Playtime has had a busy EFM, where it’s locked a raft of major deals on “The Devil’s Bath,” a period psychological thriller in competition at the Berlin Film Festival.
“The Devil’s Bath” is directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the Austrian filmmaking duo behind “Goodnight Mommy.”
Set in rural Austria in 1750, “The Devil’s Bath” stars Anja Plaschg, the up-and-coming singer and composer known as Soap & Skin. Plaschg plays Agnes, a young married woman who feels oppressed in her husband’s world, which is devoid of emotions and limited to chores and expectations. A pious and highly sensitive woman, Agnes falls into a deep depression, before committing a shocking act of violence that she sees as the only way out of her inner prison.
“The Devil’s Bath” has been bought by Klockworx (Japan), Cine Canibal (Latin America), Russian World Vision (Cis excluding Ukraine), September Films (Benelux), Movies Inspired (Italy...

A star, or several, are born, perhaps. Playing early as part of Locarno’s Open Doors Screenings, framing new features and shorts from Latin America and the Caribbean, “Rimana Wasi: Home of Stories” received a rapturous reception, establishing directors Ximena Málaga Sabogal, Piotr Turlej as talents to track.
“Angelo,” and “La Distancia Del Tiempo” have good word of mouth; there’s a large expectation to see the milestone queer doc “Eating Papaw on the Seashore.”
Briefly, a drill down on the shorts screening at Open Doors, a new and welcome addition to Locarno’s premier industry forum:
“Angelo” Alex Plumb, Bolivia
Solitary shoe shiner Angelo spends his days fending off monotony and the despair of life on the streets by cruising through realities. The film paints a delicate portrait of life outside all bounds, capturing the bold colors of the city in contrast to the grit of its avenues and mountain ranges.

This September, Naomi Watts stars in director Matt Sobel’s thriller Goodnight Mommy. The film will be available globally via Prime Video on September 16, 2022.
When twin brothers (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti) arrive at their mother’s (Naomi Watts) country home to discover her face covered in bandages—the result, she explains, of recent cosmetic surgery—they immediately sense that something doesn’t add up. She sets strange new house rules, smokes in her bathroom, and secretly rips up a drawing they gave her—things their loving mother would never do. As her behavior grows increasingly bizarre and erratic, a horrifying thought takes root in the boys’ minds: The sinking suspicion that the woman beneath the gauze, who’s making their food and sleeping in the next room, isn’t their mother at all.

Coming to Prime Video on September 16 is Goodnight Mommy.
Twin brothers (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti) arrive at their Mother’s country home (Naomi Watts) to discover her face covered in surgical bandages. Immediately something is off. Their Mother smokes, sets strict rules, refuses to sing their favorite bedtime song, and secretly rips up a drawing Elias gives her — things their previously warm, caring mom would never do. They begin to suspect the woman is not their mother at all, but even after she turns violent, the police don’t believe the children are in danger. Becoming increasingly suspicious, the boys try to uncover who they are really living with, in this suspenseful, psychological thriller.
Goodnight Mommy is directed by Matt Sobel from a screenplay by Kyle Warren, based on the 2014 film Goodnight Mommy (written and directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, produced by Ulrich Seidl).

My primal reaction when watching Goodnight Mommy was extreme unease and discomfort. Directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the mysterious thriller left me feeling emotionally drained after its screening at Fantastic Fest in September 2014. My fellow writer Pierce Conran was in much better shape to write about it, which he did with his superb elegance. So it is with mixed emotions that I report on a remake that is coming out next month. On the plus side: Naomi Watts. She is excellent in just about everything she has done, and is a big bonus in a remake, such as The Ring or King Kong or Funny Games. In the original Goodnight Mommy, her character was the one who was placed in danger by...

Here we go again, but not in the way you might be expecting. The 2014 horror hit "Goodnight Mommy," is getting an American reboot and we now have the film's first trailer.
The sneak peek for the Prime Video original showcases Naomi Watts in the title matriarchal role. Much like the first film, the movie follows a mother reuniting with her twin sons following a cosmetic surgery that requires her to wear bandages around her entire face and head. Slowly, the boys start to suspect their mother, well, isn't who she says she is, and they join forces to unmask her and find out the truth.
The remake stars Watts alongside Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti, while "Younger" star Peter Hermann rounds out the cast of the film. "Take Me to the River" director Matt Sobel helmed the film from a script by Kyle Warren, who is known for his work on Fox's short-lived "Lethal Weapon" series.

"Don't you think something's different…?" "I don't think that's our mother…" Amazon has revealed the first official trailer for the US remake of the chilling Austrian horror thriller Goodnight Mommy, which will be streaming on Prime Video this September. After undergoing cosmetic facial surgery, a woman returns home to her isolated house in the woods. When her identical twin sons arrive at her remote home they begin to suspect that something isn't right. This is a fresh English-language remake of an acclaimed film from 2014 originally titled Ich Seh, Ich Seh (and released as Goodnight Mommy in the US) that is a very dark, super messed up horror. This new one seems to channel the spirit of the original with a few different twists and turns. Naomi Watts stars with Cameron Crovetti & Nicholas Crovetti as the two twins, plus Peter Hermann and Jeremy Bobb. It's a bit unfortunate they're sending this...

As her behavior becomes even more weird and frightening, the two boys begin to question whether the woman beneath the gauze is even their mother at all. The original film was directed...

Naomi Watts stars as an unsettling mother whose face is wrapped in bandages in the official trailer for Matt Sobel’s “Goodnight Mommy.”
A remake of the 2014 Austrian film of the same name, the horror movie follows two twin brothers, played by real-life twins Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti, who visit their mother after her recent reconstructive surgery. However, it quickly becomes clear something isn’t right with her.
Additional cast members for “Goodnight Mommy” include Jeremy Bobb, Crystal Lucas-Perry and Peter Hermann.
Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala wrote and directed the original 2014 film, which followed the same plot and was the Austrian entry for best foreign language film at the 88th Academy Awards but ultimately wasn’t nominated. Naomi Watts certainly has a predilection for leading English-language remakes of Austrian psychological horror hits. After starring in Michael Haneke’s remake of his own Funny Games, the actress is now taking part in Matt Sobel’s Goodnight Mommy, a retelling of Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s 2014 horror feature. Ahead of a September 16 release on Prime Video, the first trailer has now arrived.

Who is the woman behind those bandages? Twin brothers confront a frightening possibility in “Goodnight Mommy.” The thriller, set in a remote country house, revolves around brothers challenging the only adult in their lives. What results is a disturbing thriller that keeps viewers guessing until the last reveal. If the premise seems eerily familiar, there’s a good reason. “Goodnight Mommy” is a remake of Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s acclaimed 2014 film, a film we described as “unnerving [and] elegantly ratcheting [its] creepiness.” We also put it on our list of The Best Horror Movies Of The Decade [the 2010s].

Twenty years since “The Ring” and Naomi Watts is still terrifying audiences.
Austrian hit 2014 film “Goodnight Mommy” is reimagined for Amazon Prime Video, with Watts taking over the lead role as a bandaged mother who appears to have undergone facial cosmetic surgery. However, once she returns home to her twin sons (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti), they realize something is very, very wrong. Is this really their mother, or an imposter?
Peter Hermann also stars in the film, with Matt Sobel (2015 Sundance sleeper “Take Me to the River”) directing from a script by Kyle Warren (“Lethal Weapon” series). “Goodnight Mommy” premieres September 16 on Prime Video.

After the 2000s seemingly kickstarted a new wave of independent horror, the 2010s (and beyond) were an exceptional time for new and emerging, as well as established, filmmakers to leave their own mark on the landscape of genre storytelling. One of the most notable aspects, or even trends, that I noticed while doing research for this entire series of retrospectives is how out of all of the decades, it feels like the 2010s was one of the best times for female filmmakers to get the opportunity to take the helm in comparison to other decades. The 1980s had a handful of women directors working in independent horror, but during both the ’90s and ’00s, it felt like the industry as a whole had taken a few steps backwards in providing female filmmakers the opportunity to tell the stories they wanted to tell.

What would you do for a habanero-orange compact sport utility vehicle? Blowing as many balloons as possible in one minute seems like an easy enough task, but what about fetching a human earlobe? These are the questions at the heart of “Stanleyville,” or at least they seem to be. In reality, director Maxwell McCabe-Lokos’ debut feature uses the bizarre “platinum-level exclusive contest” at its center as a metaphor for self-actualization — even if achieving it requires more than a little self-destruction along the way. With a firm commitment to its alluringly offbeat premise and a grounding lead performance from Susanne Wuest, this indie oddity is an enjoyable descent into the absurd despite an apparent lack of interest in answering most of the questions it raises.

They’re set to star alongside previously announced cast members including Bill Skarsgård, Yayan Ruhian, Jessica Rothe, Andrew Koji and Isaiah Mustafa.
Based on an original idea by German filmmaker Moritz Mohr, who here makes his feature directorial debut, Boy Kills World is billed as a one-of-a-kind action spectacle set in a dystopian fever dream reality. It centers on Boy (Skarsgård), a deaf mute with a vibrant imagination. When his family is murdered, Boy escapes to the jungle and is trained by a mysterious shaman (Ruhian) to repress his childish imagination and become an instrument of death. Peter Greene, Ayomide Adegun and Jeremy Bobb are set as leads opposite Colin Woodell and Mel Gibson in Starz’s The Continental, the prequel to the Keanu Reeves film series John Wick. The Continental will be presented as a three-night special-event TV series, produced for Starz by Lionsgate Television.
The Continental will explore the origin behind the hotel-for-assassins, which increasingly has become the centerpiece of the John Wick universe. This will be accomplished through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott (Woodell), who is dragged into the Hell-scape of a 1975 New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind. We at ScreenAnarchy are suckers for a good poster, and certainly the poster for Stanleyville certainly fits that bill. The feature directorial debut of Canadian actor Maxwell McCabe-Lokos has its world premiere at Fantasia this weekend, and this intriguing poster, designed by Aleksander Walijewski, just dropped. Prim and proper Maria Barbizan (Susanne Wuest of Goodnight Mommy) unceremoniously walks away from her boring job, her inept husband, and her obnoxious daughter. Moments later, she is swept up in a bizarre contest alongside a handful of idiosyncratic characters, all competing for the chance to win true enlightenment… and one slightly used habanero-orange compact sport utility vehicle. My thoughts first turn to the use of the bubble in comics as dialogue placement, then to the symbolism of balloons,...

Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired U.S. rights to “Stanleyville,” starring “Goodnight Mommy’s” Susanne Wuest, ahead of the film’s world premiere at this month’s Fantasia Film Festival.
One of the high-profile Fantasia deal announcements, the pick-up, brokered with Yellow Veil Pictures, will see Oscilloscope open “Stanleyville” in U.S. theaters this Winter.
“Stanleyville” marks the feature film debut of Canadian actor-turned-director Maxwell McCabe-Lokos, who has appeared in a slew of movies and TV series, including “Antibirth,” “Lars and the Real Girl,” “The Incredible Hulk” and “Tin Star.”
Directed by Bruce McDonald, McCabe-Lokos’ first feature screenplay, “The Husband,” which he starred in, premiered at Toronto 2013. His directorial debut, 2016 short “Ape Sodom,” and 2017 short “Midnight Confession” were also both selected for Toronto.

Naomi Watts’ update on the cult horror film “Goodnight Mommy” just secured two crucial roles in Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti.
The twin boys will play Watts’ sons in the Amazon Studios project, which just kicked off production in New Jersey. Matt Sobel is directing the new take on the film, whose predecessor was selected as Austria’s entry for best international film at the 2015 Oscars.
The story follows two brothers who arrive at their mother’s country home to discover her face covered in bandages, what she says is the result of a recent cosmetic surgery. As her behavior grows increasingly erratic, a horrifying question takes root in the boys’ minds: what if the woman beneath the gauze isn’t their mother at all?
Sobel is directing from a script by Kyle Warren. Joshua Astrachan, David Kaplan, Nicolas Brigaud-Robert and Valery Guibal are producing. Watts, Sobel, Warren and the directors of the original film,...

Exclusive: Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale are set as the leads in The Watcher, a Netflix limited series from Ryan Murphy and his frequent collaborator Ian Brennan.
No one would comment, but I hear The Watcher follows a married couple whose move into their dream home is being threatened by terrifying letters from a stalker, signed “The Watcher.”
This marks a reunion for Watts and Cannavale, who star together in the upcoming movie Once Upon a Time in Staten Island.
Executive producing with Murphy and Brennan are Eric Newman (Narcos), Bryan Unkeless as well as Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Catfish). Filming is set to begin in the fall.
The series, which evokes the first season of Murphy’s hit American Horror Story, is inspired by the infamous “Watcher” house in New Jersey. A couple bought the 1905 Dutch colonial revival in 2014 for nearly $1.4 million. They were forced to...

Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.
The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. Sounds kinda fun! It’s no wonder that M.O.D.O.K. is the last Hulu Marvel show standing.
In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...

It looks like Naomi Watts has covered the niche of English-language remakes of psychologically intense Austrian thrillers. After leading Michael Haneke’s own remake of his film Funny Games, the actress is now set to take on a new take on Goodnight Mommy.
Released in 2014, Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s original film concerns the journey of twin boys with their mother after she had facial reconstructive surgery. With a major twist best left unspoiled, the film was Austrian’s Oscar entry and since then the directing duo went on to helm The Lodge with Riley Keough.
Variety reports that Matt Sobel (Take Me To The River) will direct the remake, set up at Amazon Studios, from a script by Kyle Warren while Franz and Fiala are on board as executive producers. Watch the trailer for the original film below.

The minefield of early adolescence is a treacherous phase in Spanish visual artist Pascual Sisto’s John and the Hole, in which Charlie Shotwell gives a rivetingly affectless performance as an apathetic 13-year-old who holds his parents and sister captive in an underground bunker. Every once in a while, someone likes to declare that the horror genre is dead, and so far, every one of those predictions has been wrong.
Horror movies have been around almost as long as filmmaking itself, and while the genre has always been cyclical in nature –dipping, sometimes drastically, in both quality and quantity from time to time — all it usually takes is a well-timed box office hit, a fresh new angle or a hot young filmmaker to reanimate it again.
The 21st century has been, overall, an extremely healthy one for horror. There’s been the usual amount of dross, of course, but the genre has branched out in a number of interesting new directions as well. We had absolutely no problem tallying the initial batch of movies for this article, and have just continued to update it ever since, starting with the newest and going back in time from there.

In a fraught years for film festivals, some good news: the Venice Film Festival, one of the world’s starriest annual film events — and one that has previously resisted pressure to program more female filmmakers — has nearly reached gender parity with its competition lineup. This year’s festival will host eight films directed by women in its highest-profile section, where they will compete for the Golden Lion. Only four women have won the prize since the festival started in 1932, with Sofia Coppola as the most recent winner for “Somewhere” in 2010. The other past winners were Mira Nair, Margarethe von Trotta, and Agnès Varda.
The 2020 festival will play home to new films from a variety of the industry’s top female directors, including Chloe Zhao, Mona Fastvold (“The World to Come”), Emma Dante (“Le Sorelle Macaluso”), Nicole Garcia (“Lovers”), Susanna Nicchiarelli (“Miss Marx”), Malgorzata Szumowska (“Never Gonna Snow Again”), Julia Von Heinz...

Beanpole (Kantemir Balagov)
The horrors of war are often told through male-centric narratives. Heroes who go through hell on the battlefield, brothers who sacrifice everything for each other, soldiers who return home scarred for life etc., all of which we’ve seen put on the big screen time and again. But wars are of course collective nightmares, tears in the fabric of history that leave no one–men, women, children–unscathed. This is the premise of Russian writer–director Kantemir Balagov’s second feature Beanpole, a radical relationship drama that examines the trauma of war from a distinctly female perspective. – Zhuo-Ning Su (full review)

Heroes who go through hell on the battlefield, brothers who sacrifice everything for each other, soldiers who return home scarred for life etc., all of which we’ve seen put on the big screen time and again. May’s home media releases are off to a great start, as genre fans have a lot to get excited for this week. Two of the best genre films of the year are heading to both Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday: Osgood Perkins’ Gretel & Hansel and The Lodge from Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala. Tigers Are Not Afraid (which was one of my favorite films of 2019) is getting the Steelbook treatment this week, and if you weren’t able to catch it in theaters, Bloodshot hits various formats as well.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for May 5th include Exorcism at 60,000 Feet, The House In Between, Cry Havoc, Insecticidal, and Becoming.
