Despite his hectic work schedule of traveling more than 250 days a year, Anthony Bourdain has found a partner who understands him.
The Parts Unknown host, who will premiere the 10th season of the hit CNN show on October 1, told People about how his girlfriend, Italian actress Asia Argento, has inspired his work, affected his travel itinerary (“I spend a lot of time in Italy,” he laughs), and is able to relate to his on-the-road lifestyle.
“ has spent a lifetime in film since she was 9 years old. She comes from generations of filmmakers on both sides of the family. She...

It was a healthy holiday weekend for Edgar Wright’s “Baby Driver,” which took in close to $40 million over the course of the week. The speedy heist movie is the rare original summer studio movie, and has mostly thrilled audiences and critics alike, echoing the enthusiasm for the lively movie that was first glimpsed at its SXSW Film Festival premiere in March.
The response is a notable triumph for Wright, bringing him back to the spotlight four years after his last feature, “The World’s End,” after which he struggled to enter the Marvel universe with “Ant Man” before leaving the project. Other filmmaker colleagues have spoken up to advocate for “Baby Driver,” including Guillermo Del Toro, who made the case for the movie in an enthusiastic series of tweets last week.
But the social media platform also showcased at least one famous name who had a negative response — globe-trotting chef Anthony Bourdain,...

Chicago – The culture of food has never been more pervasive, from entire broadcast channels devoted to it, to new trends in eating being invented seemingly every day. Where did it all start? The new film ‘Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent’ documents the chef that opened the door.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Produced by foodie guru Anthony Bourdain, the documentary explores this little-known chef – with the “last magnificent” title implying he may have been sprung from the gods – and exposes his journey through the use of re-creations of his childhood and career. The film has a dreamy quality to it, with flights of poetry also served up with the history of the elusive chef. Like the newspaper mogul in “Citizen Kane,” the documentary asks us to put the puzzle pieces of Tower’s life together, with no one piece being the key to his motivations. It comes down to “what becomes an unknown legend most?...

Two specialized releases made the top 10 this week: “Gifted” (Fox Searchlight) came in #8 with $4.5 million, while the second weekend of “The Lost City of Z” (Bleecker Street) managed to place 10th in only 614 theaters.
Specialty distributors are pushing their films to more theaters; at nearly 2,000 theaters in its third week, “Gifted” is a wide release. This strategy doesn’t always work: A24 went to over 1,000 theaters initially for “Free Fire” with Brie Larson. It flopped across the board despite its pedigree.
Documentaries continue to stand out among niche limited openers. “Citizen Jane: Battle for the City” (IFC) scored a strong New York two-theater response despite its parallel VOD option. And food scored again as “Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent” (The Orchard) worked with targeted marketing in its first two cities.

Free Fire (A24) – Metactritic: 64; Festivals include: Toronto 2016
$1,040,000 in 1,070 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $972

Imagine a culinary world without open kitchens, locally-sourced menus, and Rachael Ray’s mug splayed across a collection of groceries and cookware at Target. If the eponymous subject of “Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent” didn’t exist — or, perhaps, went into sales instead of the restaurant business — these present-day familiarities might not be so familiar. As executive producer and fellow celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain puts it, back in the 1970s Tower created “the restaurant as scene.” The innovator himself describes his enamorment with food and first-class living as having been born out of a lonely childhood in which his well-heeled.

This weekend, Sundance Selects will open director Matt Tyrnauer's doc Citizen Jane: Battle For the City, with Marisa Tomei voicing the author/activist who fought entrenched power in New York for her vision of urban life. The Orchard, meanwhile, is opening a non-fiction feature, Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent from Lydia Tenaglia. The Tribeca '16 debut has a high-profile ally in the form of Anthony Bourdain who will appear at select weekend Q&As. The weekend is a…...

Andy Warhol may have predicted that someday everyone would be famous for 15 minutes, but he wasn’t prescient enough to know that every notable chef would be the subject of a documentary. The latest example is Lydia Tenaglia’s portrait of Jeremiah Tower, who pioneered the American Cuisine movement at such highly influential restaurants as Berkeley’s Chez Panisse and San Francisco’s Stars. Benefiting from its charismatic and emotionally complex central figure, Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent proves compelling enough to appeal beyond its target foodie demographic.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
Will This April Dump Weekend See Any New Movie Open Over $10 Million?
After the decent opening of last week’s The Fate of the Furious--though not quite as much as I predicted--it’s going to be hard for any new movie to make a mark against its second weekend even if it drops 55% or more this weekend, which is very likely.
Probably the best bet to make money this weekend is the thriller Unforgettable (Warner Bros.), which pits Kathryn Heigl against Rosario Dawson and is the directorial debut by producer Denise Di Novi (Crazy, Stupid, Love). It also stars Geoff Stults as the ex-husband of Heigl’s character Tessa, who becomes engaged to Dawson’s Julia, making her the stepmom to the former’s daughter,...

The 5th Annual Key West Film Festival has announced its official 2016 lineup, including the opening night film, “20th Century Women,” directed by Mike Mills and starring Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig and Billy Crudup. As part of the festival’s signature Critics Focus program, MTV’s Chief Film Critic Amy Nicholson will present and lead a conversation around the film, alongside David Fear, Senior Film/TV Editor of Rolling Stone.
Director of Programming Michael Tuckman said of Nicholson’s pick, “I could not be more thrilled with Amy Nicholson’s choice of ’20th Century Women’ to kick off our 5th Anniversary edition of festival. Annette Bening’s performance is Oscar-deserving and the rich depth of the balance of the leading cast is Altman-esque in its quality. Amy’s discussion after the film will bring a cunning critic’s eye to this fabulous film for audiences.”

Now more than ever, the odds of knowing some celebrity chef are high: Martha Stewart, Anthony Bourdain, Mario Batali, Emeril Lagasse, and more, just to name a few. With channels such as Food Network and shows like Ace of Cakes or Lidia’s Italy, of course it wouldn’t be the least bit shocking to hear people talking of some of their favorite chefs and what they made on last night’s episode.
But what about those famous chefs who don’t have shows, yet still are celebrities in themselves? Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent covers just that, the life of a well known and surely controversial chef named Jeremiah Tower, who went on to develop the whole style of “California Cuisine” as well as open his own set of restaurants called Stars in San Francisco.
