Actress/writer/stand-up comedian Jenny Slate, whose credits include Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All at Once, the Marvel Comics adaptation Venom, and Saturday Night Live, has signed on to star in the horror film Mindful, which Deadline describes as being about “a possessed meditation app that begins to kill its followers.”
Perry Blackshear (They Look Like People) will be directing the film from a screenplay by Leslie Bohem, who got his start writing House III: The Horror Show and A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child. In the decades since, Bohem has worked on the likes of Nowhere to Run, Daylight, Dante’s Peak, The Darkest Hour, The Alamo, and the mini-series Taken. The story he has crafted for Mindful has the following synopsis: When her husband shockingly dies while meditating on the Mindful app, Angela (Slate), deeply suspicious of the new wellness craze, uncovers supernatural forces that have fused with the technology.

Perry Blackshear, the director of the 2015 indie slow-burn film They Look Like People, is back with another really interesting, micro-budget creeper, When I Consume You. The premise is simple. A brother and sister try to fend off a mysterious stalker. It gets less simple when this stalker seems to appear out of nowhere, materializing in the darkness of a closet or in the shadows of a sketchy urban street. And then there are those glowing yellow eyes that seem to not just pierce, but see into and Know everything about them. It's the perfect metaphor for trauma. An all-seeing, all-knowing demon that's always with you, and it appears whenever you're at your lowest and most vulnerable. It's a thing that you can't shake, no...

When I Consume You marks the third feature for New York filmmaker Perry Blackshear following his award-winning psychological horror feature debut They Look Like People and celebrated sophomore effort, the aquatic supernatural horror romance The Siren. His latest is described as: "a gritty, slow-burn urban folktale about family, damnation, and redemption." A young woman and her brother seek revenge against a mysterious stalker. It's a unique urban folktale set and filmed in Brooklyn, confronting the vulnerabilities people struggle with every day through a genre lens to create a chillingly intimate indie horror nightmare. One of the lesser-sung items among umpteen offbeat little ’70s movies was Larry Yust’s “Homebodies.” That 1974 black comedy on the cusp of horror was about a community of frail old retirees who turn out to be surprisingly vigorous — even homicidal — in defending their homes from the callous forces of market-driven “progress.” A similar premise is the starting point for “Bingo Hell,” which alongside “Black as Night” kicks off the second quartet of genre features premiering under the “Welcome to the Blumhouse” umbrella on Amazon Prime. This first full-length solo directorial project for Gigi Saul Guerrero exchanges the Cincinnati grit of “Homebodies” for the hotter palette of a Southern California desert town.
The comedy and horror elements get amped up as well — maybe too much so. In any case, what starts out looking like another caustic commentary on gentrification at the expense of the elderly soon takes a turn into half-baked Stephen King territory,...

I was lucky enough to watch and review director Perry Blackshear’s previous movies The Siren and They Look Like People. Both are really impressive movies. Bringing fresh and original ideas to sci-fi and horror I knew he was a director that I would be keeping an eye on in his future projects. Perry Blackshear, writer-director of “They Look Like People” and “The Siren,” has returned with genre bending “When I Consume You,” a suspenseful twist on revenge and courage in the face of helplessness. The spectral romance A Ghost Awaits (2020) will be available on Blu-ray May 4th from Arrow Video
You Are Not Alone.
An ingeniously unique and unpredictable combo of horror, humor and heart, A Ghost Waits is a DIY labor of love years in the making from first-time writer/director Adam Stovall and producer/star MacLeod Andrews.
Tasked with renovating a neglected rental home, handyman Jack quickly finds out why the tenants keep leaving in droves – this house is haunted. The ghost in question is Muriel (Natalie Walker), herself employed from beyond the veil to keep the home vacant. Against the odds, Jack and Muriel find they have a lot in common… pulse notwithstanding. Having found a kindred spirit in an otherwise lonely existence, they must fight for their newfound affection as pressure mounts for them each to fulfil their ‘cross-purposes’.

Tagline: "Love Will Haunt You." The Siren is the next horror film from director Perry Blackshear (They Look Like People). This tale of the supernatural and revenge will be released by Dark Sky Film. In the story, a lovelorn spirit draws Tom (Evan Dumouchel) to her watery home. Near this body of water, another character is looking for answers, after a monster destroyed his marriage. The Siren will release in the New Year. And, this title also stars: Margaret Ying Drake ("Devoted") and Evan Dumouchel. More details on the release are hosted here. A few early reviews have gone into more details on the film's story. Jay Seaver at EFilmCritic sees the film's creature as a metaphor: "its title monster all but explicitly defined as a metaphor for being destroyed by a broken heart and lashing out afterward." Emotions are almost always strong after a break-up. Paul Chapinal (Film-news) talks...

The opening scene of They Look Like People sets the tone for the rest of the film to follow: it’s minimalist, thought-provoking and creepy as hell. We see nothing more than a man lying in bed staring into the face of his sleeping partner, but through clever lighting, her face is shrouded in blackness. Or is it a lighting trick…? The camera lingers and unease builds.
We are introduced to two men, the aforementioned Wyatt (MacLeod Andrews) and Christian (Evan Dumouchel), an old friend. They bump into each other at random and as it becomes apparent that Wyatt is seemingly in a bad patch and ‘between homes’, he ends up crashing at Christian’s flat. Christian, though outwardly more together, is a similarly damaged bag of neuroses, exercising compulsively and listening to motivational audiobooks.

For those of you genre fans out there always on the lookout for interesting horror and sci-fi films to enjoy from the comfort of your own home, March’s VOD selections feature several great indie movies that should make for some entertaining viewings this month.
Ava’s Possessions, a film I really dug out of last year’s SXSW Film Festival, is finally making its way onto VOD this Friday and Emelie, the babysitter thriller from Dark Sky Films, is also getting a digital release that day. Other titles arriving on VOD in early March include The Wave, Road Games and Camino.
The month’s VOD titles are being capped off by a film that I’ve been excited to see for some time, Baskin, which is being released by IFC Midnight on March 25th. Other notable VOD titles for March include Dudes & Dragons, You’re Killing Me, A Haunting...

In today's crowded film landscape about a dozen new releases hit theaters each weekend, most of which are limited or specialty films that don’t have the budget for large publicity campaigns but which are often the best and most compelling offers.
These films, lucky enough to get theatrical distribution, often only get one-week runs in one or two theaters per city, and even those who managed to get picked up by a larger specialty distributor have to fight to rise above the studio fare. Hoping to highlight some of these films for audiences to discover them, One Week Only is a new weekly podcast exclusively dedicated to international, independent and under-the-radar films that deserve a closer look.
Hosted by filmmaker Conor Holt and I, Carlos Aguilar, One Week Only hopes to be an alternative space for audiences to find out and get excited about cinema beyond the multiplex.
A new episode is released every Friday afternoon. You can follow One Week Only on Facebook and on Twitter.

It begins in the dark hollows of your mind. But you can feel it in your heart. Pumping through your veins. The notion that something is wrong. That the world is wrong. That reality is not what it seems. That you are not worthy. And then the phone calls begin. And you're told you are worthy. You are one of the blessed. You must prepare for the coming war against a world that is now hidden, but will soon be revealed to be full of monsters. Your friends, your lover... they are all monsters. They only look like people. This is the nature of director Perry Blackshear's feature debut They Look Like People. Here’s my Top Ten films and other treats from 2015 (in no particular order):
Best Movies 1) Fury Road
After 15 minutes I turned to my wife and said I was exhausted… Thankfully I got my breath back and Fury Road refused to let up. True to the originals, Tom Hardy’s Max says very little and through Charlize Theron’s Furiosa we arguably got our first feminist action movie – or so it seemed according to the lunatic fringe of fanboy culture as they whipped themselves into a frenzy on many a blog.
2) Carol
Todd Haynes adapted Carol from Patricia Highsmith 1952 novel: The Price Of Salt. The sumptuous period style, stunning cinematic storytelling and stand out performances from Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara and American Horror Story’s Sarah Paulson combine to make a film experience of a forbidden lesbian love affair – that’s akin to an Edward Hopper painting coming to life.

Per their competition rule, these are all first time feature directors: the best of what's next. Among the 20 titles are 16 premieres, including 12 world premieres.A few narraitve titles I'm taking note of right now include Diy political thriller If There's A Hell Below. Slamdance, being the kings of lo-fi that they are, generally have a few outta-da-blue titles. Last year the grand champ was the terrifying They Look Like People, which went on to rave reviews and fest...

Last weekend, as the weather began to turn crisp and cold, the ninth iteration of the Buffalo International Film Festival went off, to bigger crowds and bigger acclaim than ever before.
The Film Stage’s first-produced short film Strange Bird was lucky enough to be included in the line-up, premiering at the newly-restored North Park Theatre on Hertel Avenue in front of writer/director Perry Blackshear’s Diy-thriller They Look Like People, which won a Special Jury Award at the Slamdance Film Festival along with a slew of other accolades at several impressive fests.
It was a bittersweet year for the festival following the passing of its founder, Edward Summer, in November of 2014. An accomplished artist, writer and filmmaker, Summer was celebrated throughout this year’s proceedings, including a touching memorial during the fest’s opening night gala.

Stars: MacLeod Andrews, Evan Dumouchel, Margaret Ying, Mick Casale, Elena Greenlee | Written and Directed by Perry Blackshear

Two once close friends meet up in New York after ten years. Christian is a hip marketer trying to increase his personal coolness. Wyatt has just left his job as a nunnery gardener. Wanting to reconnect, Christian asks Wyatt to stay over. But at 4 a.m. Wyatt receives a call telling him to prepare for war, leave the city and beware of infection. Should he protect his best friend from the impending apocalypse, or from himself? Audacious, unsettling, full of tension, emotion, creative boldness and heartfelt compassion, this brilliant feature debut is a master class in independent budget filmmaking.

After 23 unbelievable, uninterrupted days of screenings, today marks the Closing Night of the 19th edition of the Fantasia Film Festival. There is always a sadness lingering in the air on the last day. I often compare it to the feeling you get as a kid on the final day of summer camp. You get to spend an entire month with a group of friends from around the world knowing you might not have the opportunity to see some of these people again for an entire year. Known worldwide as North America’s longest-running genre film festival, Fantasia is special because of the people who not only make it happen but also for those of us who choose to spend the beautiful hot summer days crowded inside a gloomy theatre to watch movies we might not have the chance to see otherwise. And for the sixth consecutive year, the event succeeded...
