stories and kid-friendly stories because we had two nine-year-olds on the show. But now that they’re young adults and teenagers, we’re finding we can really open up the kinds of stories we’d like to tell and let things get more adult with everybody. And that...

LL Cool J is pulling out of this year’s “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2022″ after testing positive for Covid-19. The ABC special, which is marking its 50th anniversary this year, is still moving forward as planned with hosts Seacrest and Liza Koshy, but will have to make an adjustment due to the hip-hop star’s absence.
“I know it’s disappointing to the millions of fans but my test came back positive for Covid, which means I’ll no longer be able to perform as scheduled at ‘New Year’s Rockin’ Eve,'” LL Cool J said in a statement. “We were ready and I was really looking forward to ringing in 2022 in my hometown in a special way, but for now I wish everyone a healthy and happy New Year. Paramount Network, formerly known as Tnn and Spike TV, has found its flagship series in Yellowstone, the Montana-set drama starring Kevin Costner currently airing its fourth season. It’s no surprise that the show’s immense popularity would create the desire for a spinoff, and instead, sister streaming service Paramount+ has opted for a prequel. Set more than a century before the original, 1883 is a pretty straightforward Western tracking the establishment of the Yellowstone Ranch that serves as the center property of the franchise…
These two shows come from Taylor Sheridan, writer of the underrated Hell or High Water and also director of Wind River and Those Who Wish Me Dead. After I sampled the pilot, I didn’t stick with Yellowstone, even though I did enjoy Longmire, which had a similar vibe, and I continue watching the Montana-set Big Sky for unknown reasons since it...

Did Merry and Mark's love story lasso its way around your heart?
It was a cowgirl kind of love story with Mistletoe and Montana, and you know what?
It's nice that they've been switching things up with the locations of these films. Cowgirls and ranchers need love, too, and the trend of appreciation for places like Montana (thanks to shows like Yellowstone) have livened things up from the norm.
Mark, a city slicker software engineer, was the perfect guy to stick on a ranch, so we could giggle at him making a fool of himself.
It's adorable that he held on so tightly to Paradise from his time spent there as a youth and wanted to relive those days and create memories with his kids. It's such an unexpected way to spend the holidays. Typically, folks opt for fancy resorts or a ski lodge.
You could tell he wanted Timmy...

Lebanon’s leading avant-garde filmmaker Ghassan Salhab has always been unapologetically art house, scraping away at traditional forms of narrative to create elliptical works reliant on unfussy compositions and layered sound design. His films explore liminal emotional states connected with Lebanon’s troubled history, capturing a sense of disturbance that practically quivers with unexpressed tension. His latest, “The River,” concludes a trilogy consisting of “The Mountain” and “The Valley,” and while it’s his most objectively beautiful feature yet, it also gives nothing away, demanding a heightened engagement with both his artful mise-en-scène and his nation’s psychological state. As such, “The River” will meander through the more experimental waters of festivals and showcases where Salhab may even pick up new acolytes thanks to the film’s striking aesthetic.
Of the three films, “The Valley” had the most of what could vaguely be called a plot, though its concerns went...

Isaac Lee’s Exile Content Studio and Diego Enrique Osorno, whose “1994” must rate as one of the best series produced by Netflix in Mexico, have moved into production in Spain on “Montaña,” the first feature-length documentary to emerge from an Exile-Osorno first look deal announced in 2020.
Starting its shoot earlier this year in Chiapas, the southern-most state in Mexico, “Montaña” relates a current and historical mission by an indigenous movement, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (Ezln), to build alliances in Europe.
The Ezln invited Osorno and ace Uruguayan cinematographer Maria Secco to join a delegation on a Nordic ship, La Montaña, as it made what Exile describes quite correctly as a highly symbolic voyage from the so-called New World to the Old.
After 52 days at sea, during which they shot hundreds of hours of footage, Osorno, Secco and an Exile production team are now continuing production in Spain.

In late May, word began circulating that NBC had unofficially signed off on a plan to renew bubble dramedy Good Girls for a shortened fifth and final season, one that would give fans something that has become increasingly elusive in the broadcast-tv landscape: closure. All three of the series’ leading ladies — Christina Hendricks, Mae Whitman and Retta — agreed to take pay cuts to return for a reduced eight-episode swan song. Production was tentatively set to begin in Spring 2022. It was, for all intents and purposes, a done deal.
And yet, one month later, Good Girls was cancelled. As is often the case,...

Tina Turner joins the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2021 in Cleveland this October, along with Jay-Z, Gil Scott-Heron, Todd Rundgren, Carole King, Foo Fighters, and The Go-Gos. Tina is already an honoree as a member of Ike and Tina Turner, and she is also once again distinguishing herself from the group. Even before she went solo, Turner had star billing, such as her turn as the Acid Queen in Ken Russell’s film adaptation of The Who’s Tommy. But Tina had to skip the credits for her work with Frank Zappa, who was posthumously inducted into the Rock Hall in 1995.
Turner recently made a gracious exit from the stage in HBO’s feature documentary Tina. She is also highlighted in Apple TV+’s upcoming 1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything. This was the year Ike and Tina’s cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary” hit No.

Five new films, including “Spiral” (Lionsgate) from the lucrative “Saw” franchise, opened wide (at least 600 theaters) stateside. That is by far the biggest studio commitment to any week in a long time, with three at one time usually the most, and four rare.
Mid-May is normally prime for movie releases. This year, it’s Memorial Day when more prime titles will open. Optimism remains for then, but for now it’s treading water time. The expected much bigger “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount) along with “Cruella” (Disney) on May 28 will be a much better test of how close theaters are to providing grosses commensurate with their potential.
But a Top 10 of $24 million, with an overall take of perhaps $26 million, remains anemic considering the increased number of fresh films, combined with more theaters plus a general greater sense of safety in theaters. That sense is led above all by how “Spiral” did.

The Cannes Film Festival has delayed its highly anticipated press conference by one week, to June 3, Variety has learned.
The reason for the date change is an abundance of movies that have been submitted to the festival, according to an industry source. The Official Selection, in particular the competition, is expected to be larger than usual.
In a normal year, when the festival takes place in May, the lineup is unveiled one month before its start.
Cannes is still on track to open on July 6 with the world premiere of Leos Carax’s musical romance “Annette” with Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard. The 2021 edition should be in no shortage of major auteurs and stars. So far, two titles have been confirmed for the competition by Cannes chief Thierry Fremaux — “Annette” and Paul Verhoeven’s subversive period thriller “Benedetta.”

Larry McMurtry, the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer whose novels, such as “The Last Picture Show,” “Terms of Endearment” and “Lonesome Dove,” were turned into award-winning films and who won an Oscar for co-adapting “Brokeback Mountain,” has died, according to The New York Times. He was 84.
A spokesperson for McMurtry’s family confirmed his death to The New York Times. No cause of death was given.
McMurtry and his frequent collaborator Diana Ossana penned “Brokeback Mountain” based on Annie Proulx’s short story, taking the Western genre in which McMurtry so frequently worked in a new direction: a gay love story. The film saw this theme welcomed by large mainstream audiences for the first time and also won the Oscar for best director and was nominated for best picture.
McMurtry also shared a 1973 Oscar nomination with Peter Bogdanovich for the adaptation of McMurtry’s novel “The Last Picture Show.”

In an age of reboots and long-gestating sequels, Gremlins 3 remains oddly unrealized. While over 30 years have passed since 1990’s celebrated-but-divisive Gremlins 2: The New Batch stumbled at the box office, there’s been no shortage of fruitless teases ever since. Yet, the property still has a pulse, with an HBO Max animated prequel series in the works, and this week saw Zach Galligan reunite with Gizmo for a commercial that might provide the blueprint—story-wise and production-wise—for the threequel, as the star seems to hint.
The Mountain Dew Zero Sugar commercial (seen below), chock-full of franchise-evocative Easter eggs, shows movie protagonist Billy Peltzer (Galligan) hyping the soda before unwisely giving Gizmo a gulp (as if he didn’t know any better), leading to an all-too-familiar population outbreak. “You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone,” Billy Joe Shaver sang in his signature anthem “Live Forever.” The Texas songwriter died October 28th at 81 after suffering a stroke, immediately casting that lyric into stark reality. Just a few days prior, Jerry Jeff Walker died at 78 after a long bout with cancer. Both men were influential songwriters and personalities of the outlaw country movement and their deaths hit especially hard with those they influenced — including Ryan Bingham.
