In his 4 star review of Don’T Breathe, Tom Stockman enthusiastically says, “While none of the young actors make much of an impression with weak and unlikable characters, I still wish there had more of them to kill. I want a sequel! Heck, put ‘The Blind Man’ in the next Suicide Squad movie….with his dog Cujo and that turkey baster, he’d the most impressive villain on the screen!” (Review).

Sacred Bones has released another new Alan Vega song, “Fist,” from the late Suicide frontman’s upcoming lost album, Mutator, out April 23rd.
“Fist” finds a unique balance between mesmerizing and abrasive — locked in a steady drum groove with one synth swirling languidly while the other whirrs with a relentless fury. Vega’s vocals, drenched in echo, add another hypnotizing layer to the song.

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, make sure you’re doing work on Jared Leto. That might be one lesson from the Oscars shortlists, where Leto’s film “The Little Things” was included among the 10 semi-finalists in that category. If it ultimately receives a nomination and wins, it would be the third Leto film in less than 10 years to win this exact award.

Billy Idol has always pushed the boundaries of chronological time, starting with the anachronistic 1970s punk look he pushed all over 1980s MTV. Idol turned 65 on November 30th, three days after the release of Miley Cyrus’ new album, Plastic Hearts, which features a brand-new duet with him on the excellent track “Night Crawling,” reviving the synth-punk sound of his classics. For some, he will always be Pukey Nicholls, the troubled skinhead from Shane Meadows’ This Is England. For other equally early adopters across the pond, he’s James “Cookie Monster” Cook in the British teen show Skins. Oh, and the wounded outlaw in Netflix’s Western miniseries Godless?...

This afternoon brought the latest bit of unexpected DC news in a year that’s been full of it. Today we learned that Jared Leto is coming back as the Joker in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The revamp of the 2017 team-up flick is shooting new scenes now, and it’s been reliably reported that the actor is already on set.
When Suicide Squad first came out, Leto was blasted for his portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime, but like much of the Dceu, his performance has been reappraised in recent years and he now has a lot of fans. And those fans have flooded social media with excited reactions following the announcement that he’s returning for a second outing, as you can see below.
This is insane!

Generations makes a strong case that Arcade Fire’s second most famous Butler brother, Will, could be the group’s pop mastermind with its quirky, upbeat rockers about modern life. He opens the record with “Outta Here,” which he built with fuzzy analog keyboards and smartypants lyrics like, “Had enough bad news/Had enough of your generation.” It recalls Eno and Bowie in its synthiness but also Spoon in its sunny determination. “Close My Eyes” feels a bit like Suicide pretending to be a power-pop band with its quivering keys...

The onscreen exploits of stuntwomen, and their off-screen battles for fair and equal treatment, is explored in Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story, a new documentary from director April Wright for Shout! Studios that debuts September 22 on digital platforms.
Narrated by Fast & Furious franchise star Michelle Rodriquez and based on Mollie Gregory’s 2015 best-seller, the film chronicles the lives of women who perform the stunts in some of Hollywood’s biggest action sequences — from the early days of silent movies to today’s blockbusters. The producers are Stephanie Austin, Michael Gruskoff and Marion Rosenberg.
“These unheralded heroines are the generations of stuntwomen who risked their lives in front of the camera, while behind it they fought for equal rights with male stunt performers, battled sexism and harassment, sustained life-threatening injuries and returned to the fray after each battle,” the producing team said in a joint statement.

The O.G. of TV true crime has returned. Before there was Making a Murderer, Tiger King, The Jinx, and Serial, the nation’s fix for real-life murder tales came in weekly doses courtesy of Unsolved Mysteries, which ran interrupted from 1987 to 2002. Since the series left airwaves, the genre has grown into a powerhouse: Some networks dedicate their entire programming slate to it (hi, Oxygen), and streaming services rely on true-crime for viral hits.

What happens when a dog finally catches a car? We’re set to find out next year, when HBO Max finally debuts Zack Snyder’s Justice League as it was originally meant to be seen. Reports indicate that this version of the project, which attempted to bring DC superheroes Wonder Woman, Batman, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg together for a big screen live-action adventure back in 2017, will either manifest as a four-hour film, or as a six-part series on the streaming service.
“It will be an entirely new thing, and, especially talking to those who have seen the released movie, a new experience apart from that movie,” Snyder has promised. “You probably saw one-fourth of what I did.”
Naturally, now that a Snyder Cut of Justice League is finally coming to fruition, fan attention is turning to David Ayer’s Dceu team-up effort Suicide Squad, which staggered onto screens in...

The Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 remasters have quickly become the talk of the gaming world. There’s really no mystery as to why that’s the case. Not only do millions of people have fond memories of the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games, but few titles released since the first two Tony Hawk games have challenged their brand of high-octane extreme sports action.
Yet, we suspect there’s another reason so many people are excited about the re-release of the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games. Yes, as you no doubt guessed from the headline of the article you’re currently reading, it’s the soundtracks.
The Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater soundtracks quickly became infamous upon their release for not only featuring an array of licensed tracks (which was still something of a rarity for the time) but songs that captured the culture of the extreme sports movement.

Everyone hates Harley Quinn. At least, that’s where Cathy Yan’s ambitious “Birds of Prey” starts: Margot Robbie’s glitter-loving anti-heroine is attempting to pick up the pieces after being kicked to the curb by the Joker, forced to carve out a new life for herself without the built-in protection of Gotham’s biggest baddie, and struggling to find her place in a world eager to divide its brassiest characters into “good” and “bad.” Yan’s film, written by “Bumblebee” scribe Christina Hodson, imagines a vivid (and very human) new origin story for Harley Quinn, resulting in .
Yet Harley’s titular emancipation — the film’s subtitle is the wordy, if honest “And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn” — still takes a backseat to franchise conventions, from the good to the cloying and the bad (disjointed plotting and a messy narrative).
Yan and Hodson get the boring stuff out...

Wonder Woman is wonderful but not everyone can be a gorgeous, all-powerful Themysciran princess who’s also a demi-god. DC’s latest Birds of Prey--a follow up (of sorts) to Suicide Squad that's also everything that movie wasn’t--is a grubby, funny, joyful female team-up that resonantly shows us heroes come in all shapes, sizes, and colors.
Suicide Squad was a cinematic car crash, so there’s something so satisfying about the fact that four years later, released over a weekend where a movie about the Joker is nominated for 11 Oscars, Harley has also completely reinvented herself as a flawed, powerful and empowering leader in a film that reverses her character’s former betrayal.

When you’re a production designer, and your mood board is the mental state of the film’s lead character, it seems like the creative world is your oyster. When the lead character is Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, that’s a creative world where all bets are off.
“I approached everything through her ditzy, glitzy, analytical, yet throwaway, approach to absorbing the world,” explains K.K. Barrett, the man responsible for creating the world of “Birds of Prey.”
There is nothing subtle about Harley Quinn. Barrett adds, “It’s almost like you’re telling a crazy story to someone that goes off on a tangent, and you have to keep pulling it back and focusing it.

Forget the horror films of 2019 — was there anything scarier than that first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer, featuring a disturbingly toothy rendition of the video game hero? It created such an outcry that the film was bumped to February 2020; thankfully, you’ve got a lot of other choices re: what to check out this month at the movies, from a supervillainess getting her moment in the spotlight to a few fresh literary adaptations, an ingenious new take on a classic Universal monster-movie staple and an A-list American remake of a Swedish black comedy.

Following the success of “Joker” last year, DC Films is continuing its gritty streak with “Birds of Prey,” a slam-bang adventure about Harley Quinn.
Though DC Film’s 2016 tentpole “Suicide Squad” took a critical bashing at the time, filmgoers quickly took a liking to Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn. “Birds of Prey” gives the fan favorite character her own adventure, having her ditch the male-dominated Squad to work alongside a rogues’ gallery of women.
For the creators behind the upcoming movie, an R-rating was the only way the project made any sense.
“Harley’s not really someone to hold back,” Robbie told Variety‘s Marc Malkin on Thursday at the opening of Harleywood in Hollywood. “The R-rating really allowed us to take it to the next level with fight scenes.”
Director Cathy Yan added, “The women are unabashedly themselves and very unapologetic in the movie. It was very...

British broadcaster Channel 4 has acquired Batwoman and Harley Quinn from Warner Bros and Duncanville, the animation from Amy Poehler and The Simpsons veterans Mike and Julie Scully.
Batwoman will broadcast on Channel 4’s youth network E4 in 2020, featuring Ruby Rose as the DC character — the first openly gay female lead of a live-action superhero show.
The show, made by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros, was renewed last week for a second season by The CW.
E4 will also be the home of Harley Quinn, the bawdy, made-for-adults animated show starring Kaley Cuoco as the DC character, who was played by Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad. Both shows were sold by Warner Bros. International Television Distribution.
Elsewhere, Channel 4 has picked up Fox’s Duncanville in a deal with NBCUniversal. It is hoping the animated show and Harley Quinn can capture some of the success it has had with Rick And Morty.

Jared Leto is about to get more than he bargained for in Morbius.
Sony released the first teaser trailer for the thriller starring Leto as Michael Morbius, a scientist with a rare blood disorder who goes to extreme lengths to try and find a cure.
“Michael, I’ve known you since you were a child. You have a gift. You always have. If there’s an answer to your disease, you’ll find it,” Jared Harris narrates in the beginning of the trailer as shots of Michael’s early life play.
“I should’ve died years ago,” Michael himself says.

Jared Leto gets his second stab at starring in a comic book movie with the July release of Morbius, the latest installment of Sony’s Spider-Man-adjacent series that also features Venom and may ultimately include Tom Holland’s Peter Parker as well. It would be fair to say that Leto’s superhero track record isn’t the greatest, with his performance as the Joker in Suicide Squad proving divisive among fans, along with the constant rumors of truly bizarre on-set behavior.
The 48 year-old is reportedly done as the Clown Prince of Crime though, with the latest Birds of Prey trailer making it look as if Harley Quinn kills him off for good. It’s been an interesting few months for mainstream movies and promises of Lgbtq+ representation, from “Avengers: Endgame” and its blink-and-you-miss-it “gay moment” to “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” and its also blink-and-you-miss-it (and cut out of its Singapore release) same-sex kiss to whatever the McU is doing with a future trans character. Jay Roach’s Roger Ailes scandal piece “Bombshell” is not on the scale of those movies nor was it ever promoted with the promise of similar inclusion, but after a Variety cover story with one of the film’s stars, Margot Robbie, it has technically joined the conversation of hypothetical representation in film.
In “Bombshell,” Robbie’s Kayla Pospisil sleeps with Kate McKinnon’s closeted lesbian character Jess Carr after a drunken night at the bar. In the aftermath, Kayla tells Jess, “Oh, I’m not a lesbian!” What could easily have been just a throwaway line,...

David Ayer is a filmmaker that tends to draw an immediate reaction from film fans. Either you love him and respect his work on films such as “Training Day” and “End of Watch” or you are a bit disgusted when you remember “Suicide Squad” or “Bright.” Needless to say, there are very few out there that are just “meh” on the guy.

It took a lot longer than the studio probably wanted, but Warner Bros. and DC’s cinematic universe is finally beginning to gain some momentum and head in the right direction. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League were two films that tried to run before they could walk, stuffing in so much story and so many characters that they both ended up as total messes, while Suicide Squad was the victim of severe studio interference.
But the billion dollar success of Aquaman and the excellent reviews for Shazam! have gone a long way to rehabilitating the franchise’s reputation. And as it turns out, the success of the latter has also helped its star, Zachary Levi, come back from a very dark place.

Now that Warner Bros’ “Joker” has made the Oscar shortlist for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, it’s one of the front-runners to take home the Academy Award. The film’s artisans were responsible for physically transforming a well-known actor into someone else entirely, much in the same way the past few Oscar winners in this category have done. Think “Vice” (2018) transforming Christian Bale into veep Dick Cheney, “Darkest Hour” (2017) turning Gary Oldman into a dead ringer for Winston Churchill, and “Suicide Squad” (2016) making A-listers like Margot Robbie and Jared Leto into comic book villains Harley Quinn and the Joker.

Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn was one of the few aspects of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad that received anything resembling universal praise, with both critics and fans in agreement that the Australian actress’ performance was one of the movie’s undoubted highlights. The character proved so popular, in fact, that a spinoff was announced soon after, with Robbie also stepping into the role of producer on director Cathy Yan’s upcoming Birds of Prey.
While the movie will only tangentially link to the larger Dceu, there’s one major character that won’t feature in Birds of Prey, and that’s the Joker. The future of the Clown Prince of Crime is a little murky at the moment, with Jared Leto’s unpopular portrayal seemingly making him persona non grata with DC and Warner Bros., while Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck led the standalone Joker to billion-dollar success and a major awards season push.

Seeing as Task Force X is made up of villains, the big bad the team goes up against needs to be pretty bad indeed. 2016’s Suicide Squad had the gang facing down Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress and her plans to destroy the world. James Gunn’s upcoming reboot/sequel The Suicide Squad, meanwhile, is expected to stay away from magic, but it is reportedly throwing another world-level threat the Squad’s way. And they’re a major figure in DC comics lore.

Welcome to the DC Extended Universe, Cathy Yan. She won the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Prize at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival for her bracing debut “Dead Pigs,” and was quickly scooped by Warner Bros. and DC to helm “Birds of Prey.” Subtitled “The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Miss Harley Quinn,” the tentpole is led by Margot Robbie’s cupid of crime in a candy-colored display of female power.
During a recent chat with /Film, Yan spoke about the cinematic influences on “Birds of Prey,” and with this introduction to the film, she has certainly set a high bar of expectations for her upcoming DC debut.
“The way that I sort of talked about the structure of the film is a bit like ‘Pulp Fiction’ meets ‘Rashomon.’ So it’s an unconventional structure,” Yan said. “For me, there’s a lot of my favorite filmmakers that have influences on this film,...

“Suicide Squad” is one of the worst reviewed comic book films of the decade, but Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn looks to have a big comeback in store with next year’s “Birds of Prey” followed by the James Gunn-directed “Suicide Squad” sequel/reboot. Robbie spoke to ScreenRant from the “Birds of Prey” set and admitted that her storyline in the original “Suicide Squad” left her puzzled. Robbie couldn’t understand the romance between Harley and Joker, played by Jared Leto. “Birds of Prey” begins shortly after the two characters break up, a narrative Robbie finds more relatable as an actress.
“I guess what’s always surprised me, and I said this when publicizing ‘Suicide Squad,’ the first film, is that her relationship with Joker always did confuse me the most,” Robbie said. “That was the thing that took me the longest to get my head around. In this...

The Suicide Squad is less of a straight-up sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 original and more of a reboot that DC’s hoping will relaunch Task Force X in a less divisive way. James Gunn has filled his movie with a host of famous faces playing new anti-villains, too, and it seems the studio is now entertaining the idea of creating some spinoffs around them. In particular, Idris Elba may be getting his own film as his Tss character.
