He might’ve been a hippie, but he didn’t pull punches. George Harrison dismissed Paul McCartney’s band Wings as a Beatles redux. Meanwhile, Paul said the group was underrated.
George Harrison said fans who wanted to hear The Beatles in the 1970s listen to Wings
During a 1974 interview with Rolling Stone, George said he didn’t just want to repeat what The Beatles did. “I certainly am going to control my own concept of me,” he explained. “Gandhi says ‘Create and preserve the image of your choice.’ The image of my choice is not Beatle George. If they want to do that they can go and see Wings, then. Why live in the past? Be here now and now, whether you like me or not, this is what I am.”
George then discussed his expectations of life and the expectations people had of him. “I don’t have control over anything,...

"Haven't you always wondered what slasher monsters--the masked home invasion family, the mindless unkillable monster, the serial killer trapped in a doll--what they do for those couple of years in-between their murder sprees? They're at Wilmhurst--a gated community in the middle of nowhere where they relax--or try to--until they get the call to go out and kill again."

Ever since the first issue was released in October 2019, Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster has been something I've been recommending to horror fans of all ages. A love letter to our favorite genre that feels fresh, subverts expectations, and has a compelling main character, I've been dying to see what's in store for Jerri Bartman and, thankfully, Count Crowley is back in Count Crowley: Amateur Midnight Monster! With the first of four new issues out now, I had the opportunity to talk with David Dastmalchian, who was excited to talk about the new series, discuss his creative process, and tease what's to come!
Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster is such an incredible graphic novel. We only got four issues and, along with myself, I know fans have been dying for more and we finally have Count Crowley: Amateur Midnight Monster Hunter #1! For our readers who may not have caught the...

Languishing for over two decades in pre-production hell, “Halo”, the live-action series based on the Bungie video game franchise, drops on Paramount + on March 24th. Created by Steven Kane and Kyle Killen and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, the show is based on a massive franchise with legions of fans that includes multiple novels, several comic book series, an anime, and two live-action web series. In other words, “Halo” has no shortage of stories to pull from.
Creating a new origin story for Spartan-ii soldier John-117/Master Chief played by Pablo Schreiber (“American Gods”) is only the beginning of what’s being built in the Paramount+ adaptation. It isn’t easy to judge a series of this scale from just the first two episodes released to the press. But based on the initial installments, “Halo” feels like a solid introduction to a new science-fiction franchise — as long as you’re...

David Dastmalchian is the face of interesting characters. Although it has been nearly 14 years since he debuted as one of Joker’s gang members in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, the performance remains chilling. Since then, he has continued making a mark as a Wombat in Ant-Man, a Mentat in Dune, and a Polka-Dot Man in The Suicide Squad, amongst other roles. Dastmalchian is likewise the face behind an interesting character: Late-night horror hostess and supernatural warrior Jerri Bartman, who returns for another adventure in the new Dark Horse comic, Count Crowley: Amateur Monster Hunter.
Created by Dastmalchian, with art by Lukas Ketner, coloring by Lauren Affe, and lettering by Frank Cvetkovic, the new volume, available March 23, picks up immediately following 2019’s Reluctant Monster Hunter. Set in 1983 Missouri, the story follows Jerri, an alcoholic TV reporter forced to return to her small hometown to work for her family-run local station.

Always found it quite ironic that when Image Comics was founded, its aim was to out-Marvel Marvel. Sure, there was the important issue of creators rights and giving people more creative freedom, but the main idea was to earn the money Marvel was earning and put more of it into the pockets of the writers and artists. it was always for me more a business decision than anything else. Then, somewhere along the way, Image became the place to go if you had a unique idea, a specific vision. Prior to that, Dark Horse Comics had been the go to place, but as they went all-in on licensing publishing, Image became the place to take new ideas. They still are. Image are easily the best publisher in terms of the range of genres and of creators, and...

Based on the Dark Horse comic book series Virus written by Chuck Pfarrer, the 1999 movie version passed a lot of scifi/horror fans by when it was initially released and has been relegated to obscurity ever since.
However, with a great pedigree of talent both behind and in front of the camera, and some pretty sick and gory practical VFX work, I think it demands a revisit.
I recently picked up a limited Blu-ray edition of the film from Germany (Cinema-Strange Extreme release). I had never seen the film and had very low expectations since nobody talks about the film really. But, man, I was surprised at what a blast it was.

Katy Perry won’t have to pony up any money in her “Dark Horse” copyright battle after a federal appeals court ruled that the $2.8 million jury verdict previously awarded to Christian rapper Flame was “unsupported.”

“Resident Alien” Season 1 ratings were into the stratosphere, for Syfy at least. The first Season 2 episode of the Alan Tudyk alien-comedy beamed down to Earth’s TV screens on Wednesday, but we won’t get Nielsen numbers for a few days. But last year’s Season 1 was out of this world, with an average of 2.917 million total viewers, a Nielsen number that includes seven days of delayed viewing per episode. That made “Resident Alien” Syfy’s most-watched new drama in nearly eight years — or since the first season of “Defiance” averaged 3.224 million viewers way back in 2013. Have a look back at the Top 10 Syfy originals seasons since the “Defiance” days via the below chart. No show since 2014, aside from “Resident Alien,” even made the list. Half of the list is comprised by “Defiance” and the “Face/Off” film-to-tv adaptation. Over these past eight years, no other series has had multiple...

It is a safe assumption that anyone with even a casual awareness of popular culture knows an Alan Tudyk performance.
For science fiction fans, Tudyk may be Wash from Firefly, or K-2So from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. For fans of comic-book-based shows, he’s Joker and Clayface on Harley Quinn, or Mr. Nobody on Doom Patrol. Disney fans have their pick of comedic villains, and animal sidekicks. From comedies to drama to dramedy, Tudyk has one of the most recognizable and interesting careers in showbusiness.
But it is in his current role, on Syfy’s sci-fi comedy series Resident Alien, that Tudyk is receiving newfound recognition. This standalone steampunk space adventure is full of mystery, monsters, and awesome gadgets, and marks the first-ever comic book appearance for Radio Spaceman, based on Mignola’s viral pencil sketches. This all-new series is written by Mignola, with art by Hinkle, colors by award-winning Mignolaverse collaborator Dave Stewart, and lettering by longtime collaborator Clem Robins.

Since launching in 2015, Keshet Studios, the U.S. division of Keshet International (Ki), has proved a model worth copying for international content producers looking to make it big in Hollywood. The company now develops and produces content for all the biggest broadcasters and streamers in several languages for both U.S. and international audiences. Led by president Peter Traugott, the outfit leans on Ki’s existing international catalog while also acquiring third party IP and developing new originals. Below, 10 Keshet Studio titles currently in development or production.

Keshet International (Ki) launched its U.S.-based production arm Keshet Studios (Ks) in 2015 with the idea of building a small, independent-style studio that could develop and produce original content for the U.S. and global marketplaces by supporting diverse voices, stories and talent. Since then, the label has generated content for the biggest streamers and networks in the U.S. and abroad and has entered into a lucrative first-look partnership with Universal Television which was renewed in February of this year.
One of the founding fathers – despite only being in his mid-20s at the time – of that original Ks venture was Asher Landay. Landay, director of scripted programming for Ks, has since been involved in developing and producing the company’s scripted slate including standout projects such as Apple TV Plus’ “Echo 3,” HBO’s “Our Boys,” David E. Netflix debuted a trailer for Season 4 of “Cobra Kai,” which premieres on Dec. 31.
The series takes place more than 30 years after the events of the 1984 film “The Karate Kid,” which culminated in Daniel Larusso’s (Ralph Macchio) triumph against Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) at the All Valley Karate Tournament. Their rivalry lasts throughout the decades, but in Season 4, Daniel’s Miyagi-Do and Johnny’s Eagle Fang dojos join forces to take down the Cobra Kai dojo led by their enemy John Kreese (Martin Kove) at the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament.
“If Johnny and I can actually work together and we win, Cobra Kai will be out of business,” Daniel says to his wife Amanda (Courtney Henggeler) in the trailer, which you can watch below.
“You gotta take things to the next level,” Johnny says to his students. “Eagles do not respond. They swoop down and take whatever they want.

Ok, you know how in big superhero comics, everything needs to be back at status quo ante eventually? Worlds will live, worlds will die, Ultrafellow will be replaced by a disabled teen Latina, and the entire Evil-Fighting Gang will disband for good…but only until it all goes back to the way it was before.
Readers tend to assume that your modern passel of writers – the ones we respect, the ones who talk about loving punching-comics since they were five, the ones we sometimes think still wear Underoos to big shows – only do this because they are forced to do so by the evil rapacious companies, and that, given their druthers, they would Change Things Permanently, which Would Be Awesome.
So, under this assumption, all of those careful putting-things-back-in-the-box storylines, all of the big Events that undo the previous Event to reset for the next Event – those aren’t the fault of their writers,...

Hellbound has an interesting story history, as the world of the supernatural horror series appeared in two previous incarnations prior to its birth as a six-part Netflix series: an animated short film released in two parts and a Naver webtoon. The former does not follow the same story as the Netflix series, but the webtoon does, with some frames from the online comic recreated almost exactly as is in the drama. It’s cool to see creator Yeon Sang-ho revisit this story-world at different points in his career. Let’s talk about the inspiration for and earlier incarnations of Hellbound…
Where to Watch the Hellbound Animated Short Film
Sang-ho first visited the world of Hellbound in his early-naughts animated short film 지옥: 두개의 삶, or The Hell (Two Kinds of Life). (Part I was made in 2003 and Part II was made in 2006.) The 11-minute rotoscope short follows two different people who are visited by angels,...

ABC is making some decisions about its remaining pilots, and it's bad news for three promising ideas.
Kevin Costner-executive produced National Parks Investigation, Triage, and Dark Horse are no longer moving ahead at the network.
The good news is that National Parks Investigation and Dark Horse are both being shopped to other outlets, but the jury is out on whether Triage will be shopped.
National Parks follows the elite special agents of the Investigative Services Branch who are tasked with solving the most complex and heinous crimes committed within the diverse and majestic National Parks of the Isb’s Pacific West region.
The cast included Billy Cambell, Angel Parker, Gerardo Celasco, Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut, Blu Hunt, Tiffany Dupont, and Guillermo Diaz.
Something tells us this one would serve as a good companion to Yellowstone over on Paramount.

ABC has made decisions on three of its five outstanding drama pilots, passing on Triage, Dark Horse and the Kevin Costner-executive produced National Parks Investigation. Meanwhile, Epic and Promised Land, whose final cuts are still being locked in, remain in consideration for midseason. They come from ABC Signature, has options on the casts until September I hear.
Dark Horse, which was not produced, and National Parks Investigation will be shopped by their lead studios, Universal Television and A+E Studios, respectively. Triage, from 20th Century TV, also may be shopped.
Second-cycle medical drama pilot Triage had a rollercoaster ride. The project, told in three different time frames, did not fare well with the first cut, did significantly better with the second cut, which had promising testing results, then cooled off during screenings but had enough of a momentum to be kept in contention back in May.

“National Parks Investigation,” “Triage,” and “Dark Horse” have all been passed over by the network after being in consideration for midseason pickups. Fellow dramas “Epic” and “Promised Land” remain in contention.
“National Parks Investigation” boasted Kevin Costner as co-writer and executive producer. The series revolved around the small group of elite Nps agents as they solve these crimes while protecting America’s national parks.
The cast included Billy Campbell, Angel Parker, Guillermo Diaz, Tiffany Dupont, Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut, Blu Hunt, Gerardo Celasco. Along with Costner, the show was written and executive produced by Aaron Helbing and Jon Baird. Barry Jossen, Tana Jamieson, Rod Lake, Ivan Cohen, and Ken Halsband also executive produced, with Anthony Hemingway directing and executive producing the pilot. With options expiring June 30, ABC has trimmed down its remaining pilot crop.
Of ABC’s five remaining drama pilots, the network has extended options on Disney fairy tale entry Epic and Latinx family drama Promised Land. That means that pilots Triage, National Parks Investigation and Dark Horse are no longer moving forward. Dark Horse, based on an Australian format, will be shopped by producers Universal Television. Elsewhere in pilot decisions, NBC has passed on its Jim Jefferies comedy.

So this is much more of a conventional superhero thing than I thought it was. Oh, it’s pretty good – Lemire is a strong writer, as always, and Ormston does that pseudo-horror look that is nearly a Dark Horse house style (or maybe just rules the Mignolaverse). But I was expecting something quirkier. (Note that Black Hammer is four years old. I had plenty of time to get more details; I just didn’t bother.)
It’s not clear if this was really a team. No name for the group is given in this first collection. But a half-dozen of the superheroes who used to defend Spiral City have been stuck on a farm somewhere in the middle of nowhere for ten years, after a battle with Darkseid “the Anti-God”. They saved the world, and ended up here. The creators don’t tell us how or why in this story...

‘Jupiter’s Legacy’ Opened as the Top Original on Nielsen’s Streaming Rankings Before It Was Canceled
Before it was essentially canceled on Wednesday, Netflix’s “Jupiter’s Legacy” debuted as the top original streaming series on Nielsen’s Top 10 Streaming programs.
On the overall list for the week of May 3-May 9, which includes both original and acquired TV series and movies, the superhero epic from Mark Millar landed at No. 4 with 696 million minutes viewed. As with all Netflix originals, “Jupiter’s Legacy” dropped its entire eight-episode season on May 7.
The Netflix film “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” led the overall list with 853 million minutes viewed.
For comparison’s sake, Disney+’s “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” garnered 495 million minutes for its premiere episode back in March.
Just yesterday, Netflix effectively canceled “Jupiter’s Legacy” after one season, though the streaming service is not done with the superheroic world created by Millar. A “Supercrooks” live-action series, which centers on the villains of that same fictional universe, has a series order.

Yes, it’s schmaltzy, very schmaltzy, but with strong performances by Toni Collette and Damian Lewis the odds are that you’ll love it
Six years ago I found myself gripped by the overwhelmingly likable documentary Dark Horse, which told the amazing true story of Janet Vokes, a former whippet breeder and pigeon fancier from the depressed Welsh village of Cefn Fforest who organised a community syndicate to buy a racehorse. The drinkers at Jan’s local chipped in a weekly £10 sub and their horse, symbolically called Dream Alliance, wound up winning the Welsh Grand National, basically making it the Seabiscuit of the valleys.
I predicted at the time that this would be remade as a fiction feature with Imelda Staunton as Jan and Jim Broadbent as her hangdog husband Brian. Well, actually it’s Toni Collette and Owen Teale, with Damian Lewis playing Howard Davies, the local tax accountant...

No year is a “bad year” for movies, but some years aren’t exactly too kind to certain subjects, genres, concepts and people. 2016, for all of its many negatives, has been a good year for film – and for its women, both behind the camera and squarely in front of it.
While female filmmakers are still struggling to be recognized in the same way as their male counterparts, the women who have broken through – from reliable auteurs like Andrea Arnold, Rebecca Miller, Kelly Reichardt and Anne Fontaine to rising stars like Maren Ade, Sophia Takal and Clea Duvall – did so in a very big way this year, thanks to films that spoke to their own talents and visions. Actresses also shown bright in 2016, from awards favorites like Natalie Portman, Annette Bening and Octavia Spencer to fresh faces like Kate Lyn Sheil, Ruth Negga and Sasha Lane.

Ken Loach is one of the world’s most renown naturalist filmmakers alive today. His films tend to focus on social issues facing ordinary individuals, including homelessness, income inequality, labor rights, and more. He has racked up serious critical acclaim and he’s one of nine filmmakers to win the Palme d’Or twice at the Cannes Film Festival for “That Shakes the Barley” in 2006 and “I, Daniel Blake” in 2016. This year, Loach will celebrate his 80th birthday, and there’s no better time to celebrate and honor his work than with a career-spanning documentary. “Versus: The Life and Films of Ken Loach” presents a candid, behind-the-scenes account of Loach’s body of work, tracking his career from the time he was an understudy in a Kenneth Williams revue to making groundbreaking TV dramas to directing major films such as “Kes” and “Riff-Raff.” Check out the trailer for the film above.

For the last half-a-century, Ken Loach has built up an iconic body of work, examining social issues through a realist approach in both drama and romance. From his landmark Kes to his double Palme d’Or win for The Wind That Shakes the Barley and this year’s I, Daniel Blake (our review), it’s the ideal time to get a definitive documentary of his career and one looks to have arrived with Versus: The Life and Films of Ken Loach.
In the works before his Palme d’Or win this year, it comes from director Louise Osmond, who helmed the heartwarming documentary Dark Horse, released last month in the United States. While his new documentary doesn’t have U.S. distribution yet, it’s already in theaters in the U.K. and so we have a new trailer and batch of clips. Featuring interviews with the director and his close collaborators (and adversaries), check out everything below.
Versus presents a surprisingly candid behind-the-scenes account of Ken Loach’s career as he prepares to release his latest feature film I, Daniel Blake, later this year. Director Louise Osmond was granted exclusive access on set and uses this as a starting point to look at Loach’s career, from his first job as understudy in a Kenneth Williams revue to ground-breaking TV dramas like Up The Junction and Cathy Come Home and later as an award- winning feature director of films like Kes, Riff-Raff, The Wind That Shakes the Barley, and The Angels’ Share. As well as inter-views with Loach, Osmond talks with a host of his friends, adversaries, actors and collaborators. This year will see Ken Loach celebrate his 80th birthday, release his 50th major work and commemorate Cathy Come Home’s 50th anniversary in November. Versus is more than just a document of Loach’s work but a playful study on the process and struggles of creating such a unique body of work. I, Daniel Blake won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Versus is more than just a document of Loach’s work but a playful study on the process and struggles of creating such a unique body of work. I, Daniel Blake won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Versus: The Life and Films of Ken Loach is now in theaters in the U.K. and is seeking U.S. distribution.

In a charming, truth-stranger-than fiction tale, the documentary Dark Horse details how a group of working-class people in a Welsh mining town came together to breed and raise a champion race horse.
This was truly a horse of a different color – actually the horse at the center of this delightfully unlikely tale is not even dark, but a beautiful golden color, with a white blaze and white socks. Louise Osmond directs this entertaining, inspirational film with a little comic touch, introducing us to a group of ordinary people who, as a sort of bar bet lark, do the impossible. As the film tells us, breeding race horses in a pursuit where costs were high and chances of success low, where many in the field are wealthy people who do it as a money-losing hobby. The idea that people who knew nothing about race horses and...

Like its namesake mutt, Dream Alliance, Dark Horse is an easy documentary to underestimate — an archetypal underdog story of a working-class town coming together despite economic hardship through a shared pursuit. It’s the classic snobs vs. slobs story as a group of dozens of regulars at a local watering hole in the impoverished Wales mining town of Cefn Fforest pooled their meager earnings, and bought a winning racehorse in the early 2000s.
But while the majority of Louise Osmond’s documentary feels as circuitous as a horse race from the starting pistol shot to the final stretch, it’s also told with an uncommon level of pathos and craft, emphasizing the symbolic personal victories above the historical viewpoint. Even delivered with breakneck exposition, Dark Horse would be immediately compelling, a story whose rags to riches arc aligns with some of the medium’s most immortal stories, but Osmond repeatedly...

The summer has arrived — at least if you’re going by Hollywood’s calendar. Our comprehensive preview for all four months will give you a hint as to what we most anticipate — but, for a more in-depth look, today we have our first monthly feature of the season. It should be noted that theatrical re-releases of the Jean-Luc Godard classic Band of Outsiders and Eiichi Yamamoto‘s animation, Belladonna of Sadness, both arriving on May 6th, as well as Fritz Lang‘s Destiny (on May 20th), are essential.
Getting to the new features, perhaps our most-anticipated studio release of the entire summer arrives, along with some of our festival favorites from the last year. To those lamenting the lack of superhero films: we figured it was best not to waste the space, as they are certainly already on your radar if you’re planning to buy a ticket. Check out...
