Director Can Evrenol won Best New Director here at Fantastic Fest 2015 last night. It's an honor well deserved. With his debut feature Baskin he's juggling potential tonal problems that could give any filmmaker serious headaches. What emerges, from his steady guidance, is a masterpiece of Lovecraftian dread that plays like Once Upon A Time in Anatolia meets Hellraiser. IFC has purchased the film so those who missed it can still have hope of checking it out stateside. But even those who have seen it will probably get together with friends to watch again. ...

When I say Baskin is Turkish filmmaker Can Evrenol’s answer to Rob Zombie, I mean that as a compliment. Zombie has a very unique style that fuses splatterhouse gore and independent artistry, and Evrenol achieves that same enlightened balance throughout his first feature film. As Shudder’s Sam Zimmerman repeated numerous times in his Fantastic Fest introduction, Baskin leads you straight into the horrific depths of Turkish Hell, but once the Zombie-isms take over, you realize Evrenol’s film is less slasher extravaganza, and more biblical terrorizer. This is certainly a new page in the history book of Turkish horror, and if you’ve seen Remake, Remix, Rip-Off (Which You Should), that’s an important step in the right direction – but is it enough?

When many people think of contemporary Turkish cinema, the first thing that comes to mind is the Palme d'Or-bait that is the films of Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Methodical (ahem, slow) dramas like Once Upon a Time in Anatolia and Winter's Sleep evoke feelings of contemplation. There is an existential artistry at play that whispers to the audience with a deeply subtle grace. Baskin is totally different. In his debut feature, Turkish director Can Evrenol grabs subtlety by the throat -- and once his fingernails are in, proceeds to kick it in the balls. Baskin is a weird and wonderful and very bloody. Prepare for a whole new vision of Turkish cinema. Generally speaking, Baskin is the story of a not-so-elite squad of relatively rural policemen....

It is time for me to make my peace with the fact that I will not be at Fantastic Fest this year. Last year's fest was one of my favorites ever, fitting for a tenth anniversary, and I would love to go this year. It's just not in the cards, though. It guts me, too. The event continues to grow and change and evolve, and it features one of the greatest programming teams in the business right now. There are films playing at the festival that I'll see in Toronto, and I'm sure I'll catch up with others, but that's not the point. Fantastic Fest is an experience, and an amazing one. If you want to go, you still can. "Daytime Only Badges, Fan Badges, and 2Nd Half Badges for Fantastic Fest 2015 are available for purchase here," today's press release urged. If you can go for the second half, you'll...

Turkish helmer Can Evrenol feels very much like one of our own here at Twitch. We've been covering his work since back in 2009 when he first came to our attention with his sophomore short film The Chest, and we've kept a close eye on him ever since. Evrenol's work has a primal intensity to it, something deeply visceral and unsettling, and it's about to be exposed to the world at large with his debut feature film Baskin - an expansion of his recent short of the same name - about to premiere in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival. What should be a routine night on patrol becomes a trip into the darkness of the mind and soul for a squad...

One of the greatest genre film festivals in the world (some say the best) has just announced its second wave of titles, including a few titles so anticipated you’ll wish you’re in Austin next month. Below are 35 more films to add to the 23 already announced in the first wave. They include Ridley Scott’s The Martian, Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster, Ben Wheatley’s adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s High-Rise and Jeremy Saulnier’s follow up to Blue Ruin, The Green Room. In addition to the films, Fantastic Fest is also delivering something special this year with a performance from Itchy-o – “a blazing, 32-member aural assault from the darkest depths of Colorado.” Fantastic Fest will also host the World Premiere of Lazer Team, the first feature film from web series gods Rooster Teeth. “This is a big year for genre cinema. It’s hard to believe that we are a month away from what is possibly the best genre film festival in North America! After announcing a Kurt Russell included first wave, we get a wave that probably includes all the films I have the most interest in. The French remake of what I consider is one of Mario Bava’s best films, Rabid Dogs is included. Along with Jeremy Saulnier’s follow up from Blue Ruin, Green Room where Patrick Stewart plays a Neo-Nazi club owner, Ridley Scott’s The Martian, Ben Wheatley’s adaptation of High-Rise and the horror film that has some chilling buzz, The Witch, are all included. Check out the full listing below and wait with anticipation for our coverage of the festival!
Fantastic Fest is excited to announce the second wave of programming featuring the Us Premiere of Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster as the opening night film.

Late last month, I posted the trailer for Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala's upcoming horror film "Goodnight Mommy" and called it "the scariest trailer I've seen in a long time." I wasn't kidding! After my post went up, multiple other outlets proceeded to call it the scariest trailer of All time, which I found a tad hyperbolic. Nevertheless! The Austrian scare flick may have just received a competitor for scariest trailer of 2015 from a twisted little Turkish film entitled "Baskin," which is set to premiere in the Midnight Madness section at this year's Toronto International Film Festival. The plot? "A squad of unsuspecting cops goes through a trapdoor to Hell when they stumble upon a Black Mass in an abandoned building." Which sounds like the storyline to a cheesy, borderline incoherent Lucio Fulci movie! Except "Baskin" appears to be less "The Beyond" and more "Hellraiser" (only even more perverse...

If scary movies are your thing, you'd best prepare yourself because the trailer for Baskin suggests the year's scariest movie is coming soon.
Co-written and directed by Can Evrenol, Baskin is the story of five cops who are called as back-up to an abandoned building. Thing is, there was never a back-up call. They were summoned to the building which also happens to be a gateway to Hell and good god, does it ever look terrifying.
This is not Evrenol's first go at horror and he has a back catalogue of shorts which is down right scary. It's not even his first go at this story. Baskin is an expansion of his short film of the same name which made the festival rounds a couple of years ago.

While the Toronto International Film Festival has mostly garnered a reputation as a place to often get the first look at movies that go on to critical acclaim and Academy Awards, the festival’s Midnight Madness section, which is reserved for genre films, has built a following of its own as well, getting a more prominent showcase as the years have passed. This has, in turn, led to films such as Adam Wingard’s You’re Next and Gareth Evans’ The Raid to make their world premieres at the festival under this banner, making the lineup every year an announcement that genre fans anticipate. Director Can Evrenol and his crew are buckling down for four weeks of night shoots. And as you can see from the image to the left there this will be a very deadly affair. Baskin revolves around four cops responding to a routine call and discover a Lovecraftian cult whose quarters hide the very horrors that should only belong in Hell!We are stoked about this horror flick. If you are unfamiliar with the project you can watch the trailer for the original short film below to get a feel for what is coming! (Todd Brown is...

Welcome to the third installment of my ongoing series of articles that collects great horror short films.
If you have not already done so, please check out the first two installments of this series “Watch 15 Great Horror Short Films” and its follow-up “Watch 13 More Great Horror Short Films” not only because you’ll love them but also because films and filmmakers mentioned in those articles are referenced in this one.
Short form horror aficionados will also want to check out a recent article I wrote called “The Greatest Horror Anthology Film Segments of All Time”.
As you readers know, the horror short film is an artistic endeavor that can serve as a film industry calling card. A perfect example of this is the recent announcement of the feature film version of Can Evrenol’s superb horror short Baskin.
Combine successes like that with the very strong film festival presence of...

Turkish films over the years have been known to be of... shall we say... questionable quality? I'm looking at you, Turkish Exorcist, Turkish Star Wars, Turkish Jaws, and Turkish Rambo! That can't last forever though, can it? It's looking like the Turks have finally gotten their cinematic shit together.
Variety is reporting out of Cannes that Barcelona genre producer M's Entertainment (Asmodexia) has set its second feature, the low-budget Baskin.
Baskin’s plot revolves around four cops responding to a routine call who discover a Lovecraftian cult whose quarters hide the very horrors that should only belong in Hell.
The film is costing under $500,000 is and fully financed by M's Entertainment via private equity. By targeting theatrical but also robust VOD play, M's Entertainment is breaking in a new production/distribution/promotion model for genre movies in Spain. Turkish helmer Can Evrenol will direct from his own screenplay based on his 2013 short.

Following up on my previous article, “Watch 15 Great Horror Short Films,” which received a very positive response, I’ve researched and collected 13 more superb horror short films. As with the first article, I limited the choices to stand-alone live-action horror short films not produced for an anthology film and the selections were narrowed down by availability.
In further keeping with the criteria of the first article, animated horror short films and horror-comedy short films were excluded from consideration as both of these categories would make good subjects for their own individual articles. Sorry, Brutal Relax and Fist of Jesus fans.
It should also be noted that a number of highly regarded horror shorts readers might clamor to see in an article like this such as Ryan Haysom’s Yellow continue their long festival runs and have not been posted for online viewing and were therefore not considered for this piece.
