Here's our pick of the most terrifying sea monsters, snakes and, er, sheep...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Animals have been our companions for millennia, but what happens when nature… goes bad? Some of cinema’s scariest moments come from creatures who have become freakishly intelligent, aggressive, or large, normally as a result of human experimentation. Other times, it’s simply that our reckless disregard for the natural order means a clash between man and beast; a fair fight only if we have guns, fireballs, and industrial-strength pesticides.
While the likes of Jaws and Arachnophobia create hauntingly iconic scenes that spring to mind at inopportune moments in your life, glorious counterparts to these classics are to be found in the cinematic bargain bin. Sometimes a straight-up thriller becomes a B-movie simply with the passage of time, as the animatronic monster becomes less terrifying and more ludicrous.

You can now learn how studioADI's practical effects in Harbinger Down (starring Lance Henriksen) were lovingly created in Christopher Cooksey's new book about the making of the 2015 horror film. Also in today's Horror Highlights: Blu-ray and DVD release details for Down a Dark Hall, co-starring Uma Thurman, and the impressive lineup of guests at this year's New Jersey Horror Con and Film Festival.

When practical effects drive a film’s talking points, I pause. Gruesome monster designs and caved-in prosthetics merely supplement story, yet a film like Harbinger Down piles all its eggs into one blood-soaked basket. Fans yearn for realistic SFX, and filmmakers always aim to dethrone The Thing‘s bar-setting kingship. But at what cost? Take Astron-6’s The Void. Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski create Lovecraftian hellbeasts from synthetic molding, yet a cultist presence could have used more fleshing out. Bodies splatter, character structures crumble and visuals outweigh storytelling.

If you’re a horror movie fan, then there’s a fun-looking indie family horror film that might be worth checking out called Kids vs. Monsters. You can tell from the trailer that this is a low budget film, but it’s fueled by some horror movie all-star actors, some wacky fun practical effects, and most importantly, horror movie fandom. Here’s the brief plot description:
The six richest people in the world each have one thing still dragging them down — their intolerable kids. Luckily, there is a mysterious entity that is happy to lend a hand.
The movie stars Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange, Time After Time), Lance Henriksen (Aliens, Pumpkinhead), Sultan Saeed Al Darmaki (Harbinger Down), Keith David (The Thing, They Live), Richard Moll (House, Evilspeak, Night Court), and Armand Assante (Judge Dredd, I The Jury) just to name a few.

Ultimately what holds Harbinger Down back is a lack of ingenuity. There are missed opportunities here and it appears that Gillis is so determined to honor the flicks that inspired him that he forgot it was okay to step out on a limb and inject some clever new material. Thats a shame really because Harbinger Down could have easily elevated itself from a funbutnotgreat indie feature to a special inspired picture that genre followers will remember for years to come. Chances are despite the fact that it is a fun pic this one will be forgotten within a few years. Its worth a watch but its not a mandatory own thats for sure.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Vertical Entertainment. Director/writer: Alec Gillis. Cast: Lance Henriksen, Camille Balsamo, Matt Winston, Giovonnie Samuels and Winston James Francis. Harbinger Down was created by an experienced special effects crew. The director, Alec Gillis, has been associated with many sci-fi and horror films. As well, Harbinger Down is Studio Adi's first attempt to bring an independent feature to screen, focusing on their practical special effects. Also, the film was funded through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign and over two hundred and fifty thousand dollars were raised. The results are slightly mixed. Many of the special effects look heavily influenced by a previous Studio Adi undertaking, The Thing (2011) and the film's story is also inspired by this earlier film. Lighting is minimalized to almost hide the monstrous creations. Meanwhile, the story struggles to find impact. Harbinger Down misses the mark on a couple of.

Lance Henriksen: A Survivor’s Tale
A seminal event happened to actor Lance Henriksen in his late teens that serves as the perfect metaphor for his life: Henriksen was working at a rural New Mexico gas station, and was taken in by the couple who owned it. They had a teenage daughter a couple years his junior. One day, figuring Lance and his daughter were getting a bit too chummy; the man drove Henriksen out to the middle of the desert. “All winter long, the frost has been pushing up these beautiful amethyst stones,” the man explained. “I’ll drop you off and you can collect them, then come back and sell them for a lot of money.” Henriksen stayed half the night, and then started to succumb to the desert’s freezing temperatures. “I dug a hole and buried myself up to my chest, with a fire in front of me.

There’s nothing that makes a horror fan wetter than the words “practical effects” (yup, coming out guns blazing in this review). In a time of dull, lifeless Adr oversaturation, the art of blowing up a prosthetic heads full of gooey physical liquids has become a thing of the past. But Amalgamated Dynamics Inc., the team behind such creature films as Starship Troopers, Tremors and numerous Alien entries, are just a few of the modern-day heroes who believe monster movies should rely on extensive practical make-up/animatronics – and they want to do things their way. That’s why they took to Kickstarter with an entirely practical homage to The Thing called Harbinger Down, smashing past its $350K goal in the name of all that’s squishy, horrific, and disgusting.
Harbinger Down is the brainchild of veteran effects wizard Alec Gillis, who served as writer and director on this 80s-themed passion project.

Harbinger Down: "A group of grad students have booked passage on the fishing trawler Harbinger to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea. When the ship’s crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things get downright deadly. It seems that the Russians experimented with tardigrades, tiny resilient animals able to withstand the extremes of space radiation. The creatures survived, but not without a mutation. This Friday, a brand new creature feature called Stung arrives in theaters and on VOD. The film co-stars the iconic Lance Henriksen as Mayor Caruthers, one of the unfortunate party-goers at a shindig that gets attacked by mutated killer wasps who leave shredded corpses in their wake. Daily Dead recently chatted with Henriksen about the new horror comedy from director Benni Diaz as well as his involvement in several other upcoming projects, including Harbinger Down, and whether or not he’d be up for more Millennium if all goes well with the upcoming revival of Chris Carter’s other popular series, The X-Files.
This movie is a ton of fun—I grew up on a lot of creature features, mostly due to Elvira and her show, and I thought Stung was a great blend of old-school creature campiness with this sort of new-school twist to it.

The prospect of an old school, traditional effects driven horror movie excites me so much, I actually gave the Harbinger Down people money. Admittedly, this didn't sound like much of a gamble going in; it's not like this project is by a couple of newbies that have never made a movie before.

With technology rapidly advancing in the world of filmmaking to the point where almost every theatrical genre film or big-budget blockbuster heavily relies on the use of CGI, it’s nice to see guys like Tom Woodruff Jr. and Alec Gillis of Amalgamated Dynamics still so committed to the artistry and necessity of practical effects in moviemaking.
Both icons in the world of special effects, Woodruff Jr. and Gillis have collectively worked on a vast array of hugely successful and influential films throughout their careers, including The Terminator, Aliens, Cocoon, Predator, The Monster Squad, Pumpkinhead, Demolition Man, Tremors, Alien 3, Starship Troopers, Hollow Man, Jumanji, Spider-Man, Avp: Alien vs. Predator, and X-Men: First Class.
One of the recent projects the duo were a part of was Universal’s 2011 premake of The Thing, in which they were asked to create stunning practical creature effects to be used throughout production. Unfortunately, for both Woodruff Jr.

Did you Lance Henriksen is part of the cast of The Strain? Yes, when the show begins this Sunday night on FX you won't be seeing then veteran genre actor who has starred in films like Aliens, Pumpkinhead and the upcoming Harbinger Down, but you will certainly hear him. Similar to the work he contributed to in the When a Stranger Calls remake and various video games and cartoons, he's lending his recognizable vocal talents to Guillermo del Toro's horror series. The series doesn't even appear on the actor's IMDb page, strangely enough. But he is a participant and I had a chance to ask Del Toro about Henriksen's vocal contributions as "The Master" (the show's big bad).

With its icy mountain backdrop and emphasis on using practical effects, Harbinger Down no doubt conjures memories of John Carpenter’s The Thing. The film’s new trailer features a creature that would send familiar chills down the spines of R. J. Lance Henriksen has been working steadily in the movies (and television) for decades now, and he has the elongated IMDb page to prove it. Even with nearly 200 titles to his name though he will most likely always be remembered for his work through the ’80s in films like The Terminator, Near Dark, Aliens, Pumpkinhead and more. Those films share something more than simple genre though — they’re also loaded with still memorable practical effects work. Granted, it was the ’80s, and CGI wasn’t exactly a known quantity, but the fact remains that nearly thirty years later we’re still impressed and affected by the scene in Aliens where Bishop (Henriksen) is grabbed by the alien queen, ripped in half and thrown along the floor. It’s accomplished with practical visual effects, and when the artists who crafted the scene (Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr. of StudioADI ) set out to make their own Kickstarter-funded movie this...

No amount of impeccable CGI can replace the feeling of a tangible, practical, on-set special effect. It's why the T. rex breakout scene from Jurassic Park can still wow audiences 20 years later, and it's why the monster effects from The Thing are still mind-blowing today. If you agree, then have we got a movie for you: It's called Harbinger Down, and it's the directorial debut of effects masters Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr., who between them have worked on Aliens, The Terminator, Predator, Tremors, Starship Troopers and many, many more genre classics (pictured above are just a few of their company's creations). The rapid evolution of CGI means that traditional practical effects are becoming an increasingly rare sight in mainstream movies. A recent case in point: The Thing. Where John Carpenter's 1982 film was a showcase for Rob Bottin's extraordinary practical effects (with a few moments arriving courtesy of Stan Winston), the 2011 prequel was dominated largely by CGI.
In reality, the FX team Amalgamated Dynamics - previously responsible for the effects in such films as Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, to name but two - had created a range of icky practical creatures for The Thing 2011, only to have studio executives decide to overlay their work with CGI at the 11th hour.
Understandably disheartened by this, Amalgamated Dynamics decided to make their own science fiction horror film, which could finally show off their talent for creating practical monster effects.

Back in May of 2013 we told you about Harbinger Down, a tense, claustrophobic creature film that will feature only practical animatronic and makeup effects. We've followed the movie through every phase including a successful crowd funding campaign. Today the hard work and faith pays off!
Alec Gillis wrote and directed the flick with Adi co-founder Tom Woodruff, Jr. producing. Lance Henriksen, Matt Winston, Camille Balsamo, and Giovonnie Samuels star.
Synopsis
A group of grad students have booked passage on the fishing trawler Harbinger to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea. When the ship’s crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things get downright deadly. It seems that the Russians experimented with tardigrades, tiny resilient animals able to withstand the extremes of space radiation. The creatures survived, but not without mutation. Harbinger Down debuted a trailer this afternoon, offering a first-look at this creature feature that is brimming with practical FX. The interesting thing about this one: It's a crowdfunded film helmed by Alec Gillis of Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. Utilizing the FX team there, he created a tale, akin to The Thing, that stars Lance Henriksen. A promo debuted at Monsterpalooza in March; the trailer you see here is a more refined - and I will say stronger - cut that is still brimming with claws and tentacles and other gnarly stuff.

Synopsis:
A group of grad students have booked passage on the fishing trawler Harbinger to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea. When the ship's crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things get downright deadly. It seems that the Russians experimented with tardigrades, tiny resilient animals able to withstand the extremes of space radiation. The creatures survived, but not without mutation.
Now the crew is exposed to aggressively mutating organisms. And after being locked in ice for three decades, the creatures aren't about to give up the warmth of human companionship.

Back in May of 2013 we told you about Harbinger Down, a tense, claustrophobic creature film that will feature only practical animatronic and makeup effects. It shattered its Kickstarter goal, and now there's a really long and cool set visit online!
Thanks to 3,066 monster-loving backers, $384,181 was pledged, exceeding their initial goal of $350,000. Screw Veronica Mars! This is the kind of thing Kickstarter was made for! Hollywood just won't fund an original old-school monster movie, but it's good to see that the fans will! Amalgamated Dynamics' Alec Gillis writes and directs.
