While the Screen Actors Guild nominations for TV went mostly as we predicted, there were a number of strong contenders left out in the cold, including Taraji P. Henson ("Empire"), Will Forte ("The Last Man on Earth"), Lily Tomlin ("Grace and Frankie"), Mo'Nique ("Bessie") and the entire cast of "American Crime." And because SAG combines lead and supporting performances on the TV side (it doesn't do this for the film folk), the competition was intense. See some of the other most significant SAG snubs below. Every year we are introduced to every TV networks next great hope. New offerings for viewers to make appointments for and stay tuned. It’s a difficult task these days given the number of options available to us; streaming and on demand is taking over, we all know this. So with this new batch of TV shows, let’s hope there is something worth maintaining this Golden Age of Television for a little while longer.
Here are the new shows that I’m most looking forward to this year as well as the returning favorites to take note of.
Better Call Saul
While a lot of people would say that this is a Breaking Bad spinoff/prequel that we didn’t ask for, it’s still has to be worth checking out. The series features Bob Odenkirk reprising his famous Breaking Bad role of Saul Goodman, six years before he met Walter White.

The creative minds of Friday Night Lights and Lost are teaming up.
Peter Berg, best known for showrunning Friday Night Lights and directing last year’s Battleship, will produce and direct an HBO pilot written by Damon Lindelof (Lost, Prometheus), EW has confirmed. The show is an adaptation of 2011 novel The Leftovers by Tom Perrotta, who is writing the pilot script along with Lindelof.
The Leftovers is a depiction of the Rapture (or the Sudden Departure, as the book calls it), focusing on the people of suburban Mapleton who are dealing with the disappearance of over a hundred people in their own small community.

Peter Berg has closed a deal to direct Damon Lindelof’s HBO drama pilot The Leftovers based on Tom Perrotta’s 2011 book. In addition, Berg and his producing partner, Sarah Aubrey, will serve as executive producers on the pilot as well as the series, should it go forward, alongside Lindelof, Perrotta, Ron Yerxa and Albert Berger. The project, co-written by Lindelof and Perrotta, takes place after the Rapture happens but not quite like it’s supposed to. It is the story of the people who didn’t make the cut… and a world that will never be the same. The pilot is produced by Warner Bros. TV where Lindelof, who will serve as showrunner on Leftovers, is under a rich overall deal. Berg, who also is directing and exec producing the NBC pilot Bloodline, is with Wme.

In what would be his first series regular role, Kenneth Choi (Sons Of Anarchy, Glee, 24) has been cast in NBC’s drama pilot Ironside, a reboot of the 1967 series. Written by Mike Caleo and directed by Peter Horton, it centers on Robert T. Choi, repped by Mosaic, TalentWorks and attorney Derek Kroeger, was recently seen in Captain America 2 and next co-stars in Wolf Of Wall Street. In another recent NBC drama pilot casting, another 24 alum, Tzi Ma, will appear opposite Skyler Samuels in NBC‘s drama pilot Bloodline.

It’s pilot season, which means your favorite out-of-work TV actors, actresses, creators and writers are getting a chance to return to the small screen once more.
Although we have yet to know what new series we’ll see next year, the networks have been busy selecting projects to consider for their schedules. So far, almost 100 scripts have been chosen, and audiences will only get to see a handful actually come to fruition.
Several are duds, but there are a few promising prospects that I hope network executives will keep around for the 2013-2014 season — even if it means they have to cancel old favorites to make room (just keep Parks and Recreation, Ok, NBC?).
Check out my choices for the best prospective pilots NBC and CBS have ordered, and come back tomorrow to see my picks for ABC and Fox:
