Film and television producer Will Packer will serve as the jury president for the 2021 American Black Film Festival (ABFF).
The annual festival celebrates its 25th anniversary this year with a hybrid model, with live events held Nov. 3-7 in Miami Beach, Fla., followed by a week of virtual events on abffplay.com (available from Nov. 8-14).
The post marks a homecoming for Packer, who got his start when his independent feature film “Trois,” directed by Rob Hardy, premiered at the festival in 1999.
A longtime supporter of the ABFF, the prolific producer — who has earned more than $1.3 billion at the box office under his Will Packer Productions banner — has served on the festival’s advisory board. Packer has also premiered “Girls Trip,” “Think Like A Man Too,” “This Christmas,” “Takers” and “Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain” during the festival. In 2016, Packer received the Distinguished ABFF Alumni Award at ABFF Honors.

2016-10-12T15:27:24-07:00New Movies October 14: Kevin Hart and 'The Accountant'
This weekend probably won't be as wet and windy as it was on the East Coast last weekend, but it still could end up being pretty dreary at the box office. Three new wide releases debut in theaters this week, and just like in the past few weeks, none of the new movies is expected to be a huge hit.
The first of the week's new wide releases is The Accountant, a thriller starring Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Jon Bernthal and J.K. Simmons. Despite its obvious big-name cast, this one is getting largely negative reviews and not much social media buzz. Still, it's expected to take the top spot at the weekend box office with ticket sales in the vicinity of $15 million.
The next big new release is the comedy concert film Kevin Hart: What Now?...

Screen Gems’ action comedy The Black Phantom just took a giant step forward with word that A-lister Samuel L. Jackson is in talks to join Kevin Hart in the film, playing the title role. Jackson replaced Jamie Foxx in the role after the Django Unchained star was forced to depart due to scheduling conflicts.
Screen Gems has prioritized the comedy since the smashing success of Hart’s Ride Along, which, like The Black Phantom, found Hart being directed by Tim Story. This time around, Story is working from what was originally a spec script by Dave Lease and Megan Hinds. As for the plot, Deadline describes the film as, “an outrageously inappropriate comedy where no topic is off limits in an odd partnership formed between a clever double-crossed mob hitman (Hart) and the notorious hit man The Black Phantom, who has been hired to kill him.”

Few comedians currently have the sway of Kevin Hart, who has recently delivered a string of huge hits like Think Like a Man, Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain, Ride Along and About Last Night. And with Think Like A Man Too actually outpacing both its predecessor and surprise smash Ride Along in pre-sales going into the weekend, it’s a safe bet that Hart isn’t giving up his newly claimed throne as king of comedy quite yet. Now, we’ve got our first look at another Hart vehicle - The Wedding Ringer, in which he stars with Josh Gad.
The first trailer, though predictable, features some pretty funny jokes – “It looks like the cast of Goonies grew up and became rapists,” says Gad’s character of a group of bums that Hart’s best-man-for-hire wheels out as potential groomsmen. It looks like Hart has another hit on his hands,...

Kevin Hart is nothing if not a man with a plan. And so far, that plan appears to be working remarkably well. After years of honing his talents as a stand-up comic -- and, yes, after a few false starts while branching out into movies and television -- the North Philadelphia-born phenom has broken out as a multimedia star. He routinely sells out live performances throughout the world, his faux reality series "Real Husbands of Hollywood" is one of the highest-rated shows on the Bet cable network, and his films, well, let's put it like this: There have been few actors as ubiquitous on movie screens as Hart is right now since the 1960s and '70s heydays of Michael Caine and Gene Hackman. Consider: During the past two-and-a-half years, Hart has loomed large in such diverse fare as "Think Like a Man," "Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain" (a follow-up...

Chicago – Few figures have had less of an exciting domination of the world than Kevin Hart. In the past few years, the comedian has skyrocketed to leading fixture in the comedy scene, creating hit scripts out of films like “Think Like A Man” and “About Last Night,” while taking victory laps in his lacking stand-up features like “Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain”. The big problem is that these projects don’t justify his comic potential.
They don’t show, like his appearance in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” or his special “Seriously Funny,” why comedy benefits from having the hyperactive humor of Kevin Hart in its universe. Add another title to that list of disappointing successes with “Ride Along,” another box office hit (a sequel is due in January 2016), but one without a strong entertainment factor to really deserve it.
Rating: 2.0/5.0

Oscars buzz boosts UK box office and whether growling on a plane or voicing an animation, it's Liam Neeson's moment
• Review of The Lego Movie
• Review of Non-Stop
• More on the UK box office
The winner
Adding another £4.79m in the past seven days, The Lego Movie now stands at a sturdy £26.67m after three weeks of play. That puts it level with the lifetime tallies of blockbusters including Spider-Man 2 (£26.72m) and Ocean's Eleven (£26.47m), and ahead of fellow animations including Ratatouille (£24.80m) and Wall-e (£22.91m). The Lego Movie will pretty soon overtake the likes of Shrek (£29m) and A Bug's Life (£29.45m) and is clearly headed into the mid-30s (£m).
Although box office for The Lego Movie is certainly skewed to the weekend, its decent performance in the Monday-to-Thursday period suggests that it is picking up a true adult audience, rather than merely adult chaperones of children.

Kevin Hart is a profane, raunchy, and very successful stand-up comedian who broke big with his indie film Laugh At My Pain in 2011. Combining footage from an arena show in Los Angeles with a visit to Hart's hometown of Philadelphia, as well as a sketch parody of Reservoir Dogs, the film made a modest yet impressive amount of money at the box office. Since then, his profile has risen dramatically. He co-starred in the sleeper hit romantic comedy Think Like a Man in 2012, and in the past year has appeared in This Is the End, Grudge Match, and his second concert documentary, Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain, which was a much bigger hit than his first, not to mention last month's Ride Along,...

Cementing Kevin Hart's star status, Universal's comedy Ride Along is doing big business at the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday box office, where it could hit $39 million in its debut after a $13 million Friday. Ride Along, the latest film to target African-American consumers, stars Hart opposite Ice Cube and was directed by Tim Story (Think Like a Man). Last year, Hart took the box office by storm with stand-up comedy concert pic Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain, which took in north of $32 million. Ride Along, costing a modest $25 million to make, marks Hart's first turn

Last week, Lone Survivor targeted the top spot at the box office — and accomplished its mission with impressive marks. The Mark Wahlberg Seal picture grossed a stunning $37.8 million, and thanks to its “A+” CinemaScore, it’s set to bring in the big bucks once again this time around. Of course, two high-profile newcomers won’t make it easy for the drama over the extended Martin Luther King holiday weekend. Buddy cop comedy Ride Along has the best shot at breaking out, and it looks poised to earn back its budget (and then some) over the four-day frame. Paramount’s franchise...

Over a busy Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, buddy comedy Ride Along should take first place ahead of franchise reboot Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.Opening at 2,662 locations, Ride Along is essentially the comedy version of Training Day. In the rookie role is Kevin Hart, who has established a strong brand thanks to supporting turns in movies like Think Like a Man ($91.5 million) and his incredibly popular stand-up work (last Summer's Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain earned $32.2 million). Meanwhile, Ice Cube assumes the role of the veteran cop; Cube's last headlining role was 2008 box office bomb The Longshots, so it's unclear if he's much of a draw these days. The movie's real strength, though, can be found in its tagline: "Propose to this cop's sister? Rookie mistake." That line clearly explains what the movie is about, and suggests that there is something here for both men and women (one of the...

Patrick Wilson reprises his role as suburban dad Josh, a sceptic who resolutely denies the existence of a supernatural being even after witnessing irrefutable proof to the contrary

Where once only the classiest of film sagas were divided into "chapters", now such an affectation usually signifies a franchise that was never meant to be. Case in point: Insidious: Chapter 2, the answer to a cinematic question that nobody but its financiers were asking. Part one was an unabashedly camp haunted-house movie, made on a miniscule budget that was later recuperated 60-fold at the box office. So while its premise didn't call for a sequel, its balance sheet demanded one.
Patrick Wilson reprises his role as suburban dad Josh, a sceptic who resolutely denies the existence of a supernatural being even after witnessing irrefutable proof to the contrary, while Rose Byrne returns as his mildly perturbed-looking wife Renai.

As we look back on 2013's winners and losers, one to remember is Kevin Hart, whose stand-up-flick-with-a-bit-of-fiction-mixed-in “Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain” was a critical hit that became the 4th most successful stand-up film ever (he also starred in “Grudge Match," but never mind). Hart is kicking off 2014, meanwhile, with “Ride Along,” a cop comedy about a high-school security guard (Hart) being taken on a ride along by his prospective brother-in-law, who is an actual cop, played by everyone's favorite not-actual cop, Ice Cube. Cube's aim, of course, is to see if Hart is a good enough guy to marry his sister (Tika Sumpter), but the ride along turns out to be more testing than he really intends. “Ride Along” is directed by Tim Story, whose unpredictable back catalog includes recent hit “Think Like A Man” and both of the last decade's highly questionable “Fantastic Four” movies. It's out on January 17th,...

Moviefone's Top DVD of the Week:
"Pacific Rim"
What's It About? Guillermo del Toro's sci-fi adventure follows the rise of the Kaiju sea creatures, which threaten the future of mankind. In order to fight off the monstrous Kaiju, Jaeger robots are developed, which are controlled by two pilots who share a mental bond. In the face of an apocalypse, former pilot Raleigh (Charlie Hunnam) and trainee Mako (Rinko Kikuchi) are paired up to drive a Jaeger to save the planet.
Why We're In: Del Toro's sci-fi epic is great for every minute of its CGI spectacle ass-kicking. "Pacific Rim" was not only one of the most fun adventures of the summer, but it also featured solid performances from its two leads, along with Idris Elba. If you're looking for an action-packed film that will keep your eyes and ears entertained from start to finish, "Pacific Rim" is sure to please.

'Pacific Rim', 'The Heat', 'Maniac' and 'Eyes Without a Face' Lead This Week's New DVDs and Blu-rays
The Heat For the most part it seemed the majority of people enjoyed The Heat, at least on some small level. Personally I found it a little lackluster, at least for a theatrical offering, at home I expect it would play a little better as most films will while you're sitting on your couch. You can read my "C-" review right here and I expect if I were to watch it again that might move up to a C+... maybe.
