The Journey to Paris
claudio_carvalho11 October 2017
In Kattegat, Ragnar announces the scheduled date to attack Paris and gives the arm rings to his sons Ubbe and Hvitserk that will travel with him. Meanwhile in Wessex King Ecbert sends Alfred with Judith's teacher on a pilgrimage to Rome and asks his son Aethelwulf to go with them while he commands the attack to Mercia. Ragnar, Lagherta and Harold sail to Paris with their warriors and face a storm during the voyage splitting their fleet. They set up a camp and when they join the ships, they row up the river to Paris. Rollo and Count Odo organize the defense of the town with the French army.

"What Might Have Been" is a good episode of "Vikings" with the preparation of Ragnar to attack Paris. The Machievellian King Ecbert gets rid of his son, sending him to Rome to protect Athelstan while he stays with his mistress Judith. The episode is developed is slow pace and the storm sequence is great. My vote is eight.

Back to Paris

The bunch is back on the water, Paris in their sights. King Ecbert decides to send his son on a pilgrimage to Rome with Alfred, Athelstan's son.

Not much seems to happen, but this is another good episode for the series, as we keep seeing things developing. Maybe, as the series has become 20 episodes per season instead of 10, story lines are being stretched, but in a moody and full of surrealism show like "Vikings" this is not as bad as it could be, as it gives time to further characterization and relationships. And we have been introduced to new and violent characters, whose personalities are well introduced, from dialogue to actions.

In general, "What Might Have Been" keeps its good quality in all the areas, from pace to acting, not letting the viewer down. We could ask for a faster development, but "Vikings" is going for a slow burner and doing a good job at it.

And Paris is waiting. With Rollo. And his hair.

Song of the fleet

Warning: Spoilers
There are two journeys started here, one for riches and one for political gain. The Vikings have gone to Paris once more, while King Eckbert sends his son to Rome on a pretense of pilgrimage to better position himself. The new crew of Vikings is pretty varied, rambunctious bunch but certainly not without their own lingering ambition and angst.

Its finer scene is the gathering of ships before they set sail, it always gives certain romantically grimy feel of the era. This is a more colorful collection of warriors, more divided but somehow stronger. Ragnar has developed addictive attachment to his oriental companion and her leaf. It's not a permanent fix as he still shows occasional suffering, on both physical and mental front.

Bjorn has become a force equal to his mother and father. He realizes the ploy against him, but this may pose a complication as the man responsible is under his mother's banner. Lagertha, on the other hand, is unpredictable. She's cold and stern, but she shows more repulsion to Ragnar for their past, a reaction not seen for a while from her, but her former groom could attest to her ability to hold grudge.

There's a caring motherly side of her beneath the scheming earl and shield maiden leader, but this ship may have sailed a long time ago. The same can be said about Rollo, although he doesn't play much role here. Paris' side is still very much the same, torn between its royalties, although the pillow talk is creepily appealing. It doesn't show a rival as strong as the wilder army of Vikings, a message the show clearly conveys with the brutal massacring.

Admittedly, the landing scene could show more action, but the tone of this episode is to announce their arrival, and the standoff does an appropriate closure to such effect.

Hallucinations and Betrayals

In the Vikings episode "What Might Have Been," I really enjoyed the captivating hallucination scene featuring Ragnar's past and the introspective touch it added to the storyline. The final scene, where the shocking betrayal by Rollo is unveiled, left me on the edge of my seat, skillfully building suspense for the next episodes. However, I found the scenes involving Count Odo a bit lacking in excitement, and Harbard's presence seemed somewhat less engaging as well. Nonetheless, the episode effectively balanced intense moments with some that were a tad less captivating. The scenes in England were good as well but could be better imo.

The story has dissolved into a morass out of ideas

I feel a little disappointed. Since the last 3 chapters, Vikings has become a mere succession of appealing images from visual perspective, but empty of soul and cohesion between the characters and the thread of the story. Vikings empathy stopped simply because writers (or director, i really don't know) stopped wanting to establish a connection with the viewer. They stopped talking with us, they to show themselves. They are only driving the vehicle but forgot that we should eat more than few panoramas to stay with them. I have no hope this will lead us to a place with minimum depth or content that nurture my need of something valuable.
