Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

Martin Scorsese fans are also sure to be excited once they see four of the director’s films (“Taxi Driver” “Mean Streets” “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” and “Who’s That Knocking at My Door?”) ready to stream on the first day of the month.
Additionally, Fourth of July celebrants can look back on history with Netflix’s own revisionist features such as “Inglourious Basterds” before enjoying some family fun with more kid friendly options like “Megamind” and “Princess and the Frog.”

Hot projects include Runar Runarsson’s Echo, Grimur Hakonarson’s The County and Hlynur Palmason’s A White, White Day.
The three Icelandic films presented at Goteborg’s Works In Progress were some of the most buzzed about by festival programmers and buyers.
Runar Runarsson’s Echo is a stylistic departure for the Volcano and Sparrows director. He paints a portrait of contemporary society by presenting 59 difference scenes, in a mix of fiction and documentary. Jour2Fete handles sales.

The 20th Nordic Film Market in Göteborg, unspooling Jan. 31-Feb 3, will showcase 16 works in progress including Hlynur Pálmason’s “A White, White Day”, Grímur Hákonarson’s “The County”, Mikael Håfström’s “The Perfect Patient” and Jesper Ganslandt’s “438 Days.”
Iceland is well represented this year with top directors and festival darlings Pálmason (“Winter Brothers”), Hákonarson (“Rams”) as well as “Volcano”’s Rúnar Rúnarsson, who will pitch their latest projects at Göteborg’s Biopalatset where last year Benedikt Erlingsson first introduced “Woman at War.”
“I simply had to select the three films by Pálmason, Hákonarson and Rúnarsson as they are on the top list of many festival programmers and buyers and their films are very different from one other, displaying the wide breath of talents from Iceland,” said Nordic Film Market’s head of industry Cia Edström.

LevelK has acquired the comedy-drama “H is for Happiness,” which marks the feature debut of Australian theater director John Sheedy.
Based on Australian author Barry Jonsberg’s popular young adult novel “My Life as an Alphabet,” the film follows Candice Phee, an optimistic 12-year-old girl from a small coastal town who is determined to bring her family back from the brink while facing the trials of adolescence. The novel was adapted by Australian screenwriter Lisa Hoppe, whose credits include the award-winning short “Heck.”
“I have always admired films such as ‘Little Miss Sunshine,’ ‘Pretty in Pink,’ ‘Muriel’s Wedding’ and most Wes Anderson films and it is the influence of these filmmakers and styles that will help [me] create a film that will be truly unique and full of quirks, pathos and humor,” said Sheedy.
Sheedy has a strong track record of directing theatrical works aimed at families and young people.

LevelK has acquired international sales rights to Swedish dance drama “Feel the Beat,” which marks the feature debut of actor-turned-director Rikard Svensson (“The Reunion”).
A romantic journey through Stockholm’s swing dance world in the 1930s, “Feel the Beat” revolves around Adam, who decides to learn how to dance in order to feel closer to his wife, who is in a coma following a car accident. Adam joins the Lindy Hop dance community, but finds out that his wife has been unfaithful all along.
“As in a contemporary saga, dream sequences full of dancing are created with a particular lust, that leads the minds to movies from the 1930s and 1940s, the time when Lindy Hop and other swing forms were created,” said Svensson, who also stars in “Feel the Beat” and produced it with Annette Stavenow Eriksson for Golden Road Pictures.
Anna Sise, Hilderun Gorpe, and Magnus Krepper complete the cast.

Well-reviewed erotic period thriller “Lady Macbeth” (Roadside Attractions) led the new specialized limited lineup. But a below-$15,000 start at five major New York/Los Angeles theaters came in well below other stronger recent debuts.
With studio sequel “War for the Planet of the Apes” nabbing better-than-usual critical response (watch out for “Dunkirk” this week) and many popular films expanding, it’s getting tougher for even acclaimed new films to stand out.
Two top Sundance premieres — U.S. Narrative Competition title “To the Bone” and U.S. Documentary Audience Award winner “Chasing Coral” — both premiered on Netflix along with limited theatrical play. As usual for the company, the grosses went unreported.

“A Ghost Story” (A24) joined the recent surge of strong limited openers. Boasting top reviews, David Lowery’s offbeat Sundance hit nabbed a wider than usual arthouse audience. A24 is terrific with the right project at casting a wider specialized market net, so this should join several recent titles led by “The Big Sick” (Amazon Studios/Lionsgate) and “The Beguiled” (Focus Features) that have found wider interest as they expand.
This weekend, as breakout “The Big Sick” reaches a wider audience, it’s on its way to becoming the biggest specialized release of 2017 so far — and Amazon’s biggest grosser to date. It looks perfectly positioned for its nationwide break this Friday.

Things are looking up at the specialty box office as two festival hits, Sundance breakout “The Big Sick” (Amazon/Lionsgate) and Sofia Coppola’s Cannes director-winner “The Beguiled” (Focus Features) both beat all the 2017 limited openings to date. With $87,000 and $60,000 per theater averages respectively, they both accomplished something only one platform film (“Cafe Society”) achieved all last summer. And they did so the same weekend in some of the same theaters.
This shows that core specialty audiences are starving for cinematic nourishment they aren’t getting from mainstream studio fare.
The two new films join “Beatriz at Dinner” (Roadside Attractions), which expanded well in its third week. A box office rebound for specialized non-mass-audience film is finally under way.

After two weeks of slim pickings during the Cannes Film Festival, the floodgates opened on the art house release slate as several new titles arrived in theaters. Among them, two single-digit-screen releases, A24’s “The Exception” and IFC’s “Band Aid,” had the highest per-screen-averages this weekend. “The Exception,” which is directed by David Leveaux, stars Jai Courtney as a WWII German soldier tasked with investigating the exiled Kaiser Wilhelm II (Christopher Plummer). It’s a certainty that within any given calendar year, there will exist a small handful of films set during World War II whose plots involve resisting Nazis. Art house audiences seem especially fond of the sub-genre. Novelty tends to steer these stories. They’re filled with zookeeper’s wives, brave children who steal valuable books, and other souls whose courage stands as a beacon of hope amidst savagery. “The Exception,” the latest of these, from Tony Award-nominated theater director David Leveaux (making his feature film debut), and written by Simon Burke (“Strike Back”), based off Alan Judd’s novel “The Kaiser’s Last Kiss,...

By all accounts Kaiser Wilhelm II was hardly a great leader. He put Germany onto its fateful course towards World War I and shortly after defeat was forced to abdicate the throne into exile at the secluded Netherlands mansion Huis Doorn. Alan Judd would eventually write an historical fiction novel entitled The Kaiser’s Last Kiss about the former crown holder and an incident involving the Nazis, Gestapo, and Hitler’s right-hand Heinrich Himmler—with the potential for redemption. Christopher Plummer would read said book, let his manager know of his interest, and wait ten years before another’s option lapsed so it could fall into their hands. Simon Burke would crack the screenplay, theater director David Leveaux would be hired to helm his debut, and The Exception would be born.
Plummer takes on the role of Wilhelm, now an aged master of the mansion living on the allowance of the Reich’s pity.

Forbidden love during World War II is a well-worn yarn in Hollywood, but The Exception factors in a new obstacle: The last king of the German Empire, banished to live in exile post-wwi.
The historical drama centers on a Jewish handmaid (Cinderella and Downton Abbey actress Lily James) and an SS officer (Suicide Squad star Jai Courtney) who fall for each other while working in the home of Kaiser Wilhelm II (Oscar winner Christopher Plummer). In this clip, debuting on Et, the lovers must confront their secrets and the Gestapo after disaster strikes, culminating in a deadly standoff.

We still don’t know what’s in store for us when “Twin Peaks” makes its long-awaited return next month, but we do finally have some new footage — kind of. Showtime has released a new teaser for the series, and though the 30-second ad consists of nothing more than a few establishing shots, it does serve to remind that this truly is happening and is just a few weeks away.

We don’t actually see anybody — most of the main cast is returning, with a few notable exceptions; there are also a number of new additions — suggesting that they must all be in another place.

Here's Jason Adams reporting from the Tribeca Film Festival yet again!
Let me just be clear about his right up front: I like thinking about Black Book. Paul Verhoeven's sexy 2008 Holocaust thriller with Carice Van Houten is one of my favorite movies and I've seen it at least a dozen times by now. And so it turns out that enthusiasm is open to re-interpretations, because a full half of The Exception plays like an off-Broadway re-staging of that earlier movie, and I still liked it plenty. No, director David Leveaux doesn't have nearly the handle on making moral hay of human contradictions so deftly as Verhoeven does, but who does? Leveaux makes a go of it, at least...
