A lot going on
bellaschnellara19 February 2024
The opening scene! It took me a moment to figure out what was going on, but yes: apparently that night was all it took for Ed to give up piracy for good (or does he...?). The breakfast together was so cute and I love that Ed was able to open up to Stede a bit. One thing that was really well done was that although there's no big open conflict there, you can already see the seeds for their later miscommunication. They're happy together, but not quite on the same page.

I have to say, the reduced number of episodes shows in this ep. The overall plot is back, but it all seems a little rushed. Same with the Zheng/Olu meeting. I really wish this all could have had room to play out a bit more organically.

It's actually great to see Stede enjoy a bit of the acclaim he always wanted - although the inherent problems are also obvious. Oh and finally we get some Jackie&Ed chatting - love their dynamic!

Favourite line: I am a sea god!

Heartbreaking but genuine
leyla7s21 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
In this episode, our protagonists have to confront the worst of enemies: love and themselves. Stede is a new hero, finally accepted in the pirate community, and that being a first, it simply goes to his head and blind things a little. Ed has found love and a sort of tranquility, but doesn't want to be a pirate anymore. And so they clash, not realizing they're together in this thing called 'a relationship'. Both their fears of not being right or enough don't let them see what they always wanted and is already in front of them: a place (person) they belong to, someone who mirrors the other and at the same time brings out new, better bits. As said in the show, they "balance each other out", it's one of the reasons why they clicked so quickly in season 1, against all odds, but life's never that simple, right? Our flag means death portrays a love story in a most sincere way, thanks to a writing and a vision that don't resort to any rose-tinted lenses but just true (he)art. Conflict has to be had while one grows and learns, before the deserved happy ending.

Setting the stage for an epic finale
moodsformoderns23 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As with all the episodes in this season, this one covers a lot of ground. Those rooting for our main couple will find this one a heart-wrenching watch, as the differences in what Ed and Stede want long-term drive them apart (though, if the pattern of this season continues, they'll find their way back together before too long). Meanwhile, the final external conflict of the season (finally!) emerges with the return of Prince Ricky. With our lovers at odds and the entire pirate community in peril, this episode brilliantly sets the season up for what will surely be an action-filled and emotional finale.

An emotional episode
c-1538425 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode contains both comedic and heartbreaking moments, and the actors' excellent performances deliver these beautifully. There are key turning points in the main romantic storyline which are portrayed superbly by Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby. As well there are some lovely character moments for Izzy. The several pieces of classical music throughout the episode complement the scenes wonderfully. The final scene is a striking cliffhanger to lead into the finale episode. I am excited to see where the story goes next! I found this episode absolutely heartrending, but it is a testament to the hardworking cast and crew that it can make the audience feel so much.

Penultimate episode leading to epic finale
penniellington3 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Man, this was a complicated episode. It starts off so lovely, with Stede and Ed just enjoying each other in the afterglow of their night together. Ed even decides to throw his leathers overboard and change into Buttons' old clothes, to finally realize he is meant to be Ed, not Blackbeard.

But then...the gang leave the ship to go to the Republic of Pirates. And to Jackie's.

No one feels safe, but Jackie welcomes them with open arms after it's discovered that Stede killed the notorious Ned Lowe (the torturer from Ep 6). He and the gang get a hero's welcome.

Ed begins to realize that Stede's star is on the rise, and that he's loving the notoriety. Stede admired Blackbeard and wanted to be more like him. Ed admired Stede's genteelness, and wanted to be more like him. Now they are finally together, but at odds. Ed is ready to leave piracy and carve out a quiet life for he and Stede. But Stede is basking in the glory of his adventures.

It all comes to a head when Ed blurts out that their night together was a mistake and that he's leaving to become a fisherman. Stede is hurt and shocked, but let's Ed go.

I personally think this is because Stede knows they are meant to be together and that they'll reunite. It's why he let's him go for now.

sweet & very funny
madra_rua_6 November 2023
I know it sounds weird to describe anything in Our Flag Means Death as "realistic," but despite all the silliness and historical anachronisms the show has always cared a lot about emotional realism, and this episode really showcases it - the two lead characters' relationship is evolving fast and they both react to it in incredibly relatable if often frustrating ways. Aside from that it's also incredibly funny, with Stede returning to some of his season 1 overconfidence and cluelessness - he gets some of his best lines this season. Izzy's arc continues to be a bit rushed and I'm not sure I buy how completely and abruptly he's suddenly resolved a lot of his issues, but he gets some good lines too. Overall touching, hilarious, and a great lead-in to the finale.

Rhys Darby Nails It
mylifeiskindaok9 January 2024
Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet absolutely nails his role in this episode. Comparing this episode to the first one, seeing the change in Stede is only something Rhys could do. He puts all of this energy into convincing us of the character he's playing, and while having changed a lot, he still keeps those little things that make Stede himself, and stays true to the character. As a Stede lover, this episode was so fun to watch as we see this arc of Stede learning new things about himself and about his capabilities. We get to see his confidence grow, and it makes you feel proud of Stede for everything he's accomplished and how happy it makes him.

The depth of character development reaches new heights as the episode navigates the complexities of relationships, both platonic and romantic. Furthermore, Stede's quote to Zheng, 'The thing about mediocre men is, you never see them coming,' is a stroke of brilliance. Ahhhh my Steak Knives
MinestroneChad12 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Can't believe they killed my boy Steak Knives so quick. New favourite character and he's gone like that. O7, brave soldier.

But seriously, an epic episode. With the switch juxtaposition between Stede and Ed, both seemingly wanting to want the life the other has had - romanticising it. And it's necessary! How would they know the life that they've sort for so long isn't what they really want unless they indulge in it... way too far and chaotically?

Pulls on my heartstrings though. The emotional beats are played so well. Character reintroductions are thoughtful, cheerful. As always it's a brilliant mix of humour and emotion. I want more!!!!!

Warning: Spoilers
Amazing episode as always. The way it showcases Stede's character arc as well as flaws that make room for some amazing character development is incredible. In many ways, he and Ed sort of switched personalities, and it's really interesting (although heartbreaking) to see Ed being forced to watch Stede make the same mistakes and go through the same process that he did, knowing that Ed now hates the person he became during that experience. It's really deep and touching, while still maintaining the comedic aspect of it.

Also, I will never shut up about Izzy's character development, it's absolutely beautiful. I love seeing the way he's grown and similar to Ed, the way he's now being forced to watch Stede go through the same thing.

And of course, the metaphors and symbolism will never fail to break me, they're always so incredible.

Rollercoaster of an episode
CrazyMRFan12 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
2x07 of Our Flag Means Death is an emotional rollercoaster of highs and lows. It's wonderful to see Stede and Ed in their initial bliss mode after consummating their relationship, going on a brunch date in the Republic of Pirates and having a good time. These are always the best moments of the show, when Rhys and Taika get to just be silly together. When things take a shift for the uneasy after Stede's newfound pirate infamy clashes with Ed's burgeoning wishes to retire from the pirate life, we see them heartbreakingly at odds and it's a bold step for the show to make, so soon after finally getting them back together. I think this is where the show could easily use a longer runtime to expand on these kinds of developments. All the same, you're left wondering if love is enough to get them back on the same page again and wanting to see it played out in the next episode!

There are a lot of great crew moments once again as Frenchie, in true Frenchie fashion, comes up with a side hustle to capitalize on Stede's new fame. It's always wonderful to see how well the crew works together when a new idea comes to fruition, everyone always up for whatever hijinks they get themselves into at a given time. As a crew!

The episode culminates in an unexpected showdown with an even more unexpected result that leaves you itching for the finale episode as soon as possible!

Penultimate episode
suzanne-karrschmidt24 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Second to last episode of a season that should have had twelve or more. While the morning after starts off well with Ed bringing Stede breakfast in bed and confiding in him, he has thrown away his leathers in his hopes to stop pirating. Meanwhile, word has gotten out about Stede's recent kill, so his popularity is increasing. Ed gives him some pointers, but gets a job as a fisherman, arguing that their first time together had been a mistake. Stede lashes out in response and is nearly killed by Zheng when he tries to duel her to avoid losing any more men. Prince Ricky's schemes change the game entirely at the end of the episode...

Fishermen and Pirates are Nothing Alike
shaugen-3520515 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The episode begins with Stede and Ed enjoying the morning after. Ed throws out his leathers and brings Stede breakfast in bed. Ed expresses his feelings about how Stede saved his life by coming to him as a sparkly orange Merman. Once docked at the Republic of Pirates, the guys eat at a fish shack together and it becomes apparent that Stede has a new reputation since he offed Ned Low. Ed enjoys seeing Stede as the hero and they head off to Spanish Jackies to meet Stede's newfound fan base. Ed gives Stede advice about handling the new popularity and Stede begins his night of celebrity. Ed is obviously pulling away from piracy and is even more set on leaving the life just as Stede is blowing up in pirate notoriety. They seem to be on different pages and Ed goes off to contemplate his future. When Stede finally finds him, they end up having an argument and Ed storms off to become a fisherman instead of a pirate. Stede goes back to Spanish Jackie's where he ends up in a fight with Zheng where she comes close to destroying him. The episode has a shocking ending when the British blow up all the ships in the bay due to Minor Prince Ricky sending large clocks to all of Zheng's ships. The ending leads viewers going into the season finale knowing that ships have been destroyed, Ed and Stede are apart again, and the British have taken over the Republic of Pirates. Is season 2 going to end with another cliffhanger where Ed and Stede are star-crossed? The show continues to charm us and keeps us on the edge of our seats.

Emotional, witty, and sweet

Warning: Spoilers
Another great one. Watching Taika act is truly like watching a masterclass. His eyes brilliantly convey the subtext, and the emotional journey that must occur for Ed before he can have that happy ending with Stede. The cliffhanger, even though you could see it coming, was still heart wrenching and well written. Stede's newfound fame is unexpected and hilarious. Love how Frenchie starts a side hustle to capitalize on it, similar to season 1 with the rich French people. Funny, creative quirk of his. Overall terrific storytelling in this episode, and in this season as a whole. Job well done.

Episode 207
bobcobb3015 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I had been complaining about the underwhelming fight scenes and violence on this show but we finally got a somewhat entertaining one thanks to the continued greatness of Rhys Darby in his role as Stede on the show. Overmatched by his female adversary and yet he kept trying to provoke her and responded with cheesy 80's style one liners amidst his struggles in the hand to hand and sword to sword combat realm.

This was a step up and got me excited for the next episode and the season, potential series, finale, but overall this show will go down as one with such untapped potential that it could not reach.
