Toronto, April 19 (Ians) Nearly 3-5 per cent cases of onset of diabetes is due to Covid-19, in other words roughly one person in 20 is a diabetic, according to an alarming study.
The study, led by a team of researchers at the University of British Columbia, found that Sars-CoV-2 infection was associated with a higher risk of diabetes, suggesting that these infections may have contributed to an excess burden of diabetes at the population level.
“These findings suggest that Covid-19 infection may continue to be associated with outcomes in organ systems involved in regulating blood glucose in the postacute phase,” said Prof Naveed Janjua, from the varsity.
The findings, published in Jama Network Open, showed that men were more likely to develop diabetes than women.
People who suffered severe Covid and were hospitalised were more than twice as likely to go on to a diabetes diagnosis, compared with those who were not infected.

As the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival reaches the quarter-century mark this year, the festival’s industry arm, Agora, will host a range of events and initiatives looking to bolster documentary production and distribution in both the host country and the wider region.
Headlining the industry program is the Agora’s co-production and co-financing forum, which takes place March 6 and will present 14 projects in development by documentary filmmakers from Southeastern Europe, the Middle East and the Black Sea region. Another highlight, Agora Docs in Progress, showcases 11 films nearing completion and ready to hit the festival circuit this year.
The success of those two programs is evident in the selection at this year’s festival: Fifteen documentaries that have been supported in previous editions of the Agora will celebrate world, international or European premieres in the competition sections or Open Horizons section, including Agora Docs in Progress alumni “Narrow Path to Happiness” (pictured), by Kata Oláh,...

Any professional actor or stage manager is eligible to join the Actors’ Equity Association for the foreseeable future.
The union announced Wednesday that it is making permanent its Open Access policy, which was first introduced in July 2021. The policy opens up membership in the union to any actor or stage manager who can demonstrate proof of work and payment through methods such as a Playbill and a paystub, or a website link and a tax document. The policy had been set to expire in May 2023.
Before the policy was introduced, members either had to be hired for an Equity production, thereby gaining union membership, be a member of a sibling union or take part in the Equity Membership Candidate Program, in which actors and stage managers could gain points toward full membership by working on eligible productions.

Actors’ Equity said today that it’s making its Open Access membership policy permanent, allowing any non-union theater worker to join who can demonstrate that they have worked professionally as an actor or stage manager within Equity’s geographical jurisdiction. The 51,000-member union had launched the Open Access policy in July of 2021, but it had a sunset date of May 1, 2023.
The union will now begin a three-year phase-out of its Equity Membership Candidate (Emc) Program, under which eligibility for union membership had been limited to those working for an Equity employer or to members of a sibling union such as SAG-AFTRA, the American Guild of Musical Artists (Agma) or the American Guild of Variety Artists (Agva).
“Open Access is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do,” said Actors’ Equity President Kate Shindle. “Of course, strength in numbers is a cornerstone principle for any union. But this was never a simple numbers game.

The holiday season is in full swing, with Christmas falling this Sunday and a few new releases in store for the busy end-of-the-year movie-going rush. This weekend will likely be a notch smaller than last year’s $144 million Christmas-weekend haul, and like last year the three-day numbers will be depressed by having the soft movie-going day of Christmas Eve fall over the weekend. Still, Avatar: The Way of Water should lead a relatively strong finish to the year (remember the overall box office was a brutally low $57.6 million just two weekends ago).
While the newcomers Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Babylon, and Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody all have potential, as does the expansion of The Whale, Avatar: The Way of Water remains the major box office story of this weekend and many weekends to come. James Cameron’s expensive sci-fi epic certainly needs strong holds after...

Now in its eighth year, the American Film Festival offers a unique perspective on recent developments in U.S. indie filmmaking. That’s because it happens in Poland, staged at the stylish Kino Nowe Horyzonty film center in Wroclaw, also home to the summer New Horizons festival, which has more of a European tilt.
Although the festival, which recently concluded, surveys many favorites from Sundance and South by Southwest, the curation doesn’t merely transpose selections to a new setting. It imports a lively assortment of filmmakers, as well, and creates a cozy, engaged atmosphere more akin to the communal vibe of the Maryland Film Festival. Indeed, to rub shoulders in a crowd that included Jody Lee Lipes, Noel Wells, Dustin Guy Defa, Nathan Silver, producer Mike Ryan, Jessica Oreck and Mike Ott is to experience a deep dive into the creative bustle of current indie ferment.

Somehow, Ryan Murphy’s ultra-sexy drama series is not getting made at HBO — despite starring Anna Torv, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jaimie Alexander, Michelle Monaghan, Scott Speedman and Wes Bentley.
HBO has shut the door on Open, the Glee and American Horror Story co-creator’s risque take on modern romance that was described as “a multicharacter exploration of the complex, ever evolving landscape of sexuality, monogamy and intimacy in relationships.”
The premium network’s programming president Michael Lombardo said in a statement: “After such a triumphant collaboration with The Normal Heart, everyone felt that Open was not the right next step for all involved.

To mark the release of Pioneer on 4th August, we’ve been given 4 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
Set in the early 1980s at the beginning of the Norwegian oil boom, Pioneer sees the authorities racing to harness gas and oil deposits in the North Sea by laying a pipeline at a depth of more than 500 metres. Petter (Aksel Hennie – Headhunters) is obsessed with reaching the bottom of the Norwegian Sea and has the discipline and strength to take on the mission. But when a tragic accident changes everything, Petter embarks on a dangerous journey with no idea who is pulling the strings – until his very life is at stake.
With support from Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, American Beauty) and Stephen Lang (Avatar, Public Enemies), Hennie delivers a powerhouse performance in what is surely one of the most brilliantly realised deep sea thrillers ever seen.

One thing that makes television so great (and different from film) is the luxury of multiple years and seasons to explore different moments and experiences in a character’s life as they naturally progress. Because of that, TV shows frequently evolve drastically from their tidy season 1 concepts, which can make their original titles a bit confusing.
With some minor spoilers ahead, here are six TV shows that might have benefited from a name change during their runs:

Exclusive: Scott Speedman is set to star opposite Patricia Clarkson in October Gale, the drama written and directed by Ruba Nadda. She also wrote and directed Cairo Time, which starred Clarkson. Speedman plays a mysterious man who, during a violent October storm, washes up on the shore of Helen Matthews’ remote island cottage, unconscious and bleeding from a gunshot wound. Clarkson plays the recently widowed doctor who takes him in, only to find that the shooter is coming back to finish the job and that the storm has cut them off from the mainland. Daniel Iron will produce through Foundry Films, and Christine Vachon will be exec producer through Killer Films. The film shoots in Canada in five weeks. This comes as the Atom Egoyan-directed The Captive – a film Speedman stars in with Ryan Reynolds, Rosario Dawson and Mireielle Enos — was selected as a Competition title at Cannes next month.

Scott Speedman's new show Open is all about relationships, so it seemed only fitting that he dished about his own dating history during an appearance on Chelsea Lately. Chelsea Handler began by telling the 38-year-old Canadian that she used to wait tables at a restaurant in the Palisades and she would see him with his Felicity co-star Keri Russell. "That's when I was dating Keri, yeah. She lived out there," the actor recalled. "Oh yeah, I didn't know you guys dated," Handler said. "Why did you think we were at breakfast every morning?" Speedman asked. "Well listen, I said, 'oh he used to come here with Keri, they dated,'" Handler added....

It’s a good day to be Aisha Tyler, current host of the resurrected Whose Line Is It Anyway and the voice of the always popular and sassy Lana on FX’s Archer.
