Save for a couple of unfortunate attempts, Prime Video has really been on a streak of great adaptations in the 2020s so far. Apart from the more mainstream examples of that, the streamer released an animated TV show based on an iconic tabletop game franchise which, in many fans’ eyes, is the best adaptation of said game’s universe to date.
Misfit Adventurers to Return Later in 2024
Created by Critical Role, The Legend of Vox Machina is an epic animated series based on Dungeons & Dragons. It’s often dubbed as the best D&d adaptation out there even despite Honor Among Thieves’ existence. Like the latter, Vox Machina follows a group of misfit adventurers who are dragged into the whole “saving the world” business right from their favorite tavern.
First in The Washington Post article and then on Critical Role CEO Travis Willingham’s X account, the confirmations of Season 3 suddenly appeared.

After building an audience of more than 3.5 million viewers across YouTube and Twitch, Critical Role is hoping some of those folks will follow it off those platforms to its new subscription service, Beacon.
But hold on—if you’re thinking this is a repeat of Watcher‘s recent stumble, CritRole CEO and cast member Travis Willingham is quick to reassure that Beacon isn’t a way for Critical Role to paywall its ongoing content.
“Now, I’m sure many of you are asking, ‘Wait, what does this mean for Twitch and YouTube subscribers?'” he said in Beacon’s announcement video (embedded below). “And the answer is: nothing. Nothing changes for those audiences in how you view our main shows. You will still be able to watch and listen freely, with the same release schedule that it has always been for nine, going on ten years.”

‘After the Party’ in the U.K.
Channel 4 has acquired U.K. rights to the acclaimed New Zealand drama “After the Party” from Lingo Pictures.
The six-part series, co-created by and starring Robyn Malcolm (“Black Bird”), follows Penny Wilding, a mother, teacher and environmental activist, whose life imploded five years earlier after she accused her husband Phil, played by Peter Mullan, of a sex crime and nobody believed her.
When Penny’s now ex-husband returns to town, her daughter pressures her to let go of her accusations and move on. As her old furies rise to the surface, Penny must decide what’s more important – the truth or rebuilding her relationships with the people around her.
Co-created by Dianne Taylor, “After the Party” was produced by Australia’s Lingo Pictures and Luminous Beast in New Zealand as an original commission for New Zealand’s Tvnz in association with and distributed by ITV Studios.

Ever since 2012, when Donald Trump wrote a string of tweets about how Robert Pattinson should dump her, Kristen Stewart has occupied a curious space in the conservative imagination.

“The Last of Us” video game voice actress Ashley Johnson filed a civil lawsuit this week against her ex-fiancé Brian Foster for domestic violence, assault, stalking, intentional infliction of emotional distress and other alleged violations. Six other women also joined the suit in Los Angeles Superior Court — their allegations against Foster also include sexual battery.
In a statement provided to TheWrap, Bryan Freedman, lawyer for Ashley Johnson and the 6 other plaintiffs said, “The police officer who reviewed the evidence was so concerned for Ashley Johnson’s safety that he went on his own to a judge to get an immediate emergency protective order against Brian W. Foster. Since then, six additional women have come forward. This lawsuit is filed to both remedy the abuse Foster has inflicted on my seven clients as well as to prevent others from being victimized by Foster’s pattern of mental, emotional and physical abuse.

Ever since Abbas Kiarostami’s And Life Goes On premiered back in 1992, movies set in cars have become the modus operandi of some of Iranian cinema’s greatest works.
Kiarostami followed Life with Through the Olive Trees, where driving is also a major part of the narrative, and then made his masterly Palme d’Or winner Taste of Cherry, where the main character is at the wheel for nearly the entire film. Director Jafar Panahi, who was once Kiarostami’s assistant, won Berlin’s Golden Bear in 2015 for Taxi, in which he pretended to be a cab driver in order to scrutinize his country’s dire social situation. In 2021, Panahi’s son, Panah, made his debut with the exuberant and crowd-pleasing Hit the Road, about a family taking one last road trip together toward the Turkish border.

Epic fantasy series based on hugely popular and intricate books are on almost every network and streamer, from “House of the Dragon” and “The Rings of Power” to “The Witcher” and “The Wheel of Time.” Then there’s Amazon Prime Video’s “The Legend of Vox Machina,” an animated series as intricate and complex as any of its live-action counterparts, but with a key difference: Its source material is “Critical Role,” an improvised livestream on YouTube and Twitch in which professional actors portray characters playing Dungeons & Dragons.

"Dungeons & Dragons," and tabletop RPGs in general, are some of the most fun you can do with a group. The crafting of a fantasy world and the improvised telling of a story as a community is exhilarating, and it's no surprise that livestream campaigns of these games have become so popular in recent years. As time-consuming as the games can be, they offer long-form storytelling that can never be replicated, because no two tables and no two campaigns are the same.
Of course, there are "Dungeons & Dragons" livestreams and then there's "Critical Role," a livestream show where a group of voice actors, led by Matt Mercer, play a game of "D&d." The show started streaming in 2015 and it quickly grew to titanic levels of popularity, with millions of views and subscribers. Amazon has made a mighty embrace of the Critical Role cinematic universe.
Amazon Studios announced a multiyear exclusive overall TV and first-look film deal with Critical Role, the media company and D&d role-playing group behind Prime Video’s popular adult animation series “The Legend of Vox Machina.”
The first new series to be produced under the agreement is “Mighty Nein,” based on Critical Role’s second campaign, which ran from January 2018 to mid-2021. The actual-play stream has been running for years, featuring a cast of professional voice actors and friends playing characters in long-running campaigns once a week, every Thursday, for four hours a session. That’s a huge time sink for the uninitiated, and it can be intimidating! Fortunately, now’s a great time to get started.
Last October, Critical Role returned from a hiatus with their third campaign set in Dm Matt Mercer’s homebrew world of Exandria. Where the first two campaigns explored the continents of Tal’dorei and Wildemount, this new one is set in Marquet.
It’s an exciting time, learning a new chapter of a campaign setting’s world, learning a new land and new characters alongside it. While the characters of the first two campaigns...

We finally know what’s been making that ruckus in the Shuster Mines — and it’s not what, or rather who, most fans expected.
Appropriately titled “The Thing in the Mines,” Tuesday’s episode of Superman & Lois finally revealed the identity of… the thing in the mines. Following its escape from the underground, the mystery creature got into a scuffle with the Man of Steel, during which we discovered that it’s actually — wait for it — Bizarro Superman!

On the evening of March 12, 2015, Critical Role had its first public showing. In a livestreamed event from a dimly lit studio in Burbank, eight players sat at a table immersed in a Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game for nearly three hours — their first foray in a form of storytelling that would bloom into an indie media empire, complete with an upcoming Amazon show.
Before C.R. began streaming shows on Twitch and YouTube, it started as a group of friends who knew each other from voice-over gigs in animation and video games playing D&d together. The first two sessions were at the L.A. apartment of Matthew Mercer, Critical Role’s long-standing dungeon master, and Marisha Ray, who is now the company’s creative director; they then moved to the house of Travis Willingham (now CEO) and Laura Bailey (who handles C.R.’s merchandise business). “It was an excuse to hang out together,...

A new study conducted by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and Time’s Up has found that film criticism is dominated by white men, with 78 percent of reviews from 2015 to 2017 written by male critics, and 83 percent written by white critics.
The report surveyed reviews of 300 top-grossing films from 2015 to 2017 posted on Rotten Tomatoes to assess gender and race/ethnicity of critics, including how this varies by film distributor and publication outlets.
Nearly 60,000 reviews were logged in the report, which found that nonwhite women only wrote 3.7 percent, white female critics wrote 17 percent, and nonwhite men wrote 13 percent.

Exclusive: Stalin’s Russia is set to be portrayed on the small screen after Episodes and Flack producer Hat Trick Productions optioned Simon Sebag Montefiore’s novel One Night in Winter.
The book tells the story of marriage, childhood, danger, and betrayal in Stalin’s Moscow during the bleak days after World War II.
The move is a major drama statement for Jimmy Mulville’s Hat Trick, which is best known for producing comedies, including Channel 4’s hit teen series Derry Girls, and panel shows such as Have I Got News For You. Against all odds, good taste, and common sense, the “Baywatch” movie is washing up on multiplex shores this week. If it’s successful as anticipated, it will likely inspire a new wave of film producers hunting for TV IP. This is a plea to hold fire.
It can work, of course. “Firefly” fans long begged for a movie version of the short-lived Joss Whedon series and got one in “Serenity”; “Deadwood” aficionados are similarly holding out for a big screen version of the HBO series. “Sex and the City,” “Twin Peaks,” “The X-Files,” and “The Simpsons” have all taken a run at the feature-length route, with some very mixed results. And recent hits like “Fargo,” “Friday Night Lights,” and “Westworld” made the reverse jump from movie to series, while Justin Simien’s Sundance premiere “Dear White People” is now enjoying a healthy run as a Netflix series.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best concept episode that’s been on television?
Sonia Saraiya (@soniasaraiya), Variety
I have to admit a recency bias, I guess, but “BoJack Horseman’s” “Fish Out of Water” has stuck with me in a way that no other concept episode has — a gimmick that didn’t feel gimmicky but instead desperately necessary for the forward motion of the episode. It’s not quite fair, because “Community,” for example, is comprised almost entirely of concept episodes, and it’s hard to disagree with how much “Buffy’s” “Hush” and “Once More, with Feeling” inspired other, later shows. But “Fish Out of Water” was...

Dubois Records, in cooperation with Mammoth Screen and Masterpiece will release the Victoria – Original Soundtrack digitally on all music streaming platforms to coincide with the Us release of the television series on PBS this coming weekend. The album features the limited series’ original score by multi-bafta and Ivor Novello winning composer Martin Phipps (Woman In Gold, The Keeping Room) and Ruth Barrett (City Of Tiny Lights, Whitechapel) with vocals from the Mediaeval Baebes. Victoria was first aired on ITV in the UK on August 28, 2016.
Phipps says: “The idea was to give Victoria a dynamic voice, an explosive theme through which we could rejoice in her strength & courage. The Mediaeval Baebes were the perfect sound for this. With one foot in the classical world & one in the commercial, they gave Victoria the mixture of refinement & attitude I was after.”

“Finding Neverland” turned the creation of “Peter Pan” into an Oscar-nominated drama back in 2004, and Fox Searchlight is surely hoping that’s the case for its upcoming A.A. Milne biopic. The author created the children’s classic “Winnie the Pooh,” and he’ll be the subject of the untitled drama that will also focus on the coming-of-age of Milne’s son, Christopher Robbin. Fox Searchlight has announced production is officially underway in Oxfordshire, Surrey, East Sussex and London, and some new first look photos have debuted on USA Today to mark the occasion.

News that the BBC, showing excellent sense, had simultaneously commissioned a third and fourth series of Jed Mercurio's stunning Line Of Duty arrived just after the conclusion to series two. Now we've a clearer idea of the schedule plan.
World Productions has confirmed that series four is currently being written to film later this year, according to our chums at Cultbox. By our reckoning then, we might expect series four to arrive on our screens in 2017.
The two-year gap between series two and three was down to creator and writer Jed Mercurio's involvement in Sky medical drama Critical, but it looks as though the BBC crime show will have his full attention since it was confirmed that no further episodes of Critical would be made.

Critical aired one season on Sky 1 before it was cancelled earlier this year. Lennie James, best known as Morgan from The Walking Dead, starred on the British medical drama, and he is not at all happy that the series was not given a real chance to develop and continue on for a second season. It only aired 13 episodes.
Digital Spy shared James' comments about the series.
"I would've loved to have gone back and done another series. The show is something I'm immensely proud of. I had a huge amount of fun doing it. I think it was a show that may well have taken Sky by surprise, but I do think that it warranted being supported more by Sky, and being given the second chance, but what else am I going to say?"

Sky 1 called time on medical thriller Critical earlier this year - and now star Lennie James has argued that the real-time drama was poorly served by the channel.
James - now a regular on The Walking Dead - had made time in his schedule to shoot a second series of Critical, before Sky announced the show's cancellation in the summer.

James said that Critical - from award-winning writer Jed Mercurio - was "trying something different" and needed a different sort of promotion.

The rumours have been rife, but now we have it 100% confirmed - Jenna Coleman is leaving Doctor Who, which means the hunt is on for her replacement.
Who's fit to follow in Clara's footsteps? 12 suggestions follow - from the silly to the serious.
Jenna Coleman will star as Queen Victoria in a major new ITV drama
1. Ingrid Oliver
Unit scientist Osgood - first name as yet undisclosed - is perhaps the natural choice to replace Clara.
Smart, plucky and with a taste for adventure, she's got all the qualities one looks for in a companion - and was already eyed as a potential by the Doctor before her untimely demise ("All of time and space - something for your bucket list.").
Now that she's apparently returned from the dead, perhaps Osgood could step aboard the Tardis in series nine - providing she's not a Zygon duplicate.

Welcome Back #1
Writer: Christopher Sebela
Artist: Jonathan Brandon Sawyer
Colorist: Carlos Zamudio
Publisher: Boom! Studios
Price: $4
Description: Mali and Tessa have lived hundreds of different lives throughout time, caught up in an eternal cycle as they take part in a war so old that neither side remembers what they’re fighting for anymore. As Mali wakes up in her newest life, she suddenly becomes self-aware and starts to question everything, especially why she continues to fight. But elsewhere, Tessa is already on the hunt…
Our Take: I have joked in the past about changing the name of this column to “Sebelaworld” and at this point I’ve stopped finding that funny. I mean, it’s his fault for always writing stories that just fit perfectly into the Destroy The Brain niche but I mean I could just not talk about his books. So how about artist Jon Sawyer?...

Sky1 has called time on its fast-paced medical series Critical.
Lennie James fronted the drama as the head of a major trauma unit, tasked with treating seriously-wounded patients.
Critical aired 13 episodes between February and May - pulling in a series average of 192,000 viewers - but will not be back for a second series.
"We are really proud of the acclaim Critical received and its ground-breaking achievements in the production of TV medical drama," Sky1 said in a statement. "We would like to thank Jed Mercurio, the team at Hat Trick Productions and all our cast."
The show was created by Line of Duty writer Jed Mercurio, with each episode unfolding in real time as Glen Boyle (James) and his team worked to save their latest patient.
Back in May, Kimberley Nixon - who played Dr Harry Bennett-Edwardes - told Digital Spy that there was "huge hope" for a second series of Critical.

Believe it or not, 2015 is half done already - and the past six months have delivered some top-notch television, much of it brand new drama, comedy and documentaries.
Picking the finest from a particularly fine crop was no easy task, but these were our rules: it had to launch in 2015, it must have aired one series / season in its entirety and it had to be a continuing series.
So no-one off pieces - e.g. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - and nothing that got the chop - sorry, Banished.
Here - in original broadcast order - are the DS Staff Picks from the year so far.
Marvel's Agent Carter - Morgan Jeffery, TV Editor
Hopes were high for Marvel's Agent Carter - not least because fans had been clamouring for a series featuring Hayley Atwell's heroine ever since her 2013 One-Shot short film.
Happily, this 8-part first season met and...

Is Critical coming back to Sky1? Series star Kimberley Nixon has confirmed there's "huge hope" for a second series.
Nixon - who plays Harry Bennett-Edwardes on the medical drama - told Digital Spy that there has been "talk" of shooting more episodes in 2016.
"I'm not sure if it's coming back for a second series," she said. "I think there's definitely a huge hope for it.
"More than anything, the set cost a fortune - so there was talk of doing another series, mainly to get their money's worth, really!"
Nixon revealed that she'd like to see her "rookie" character become tougher and more ruthless if the show were to continue.
"In the first series, Harry's such a rookie - very much the nervous new girl," she said. "But we used to joke that by series 15, she'd be [like Lennie James's character] Glen Boyle. She'd be hardened - don't f**k with her!"
